  1. The Stad

    Visiting Sorgheim

The journey had felt long to Makny, though it was only a few days slow ride from Førstlys. He and his father had been through several towns and villages along the way, though they had kept to themselves rather than announce their presence. As his father said, it was far easier for them to learn the minds of the people if the people did not know who they were. So they had traveled alone, unannounced, and humble, observing what they could from horseback and making note of what directions they ought give along their return trip. They overtook an older fellow leading a cart laden with bags of grain just before entering the village of Sorgheim. As they passed through the gate, Makny saw what appeared to be a large lantern set in the center of a circle of eight carved stone columns. The glass inside it was broken, and its columns were worn and crumbling, with moss slowly climbing their bases. Makny watched the townsfolk pass the lantern indifferently, but he could not ignore it. “Father, what is that?” he gestured as he asked. His father answered slowly, seeming to concentrate on weaving his horse through the traffic around them. “A remnant,” came the reply, “of a people long gone from these shores. All but forgotten, I think... though we might see for ourselves soon enough.” There was a concealing air and a strange distance to his voice, though Makny barely registered it, caught up as he now was in the activity that swirled around them. Everywhere the village folk were hard at work, hustling to and fro, shouting greetings back and forth, while above it all the Jarl's soldiers stoically paced the barricade. They followed the sandy, well-worn path up the hill, past the flour mill and the low-slung storehouse, and deeper into the village proper. Overhead, the early summer sun was bright in a clear blue sky. As it shone warmly on his shoulders, Makny began to feel the drowsy weight of several nights spent in the dew on ground, and he hoped against hope that tonight might find him in a soft bed with a roof above him.

    Grevling Manor

See the previous tales: Wyndor's Saga: Chapter 1 -What Has Past- Chapter 2 -What Has Past- Chapter 3 -What Has Past- It finally felt like summer in northern Mitgardia. Wyndor knew it wouldn't last long, but winter was long enough in the north. No sense thinking about its return until you had to. While Constance had been busy in Kaliphlin and then with Charlemagne he had been busy shoring up the defenses against the Algus. This included building a fortified manor for he and his wife, Valanice. He didn't want to worry about his wife while he was off defending others. The result was Grevling Manor. Built on the outskirts of Dalig Ulv, it provided a refuge whenever he had a break from civil duties. The main gate allowed access to and from the manor, but when the snows were deepest a back door was utilized to keep from having to shovel out the gate every day. While most official business was taken care of in town, sometimes Wyndor would welcome visitors at his home. If you're ever in the area be sure to stop on by and experience good Mitgardian hospitality!

    Arun's Adventures - Ch. 1

Prologue Chapter 1 I recently joined and this is my first build posted. It was initially created as a backdrop for my character, then I started getting ideas. Looking at some other builds I was inspired by some of the captioned stories put together by people like Pombe and De Gothia. I decided to take it a step further and start a comic-style storyline for my build. Is this an acceptable image format for challenges or contests? Do I need to just use raw images with text captions if I want to include story? P.S. comments and critique are most welcome.
  4. Many buildings in Sorgheim were dug into the hills that rose at the feet of the inland mountains, but the storehouse was dug down even further than most, protecting its contents from the bitter cold of the long northern winters. Much of the building was made of timber, as this was easy to harvest and work into building material, but the foundations and columns were stone. The stone on the ground kept rainwater from soaking into the wood and causing it to rot, and the columns held up the significant weight of the slate roof and snow that often laid on it for months at a time. Inside, food was kept as dry as possible, and inventories were frequent to make sure nothing spoilt before it could be used to feed the village. The fourth and final section of a long project, I'll have pictures of the whole thing up later (they need a little polish before they're presentable). C&C welcome as always.

    Fortress of St. Jocosa

The walls around the Church of St. Jocosa have protected it for hundreds of years against enemies. Located in the mountains of Avalonia, the church is currently being guarded by the soldiers of Eryos. This was built for the 48x48 castle category in the 2018 Summer Joust. It was really fun to try to fit an entire castle on a confined space. I got the idea of creating a fortified church from Tim Goddard's creation, Abbey of St. Rumaire.
  7. The Tales of Lady Gwenllian 0. Introduction 1. The arrival of Lady Gwenllian aboard the Cedar Serpent 2. Scouting a Site 3. Early Spring in Prenmôr Having received a charter from Queen Ylspeth to build and a license to crenellate, Lady Gwenllian and her small host made plans for a castle and built shelters for the winter. While temporary, these structures were designed to last several years while the main fortifications were built. The two-story, dirt-floored structures were framed out of timber (garnered by skillful negotiations of Myellan with the local elven tribes of the nearby forest), and the walls were sealed with wattle and daub. Because of the season of her arrival, it was too late in the year to establish quarries and there was no stone to be had. The thatched roofing was constructed from local plants and grasses, and a hole was left at the apex of the chimneyless structure to allow smoke from the central firepit to escape. In early spring, as the weather began to warm and the snows melted, the dead grasses began to give way to new growth. Alis was given the task of caring for the fowl, Chwyd took to sweeping up (having vowed to never voyage by ship again due to his seasickness), and Lady Gwenllian led by example, hefting supplies along with her people. The new Avalonian colors hung proudly over Lady Gwenllian's house. Over the winter, she and her lady at arms, Seren, had been planning the new fortifications. Quarries would need to be established, timber would have to be sourced, workers would have to be found, and all with the cooperation of the local elven and human communities in such a manner as to preserve the environment. Castwyr and Myellan had spent part of the winter getting to know the neighbors of this region. The winter had not been particularly harsh and Lady Gwenllian felt optimistic about the upcoming spring in her new home, deciding to name her small village Prenmôr, meaning 'refuge' in her native tongue. I welcome comments and criticisms, and I especially appreciate specifics--if you like/dislike something, please tell me why, and if you see areas for improvements, I would like to know what I'm missing. I'm trying to learn how to make my builds better, so any tips or advice is appreciated!

    Avalonian House

This was one of my small contributions to the Guilds of Historica display at Brickworld 2018. Kevin had extra space on his island, so I built this and one other house to fit in an Avalonian setting. We had some lights left over after making our realm for the Tree of Worlds, which allowed me to throw some inside this house to light the stained glass windows. Despite the plentiful timber in Avalonia, stone is a common material choice for the more expensive homes. If the building looks familiar, it utilizes many of the same designs as our previous Nordheim Armory. See more pictures on Brickbuilt. C&C welcome
  9. Altar of Cthonic Hades by Ross Fisher, on Flickr Your eminences, As we discussed prior to my departure, I have found that it would be beneficial to send a 'message of intent' to the people of New Terra. As such, I have commissioned the building of a new Altar of Cthonic Hades in the town of Fatu Hiva. I would have liked to build it in marble, but the cost of shipping it here would have been prohibitive. Instead I have been forced to use the local stone, which is passable. The icon is forged from an old spiked cannon, and displays a likeness of the Underlord based upon the icon I brought with me for personal prayer. I had expected to meet more resistance to this project, but the town has seen (and caused) so much death recently that few people voiced any displeasure, and none were willing to obstruct the project. A bowl for offerings has been placed in front of the statue, which should generate some initial funds for the project here. I consecrated the monument with a sacrifice of half a dozen pigs. In time, the gods may see other, larger sacrifices here, and understand our humility. Your humble servant, François Well this was fun. This is my first construction freebuild. It is a small arts and culture building. It's based on other historical altars. These originally started out as just a rocky platform where you could kill an animal. Once you've killed one there, you might as well kill them all in the same place. Keep the blood contained. Doing all the butchery there also makes sense. And then if you're giving a cut to the gods, you'd leave it there. Can't be taking food from the gods. If you were really grateful you'd burn the whole animal to a crisp and leave it there as a holocaust. Eventually, these places got built up and built up with the ashes and bones of dead animals. And then you start getting extra ornamentation, like on the Ara Pacis in Rome, and what started out as just a platform becomes a massive structure, with steps and columns and everything. As our boy François is a priest of Hades, and Fatu Hiva is the start of his journey, and it has seen a lot of death recently, this build seemed like a nice fit for my free small building. Hope you like. Ross
  10. Padre Jules François - BoBS SigFig by Ross Fisher, on Flickr Padre Jules François (centre) lands on the shores of the Isle d'Or, ready to root out heresy and burn savages in the name of the Order. Huzzah! The Padre's early life was that of many common clergymen; the younger son of a minor family, he was packed off to a monastery to learn his trade. However, unlike other young initiates into the Order of the Faith, François developed a knack for uncovering secrets that soon got him noticed by the Temple of Hades. Inducted into their ranks, it wasn't long before he was turning heads across the order. Many fear him, some believe they can use him. What remains to be seen is, is the Padre truly pusuing his tyrannical crusade against heretics because of a holy calling, or is there some more devious purpose driving him? Monsieur Gallo (left) is the Padre's able notary, keeping records of interrogations, files on the personal conduct of notable individuals upon the brick seas, and all the proper documentation that a heretic burning requires. He lost an eye in the service of his patron when a particularly resistant subject broke free from her restraints. However, the pension he received in compensation more than made up for the loss. Merde the Murderer (right) is the Padre's able bodyguard and muscleman. Formerly a penal legionnaire imprisoned for garotting his superior officer, Merde has "seen the light" of the Order of the Faith, and has been released into the Padre's custody.
  11. After one of our squads found the SG Switch and shout it down, the way to the Generator has come free. Finally we have reached the border of the base, where the force field has already been turned off. Shock Trooper - It looks like there is no friendly or enemy activity. We should find out what's going on. BN-0303 -Sir, maybe I can get some information from that console. BN-0303 -Sir, I found a bunch of classified infos, which we do not have access to. But there are some accessible ones: The the base was evacuated and all remaining units were ordered to leave the moon. Shock Trooper - In that case we need to found the way out here. BG-0329 - I think, That might help us: Switches clicking, generators starting, computers beeping. Pre-departure checks Please judge.
  12. One of the more unusal exports from Isla del Diablo is the particularly potent venoms of the island's arachnid population. Of course, obtaining said venoms firstly requires finding the spiders, which means venturing out of Haven and into the dangerous wooded portions of the island. Quite a risk, but the hunter's patrons pay well... ...especially, of course, the House of Spiders.

  14. My first model of 2018, this is based off of the watermill located in Riverwood from the game Skyrim. It is meant to be viewed from all sides, and has a completely irregular border. I took inspiration for the landscape colors from Wochenender and his incredible Jernsteein creation, while the water wheel was based off of Brick’s design. The trees are again taken from the tutorial by Chris. Finally getting around to posting this model here. This completes the small storyline I had started a while ago, as well as finally finishing Age of Mitgardia! Previous story installments: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. Dedan, Glorfindel, and a new man dressed in dark blue robes made their way to the watermill at Firoir. A few of the villagers were around, and were obviously curious about the three visitors. Some had heard of a confrontation between Glorfindel and their Lord Tuinis, and wondered what it meant for the Officer of Valholl to have returned. Firm steps could be heard upon the wooden walkway over the river as Lord Tuinis approached, flanked by three Mitgardian soldiers. And it was obvious from the guard's gleaming weapons and armor that they were not any of the local troops under Tuinis' command. As he neared the small group, it was clear to all that his rage was barely contained. "What is the meaning of this, Sir Glorfindel," blustered the man, placing sarcastic emphasis on the term sir. "Invading Firoir with armed troops is no small matter, and I will have you brought before the Valholl Council and banished from Mitgardia!" Glorfindel answered with just a hint of a smile, "That will not be possible, Tuinis." "Further insults! Let everyone here be witness to the fact that this man has not even had the decency to properly address a lord of Mitgardia." "Your status as lord has been revoked, and the Parliament has also removed your control of Firoir." This statement from Glorfindel was brought with a fleeting moment of terror on Tuinis' face, before his usual arrogance returned. "Lies!" He spat back, "You have merely brought some of your own lackey troops, and used armed force to take this town!" At this point the oldest of the three soldiers spoke up: "I am Captain Mattr, and can assure you that this was all done on behalf of the Valholl Council, I am not on any orders from Sir Glorfindel." "You will find all of the legal documents in order," said Dedan, as he extended a sealed letter towards the former lord. "Those papers also instate Vigr here as the new lord of Firoir," added Glorfindel, gesturing the man robed in blue. Tuinis had a nasty glint in his eye as he made his parting statement before the guards escorted him to the prisons of Valholl, "I can see your trickery was thorough, but be assured that you will not escape this debacle unharmed!" The villagers breathed slight sighs of relief at the man's departure, though they dared not hope their new lord was any better of a man. In time Vigr did gain their respect, and also that of the neighboring lord's who were only too happy to see their troublesome neighbor replaced. See more pictures on Brickbuilt C&C always welcome .

    [SR] FTA Redtail

The boys at the Saltyshipworks have been at it again this time building for the FTA. Gustaf ran tight on the deadline and came up short on paint ... So she was christened the FTA Redtail. Haymish McGillicuddy was keen on taking command of this vessel bringing along his eldest son Ezera as first mate ... Don't mind helmsman Wentz photo bombing Custom Duck was fitted to ensure she would keep up with the fleet The deck may seem crowded but her hold is plenty spacious for valuable cargo This will be licenced as a class 2
  16. Gustaf was growing tired of sleeping in a spare store room at the Salty Shipworks so he decided to erect a home. After all if he was to keep up with the idea that he was just a landlubber businessman then he needed to fit in. So plans were drawn and in his spare time he completed the structure. He even did some landscaping to make it look less like an old tavern. Ooc: Finally got around to building a residence ... No interior for now ... This will be licenced as a small residence in Charlatan Bay Thanks for looking c&c welcomed

    Old Statue

In the countryside of Avalonia lies an old statue. Nobody knows when it was built or who built it, or even who it commemorates. This is my 5th freebuild, which means I can finally enter the 5th anniverary challenge! It was a bit rushed, but I didn't want to make something just so I can say I have 5 freebuilds, so I still wanted to build to the best of my ability. The design is quite simple, but I like how it turned out!
  18. Every so often, Makny would go with his father to check on the stores that had been gathered over the growing season. The old warehouses had been dug into the hillsides along the fields to protect their contents. The earth kept the old burrows cool through the heat of the summer, but made sure they didn't freeze in the depths of the cold northern winters. C&C welcome as always!
  19. Makny's youth saw good times for Førstlys, and the village swelled in size. More people needed more food, and more food required that more fields be cultivated. Since Makny wasn't yet strong enough to handle the plow, he would follow his father and sow the seeds into the fresh furrows. Many days of his early summers were spent pacing the fields. When once he protested that it didn't seem like the work of a nobleman, his father reminded him that it was the duty of the lord to be sure his people ate, and what was the duty of the lord, was the duty of his son, and his son as well. I realized after this was dismantled that I didn't get the green and yellow in there, but I wanted to try the uneven base and banner seemed out of place in a field so...

    The Drunken Monkey

Introducing the smugglers vessel The Drunken Monkey. The crew at the Salty Shipworks had been working round the clock as the Capitan Larvey was hoping to slip into the escorted convoy that he knew was leaving in a few days. Gustaf had called in a few favors for his old friend and this was another. The paint on her still fresh the carved monkey figurehead drove home the Capitan Larveys' outlook on life ... More rum and the pursuit of treasure. She was fitted with minimal cannons as stealth and speed were her main defenses. Capitan Larvey had ordered her with a large hold and had forgone crew quarters and his cabin. Instead he had hammocks fitted just the other side of the small mess The crew were well seasoned one and all. (From L-R) Look out Joe, Handsom Jack, Sneeky Pete, Capitain Larvey, Left Eye, Hop along Bill, Master Gunner Edward aka Matchstick, and finally the quartermaster Jonas. This was Larveys inner circle who would get the ship underway. With such a simple rig she didn't need an large crew and he intended to pick up some bilge rats once in port Now for just the ship: Weather Deck- Looking Fore- Aft detail- Drunken Monkey figurehead- Side profile- I built this rather quick to meet the extended deadline ... Its my interpretation of what the renagade runner should have been. So I borrowed the sails from her and mixed in a top sail from the pearl. It has heavy influence from the set but has several little detail elements Ive been wanting to try. Im actually really impressed with how quick this build came together. You'll notice several little details that pay homage to lego ships of old. I plan to licence this as my class 2 free ship.
  21. Charlatan Bay, Infero Pordejon seemed like the perfect place to lay low and Captain Gustaf knew exactly how to hide in plain sight. After a meeting with the powers that be he took to work carving out some more off one of the old caves to build a workshop. The cave keeps the shop supplies secure and the stone removed was used to build the offices. Gustaf figured he'd pay homage to the old nickname Salty Devil and named it the Salty Shipworks. Gustaf hired an overseer to keep the books and the crew working smoothly that way he can have a more hands on approach with the ships. Most don't even know he owns the place ... Just think he's a hired hand. James Edwards overseer of Salty Shipworks The crew heads out to start the day including Gustaf who just met with Mr. Edwards to discuss the details on the current build.

    Journey to Eyros

The son of a Mitgardian shepard, Bartholomeus and his sheepdog were sent by his father in search of a better life. He is headed for Eryos Castle to learn from Prince Kevin the Navigator, who was a former chicken farmer. But first, he must travel through the dense forests of Avalonia. I really wanted to use the bamboo pieces that were on the pick a brick wall a while ago. I planned to use them on Eryos Castle, which I did on the rocks, but I had a ton left over! In fact, I still have a ton left over, but I was limited by the amount of lime green studs I had.

    Eryosmith Band

When not on duty, four soldiers from Eryos Castle come together to become Eryosmith! They perform in taverns and inns around Avalonia. (sorry for the white space in this photo) This was a fun small build, and coming up with the designs for the cello and organ was especially enjoyable. Two more creations and I can enter the 5th anniversary challenge!
  24. Though he likely would never rule Førstlys, Makny was a member of the lord's household, and would be expected to fight for him. So his father spent many hours with him, teaching him to swing a sword and hold a shield. They would often practice in dangerous corners of the island, so Makny learned to mind his footing and pay attention to his surroundings. His father never went easy on him, for as all Mitgardians know, the pain of defeat is a warrior's greatest teacher. http:// Comment and criticism welcome.
  25. Because he was the second son of the Lord of Forstlys, Makny's father was often responsible for helping expand and improve the lord's holdings. This meant everything from bolstering defenses to tilling new fields, and he always made sure the Makny was around to learn what he could. When he was very young, Makny's father would send him out before a new field was plowed. He would find the rocks and stack them along the side of the field, protecting the plow blades and fencing the field to keep the animals from trampling the crops that would be planted there. The walls he stacked as a child were crooked, with many small rocks; but as he grew, his fences became straighter, and the rocks he stacked unaided were much larger. This is my first build for GoH, and I'm looking for critiques. From here I'm thinking that I'll run through as many of the AoM categories as I can by starting with vignettes or small builds, as my Lego time is highly limited these days. But I'm hoping to get out enough freebuilds to crank out something for the fifth anniversary challenge. I've followed this story from the beginning (as a lurker in the shadows, while away from my collection in college), and now I'm really excited to participate!
