Help with Digital Renders
Bricked1980 replied to Bricked1980's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Many thinks for sharing these links @LegoModularFan. I came across some of these images when I was researching different methods for rendering and the one above is one of my favourites. It's honestly very difficult to tell this is a digital image. Anyway I think it's safe to say that the most realistic results are the ones created using mecabricks. Unfortunately I didn't discover this until I was well under way designing my brick square post office and by this point I had almost finished the design using ldd. If you check out my Flickr page, most of the pics of my mail van were actually generated using mecabricks. I couldn't use this for the main building though because when I tried opening the ldd file in MB loads of the parts were either missing or misplaced. It would have been a huge headache to try and put them all right so I opted to use different methods to render the building shots instead. I am quite pleased with results overall. Anyway, I have actually started work on a new moc project and this time I am determined to try and learn the basics of MB as I do think this gives the best results when it comes to rendered images.- 26 replies

That roof looks awesome and pretty unique. I love all the little scenes going on with the mini figs in this model. I thought it was a pretty inventive idea to use the leg parts in that way. I agree it is not necessarily the most attractive result but it is still a creative idea. Also it does seem slightly macabre to use body parts in this way. But lego have been using transparent mini fig heads as plant vases and street lamp bulbs in the modulars for years.

Thanks. I am hoping to put instructions together for this model and Queen bricktoria as soon as get round to it. Many thanks snaillad. Glad you like it. I hope you do bother - I would love to see your version of a post office. Ha ha great idea. And after that all that will be left is Costa Coffee and Poundland, then I'll have a complete British high street. I certainly would love to at some point. Problem is I would also like to build my other modular, the queen bricktoria. The question is which one to buy the bricks for first?

This looks amazing. A lot of people (myself included ) tend to just use the straightforward chequered tile technique when it comes to floors, but I love how you've created yours with loads of interesting and textured bricks to create those fantastic patterns. It looks incredible and very realistic. Also as other have mentioned already, the way the floor steps down slightly in the centre is a really nice touch as well. All the colours go together perfectly and help to give a great vintage art deco feel, full of atmosphere. Great work!

Thanks very much Kristel, I'm pleased you like it. Thanks. I'm glad you like the van as this is the first time I've created a MOC vehicle and I wasn't sure what sort of reaction it would get. The original idea was to create a lego version of one of these beautiful Morris J Type vans, that were used by the British Royal Mail during the 1950's. As the design evolved though I ended up straying away from this style a bit and the end result is a sort of generic looking vintage van which is only loosely inspired by one of these Morris vans. Thanks so much! I thought it would add more interest to set one of the buildings further back than the other, and it also gave me the chance to build the post office as a kind of corner building with the front door set at an angle and the side wall visible as well as the front. The main reason I added the block of stairs between each building was to split them apart and make them appear more separate. Originally I didn't have the stair case at all and it didn't look right with both buildings butting right up next to each other. That's a great comment! Thanks very much! Thanks very much for this lovely comment Littleworlds! It was a lot of fun coming up with the characters, scenes and other finishes touches, so I'm glad you like it! Thanks very much. I'm trying to come up with some ideas to include in my next MOC. Not sure whether to tackle another modular building next or whether to do something different!

Steinbruck - Modular town & Vehicles (NEW: Corner Square)
Bricked1980 replied to Nightfall's topic in LEGO Town
They look great. Congratulations by the way. I noticed these have been featured on the brothers brick earlier today. -
Hopefully there would be some way of modifying it so that it works better. I was hoping that it might be possible in some way to motorise this set in a similar way to the big expert rollercoaster but it seems that even if this could be done there still wouldn't be enough momentum to get the cars around the track without having to shove them by hand, which seems a shame. I do understand that this set is aimed at a younger age group than the big coaster though and most kids would be more than happy to just push the cars around the track.

This is an awesome looking pub. Just checked out the other pics of this model and the bar and interior are also very nicely done.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bricked1980 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Here's a very interesting interview with Jamie Berrard talking about creator expert in general, but from around 12:30 in to the video he talks about the diner and how much input he had in the design. He also mentions the possibility that he might get the chance to design the modulars again at some point in the future. -
Great job. This looks fantastic in real bricks. The interior is very nice in this modular. Look forward to seeing the shots of this in your city layout.

That's a very kind comment koalayummies. Thanks a lot. Thank you legomodularfan. Glad you like the roof. At first I was a bit concerned it looked kind of similar to the roofline on my queen bricktoria moc even though it is built completely differently. I do enjoy designing the roofs as it gives the chance to use some novel and unusual pieces to create different textures and shapes, that you wouldn't normally get the chance to use anywhere else on a building. Regarding the other roof on the post office building, this is the first time I'd done a sloped roof and this was one of the things I knew I definitely wanted to include right from the start with this moc. On an earlier draft of the model both buildings were slightly wider and I didn't have the 4 stud wide stair well running between them at all. Originally the windows were spaced further apart but I ended up closing this gap to make space for the stairs to be added. I see what you mean though, maybe an extra stud width between them would have looked better. Many thanks. Wow, only just spotted this. That's a very nice and unexpected surprise. Huge thanks to the EB staff for adding it to the front page and for the write up @Pandora.

[MOC] LEGO Pirate Ship Ride - Powered by a XL motor
Bricked1980 replied to ProjectGBK's topic in LEGO Town
This is a terrific design. I had actually mentioned a few days ago that I thought one of these pirate ships would be a good candidate for a future fairground set. This is just the sort of thing I had in mind. It looks very nice indeed and the quality of your video and presentation is top notch. Good luck with your ideas submission. -
Just finished watching Jangs review. I like this set a lot but I do agree with his disappointment about the fact the cars don't really run freely around the track without first having to give them a big shove. That's a shame because otherwise it's a fantastic set.
-
Now there's some novel part usage. Minifig legs to create the roof. That's a technique I've never seen before.

Creator Expert Cars - Rumors, Discussion, and Speculation
Bricked1980 replied to SheldonF's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The July store calendar has now been revealed. It mentions that from July 18th there will be exclusive VIP early access to a mystery d2c set. My guess is that this could be the new creator car. The timing is about the same as last year's London bus release. -
Many thanks for the kind comments guys! Thank you, glad you like it! Unfortunately it clocks in at around 3400 parts so I think that makes it too big to be accepted as an Ideas project. Maybe I could submit a version without the mail van though. Thanks a lot! My original intention was to create something similar to Assembly Square or Detectives office where the model appears to contain more than 1 building. So I'm pleased you think it resembles Assembly Square in some way! Thanks! Yes I would love to see Lego release an official Modular post office as well. Thanks very much and I'm pleased you think this is a step up from my QB pub! Also thanks for your constructive criticism about the ground floor of the post office. Whilst designing this I was conscious of the fact I was trying to cram quite a lot in to a relatively small 32 x 32 space, and was concerned it could look too cluttered if I wasn't careful. This is why I tried not to go too over the top with exterior detailing, but maybe a bit extra on the ground floor of the post office wouldn't have hurt! Thanks a lot, I'm pleased you like it! Many thanks! I would love nothing more than to build this with real bricks, so hopefully I will be able to buy the bricks and do this at some point.

Help with Digital Renders
Bricked1980 replied to Bricked1980's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Many thanks to everyone who has offered their advice over the last couple of weeks about the best methods to use for rendering my images. I've just finished my latest LDD project and in the end I used a combination of 3 tools to render the pictures. I used Bluerender, Busufl and the mecabricks in-house rendering system. If you're interested you can check out the results here...- 26 replies

Hi everyone I'd like to present my latest MOC, and the follow up to my previous Modular, "The Queen Bricktoria Pub". This time I've designed another British style building, a Post Office, set some time during the late 1950's. There is much more to it than just a Post Office though. Read on to find out more... As you can see this modular building has 3 floors and is built on a 32 x 32 base plate. I have designed it to appear as 2 separate buildings situated around a small town square. The post office is intended to be the main focus of the model but the building on the right also contains a fish & chip shop and other businesses. The Minifigures I've included 6 minifigs with this MOC. From left to right they are: Post Office Worker, Post Office Manager, The Postman, Chip Shop Owner, Cafe Barista and a Business man. Brick Square and Ground Level Details Both the buildings are arranged around "Brick Square". I've included a small flowering tree in the centre of the square and outside the post office there is a pillar box, bench, rubbish bin and flower pots. Outside the fish and chip shop is a table with parasol. The Pillar box is a simple build made up from 2x2 round bricks, plates and tiles, stacked up and held together with a technic axle running through the middle. The shaped slot section towards the top is made from a red wheel flipped on its side. Sandwiched between both buildings is a shared stairwell which can be accessed from the street. This is how the minifigs access the upper floors. The Post Office The pictures below show the interior of the post office. Mail Sorting Office On the floor above the post office is the room where all the mail gets sorted, ready to be sent out. This room is accessed via the stair well outside the post office. Fish & Chip Shop Another iconic British building - a fish and Chip Shop. The shop sells chips, battered fish, burgers, sausages and drinks. Coffee Shop Above the Fish & Ship Shop is a little cafe with a coffee machine, cake stand, table and seat. In the corner of the cafe is a stair case leading up to the top floor. Office Above the cafe is an office used by a local businessman. I've included a desk with drawers, telephone and paperwork. There is also a grandfather clock and plant pots. Mail Van I have also included a vehicle with this MOC, a vintage style Mail van. The Finished Model Here is a shot of the Brick Square Post Office, alongside my other modulars, The Queen Bricktoria and Convenience Store. If you'd like to read more about these other MOCs then follow the links below. Convenience Store Queen Bricktoria Thanks very much for reading. If you'd like to see more pictures of the Brick Square Post Office then head across to my Flickr page, I've added over 60 pictures of it there. I hope you like my latest MOC, feel free to leave comments and let me know what you think. EDIT: Building instructions for this MOC are now available from Rebrickable at the following link https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-22101/Bricked1980/brick-square-post-office/#comments

I've just been looking at the lego website at all the new sets available from today and stumbled across this https://shop.lego.com/en-GB/Microscale-LEGO-Brand-Store-40305 This had been rumored for the past few weeks to be a future promo set but it seems that's not the case. It's available to buy right now from the UK lego store. I know it's not really a city set but I think it's a fantastic looking little model and will fit in perfectly with other city buildings. It's only £21.99 as well.

This looks very good indeed. I especially like the shots with all the extra tools and machinery attached to the tractor. Great work. -
Allan's Speed Champion inspired vehicle and building creations.
Bricked1980 replied to AllanSmith's topic in LEGO Town
This is looking great. The brick built signage looks fantastic. Also those door frames work very well for creating angled windows. -
For anyone missing the old style of "mini modular" creator buildings, what do you think of this new set 40305? https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-brand-store-40305-official-images/ I know it's not a creator building but I think it looks a terrific little set and would look pretty nice alongside the corner deli, bike shop and cafe etc.
