  1. Some time ago, Corlander escorts took prize a mid-sized war galley during a heated action with privateers. The galley was heavily damaged during the encounter, which, paired with its unconventional construction, meant considerable delay in outfitting and manning her for service with the Royal Navy. Armed with a single 32 pounder cannon mounted in the bow, she can pierce any warship of the Brick Seas. The nine oars per side ensures unequalled tactical mobility, especially when other ships are becalmed, and enables her to bring that single massive cannon to good use. The large crew at the oars doubles as marines in a boarding action, making her a very effective close-encounter machine-of-war. Her lateen rig ensures good performance under sail, allowing her to keep up with the slower convoys as escort. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Mainly an experiment with building a hull for a galley. A few hinge plates later, and I was pretty happy with the result. I am reasonably happy with the oars and upper hull too, but might one day give a larger galley a try, with a more elaborate superstructure and rig. It represents the 3A Carnage taken by Corlander escorts some time back. C&C is welcome.
  2. With King's Harbour growing, its rising number of inhabitants has started looking for spiritual guidance and refuge. Therefore, the Faith has opened up a temple in the settlement. While nominally a Temple of Poseidon, and served by his priests, it is practically a Pantheon, allowing worshippers of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon alike. Most likely, as the settlement grows, temples will be erected for each of the three deities, as well as for other religions of the Brick Seas, but for now, one must do for all believers. On this day, Ibn al'Sayeed is visiting the temple, to offer worship to his God. Being native to one of the southern realms of the old world, his religious views are known to very few, but he has been frequenting this temple since its opening. Whether he is worshipping one of the three known Deities, some foreign version of one of them, or something entirely different is known to few, as he does not discuss it openly. What everyone know, though, is that he is the manager of one of the most succesful estates in New Terra. Adding to that an entrusted position as Montoya's right hand man in the ETTC, and his assistance to the governorial seat of King's Harbour, his days are never dull. Al'Sayeed considers his career with some degree of pride. It has been hard work, starting out as the lowly captain of a small xebec, the Sphinx, but now risen to a considerable position in business, respected and known by many accross the Brick Seas. He does have plenty to thank his Gods for, whoever they are. Outside the temple, at all times, two priests of Poseidon are stationed, tending to the temple and aiding the poor passing by. In King's Harbour, however, their sacks of bread and other necessities are hardly ever touched, as very few are in need of their services. Instead, they walk the settlement after their shift at the temple, handing out bread to a hungry guardsman, a worker at a factory, or a kid underway from school. When the greater charities are in low demand, smaller acts of goodness must fulfil their days. _____________________________ King's Harbour needed a cultural property to progress, and Ibn al'Sayeed needed some screentime, as did the faith. And here it all is, in one build. C&C is, as always, welcome. Thanks for looking!
  3. After his brief stop in Stormhaven, Major Dirk Allcock and his expedition have continued to their destination in the East Prio Sea. Here they have began to explore the islands that have been claimed by Corrington, namely Celestia, Cascadia and Garma's Key. He has slowly, yet methodically, made his away along the coast line, and has made a series of preliminary charts. Soon he will have compiled a preliminary map of Queen Annetta's latest possessions, complete with recommendations for future settlements. His main focus has been on Celestia. A much larger island than any claimed by Corrington so far, it is covered with verdant and thick jungle, much thicker and wetter than the colonies in the Sea of Thieves area. Large mountain ranges are visible in the interior. For now he has identified the site he believes is the most suitable for Corrington's first settlement in the Prio Seas. On the Western side of the Island, a large spit of land forms a huge natural harbour that he has dubbed Vanilla Lagoon after the abundance of the valuable epiphyte growing amongst the trees of the jungle on the leeward side of the bay. On the Southern side of the bay, opposite the promitory formed by the southernmost point of the spit, the jungle thins on a flat plain. It is here Dirk plans on establishing Jameston, named for Queen Annetta's Grandfather, King James IV of Corrington. Here he can be seen making landing on one of the beaches to the east of the settlement site. --- I've been planning this one since October but it just never seemed to come together. Several large BrickLink orders of 1x2 trans-blue tiles later and the motivation of the need for the scene for both the RPGs that I participate in, and here it is (finally). Jameston will be established shortly, and Major Allcock will be planning a mini-challenge to explore into the interior hopefully soon. The boat design is from Lego Monster's US Navy whaler on flickr, although the seating is quite fragile, the hull holds together well!
  4. Each morning, Don Isaac Montoya wanders to the shore of Isla de Medio to look out for ships carrying the Corlander standard, before returning to the field hospital to care for the wounded of the Eslandola-Mardier conflict. He is longing to leave the conflict behind, and with the hospital now up and running, he is ready to move on towards new horizons. Having received word from his friend and fellow of the Royal Society, Dirk Allcock, of a planned expedition to explore Cascadia and Celestia in the Prio Seas rumoured to be a treasure trove of scientific discovery, Montoya is looking to leave the tragedy and tedium behind and again engulf in the pursuit of science.
  5. Some time ago, a small boatload of people from the far west of Halos landed in Mooreton Bay wishing to start a new life. The mayor at the time, Major Dirk Allcock, being a typical Corlander and open to people of all cultures, of course accepted them into the colony. They petitioned the mayor for some land in which to grow the staple cereal of their distant homeland, rice. Major Allcock was quite surprised when they requested land in the highlands inland of the colony. Although terraced systems were not unheard off, indeed Stormhaven had a sugar plantation utilising a similar system, it was still quite unorthodox. Nevertheless, Major Allcock approved, and even provided convict labour to clear the land and build the barriers for the terraces. Although he has since left the settlement, work has continued under the new Mayor, and the fields are now being planted for the first time. In this scene, the top tier has been flooded and planted. The middle has been flooded and is in the process of being planted; and the bottom is being ploughed by an oxen driven plough. Hi all! A small plantation for Mooreton Bay. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years!
  6. Cooke being away in Quinnsville didn't stop developments in King's Harbour. Everything was progressing along with his, so far still secret, plan, and new settlers arrived regularly. While not growing as fast as Cooke had hoped, the arrival of organisations like the ETTC and the Royal Society spurred growth and attracted both investments and people. One of the most recent additions to the settlement was a physician, and it was with the growth of services like this that Cooke hoped the naval base would pick up growth. And so it was! Cooke's latest order as Governor had been to start building up a network of stone docks and canals, and already days after finishing these, the first plots had been sold. In the first stretch of stone docks erected, warehouses and residences had already been constructed for some of the most entrepreneurial residents and businesses, and the docks were coming alive. The first buildings were a warehouse of the Montoya Estate and residences for two wealthy merchants. Loading and unloading the vessels and barges calling in the port required the proper tools, and several cranes and lifts had already been constructed, both for the dockside and as integral to the warehouses. To ensure traffic running smoothly in and across the canals, several drawbridges were being constructed all around the new port. The canals were already coming alive with several barges and small-craft like this ox-driven vessel currently unloading barrelled cocoa beans from the Allcock cocoa plantation inland. These were being stored in the cellar under the merchant's residence. Nearby, a captain is negotiating with a merchant for a new suit of sails for his lugger, which is currently without any cloth on its masts, due to it being improperly stored while in port and thus ruined by a storm. In the meantime, one of the new residents has purchased a piano from the Montoya Warehouse, surprising his wife with such a, for the colonies, rare implement. Cooke's city plan allows ample space for traffic and trade, with roads all around most buildings. This has the added benefit of limiting the squalor of closely populated areas, something that had been a cornerstone in Cooke's plan, having himself far too often struggled his way through dirt and despair in the cities of the old world. It will be interesting to see how King's Harbour develops from here, but if Cooke's plans are followed closely, this section will be a good representation of its future. _______________________________________________- Thanks for looking, all. I have wanted to do something like this for a long time, as I have a plan for King's Harbour, which I will hopefully find an occasion to show off in the near(ish) future. I am taking most of my inspiration from northern european cities such as copenhagen and amsterdam, especially Nyhavn in CPH. As always, C&C is welcome. A few more pictures can be found in my flickr. It will be licensed as a large commerce.
  7. After leaving Mooreton Bay on his voyage of discovery to the west, Major Dirk Allcock makes a brief stop in the Corlander settlement of Stormhaven. His visit is to pay his respects to the mayor, Jack Bain, satisfy his curiosity regarding the island (Serentia was his intended destination before he was asked to supervise the settlement of Alicentia) and visit one of his business investments, a medium artesian which was producing quality head wear for the discerning gentlemen. As you may well recall, Stormhaven is unique in that it is situated in a mangrove tidal flat and buildings are built on stilts and connected by boardwalks. A few months ago, Dirk was approached by a women named Martha Harris. Mrs Harris was a widow who wanted to settle in Stormhaven to be close to her son, who served their as a minor civil servant in the administration. She wished to buy a plot of land and set up a hattery to fund her self. Thus Dirk provided the capital, and now he is here to see his investment first hand. The widow Harris already has gained a formidable reputation, producing quality hats and even winning the contract to supply Corlander troops in the region with replacement tricornes. To keep up with the demand, she now has three ladies working for her. Here she can be seen greeting Dirk at the front door of her establishment. Licensed as a medium artesian in Stormhaven. Well, it's been a while in the making, but I finally have finished (sort off) my Stormhaven project (I had planned an interior, but didn't actually finish it - I ran out of tan bricks!). I had ordered the mangrove parts for the Stormhaven minichallenge, but they arrived slightly too late to submit anything. I've tried to match the style set by Mike S in his settlement - Hopefully this should blend in well! Also a smaller version of his and Gideon's mangroves. The slanted panel technique I found on Flickr here. Anyway I really like this build, I think it's probably one of my better ones! Hopefully you agree! C&C are always welcome!
  8. Cooke has finally arrived in Quinnsville, and after apologizing for his extensive delay, he is now discussing the state of the settlement in particular, and Cocovia in general with the mayor. As might have been guessed, Smaugton was not happy with such shabby treatment, but assurances that the delay was due to official duties soon turned Smaugton back to his old cheery self. Cooke is somewhat concerned with the morals of Quinnsville, seeing the number of bars, pubs, and houses of pleasure, and the very public display of various vices, but Sir Smaugton is assuring him that everything is under control. They are touring the settlement, and has currently reached the outskirts, where a baker has set up a considerable house and bakery just by the palisade surrounding the settlement. "Sir Smaugton, I very much respect what you have achieved here, and I mean no disrespect but... I am certain I saw a courtesan conducting... business just around the corner." Cooke exclaimed. "Could not such... services be offered more discreetly?" Laughing merrily, Smaugton replied: "My dear Governor Cooke, I assure you everything here is perfectly under control. We have to let the populace have their entertainment. Otherwise, life in the colonies can grow insufferably dull!" "I suppose so...." Eyeing Smaugton for a moment, Cooke sighed before continuing. "Might I ask you to inform me of the defences of the settlement? Fortifications, troops, militia, gunboats, the sorts." "Of course. As you have undoubtedly noticed, just behind you, we have the city wall, or palisade. As to troops available, there is...." Smaugton explained, going over the defences of Quinnsville. ___________________ Finally got Cooke to Quinnsville as promised a looong time ago. Being commander for all forces on Cocovia, it was about time. It will be licensed as a medium artisan. C&C welcome.
  9. King's Harbour was growing rapidly, and many of the soldiers, sailors and merchants had started bringing in their wives, and with their wives came their children as well. And while initially some of the kids, in highly un-Corlander fashion, enjoyed not having to go to school, the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy quickly remedied this. While the city administration donated a large plot of land in the planned residential areas, the Royal Society has constructed a large school building, and will be sponsoring it going forward. Ensuring education for the young is an important objective of the Society, to ensure that the scientists of tomorrow are groomed from a young age. Winston Fitzherbert the 3rd, fellow of the Society, will be schoolmaster for the children of King's Harbour, and his stern but fair teaching style is appreciated widely amongst both kids and parents. Just now, the kids are arriving for the first day of teaching, being welcomed by the schoolmaster and the groundskeeper. A few of the kids are running late, rushing not to be reprimanded by their new schoolmaster. On the first floor, the classroom is located. Below the classroom, a large library and study houses activities of more advanced students and fellows of the Society, and in the sidewing, an archive is to hold records and specimens collected by various expeditions for further study. Additionally, the groundskeeper has a small house by the gate, awarded for long services as assistant to a fellow of the Society. _____________________________________________________________ Large educational facility for King's Harbour, which will be licensed by the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy. C&C welcome.
  10. Before departing Mooreton Bay, Major Dirk Allcock's agent in Arlinsport contacted him with the news that a small residence had been constructed there for Dirk's use when visiting the Colony. While not planning a visit to Arlinsport anytime soon, Dirk has heard rumours his younger brother may be travelling to Arlinsport to review Dirk's investments in the New World and decide whether or not to direct some of the Allcock family wealth into New World investments. Typical of the rows of terrace housing appearing in the colony, the house is a narrow property with a small street frontage which shares side walls with the neighbouring properties. A view of the back of the house. The house has three stories. The ground floor has a small sitting room and a small area for simple food preparation. The second level is a large room for entertaining guests, either for dinner parties or conferences. The top level is the sleeping quarters, with a large four post bed and an assortment of hats for a fashionable gentlemen! __________________________________ Licensed as a small residence in Arlinsport, Tiberia. While I have been away I have not forgotten BoBS! While I haven't had much of a chance to comment recently and my physical bricks are at home, I have had a chance to play around in LDD. It's been fun, having an unlimited supply of bricks is very cool. It's the first time I've rendered anything, and while it looks great, I feel alot of the detail is probably lost (although admittedly that happens IRL as well!). Looking forward to getting back to my real bricks, although I won't rule out future LDD builds!
  11. On its way, the Strada Maxima intersects with multiple smaller roads. These crossings naturally become centres of activity, and often taverns, stables, or small shops shoot up. At this particular junction in the middle of an agricultural area, something out of the ordinary is under construction. While most Eslandians worship nothing but profits, there are those who still maintain a degree of piety. And on top of that, many foreigners visiting Nellisa will be searching for a place of worship. Therefore, an unknown organisation rumoured to be of Olean origin is financing the construction of a temple at this intersection of the Strada Maxima and a smaller rural north-south road. It is right in the middle of the famous cotton fields of Nellisa, and the farmers are typically more pious than the city-dwellers. Already, light is on in the finished ground floor, where a priest is hosting the first ceremony, while workmen are hard at work erecting the towers that will lead weary travellers to this sanctuary. On the road this morning, we see an Eslandian official rushing past in his small carriage towards some surely very important rendezvous, a group of soldiers escorting a prisoner, a native woman with her child, and a trader, who earlier that day suffered an accident with a broken wheel. Besides the road, apart from the construction site, a young boy is rustling chickens, while a farmer tends his cotton. ___________________________________ Another entry for the Strada Maxima mini-challenge. Wanted to try out a small construction site for the subchallenge. I couldn't seem to get the light right, but on the upside, it looks a bit like sunset. C&C welcome.
  12. Between Montario and Nova Terreli, a small range of hills surrounds the road. In the vicinity of these hills, several small streams cross the road, necessitating a large number of small bridges. At one of these bridges, on the Montario side, an ox cart has broken and lost a wheel. In the process, the cargo of barrelled ores has been scattered and the driver thrown down with an injured leg. This has created a chokepoint on the busy road, stopping several travellers in their path. Luckily for the injured driver, one of these travellers is a doctor of medicine, Sir Anton Hughes, fellow of the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy, and his assistant Ian Collins, carrying the medical supplies. Long since, Corlander scientists recognised the importance of physical exercise, especially for young assistants, and young Mr. Collins is getting his fair share working for Sir Hughes. The doctor is carrying out a year long voluntary medical service on la Strada Maxima, sponsored by the Royal Society. Such voluntary services has long been a tradition for medical gentlemen of the Society, and helps spread the knowledge of the organisation, as well as ensures the volunteer a wide experiences of diverse medical problems. Another hindered traveller is Amin Maleek, Tellvokian dye trader, and his trusty camel. Underway to Montario with a selection of fine dyes for the craftsmen of the Governorial seat, his is shocked by the hindrance. A few other travellers, including a farmer and his wife and son, are gathered around the bridge too, and hopefully the wheel will soon be repaired and the road open once more. ___________________________________________________________ An entry to the Strada Maxima minichallenge - I really want to pick up some shares!
  13. After spending some time recovering from a slight wound taken during the action to take the Garvian privateer 'Black Oak', Major Dirk Allcock has returned to his duties administrating the growing Corlander settlement of Mooreton Bay. One morning, the signal cannon from Fort Denison sounded the arrival of a small Naval Brig that served the Corlander colonies in the Sea of Thieves, transporting people, mail and goods from Arlinsport. After the vessel came alongside the makeshift pier, a small party came ashore, including a somewhat familiar looking figure in the uniform of a senior Naval Officer. As the group drew closer, Dirk recognised the officer as his cousin, Matthew Allcock. Although never particularly close, it was always nice to meet a familiar face here on what often seemed like the very edge of the world, and the two greeted each other heartedly. Matthew, 5 years older than Dirk, had been promoted since the last time they had seen each other and now held the rank of Captain, roughly that of a Colonel in the Army. He explained that he was in Mooreton Bay to take command of the captured Garvian privateer, which would be commissioned into Her Majesties Navy as HMS Royal Oak. Excitedly Matthew Allcock's attention drifted from his cousin to the frigate that stood moored in the harbour. Although repairs continued, under the watchful eyes of a master naval carpenter left by Captain Jonathon Cooke, Governor of the Southern Isles and commander of HMS Ironsides, that had eventually taken the frigate, she still made for an impressive sight, her modern lines, long gun line and dark green hull dominating the harbour. Dragging his attention back from his new command, Matthew Allcock turned to the well dressed civilian who stood patiently at the head of a small entourage, waiting for the two military men. "Forgive me Cousin, Please allow me to introduce Mr James Hume, who has come bearing important news from the Colonial Ministry." After the introductions were complete, Hume revealed he carried new orders for Dirk, who suggested the party retire to the building that was serving as a temporary administrative headquarters for the settlement. Matthew Allcock excused himself, and rushed to find a lighter to take him out to the Royal Oak. Dirk and James Hume continued to the headquarters, where they retired to the room serving as Dirk's office. "Major Allcock, firstly on behalf of the Colonial ministry allow me to congratulate you on your most excellent work here in Mooreton Bay. You have served both your Queen and country well. Due to the skill at which you have demonstrated here, I come bearing orders from the ministry for an important new task for you to undertake, and a commission from the ministry formally relieving you of your duties here so that you may do so." It was revealed that Dirk would be placed in charge of an expedition to the islands recently claimed by Corrington in the Prio Sea. The expedition would be required to conduct an initial survey of the islands, identify the best locations for initial settlements and pave the way for further expeditions and settlement. Dirk was authorised to establish an initial settlement on the Island dubbed Celestia and recommendations were being sought for the location of a military base and fort on the island known as Garma's Key. Key members of the expedition, including scientists and commercial groups interested in the claims of the extensive presence of the rare spice Vanilla on the island of Celestia, together with military re-enforcements were due to arrive in Mooreton Bay shortly. Major Allcock was instructed to conduct a handover of his duties in Mooreton Bay to James Hume, who would take over as Mayor of Mooreton Bay. For Dirk the news was bittersweet. Mooreton Bay had been his project, he had been allowed great freedoms in developing it, and he felt deeply invested in the settlements success. However a new commission, into uncharted territories, full of wonders to be explored, excited Dirk greatly. Not to mention rumours of the unique flora and fauna of Corrington's latest processions. Two weeks later, with the handover complete and the expedition almost ready to depart, Major Allcock formally handed over administration of the settlement to James Hume, in a ceremony in that included many of the leading figures of the settlement. ---- A small build mostly for story advancement purposes. I didn't quite realise how many named characters I had in Mooreton Bay until I had to assemble them for this build! Most made it in! Soon Dirk will depart for the Prio Sea, (He is planning on taking a small detour via Stormhaven first!), to formally claim procession of the Corlander Islands there for the Queen, and establish a new settlement. Unfortunately however, the story will not continue until towards the end of the month, as I am now away from my bricks for a short while I will be by no means abandoning Mooreton Bay - development will continue! In fact I will be licensing this build as a small residence!
  14. The Merchant’s Colonial Trading Company is always looking to expand its trade connections, and establishing partnerships with other colonial powers in the islands is good for business. As Eslandolan governor of An Holli and a regional director of the MCTC, Willem Guilder reached out to Major Dirk Allcock, Corrington’s military governor of Alicentia and a member of the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy, to see where their interests might meet. After a short correspondence during the summer, an agreement was reached. Major Allcock dispatched a man to Weelond to establish an educational facility, and the “Red School” (as the locals call it) was operational in August of 616. At the same time, Governor Guilder dispatched Gerrit Leydecker to Alicentia to establish an MCTC office and warehouse facility in Mooreton Bay. A suitable property near the docks was secured, and as of the end of October of 616, the MCTC warehouse is up and running. Construction is of local materials, but the design is clearly typical of structures found in Weelond. Residents of Mooreton Bay find the Eslandolan design somewhat peculiar, with green double doors on the second floor with no balcony! A small footprint makes financial sense, packing more storage space into a smaller area, and MCTC workers simply hoist barrels and crates up to the second floor loading doors. One of the local militia comes by to see what all the activity is about. Leydecker is still getting settled into his office space on the third floor of the warehouse. He will definitely need more space for shipping records, but he has enough to conduct business. Some additional pics: This will be licensed as a small commerce property. As always, all C&C welcome.
  15. The defence of a Corlander naval base on a largely uncharted island cannot be left to green troops. Thus, a troop of Her Majesty's Winged Cuirassiers has been assigned to King's Harbour. Outside the settlement, a barracks and stable has been erected, fortified against minor threats. Here, we see three cuirassiers riding out of the main gate, likely going on another patrol to map and survey the surrounding areas. The Winged Cuirassiers derive their name from the winged banners they carry atop their long battle-lances, and the breastplates (cuirasses) they carry on their chest against small arms fire and lances. Each section of four Cuirassiers is lead by a bannerman, who, instead of the wing, carries the banner of her Majesty, Queen Anetta. They are elite, shock-troops, and have often been known to turn the tide of battle with their largely unstoppable charge. Armed with a battle-lance, a long-sword, and a cavalry carbine, they are versatile and highly trained troops. Recruited from the universities, and offered good pay and overall conditions, they often transition into important positions in the colonies as their tour of duty ends. ___________________________________________________________ Sometimes, you just need to figbarf and build some troops. C&C welcome. The build will be licensed as a small residence.
  16. The north-western most of the Rider Islands near Cocovia are often the first sight sailors behold, and an important strategic location for both civillian and military navigation. Therefore, a small outpost has been erected on the one called "Hussar's Isle" in preparation for the construction of a large lighthouse. Upon returning from the old world, and most recently a succesful naval engagement against a Garvian privateer and a captured Eslandian treasure galleon, Cooke, now a post-captain, has decided to stop by the new outpost for an inspection on his way to Quinnsville for a long delayed meeting with the Mayor, Sir Thomas Smaugton. Lieutenant Sharpe, commander of the garrison, is now facing his first inspection on an independent command, and the prospect of a godlike creature such as the Military Governor of the Southern Isles is bringing a sweat to his brow, although the last 14 hours since the Ironsides began beating its way against the wind towards the outpost had been rigorously spent in polishing every piece of brass available. The single cannon starting its salute, and the troops lined up for parade, the inspection was becoming very real... Captain's Log, 22nd day of October, 616 AE Raised Hussar's Isle at four bells in the forenoon watch. Winds unsuitable for mooring. Took jolly-boat in for inspection. Lieutenant Sharpe capable commander and troops in good order. Clearing ground for grand lighthouse proceeding as planned. Four bells into the afternoon watch returned to HMS Ironsides. Course lain for Quinnsville. Sails spotted on northern horizon. Private signal answered correctly. Continued on prior course.
  17. The next part in my collab with Ayrlego and my category 4A entry. Prior builds: In the Captains Cabin (Bregir) Pieces Of A Puzzle (Ayrlego) Arriving at Mooreton Bay (Bregir) Continuation: TBD What Major Allcock had to report made Cooke regret the orders he had given Ferguson. The Athena could have evened the scores somewhat, but she would be halfway to Cocovia by now. The curse of hindsight. Cooke pushed aside these fruitless thoughts and considered recent events. Just earlier this day he had stepped aboard the old Ironsides, only to be greeted by a widely smiling version of his old friend Ferguson. "I have been given the honour of being the first to congratulate you on your promotion, CAPTAIN Cooke," he had said, presenting Cooke with a set of glorious golden epaulettes and the news of his promotion. "Post-captain" - he had yet to fully grasp his own bliss. And while the Ironsides was not the frigate he had dreamt of, nor exactly a flyer, she was still a powerful tool if only used right... And he found himself endearing to her already. His orders reaffirmed his position as commander of her Royal Majesty's armed forces on and around Cocovia, and in Ferguson he had been given a competent officer to assist him in this task. Which is why only hours ago, it had seemed so natural to dispatch him with the Athena to Cocovia with the newest orders and directives. Cooke had to admit other duties had forced him to neglect the colony recently, but Ferguson would surely make up for this. It was in the capacity of commander that he was now talking to Major Dirk Allcock, the ranking Corlander military officer on Alicentia and temporary military governor of the colony, and a friend and colleague of Montoya's. Being responsible for the colony, Allcock had been concerned by the build-up of military forces in the neighbouring Garvian colony Leopoldis, which had led him to investigate recent rumours of a large warship being stationed there. "Let me see if I understand you correctly, Major. A Garvian frigate sailing under a letter of marque has arrived in Leopoldis, rumoured to after the largest ever prize of the New World?" "Correct," Allcock interjected. "And you believe the prize is an Eslandian treasure fleet?" "So everything suggests, sir." "You have done good work, Major, very good work. One might take you for a man of intelligence one day. Intelligence work, I mean." Cooke said, forcing a smile. "Thank you, sir! All in the line of duty." Allcock said, bowing his head politely. "Diplomacy be damned... Even though we know all this, there is nothing I can do without risking diplomatic ramifications... We need proof," exclaimed Cooke after a short pause. "Might I suggest getting someone on board the privateer to investigate? We could arrange for certain crewmembers to... fall ill, opening up for replacements..." "A sound suggestion that might give us conclusive evidence," Cooke responded before letting out a sigh. "But it is a dangerous mission... And we would have to ensure our men get picked..." "One of my advisors... Russel should be able to arrange for me and him to fill those openings. He is somewhat of a rogue, but rather well-connected in the relevant... eh... circles..." "Are you willing to take that risk?" Cooke asked, and Allcock nodding in the affirmative. "Very well. I shall row you out myself to see you off. And you must get off that vessel the moment you have the necessary proof - take no chances! When you return, the Ironsides may have to re-earn her nickname..." And so, late next evening, a new purser and his mates were being taken to the "Black Oak" in the port of Leopoldis after the original crewmembers had suffered from alcohol induced comas... "Godspeed, Major Allcock, Godspeed..." "Thank you, Commander Cooke. 18. With the establishment of a hog plantation and salt works to Mooreton Bay, Major Allcock has established a factory to produce salt pork to resupply ships visiting the settlement. Together with hard tack, salt pork forms one of the dietary staples of long ocean voyages. Out the front of the factory, a victualler from a visiting naval vessel arranges the delivery of additional rations for his ship. Inside the factory, which has been sunken into the ground to help keep the temperature down, the process of preserving the meat is carried out. Firstly the pigs are butchered and the meat is cut into pieces ready for preservation. Each piece is then dry rubbed with salt and placed in a barrel of brine for five days to remove the blood (blood can spoil the preservation process). After the five days the meat is removed. An additional layer of salt is added to each piece of meat as it is packed into a barrel. Once full, fresh brine is added and the barrel is then sealed ready for storage. At the rear of the factory a worker loads freshly delivered salt down the specially designed chute. Two of the newly raised colonial militia pass on patrol. _________________________________________________________ Licensed as a medium factory in Mooreton Bay. Inspiration for the build came from @SilentWolf and @Brickwolf 's builds of a hog plantation and salt works. The factory design is heavily influenced by @Elostirion's barrel factory in Nova Terreli. The front wall and roof detach for easy access to the interior. Hope you enjoy and C&C always welcome!
  19. This challenge entry will have a lot of photos and text, so you are forewarned. There is a livery stable in Arlinsport on North Street. It was run by Henry the livery master, and his son Harry. Its ownership was held by the WETEC, though it was being transferred to Henry at a rate of 10% ownership per year that he oversaw the business. Today the trot of horse hooves on cobblestone stopped in front of the livery. It brought Henry to the door. Micah was informed by Henry that Elizabeth had arrived. He came out to meet her. Henry: "Harry get back to sweeping and quit trying to eavesdrop on the young lovers." Harry: "Father, the sawdust can wait..." But he was cut off by a stern look from his father. Micah: "It is great to see you, Elizabeth. You are as lovely as a filly in the spring." Elizabeth: "Thank you, Micah. You always do say the strangest and sweetest things. I have come to expect to hear some magnificent horse reference from you." Micah: "I could always stop if you wish me too." Elizabeth: "Not at all. Please carry on." Micah: "I definitely shall. What brings you down to the livery today?" Elizabeth: "I came to invite you to supper. We have many things to discuss in regard to our wedding in two months, and mother suggested if you came over we could spend the evening finalizing plans." Micah: "That sounds like a good idea. Let us go for a short walk down to the bakery." Right as they reached the edge of the livery, Micah slowed up. His left hand reached for his sword, starting it from its scabbard. Elizabeth: "What is wrong, Micah?" Micah: "I smell a rat." Stranger in the alley: "Greetings, sir. and fair woman. You wouldn't happen to be the one they call Silent Wolf and his fancy fiancee?" Stranger: "Let me introduce myself. I am Philippe the Intelligent." As he bowed deeply. "I hail from the fun town of Pontelli in the wealthy empire of Eslandola. I wish to give you something." Micah had drawn his saber, in uncertainty over this man's contradictions and uncertain motives. For though he was dressed as a gentleman, he spoke like a man who was not used to polite speech. Philippe as he advanced toward them: "I have a business proposition for you. It involves a great treasure that I know of that is sailing soon. It can be yours for a price." Micah: "Elizabeth, would you please go back to the carriage. I would like to speak to Philippe alone. I shall be there shortly." Philippe: "I know of a treasure fleet that is sailing under silence from the new islands back to the Old World. For a fee of 200 doubloons and a share of the end of the profits, I can tell you all I know including where the fleet will be travelling. All you have to do is intercept it and take the treasure for yourself. Imagine us being the richest friends in all of world." Micah always the analytical, skeptical, and thoughtful person, stayed silent. Philippe: "I can assure you my information is valid. I heard it directly from Major Woward Holowitz in Pontelli." Micah: "So it is an Eslandolian treasure?" Philippe gleefully: "Yes, yes it is." Micah: "I see. Well, let me send my fiancee off, then I will get you your payment inside." Micah: "Elizabeth, please tell your mother that I will be there at supper. I am sorry we cannot spend more time, but I have to take care of this business right now." Elizabeth: "I do not trust him." Micah: "Nor do I..." As soon as Elizabeth left, Micah and Philippe entered the stable. A saber swept from Micah's scabbard and planted itself against Philippe's throat. Micah: "Who are you really and what traitorous deeds have you committed? If you mean to do me harm by implicating me among the cutthroats that would start a war for money, I shall kill you where you stand." Philippe with a plaster smile: "I don't know what you are speaking about." Micah: "I know of Major Holowitz. As an officer in the Eslandolean army, he would not betray such secret information to someone who would sell it for profit. Even more if you were a man of honor, you would not stoop to such levels of selling out your own nation. No matter how well you dress I can tell you are not a gentleman." Philippe: "I will not tell you anything. How dare you challenge me, a wealthy man? Besides what does it matter to you. There are many others who paid the prices I set for such information and they will be very upset if I am injured in any way." Micah: "You are indeed not a man of honor. Henry and Harry, tie this man up in one of the empty stalls. We will find out what he knows. Any man who would sell out his own nation has evil plans afoot." Turning to Philippe, "You may have expected to make easy money today. However, there is one thing I cannot stand above all and that is a man of dishonor. No matter your station in life, you should carry yourself with integrity, honesty, and honor. You, sir, with your traitorous schemes have done everything that I would deplore.Even more I am a business man who trades throughout the world. Did you think I would cross Eslandola and risk putting my trade with them at risk? " After a while of questioning, Micah was able to get out of Philippe that he had indeed sold this information to others. Yet he would not reveal who he had sold it too, nor what their plans were. Philippe was convinced that they would let him go very shortly, in fear that these mysterious powerful friends would be too dangerous. Micah was not one to fear, especially in contrast to principle. Micah decided to let Henry have a try with the bullwhip. Philippe may be a criminal, but he is not a true spy. His tongue loosed very quickly when the whip began to play. Henry: "So it appears that he found out by overhearing Major Howitz being told about it. They were talking overtly loud and it became easy to eavesdrop. He followed the Major and was able to acquire more information using his particular set of skills, cat burglary." Micah: "Who has he sold this information too? Do they know the exact route?" Henry: "He said the fleet was supposed to be leaving Nelissa enroute to Terelli. They are supposed to sail past An Holli then meet additional escorts for the time they sail near the larger ports and shipping lanes. He has sold the information to the Order of Oleon, the kingdom of Mardier, and the factions within Garvey. Apparently Garvey intends to send a large vessel to intercept the fleet. It is presently stationed at their settlement on Alicentia." Micah: "Tie up our 'friend' and hand him over to the Eslandolean ambassador. Eslandola shall treat this traitor the way he truly deserves. Plus, they may find he has more information that is useful. Tell the ambassador everything we have found out so far. I will head to the docks and attempt to find a fast vessel heading east that can alert our settlements in Mooreton Bay, or King's Harbor. Maybe they can mount a defense against Garvey's vessel. I will also command the Soupfish to resupply and set sail as soon as possible. Perhaps it can reach our Eslandolean friends and warn them to alter their route. Then I have to get to supper to discuss wedding plans." Edit: Fixed some of the text, and added a photo I missed. To refresh on previous parts of the story, here is a link to all the builds I have done.
  20. Personal Diary, Montoya, 35th day of Montoya-Cooke Expedition Upon entering the cove, I immediately noticed the indigenous structures erected on poles in the water, and asked Cooke to approach it. The natives seemed to expect us, as they were standing on parade with what appeared to be full ceremonial gear, including large shiny brass-shields, gold ornaments and metal-headed spears. Obviously, these people have at least basic practical knowledge of metallurgy, which appears to me a rarity outside the socalled "civilised" world. (One might question how civilised we truly are, considering the amount of ressources we spend improving our ability to smash eachother on the head….) The natives welcomed us most kindly, and as their language seemed to be related to that spoken by the natives of Nelissa, we were able to communicate rather well. The granted us presents of fresh fruits and large brass plates, and the chief told me that many foreign ships had been spotted recently. As we were the first to make landfall, and if we behaved with reason, he was willing to strike an alliance, and help us with supplies and repairs for now and in perpetuity. (He seemd rather well-versed in the challenges of sea-travel. I suspect they are a nautical tribe, who came here by some sort of ship.) In return, we are required to protect and respect his people and customs, and help them to advance. We sat for long hours in the Chief's hut, discussing the situation, and I found that his tribe was rather sizeable and scattered throughout the island, as well as culturally advanced. After the meeting, he allowed me one of his best men as a guide to the Island, to show me the natural wonders here, and we agreed that I might return later to learn more of his people. I shall be leaving with young Baker and a few hands in a few moments. Oh, what discoveries these lands might hold! My mind is fairly overflowing with delight! In the meanwhile, Cooke has embarked upon his habitual frantic naval activity, preparing the cove for God knows what and measuring every little nook and cranny of the anchorage. One wonders the crew abides, with all the wonders here to behold. Custom and loyalty seems to have more leverage on people than I would have believed, and Cooke almost seems to swell in physical size, when exercising command. The men do seem to love him. As he sent off the HMS Otter, I managed to ship a few letters of business, as well as a scientific paper that will certainly make a noise in the Royal Academy! Captains personal log, 35th day, New Terra Expd., Second Entry 48o 43'' 15' E, 68o 23'' 36'; In sheltered cove Entered the cove shortly after noon. Landed at native village. Montoya established contact with natives, who seemed to be friendly and willing to trade. Carried out initial sounding and mapping of cove, which proved to be a fine natural harbour. Dispatched HMS Otter to seek Corlander Royal Navy Expeditionary Force: Suggested setting up base of operations, with proper defenses. (See "Hydrographical Remarks" and "Tactical Remarks" below") Moored HMS Athena in the sheltered cove, broadside to entrance, and established look-outs on shore. Resupplied greenstuff, water and meats through trade with the natives. Montoya and Baker, with a few hands, landed to explore island and establish further contact with natives. Hydrographical remarks: The cove is a fine natural harbour, protected by the elements by two rocky peninsulae of 10-20 m in height. The entrance measures approximately 20 m across, with a fine channel suitable for all vessels. The cove is appr. circular: measures 250 m at the widest point. Depth of the harbour is consistent at about 20 m (See soundings on attached chart) as little as 30 m from shore. The bottom is soft sand, perfect for anchorage. Northern beach is well suited for careening. Tactical remarks: A single battery could entirely command the harbour from the seaside, while the nature of the landscape and the heavy jungle will effectively make a landbased assault impossible. Further, the jungle offers plenty of wood for spars, masts, planking, firewood, etc. and the natives supply a fine, strong, white rope, which, by the look of their own designs, require no tarring to last. It will prove to be a fine base of operations, refitting, and resupplying, and I have thus suggested sending in a platoon of Royal Navy Engineers to fortify the cove. Montoya ensures me that, treated fairly, the natives will support our presence. They have agreed to an alliance. ________________________________________________________________________________ Hereby my entry to challenge 1b. It isn't exactly my best build to date, but I am farily happy with it. The pictures didn't turn out perfect either, but being away from my bricks, I can't redo them. It was fun writing the story from two different perspectives (and different narrative styles), and I hope it makes sense! C&C is welcome, as always.
  21. With tensions rising throughout the Brick Seas, Major Dirk Allcock has authorised the raising of a company of Colonial Militia to augment defences on Alicentia. He can be seen here with their officer, Captain Fredrick Stanley, inspecting a position outside the Militia headquarters overlooking Mooreton Bay. Captain Stanley wears a metal gorget displaying his commission and as a symbol of his authority. A quick vignette for the raising of a company of troops to augment the forts at Mooreton Bay. I will also license the building as a small residence. Full credit for the cannon design goes to workshysteve's MOC here. EDIT: Added detail picture of the cannon construction here
  22. March of the Grenadiers - Victoria Island (AKA Skaford Heights/Isle de Victoria) Colonel Sir Andrew Howe of the Queen's Own Foot Guards consulted the rough map that Captain William Bradley held as the men of Bradley's Grenadier company marched past. The Grenadiers formed the vanguard of the column that consisted of the Corlander force on Victoria Island. The Corlanders were on this island, claimed by Mardier yet settled by Eslandola, as an expeditionary force sent by Her Majesties government. Having accepted the justification for Eslandola's occupation of the island as stated by the Eslandolan Secretary of State, Her Majesties government had decided to aid in halting Mardier's influence in New Terra. Almost immediately after they arrived at this decision however, concerning news of a new proclamation from Terreli had reached Bellson. Apparently King Fernando had recalled all Eslandolan forces from the new world for unknown reasons - some even suggested he may march on Olean to claim the throne he disputed .... Tired of Mardier's constant attacks on her shipping, and wanting to curb Mardier's influence in the new world, Her Majesties Government had decided that Mardier could not be allowed to reoccupy the island that the Eslandolans were calling Isle de Victoria. As a result, the government had immediately dispatched a small military force under command of Colonel Sir Andrew Howe. His orders were clear. Resist any attempts by Mardier to reclaim the Island and protect any Eslandolan civilians who remained after the withdrawal of their military. Sir Andrew frowned, the map was not up to Corlander military standards... somewhere down the column a Major of Engineers was busy sketching away a more detailed version, but for now it was all they had. He was indeed a troubled man. A capable military commander, he believed there were too many unknown variables here. Corrington had yet to establish settlements in the Prio Sea, so the nearest Corlander settlement was quite a distance away. It was unknown how Mardier would react, there were rumours that elements within Eslandola had rejected their King's call to return to Eslandola, and most strange of all, the Colonial Ministry had included the following line in his official orders. "Be prepared to cooperate with and potentially work together with an Olean force under similar orders to your own." It was quite astounding - would he be working with bluecoats? absolutely unheard off.... what was this world coming to??? Sir Andrew's musing was interrupted by Captain Bradley. "Sir, according to this... ah... map, we should be arriving at the site identified by the Ministry for the new fort shortly after noon, if of course, we can keep up this pace" stated Captain Bradley. "The sooner the better Captain, I am keen to get the fortifications started and the artillery train unpacked and set up. We are completely in the dark about the number and disposition of any Mardierian forces that may or may not be present, and the gods know what else is lurking out here..." With that both men frowned, turned back to the column, and continued on... ---------- Ladies and Gentlemen, here is the first part of Corrington's response to developments in the Prio Seas. Official announcements will be issued from Bellson soon. Some may dub this "KMA Red"... or as one Grenadier in the above column was heard mutter... "Them Greenbacks have nuthin' ta worry 'bout now, the real soldiers have arrived" STORY CONTINUED IN THE POST HERE:
  23. A new artisan has opened in Elizabethville, and it has been the rave of the town. The WETEC has not allowed a tavern to be set up so far, in order to prevent drunkenness among the soldiers. Though there is no prohibition, they wanted to avoid the soldiers being able to spend their entire paychecks drinking each month. This new establishment has helped ease the tensions over the lack of a tavern. We had formerly seen the propietors, Joe and Josephine Black voting for the new mayor of Elizabethville, and since then they have been working hard to get the building finished and opened. Joe and Josephine Black decided to open an establishment that specialized in the delicacies from Cocovia. Here the residents can buy cocoa bars and coffee. It also provides a great location to meet and spend time with friends during the evening hours. The place is so popular that they are considering opening up the roof for additional seating in good weather. On rainy days, the shutters are dropped and the inside is the only available seating. They have also already hired a young lady to help serve. There is a new cocoa bar that is available that is processed with milk. It makes a lighter and sweeter tasting delicacy. Though it so far hasn't overtaken the cocoa bars in popularity. (Some rumors claim it was developed in Oleon, but every true Corrington citizen knows that it was developed by Corrington scientists on Cocovia.) Some even drink chocolate and claim it tastes wonderful, though coffee seems to be the preferred drink. Among the women, there is a tendency to add cream to the coffee makes it a tan color rather than its original black. Without further ado, here is the Bittersweet Mug. [COR-FB1] HMS Sovereign

HMS Sovereign did not have the illustrious war record of HMS Sparta, nor is she a match in terms of size, but is nonetheless a survivor of the 49 year war, with a respectable record of participation. Like many other surviving vessels, Sovereign was converted into a supply ship in times of peace. Now she sails with the Royal Navy Transport Fleet, assigned to the New World colony trade routes.
  25. "Haul the main sheets, men. Bring her close to the wind!" Captain Norman Monroe commanded, his eyes fixed on the sails and rigging. The "Blazer" was fresh out of the shipyard in Balondia, and she was proving to be quite a flyer. Closely observing her every move and the lay of her rigging, Monroe was putting her through her paces, finding the limits of her capabilities. For merchant shipping and privateers alike, fore and aft rigging was getting more and more popular on the Brick Seas. While not as fast as square rigged vessels with the wind abaft the beam, it is faster on a bowline and requires less crew, allowing for larger shares per sailor, when the profits are divided. (And, more for the owner...) After finishing the first few trials, and making the necessary adjustments, the Blazer will set sail for King's Harbour with supplies for the naval base, before seeking new employment. Captain Monroe had high standards, and outfitted his crew with uniforms rivalling those of the navy, and that out of his own pocket. The brass was polished and the white manila rigging spotless, and the Blazer was fit for an admirals inspection. Her captain would have no rude comments from his navy colleagues. Thanks for looking - I have included a few more pics - and as always, I would like to hear your comments and suggestions. I am certain I can still improve! (Well, at least I hope!.. ) It is my first go at cloth sails, and I quite like how they turned out. While not perfect, they allow for the next new thing for me on this vessel: The running rigging. While the standing rigging (stays, shrouds, etc.) is quite similar (albeit more advanced and historically correct) to my earlier vessels, the running rigging (sheets, halyards, etc.) is new. In fact, all sails and yards can be raised and operated from the deck, which was a very interesting challenge. It really gives an insight in how complex rigging was in the age of sail! And as the pictures below should show, that is a lot of ropes! If I find rest in my fingers again, I might show a picture where the sails are all lowered and packed away, but for now, I can't handle another round of fiddling with those tiny ropes.
