A few days ago, LEGO has started uploading episodes of "Beyond The Instructions" on their YouTube channel. The idea is that they show an official set and then modify it, often using 3'rd party parts like RC drone equipment, helium balloons, cameras, laser pointers, IE things that are obviously not made by LEGO... wait, isn't that "against the instructions"? Sure is! Now the question is: Is LEGO promoting non-purist thinking? Are they doing it to rattle the brand-loyal builders? Or is there anything positive that you see in these types of experimental videos? PS: The idea is not to endlessly debate if "purism" is good or bad, because that never ends anywhere constructive. It's just to discuss what intentions LEGO might have and what effects there could be in the way MOCers and MODers carry out their hobby.

I'm as susceptible as anyone to "the cult of the new" when it comes to minifigures and bigfigs, prone to oohing and ahhing over LEGO's latest creations. But sometimes I don't get that feeling and find older versions better than newer ones. Here are some examples: This is my favourite Joker (though with the big smile on the double printed head, not the smirk pictured), not the forthcoming one. And here is the Hulk I like most, not this one that came out a year later. I like this Spider-Man more than this one despite it being 10 years older. The ghosts I prefer are this one followed by this one. The more recent CMF one is cool too and I have one in my display collection with a different head, but the ones with the white shrouds are top of my list of phantoms. I realise that these preferences are entirely subjective and that opinions will vary, but was wondering what older versions or minifigures, bigfigs and moulded creatures other FOLs prefer to newer versions. Are there any that have disappointed you or do you always like the latest ones most?

Has anyone here had much like making a flail with the new spiked ball piece we got in series 15 and a short chain? I'm not a huge fan of the single-piece ones, and I've previously made larger, blockier ones but would love this opportunity to make something a lot sleeker looking - but I'm really struggling finding good ways to attach the ball to the chain. Any suggestions?

I wanted to show off all of my purist figs, because I have some that aren't TV show or movie characters, or Superhero figs, so here they are. I will be updating this constantly with new figs. I'm moving all my figs to this topic instead. NOTE: I do not take of minifig arms, as it breaks the torso, but will take off hands, and occasionally legs too. Hi After the overwhelmingly positive response to my James Bond project, which is still a WIP, I have decided to make a sister project of Bond's famous adversaries. Like the Bonds, these will all be purist and I am open to any suggestions, feedback or constructive criticism, enjoy! Please note, some of the descriptions may contain spoilers for the associated movies. Dr Julius No (Dr No) "Unfortunately, I misjudged you, you are just a stupid police man" The first Bond villain, Dr No plans to demonstrate the power of SPECTRE by sabotaging US Space launches from his secret base in Jamaica. Having lost his hands through radioactive exposure, he has metal claws strong enough to crush a gold statue. Donald 'Red' Grant (From Russia with Love) "I get a kick out of watching you, the great James Bond, find out what a bloody fool he's been making of himself." Grant is SPECTRE's most formidable assassin, sent to kill Bond aboard the Orient Express and steal back the top secret Lektor machine he took from the Russians. The figure is carrying the exploding briefcase that causes his downfall after he blows his cover as a fellow British agent by ordering red wine with fish. Auric Goldfinger (Goldfinger) "This is gold, Mr Bond. All my life I've been in love with its colour... its brilliance, its divine heaviness." A millionaire obsessed with Gold, Goldfinger embarks on the crime of the century, to break into Fort Knox, but doesn't plan to take a single bar of gold... Elektra King (The World is not Enough) "You wouldn't kill me. You'd miss me." After her oil tycoon father is assassinated, Elektra inherits the King pipeline, bringing crude oil from Azerbaijan to Europe. She and Bond become extremely close, before she reveals her villainous intent to monopolise oil production with a nuclear meltdown in Istanbul. Gustav Graves (Die Another Day) "You're a rare challenge, Mr Bond. " A wealthy diamond miner, Graves has developed the Icarus satellite, supposedly capable of increasing daylight in parts of the world which normally spend months in darkness, however he is in fact the disguised Colonel Moon, a North Korean war criminal who Bond supposedly killed. Graves and Bond meet during a fencing match, so I have re-created that look here. Le Chiffre (Casino Royale) "I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire." A maths genius and expert poker player, Le Chiffre is also a terrorist banker who uses his skills with statistics to play the stock market, but when Bond prevents a terrorist attack on Miami Airport, his plan to profit from a drop in airline stock fails and he must turn to the casino tables to recoup his loses, hence he is seen here with a gambling chip. Hi I have decided to create a custom minifigure of James Bond for each of the official films, which will eventually include the soon to be released Spectre. For each film, I am trying to recreate Bond's 'signature look' which is easier for some films than others, any ideas, comments and criticism is welcome. These are the ones completed so far, all are purist Dr. No Being the first film, I went for Bond's iconic tuxedo and, since the only guns are revolvers which don't really match what Bond uses, I have given him a Martini glass. From Russia with Love For most of the film, Bond wears a light grey suit and tie, this one I think is a good match. I have given him the sniper rifle he uses in the film and the brown suitcase represents the Lektor machine he is assigned to steal from the KGB. Goldfinger One of the most famous scenes in Goldfinger has Bond and the villain play a tense game of golf. The outfit here is very similar to Bond's but in the wrong colour, his sweater should be a dark red or brown, but I haven't found a better match so far. He is seen here holding the bar of Nazi gold he wagers against Goldfinger in the match. You Only Live Twice In You Only Live Twice, Bond must disguise himself as a Japanese fisherman in order to infiltrate Blofelt's base. I have recreated that look here with a black kimono and Japanese wig. While Bond himself does not actually wield a samurai sword in the film, several other characters do and it seemed a good fit. On Her Majesty's Secret Service The first film without Sean Connery, hence I have given Bond a different face and hair. For much of the story, Bond impersonates a Scottish Baronet, in appropriate attire. As he proposes marriage in the film, I have given him a wedding ring. Licence To Kill One of Timothy Dalton's two films sees Bond pitted against the evil drug dealer Franz Sanchez and cut off from MI6, so his sharp suits give way to more practical clothing. As the story revolves around drugs and money, including $5 million dollars Bond steals from Sanchez, Bond has a bank note here. These are all of the Bond's I have completed so far. Hi there! (This part can be ignored) I'm currently doing a project that involves taking every currently available D&D 5e miniature and making them into Lego. I've been doing my preliminary thoughts, and a problem came up: (Important starts here) I need a way to make minifigs larger without being Bigfig sized, partly due to the minimal customisation options of Bigfigs. So I'm asking you guys for help; how can I make a larger figure without going Bigfig? Any questions just ask. Thanks, and I look forward to you guys sage advice.

More than 8 remote channels?

Hello, is it possible to use more than 8 channels with current power functions RC solutions? I'm interested in original LEGO (no 3rd party) The problem that I encountered is - LEGO receivers have only 4 channels, thus you can power only 8 individual channels. If one needs more channels and adds more receivers - some of them will eventually use the same channel and trigger unwanted simultaneous function use. I didn't have much time to think about this, so maybe there is a simple answer that didn't came to my mind straight away. Could anyone suggest a solution that won't include manual gearbox switches? -
Has anyone else here recreated the Yellow Lantern Batman as seen in the LB3 75th Anniversary DLC pack? Here's an image of him so you don't have to google it yourself: I realized that all it takes is Sinestro's body (replace his hands with black ones) and legs, and a Batman head, second most recent cowl style, and cape, so I made him for my minifigure collection, and I think he looks really awesome. The only thing missing is his ring, but that's unavoidable. I'll post a picture here of my version of him now, but I didn't think that was needed before because it is literally exactly like the image above, except, of course, for his expression. -Nomad

I very rarely do purist stuff so this was a refreshing change of pace for me! AVALONIA The Elven Wardancer The Elven War Dancer protects the trees of the Enchanted Forest who can't protect themselves. He is also a friend to the small folk who dwell within, the pixies gnomes and dryads. His eyes blaze with the fury of the righteous as he somersaults into combat. The Serving Girl The Serving Girl works in the banqueting hall of The Avalonian Lairds. She loves the hustle and bustle of the Hall. Her favourite part is hearing of the legendary quests completed by the Avalonian Heroes. The Gamekeeper He is the Warden of the Lairds grand estate. Looking after the fish and fowl is his main job. Those who steal from his Laird will first find "quarrel" with him. KAPHILIN The Nomad Raider They roam the deserts of the Kaph. Raiders are equally comfortable fighting on camel back or as skirmishers. Using the cover of sandstorms their guerrilla tactics are rightly feared. They're detailed knowledge of the desert oasis' and geography makes them a formidable fighting force despite their seemingly low numbers. Hill Tribe Tomb King In life he was a mighty king who united the hill tribes. In death he still reigns over his subjects. Peaceful by nature, if the safety of Kaphilin is threatened he will stir his people to action! The Entertainer She was a slave but since gaining her freedom she has amassed a great fortune entertaining Nobles of Kaphilin such as the Masa himself. The Stone Cutter He is the architect behind some of the greatest palaces and sculptures of the Kaph. Nothing makes him happier than bringing the sandstones of the desert to life! MITGARDIA The Valkyrie Once every 10 generations a true Heroine rises from the ranks of the Mitgardian shield maidens. A fallen shield maiden will arise from death. Although not immortal the Valkyrie has phenomenal strength and unmatched Valor with a second chance at life gifted by Odin. It is said her battle song heartens the soul and has magical calming effects. The Blacksmith He tempers a sword blade at his anvil. His Thunder Hammer can be used to forge weapons or crack the skulls of his enemies as he sees fit. A much respected figure by folk short or tall. (he wears a yellow armored tunic to protect him from the heat of the forge). The Northern Bannerman He is a hero of renown. He wears the colours of Mitgardia with pride and is a champion within their ranks. born a humble lumberjack his rise has been meteoric! The Clan Chieftain He is a Mighty Warrior and respected diplomat. He likes to fight, feast, drink and carouse! The Chieftain is always accompanied by his faithful hunting companion Nanuk. NOCTURNUS The Reptrian This beastie is a guard at the labyrinth of Kelra. Those who wish to cross the border at Kelra must first pay tribute or risk being hounded through the labyrinths myriad of dangerous corridors. The Necromancer She is a mistress of dark magic. She reanimates the dead to do her dirty work (her washing, cleaning and disposing of unruly peasant mobs). The Drow Underdark Paladin An agent of the Usurper, he is an envoy of murder. Skilled in all weapons and armour, the Paladin favours plate armour, shield and his wicked machete blade. Bred in the caves of the underdark their skin is luminescent and their silver hair is Tarred black and rigid. Its spikes are a deadly weapon. Obey or be destroyed... The Gorgon The Gorgon lives in a network of caves in the mountains of Nocturnus. Her petrifying gaze means she is very lonely, her only friend is a Stone Troll from the neighbouring valley. VALYRIO The Palace Guard Honest as the day is long and loyal only to the Amancio Family. The Palace Guard of Valyrio serves at the leisure of the Rego. AVALONIA Avalonians unite! MITGARDIA For the Glory of Mitgardia! KAPHILIN All hail the might of Kaphilin. NOCTURNUS Beware the Underdark!

Adventurers Figure Refresh: The Bad Guys

I have posted my good guys (with a few exceptions who will turn up in the future) now on to what makes or breaks any story: the bad guys! As a note, these are rebuilds of characters I owned as a child or knew of from the little scraps of story and set pictures in the catalogues. There might be some missing and I will get to those if there is any special request, because the villains of a childhood game leave a bigger impression than something you come across as an adult. As I said in the Good Guys post I have been using the nice new parts, colours and prints to rejuvinate the older characters. These were all posted with MOCs in the A&A forum but here I will post some more of the process information. Each character will link to the original figure or the version I drew ideas from if there was more than one. So, onto the baddies! First and foremost we have the infamous Baron Von Baron. Now, Baron is the name I came across when I had my first figure from the Bi-plane set. In later Adventurers sub themes he was sometimes called Lord Sinister, which was confusing because that was already a character that had appeared! I decided on the look quite easily, the head is an original and a dark bley pith helmet adds a certain menace to the ensemble. Epaulettes in brown becuase all the old white ones are facing dire sun damage and gold looked too OTT. Dressed in smart but high class suit. Baron is a man of wealth and taste, hence the gold hook. The torso is Lucius Malfoy's, but I can't recall which set exactly that came from. Because the Baron has a duelling scar he must be good with a blade, so the new fencing foil replaced the less refined pistol. Sam Sinister (aka "Evil Eyes" aka "Slyboots") always seemed to be a bit of a gangster to me. A bit of a chancer who deals in grey to black market goods, so all the names figured in fine, they were aliases he used to keep the heat off! The hat and head were iconic so I had to use them, there isn't a face print yet that can come close to the right look. The torso is from the Gangster CMF, a tidy suit for a legitimatre businessman is a must after all. The gun is a bit anachronistic, though it looked good on the figure. In my games he was a little inspired by Batman the Animated series' Joker. So always one to carry an unconventional weapon. Alexis Sinister, sister of Sam (from what the official Minifigure and LEGO Book says) was a figure I wanted really badly. Alas she only featured in Dino Island and only in the larger sets, so was beyond my reach. Attempts at creating the figure led to a classy cat burglar kind of character which I attempted to create here. The haircut is one suited to the era I personally set the adventures and the head first appeared in Agents (this head is Clawdette from this combo...) and works as a replacement to the older print. I like the pupils and expressive eyebrows. The torso is Wild West Wyldestyle and was perfect, from the skull choker to the presented figure. She's just as able to slip in to some fancy party and make of with a prized artwork as she is to slip unseen into a tomb or museum for relic theft. The legs are from Space Police, carrying on with the skull theme. Again, the Lone Ranger gun (I just have so many, they are great!) finished off the deadly look. Rudo Villano (or Max to some.) was the jungle bad guy I had. Unfortunately, everything from the head down face terrible wear and print loss. The old hat was the same as Johnny Thunder's but that meant it was a good guy hat! This black fedora replaced it suitably. The face print is my best choice to match. There is the stubble, the angry expression and the scars were just what I needed. It is from the CMF barbarian figure. Next the torso, the old dark grey shirt from the original lent itself to a scruffier look. One again the CMFs came up trumps, the Biker torso paired well with the gunbelt printed legs to make a bad guy jewel runner from the jungle. A machine gun both worked for the character and the MOC. This is a major major change to the actual Adventurers theme. Senor Palomar was the original character. I was unimpressed I'm afraid to say. Thus, Senor E. Palomar took his place. He is a gent, a land or ranch owner. The sort of unexpected bad guy any adventurer might come across; a genial host who takes in the explorer to his fine estate so they might sleep under a roof (and access plumbing) for a night, then the adventurer finds themself shouting "IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!!" At him as he sails away downriver with a craftily thieved artifact a number of days later. The hat is Lone Ranger's, white as a nod to the original minifig and to the sort of character I had created. The head is from the Space Hero CMF, a print that looked far too smug. The suit is from an old LEGO Movies horro subtheme and a wonderful Lone Ranger gun. These are the figures I have made so far. Adventurers Figure Refresh: The Good Guys

Hello! I have been refreshing the old Adventurers figures with new parts, colours and prints. So far I have been keeping things posted with MOCs, but a lot of people who might enjoy seeing the figures don't really browse the A&A forum so I thought to post them here with more of the "process" information. This post will be for the 'Good Guy' characters. The figures that feature are re-builds of the figures I had as a child, so there may be some characters missing from the line-up, though I like to think that the main players are all present! Every name is a link to a picture of the first figure issued. First up we have Johnny Thunder himself. The hat is, of course, the design from Lone Ranger but in the reddish brown shade, I picked that up in a LEGO Movie set. I had hoped to use the re-released classic hat in reddish brown but the dropship set is rather expensive. This hat is a nice medium between the Indiana Jones fedora and Johnny's hat. I was fortunate to have the newer version of the head print with the white pupils becuase I really wanted to leave his face as it was in the original theme, while I had no qualms about using new faces for other characters, Johnny is just too cool to change too much. The torso is from Pharaoh's Quest, it was Jake Raine's but I thought he looked better in the tan shirt so Johnny got the gear. The legs are Indiana Jones prints, the gunbelt is a nod to the classic print on the original Johnny Thunder torso and also, seeing as you can take it that Johnny Thunder is either a nod to Doctor Jones or the source material that birthed them both, it felt right. Plus I just love the dark tan colour. Finally there is the Lone Ranger pistol, the more detailed tooling of the gun is visually pleasing in comparison to the older pistols so I used a lot of them within my Adventurers refresh. Next there is Pippin Reed, ace reporter! Again, the delightful dark tan colour make an appearance, the pith helmet is unchanged from the original mould but this one looks smarter than the white one. I chose this face print, a newer printing of the first Pippin Reed (see the pupils) because the version I had was from the Egypt sub-theme. The other Pippin Reed print is much too 'bulky' if you get my meaning, for the longest time I thought that Gale Storm and Pippin Reed were two different characters when I finally cme across names. Full disclosure: In my games and adventures, only Johnny Thunder had the 'correct' name. My lady adventurer was always called Lara... Next up is the torso, this was from the Collectable Minifigures Series 2 Explorer. The red ascot is similar to the scarf that the original torso print had while the strapped on water bottle is like the printed camera. I loved the explorer figure parts so using this torso was a given. The dark red legs are a replacement for the regular red from the actual figure, again, the dark shades look a lot smarter than the brilliant basic shades. I suppsose that muted colours are more appealing to me. The camera is a must, I never had one when I was younger but this one is bulky enough to work within the setting Adventurer's have so I happily used it. Here we have Harry Cane. The reddish brown aviator helmet and dark bley goggles look sharper than the old brown and black, I wanted the goggles to match with the harness printed on the torso. The face has is new too, Harry Cane never had a re-issue with pupils printed in so I chose another. This cleaner cut but still rascally looking face was first used in Knights Kingdom 3 for one of the named knights but quickly became a generic for Castle, Viking, Pirate and even Football minifigs. I thought it looked good for a more respectable Harry Cane, less stubble and more beard. The epaulettes are old brown but are minimal enough a detail that it doesn't look too bad (I hope) the torso is from the Naboo Starfighter pilots, I loved the whole look, but then the original suits that inspired them are from the era I set Adventurers. I was fortunate enough to pick up number of the torso from the online PaB to make a little crew of fighter pilots. The legs are plain until I can find just the perfect looking printed ones, though the pilots were mostly unencumbered in the leg area. Doctor Charles Lightning, or, as I named him Doctor Carter (I was a bit of an odd child, I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was six...). A dark bley pith helmet looks better to my eyes than the white, I really am not the biggest fan of bright colour in this setting. I had to use the old head, nothing was good enough to replace it, maybe some time in the future a face print will be perfect, but the classic look is so much better. I think the glasses hide the issue anyway. The torso is from the series 5 Collectable Minifigures Detective. I wanted a torso that was fit for the lecture hall or the dig site! Though I do miss the bow tie from the original (bow ties are cool) nothing in the newer colours and sharper printing of current LEGO worked to my eye. Again, if something comes up which will look better I might change it. Finally we have Mike. Mike is the biggest change of all the figures. I really wasn't overly fond of the character in the first place. The freckles didn't look right, the fringe was messy but he had a pretty blank look. Maybe too was the fact that my younger brother insisted on playing as 'him' when he played along and that was never fun for me! This Mike is slightly aged up (the slingshot from the original figure always put me in mind of a kid). The longer hair is a nod to the fringe and the head is one of the varied but still 'generic' City face prints. I thought it made him look like he had a bit more wits about him. The torso print is from Monster Fighters and refrences the waistcoat he had originally while looking more grown-up. Jeans from the CMF series 8 DJ. Jeans were around at the right time and would be fine for a dig (they still are today!). With this minifig I thought; just how would someone dress if they admired an Adventure Archaeologist? The Master is the arch enemy of The Doctor, a fellow time lord, he has the ability to regenerate at the point of death and like The Doctor has been played by a number of actors. I present the 6 incarnations of The Master in minifigures form, hope you enjoy- all feedback welcome! The First Master The Master was first introduced during the Third Doctor era, an old friend turned enemy of The Doctor, the first Master was a shadowy and maipulative figure who often used others to do his bidding. The character was retired after the real life death of actor Roger Delgado.

Purist Iron Patriot minifig - for those who can't get the official

Hi guys. I was playing around with some Marvel parts and made this purist Iron Patriot. I'm in NZ so the official one won't be possible for me to get/afford. Hope you guys find some use with it. Head: Rhodey head with Iron Man helmet and War Machine visor/mask. Torso: Captain America Torso. Wais/legst: Dark red waist with dark blue legs. Here are a couple of photos: -KingPixels -
Well, I said I'd post 'em, so here they is. All eleven incarnations of The Doctor, all purist, and all-most all totally 'fantastic!' Group shot, they all look quite brilliant together, wouldn't you say? First through Third Doctors, can't say I like this first period of Who stories, but there are quite a number who do. The Third Doctor's fairly good though. 1: By far my weakest design, but all the good torsos for him are from the Harry Potter line which I didn't collect. 2: This one is pretty cool, just wish the head had a bit more of a smile. 3: Uses too many Balin parts, but other than that it's fairly cool. Fourth through Sixth, Four has some nice stories, Five had terrible companions, and I haven't seen much of Six. Just barely enough to say he's not as bad as they say. Oh, and "Would you like a Jelly Baby?" 4: It's a fair design, but prints with scarfs are few and far between. This is one of the more mediocre figures in my opinion. 5: I like this one, but again, while it's not that accurate to his looks, it seems to capture the right essence. 6: Meh, an ok design for this doctor. That's pretty much the only torso for him, but the rest just seems too plain. Seven and Eight, Seven is cool. Eight only got the one movie, but delivered an entertaining performance nevertheless. Still, it was a 90's movie, so it's not that great. 7: Interesting design, love the head, but the torso is a bit off. Tried the umbrella as you can see, but can't say I like it. 8: I really like this design. The torso/leg set is amazing, and the head/hair combo looks great. And now to Modern Who, which is in my opinion, the best of the best. (Except 'Love and Monsters') Nine left way too soon, but was excellent, Ten was great, and Eleven is my favorite. 9: The leather jacket is perfect, but this is a fairly simple design. Probably should have used the normal Lex head, but that was tied up on a different minifigure. 10: Again, quite simple build, no rare parts or anything. Please don't ask why only he gets a Sonic. And if only Lego made an overcoat... 11: Yes, Fezzes are cool, and so are bowties. Can't say I love the hair and head, but they're the best choices out there. The Legion of Doom: Complete The Legion of Doom, from Challenge of the Super Friends created in Minifigure form. Gotta say this took months to put together; but it was well worth it! There’s a variety of Custom and Purist figures. Brainiac is a Custom Printed figure by Green Pea Toys.
