    The Tulip Traders

Pontelli. Early Afternoon. A crowded tavern In a back room we find an assembly of merchants and traders, trading and discussing. (at the table from left to right:) Thomas Guilder (standing in for Senior Merchant Habakus) Willem "Chuck" Norris Slim Shady Fred the shopkeeper (yes, he is sitting now) Lady Beetle Sir Krantenhagen (Secretary) Sir Krantenhagen: Well, before we close our weekly trade meeting, I would like to bring up a new topic, which seems to be quite in fashion with customers these days. Lady Beetle: And what would that be? Sir Krantenhagen: Tulips, Mylady. Lady Beetle: Those flowery thingies? Sir Krantenhagen: Precisely. Lady Beetle: What about them? Sir Krantenhagen: Well, it seems that their trade has increased quite significantly over the pasts few weeks. And so have the prices. There is quite a lot of dubloons to be made with tulips. Willem "Chuck" Norris: Yes, I can add to that. Actually I have a new shipment of tulips coming in tomorrow. Slim Shady: What type of tulip, if I may ask? Willem "Chuck" Norris: Those Mondials. Slim Shady: How much do you want for them? Willem "Chuck" Norris: Well, that will be a dubloon each. Sir Krantenhagen (surprised): Such much? Lady Beetle (undeterred): How many tulips are shipping in? Willem "Chuck" Norris: About 25. Slim Shady: I'll take them. All of them. Willem "Chuck" Norris (smiling): That's a done deal then. Lady Beetle: That leaves nothing for me then? I am just a Lady, sitting in front of you, asking you to give me some tulips. Fred: She's right. Once you have realized that you want to spend the rest of your life selling tulips, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible Thomas Guilder: I think I can help you out. Habakus is expecting a delivery of fine Royal Blues. About 30. That could be 15 for both of you. Lady Beetle: And I thought sellers and buyers could never be friends. How much? Thomas Guilder: Also one dubloon per tulip. Lady Beetle and Fred smilingly agree. Sir Krantenhagen (distracted): What is that noise coming from the entrance? Waiter: I am very sorry, Sir. There is a strange guy from Corrington, who is trying to educate everyone of a new monetary system. It is said to consist of pnence. Sir Krantenhagen: Pnence, schmence. Get rid of that guy! (pausing) And I think that concludes our trade meeting for tonight. (all leave) Captain Cookie (to himself): There is more to this tulip thing than I initially thought. If this goes on they are going to be more precious than gold! The story so far: Something for a Lady Buying Some Flowers Captain Cookies next move Gray's Universal Store What is he doing here? 3. Abe Gray's Universal Store was one of the most popular shops in Pontelli. His oldest daughter usually watched the shop and his younger daughter usually watched her little baby brother and ate cookies while she thought her sister wasn't looking. But how well it went with the business was testified by the fact that both his girls were always dressed in the lattest elegant fashion, frills and puffed sleeves and all. Sadie saw to that, although some detractors said sometimes that her sister looked like she was dressed in a sack - but that was ridiculous. Pirates do not window-shop. That's just not a pirate thing. But it must be admitted that when Captain Nordau saw some tulips in the window of Gray's Universal Store he did a very un-pirate-like thing and walked in. He had heard just a little bit ago that Captain Cookie had bought some of Pontelli's new tulips. And he was not one to be behind other pirate captains for long - it would never do. "Arr, did I see some tulips in the winder of this 'ere 'stablishment, miss?" "Yes you did, sir," replied Sadie. "Those are Mondials - they are one of the rarest kinds around. Here you see." "Ay, indeed. I hear that Captain Cookie has bought some Pontelli tulips." "Oh yes, sir, indeed he did. Everybody heard of that. But he bought some of the Orange Emperor tulips. These are Mondials." "Aha, much better, I shall outdo him yet," exclaimed Captain Nordau triumphantly. "Now how much are these? They're better than his, of course, right? I wouldn't pay less than Captain Cookie did for some." "No fear of that," said Sadie to herself. But all she did was smile up at Captain Nordau and think that he was clearly not an Eslandolan. "Yes, of course. These are three-quarters of a doubloon. Captain Cookie's was only a half-doubloon." "Oh yes, excellent. Here you are. And these are one of the rarest kinds you say?" "Certainly, thank you." "No problem miss, anyday," said Captain Nordau as he walked out with his new purchase. He had only just left and Sadie was just pulling out another bunch of the "rare" tulips when Captain Whiffo entered Gray's store. He was a regular costumer there and didn't care if everybody knew it. Abe Gray was a member of the ETWC after all too. Captain Whiffo considered Sadie Gray to be a very Eslandian girl - and that was about the highest compliment anybody could want from him. "Hello, Captain!" said Sadie as he came in. "Captain Nordau was just here and he bought some of these Mondial tulips." "What?! Captain Nordau here?? And what did he want with the tulips?" "Well, he heard that Captain Cookie had just bought some too." "What, him too? Well, I guess it won't do to be left out. How much do they cost? Half a doubloon?" "What, no. Of course not - that's what Captain Cookie paid for them. They're going for four-fifths of a doubloon now." "What? What extravegance!" "Captain Nordau paid three-quarters of a doubloon for them," Sadie smiled. "You wouldn't want to do worse than him. And it's my last one. Extra proceeds for the ETWC, you know, Captain," and she held up the flowers in front of her pretty face. Captain Whiffo sighed. "Okay, give me them for four-fifths then." "A pleasure to see you again, Captain," said Sadie, taking the gold coins, which as Captain Whiffo thought - like a good Eslandolan - looked even better against an Eslandolan girl's pretty face. "Jackie, come show Captain Whiffo your little brother," said Sadie, calling over her little sister - "and stop snitching cookies or I really will take the next one out of your allowance." And Captain Whiffo left saying to himself, "why, how does she manage it? She always does me like this, I don't know how she does it." And he concluded as he had often concluded before, "someday I'm going to marry that girl." And as soon as he walked out the door Sadie said, "Jackie dear, bring out the Royal Blue now, will you please? And I'll pardon you that cookie." ---------------------------------------------- The story so far: Something for a Lady Buying Some Flowers Captain Cookies next move
  4. The Grandall’s were the owners of a wealthy trade company in Eslandola. The company had been passed down for generations, but throughout the years, as trade grew in the new world, the companies who refused to expand disappeared one after the other. Antonio Grandall had watched his father run their company into bankruptcy. When he finally took over, he gained the trust of enough investors to maintain the company alive and relocate to the city of Punto Sur. Since then he has become a strong competitor who, despite being at the head of one of the smallest Elsandolan Trade companies, is both respected and feared by his opponants. If there is one thing you can say about Antonio Grandall, there's very few things he won't do to achieve his goals... On the company's most recent voyage, a portion of the profits had not made it back to Ponto Sur. Something Grandall can't let his investors know, but not to worry, Antonio will get his money back. ---- Excuse the bad picture quality. I realise you barely see him on the picture but Antonio Grandall is the man sitting behind the desk, the man with the money poutch is an investor and the poor captive is a member of the crew who kept part of the profits.

    What is he doing here?

Pontelli. Busy market street. A client enters a shop. Dr. Thaum: Hello there. Fred the shopkeeper: Hello Dr. Thaum. An honour to see you here. What can I do for you? Dr. Thaum: Where is that bonehead Callaghan? I thought I'd seen him run into this very boutique. Fred the shopkeeper (looks under his desk): No, Sir, there's nobody in here but meself. Dr. Thaum: So what should I be buying here? A parrot? Fred: Sorry, we're right out of parrots. But I got a nice choice of cauldrons. Dr. Thaum (unimpressed): Hmmm. Fred: Or tulips. They are all the rage, Sir. Dr. Thaum: Tulippps? Those flowery-thingies? Fred: Precisely. Dr. Thaum: Well, how much for that red one over there? Fred: The "Ad Rem" will be half a dubloon. Dr. Thaum: Such much? Well, I'll have two then, still. Fred: They are in high demand. But rest assured, you made a good deal here. Maybe in a week or two you could sell them again for 2 dubloons. Dr. Thaum: If they don't wither until then. Well, thanks and bye. (leaves, shouting "Callaghan" while entering the street again). (next person enters) Fred: Hello,Sir. What can I do for you? Ismael Oldton: You're a shopkeeper? You're into money?`Well, old chap, I got a great new idea for coins! Fred (to himself): Oh dear, it is that strange guy from Corrington that everyone is talking about. Ismael Oldton: Let me quickly explain. It is really easy and forward-looking. The main coin you will have is pnence. Fred: A pnence? Ismael: Don't interrupt. Yes, a pnence. But there is more, of course. If you assemble 13 pnence, then you will get a shnilling. Fred: A shnilling? Ismael: Don't interrupt. With a shnilling, you will be very well off. But better, of course, with the next mighty coin: The shnilling-six-pnence. Fred: What will that buy? Ismael: Don't know. But much more than a pnence, that is for sure. Fred: Have you thought this through, Sir? Ismael: Of course, I am doing nothing else. This will be revolutionary!!! He he. Fred: I'm afraid Sir, but we're closing. Ismael: What? At four in the afternoon? Fred: Such are the rules here in Eslandolea. Ismael: Ok, ok, I will enlighten you further on another day. Till then fare thee well! (Leaves) Fred: (sighs and quickly locks the door behind Ismael). (to himself:) I sold quite a lot of those tulips today. I probably should secure my supply. Then I can make a fortune! Of dubloons, of course, not of pnences, schmences... 6. I present the brig Lucky Strike, seen here cutting quite a pace through the sea: Nothing profound in the ship construction, as I'm in the process of moving and am still unpacking my bricks. But I wanted to experiment with water effects in a micro, and this is what I came up with. Another view: All C&C welcome!
  7. A small factory (windmill) for the Eslandola town of Punto Sur: Punto Sur exhibits properties with a feel for the Classic Pirates era, so I chose the color scheme of white and red, with no tans or dark reds. Four years ago I built a micro windmill that was only 8 pieces (9 if you counted the base). Trying that minimalist approach again, this build uses 11 pieces, but could have used as few as 7 if I had used a one-piece base and hadn't added the technic pin at the hub of the sails (the pin just fills the hole and adds no structural element to the build). All C&C welcome!

    Captain Cookies next move

Commodore Spoon had been seen buying tulips for a lady. Apparently, this triggers Captain Cookie's next move: to visit the market in Pontelli. https://bricksafe.com/files/CaptainBraunsfeld/bobs-brethren-of-the-brick-seas/the-tulips-of-eslandola/Captn Cookie buys a tulip 1.jpg/800x460.jpg C. Cookie: Arrr, ahoi, hello there. Merchant: Yes, Sir? C. Cookie: I heard ya sellin' those flowery thingies. Merchant: Tulips, Sir. C. Cookie: An old enemy of mine has bought some one called "Ad Rem". Merchant: These sure exist, sir. They are red. Quite lovely. C. Cookie: Well, mate, I will need something better! Merchant: This could be your lucky day, Sir! C. Cookie: What? You tell me I'll find a buried treasure? Merchant: Well, sort of. Look here! C. Cookie: Where? Merchant: Here! C. Cookie: What's that thing called? Merchant: This tulip is known as "Orange Emperor". It is sure to make a grand impact. And it is of a different colour than the other tulip you mentioned. C. Cookie: Colours are important? Merchant: Just like ebony and ivory. C. Cookie: I thought they'd live together in perfect harmony? Merchant: Whatever you say, Sir. So how about the "Orange Emperor"? C. Cookie: Just what I need. How much? Merchant: That will be half a dubloon. C. Cookie: Such much? (He is obviously of German origin) Merchant: Certainly, Sir. C. Cookie: Ok, ok. I'll have it. Let me just eat my cookie so I have my hand free. Merchant: You will not regret this purchase. C. Cookie: That'd better be true. Or I'll return. And then I would not be in good mood. C. Cookie (off with the tulip) Merchant (sighs and counts his money) Monkey (leaves with banana) ------------------------------------------------- I'll probably license this for Pontelli. Also fun to use the turquoise underwater stuff. New appreciation for those, they're actually really cool. Thanks to those of you who are sticking with the Captain in his adventures. Shopkeeper: Precisely, Sir. Brickinson: I think she will like that blue flower-thing. Shopkeeper: The "Royal Blue" tulip, Sir. Brickinson: Alright. How much is it? Shopkeeper: That will be a fifth of a dubloon. Brickinson: Quite expensive - but ok. Talking about fractions of dubloons, have you met that guy from Corrington who is talking about a new system of coinage? Shopkeeper: Nope. Brickinson: Well, then, here's your money. Please stand up. One more question: Are your flowers genuine? Shopkeeper: Of course, Sir. Maybe other shops are just imitating, but my tulips are of the highest quality. Brickinson: Good. Have a nice day then! 11. Since the Eslandolans had first met the Ténotclaxcan society on the island of Berelli in 616 AE, they had fostered a great trading relationship with the native people. In the year following their meeting, residents of the town of Elysabethtown had constructed a Ténotclaxcan Goodwill Trade Garden near the town center to, as the name suggested, project their goodwill for their native neighbors. However, in recent years the condition of the garden had deteriorated. Two Eslandolan town guards mused between themselves, "Do you think we should be weeding this thing?" ----------------------------- OOC: Submitted as an Eslandola entry in the Faction Flavours Mini Challenge. Another fun one to build. I really love the angle / slope that sacks have, and they have a 3mm bar on the top for minifigs to grab! I figured that could make for some fun connections. Something for a Lady

Ahem. We have seen Commodore Spoon sailing lately https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/187094-commodore-t-spoon-is-sailing/ And now we find him in Pontelli indeed at the start of our story - talking to a merchant. Commodore Spoon: So, my dear friend Habakus, I have come to you on an important quest. Senior Merchant Habakus (member of the East Wind Trading Company): Yes, Commodore, how can I be of service? C. Spoon: Well. S.M. Habakus (m.o.t.EWTC): Well, well. C.S.: Let's sit down, won't we. S.M.H. (EWTC): How forgetful of me, please have a seat. C.S.: Yes, this is better. H.: Sugar muffin? S.: Oh, sure. Thanks. H.: That is half a dubloon then. S. (blushes): Right, forgot you were on business. Then I should stick to my diet. H.: So you come into my house on the day of my daughter's birthday and want some help? S.: Yepp. Let's be frank. H.: But you are Commodore Spoon, not Frank. S.: Right. Where was I? I have made the acquaintance of a lovely lady and I would like to bring her an exquisite gift. H.: Now we are talking. What about a pearl-gold dragon sword hilt? S.: For a lady??? H.: Right. A broomstick? S.: For a lady??? Look, Habakus. H. (confused): Where? S.: I want to give her a present that is unprecedented (but well presented). H. (smiling brightly): Then, my old friend, I have something for you, which is really special. This tulip. S.: The red and green thingy here on the table? H.: Precisely. It is actually a quite rare flower. And beautiful too. I am sure she will like it. S.: Ok, I'm in. How much is the tulip? H.: The "Ad Rem" is just a tenth of a dubloon. By the way, did you see that guy from Corrington who is trying to introduce a now system of coinage? S.: No, not yet. Sounds funny though. Ok, I will take the "Ad Rem" And this is how the whole thing started. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just realized that this build would actually work for the mini-challenge... Though famous mostly for her ability to faint on the slightest provocation, she was quite competent as a navigator--at least, she knew all that the books said. Of course she hadn’t much practical experience. Did that deter her? Not her! Disguised as a pirate, she prepared to do a little scouring of the seas on her own account. To be continued... This is a wave technique I've wanted to try for a while now, it's pretty fun! The boat design is new too, though of course it borrows from the sideways designs of some of my microscale ships. When she came to she went and climbed a tree, since that was a place where no one would look for her and she could decide on a course of action without fear of interruption. To be continued... All right, needless to say I didn't build this whole scene just so Lady Cora could meditate in a tree... It was part of a Summer Joust collaboration. But, there were lots of trees and this was my plan for the next "vignette" anyway. I regret how little of the roof you can see in the main pictures. There's a lot of intricate stuff going on to get those As! This kind of waterwheel scene has been on my to-build list for quite a while, and it turned out very close to how I was envisioning it. There are a whole ton of leaves in this scene and the layout is a little funny in order to get that bend in the river--there are some behind the scenes shots on my blog. I also tried out a new (I think?) technique for the tree trunks. I wanted to get the effect of knots with those round upside down donut tiles. I think it did a fairly good job of breaking up the square trunk, but I'd be glad to hear second opinions on that! The next chapter will go back to the vignettes to show what it is that Lady Cora decided to do... C&C welcome!

    Commodore T Spoon is sailing

You remember Commodore T Spoon? Introduced here: https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/187046-introducing-commodore-spoon/ Guess what, he also has a ship! ... and is sailing away ... ... probably to Pontelli. ,,, and he is singing a song: "I am sailing, I am sailing..." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I always wanted to build a ship on the basis of one of those larger standard boat hulls - and here it is! And don't ask about monkeys. They may be somewhere, but not yet. Stay healthy and safe!

    Deer Cove Falls

Deep in the forests of Torrach Bonn, on the Grand Teraxladl river lies a magnificent waterfall often haunted by deer to bask in the moonlight and enjoy the refreshing water. Those few explorers from Puerto Alijo who have ventured this far into the interior and have had the good fortune to stumble across this hidden cascade have often been heard to dream of building a cabin on its edge... Hey y'all! It's been a while since I've last built something for BoBS but I hope to have more coming your way soon! And to tide us over for now here's a nature scene I built for the Summer Joust and LEGO Ideas puzzle contest which I thought I'd share with you all as well! And I've made it to the voting phase on Ideas now as well and there are a couple of days of voting left, so I'd love all the votes y'all would like to throw my way! (Shameless self-plugging here ) Hope you all enjoy it, and C&C are welcome as always! ~Garm

    Introducing Commodore Spoon

Lo and behold! I am proud to present a new character that is going to be part of a story to come: Commodore T. Spoon Here is his island home off Pontelli: And here is the man himself: One comment from a good ol' sea rat has already reached us: Captain Cookie was heard saying "I hate him! He is my arch-enemy!" We will see how this is going to turn out in the end. Until then - stay healthy and safe!

In his honor, royalist Eslandians (all four of them) gathered in the capital to burn the Corry flag and wave nightcaps (the official symbol of King Fernando). So this was mostly a fun excuse to use that wild red plume and to show off my nightcaps. I couldn't find a happy medium between building a whole town square and this, so after letting it gather a few weeks of dust I took pictures of it. The next vignette will make up for it. Thanks for looking, hope you're enjoying the Captain's continued adventures...

Okay, so I obviously was having way too much fun with these "reaction" builds. I enjoyed trying a new floor pattern out. My limited quantity of gold grill tiles made the footprint of this vignette fairly small, but I still was ambitious enough to get an all LEGO shot out of it. I'm making up for burning the Corry flag a couple builds ago by having a micro version on the wall here. I hope you're still enjoying the Captain's story, it is drawing gradually to a close, I promise. C&C welcome!
  21. A surprising port extension Since the Terraversa troubles, the Shipyards in Elysabethtown had to fullfill a huge amount of commands. One of them being the confection of the Frigate The Applecid for Felipe de la Manzana in a record time ! It was necessary to extend the port but the shores are mainly unexplored and some sort of huge palm trees are growing in the area. Felipe decided to take advantage of suche trees... He ordered to convert an old smuggler cache situated in one of those trees into a thriving warehouse. A great place to protect fragile goods in the tree shanties. And a good spot to thread ropes and to prepare rigging and sails for the incoming vessels. Some artisans quickly regrouped around this surprising port extension to make it live. Now ropes and sails are ready to be sent to their ships. The development of Elysabethtown Felipe wanted is well engaged now ! Here is a fun build I have prepared for some time now. I will license it as a Large Artisan for Elysabethtown. I really enjoyed to transform the original tree into a huge palm tree full of life !
  22. Chapter IChapter IIChapter IIIChapter IVChapter V Chapter VI Chapter VII Chapter VIII Chapter IX Chapter X Chapter XI Chapter XII Chapter XIII Chapter XIV Chapter XVChapter XVI Chapter XVII Chapter XVIII (you are here) Chapter XIV King Fernando’s expression of sorrow at the news of Commodore Argentum’s tragic passing was particularly touching. “Never more!” he sobbed, “never more shall I find so true a friend, so sincere a sympathizer in my sorrows, or one who so consistently replenished my supply of nightcaps!” So, this is kind of what I was trying to do with that terribly lame Chapter XVI, in terms of using the black flower pieces. A bed turned out much nicer than a rug, and I was able to use a couple of spares for the king's pillow and night table cloth. The pillars were also fun to work out, I really like the design but unfortunately, even with the help of my two brothers, four of those dark grey sloping things was all I was able to pull together. So I probably won't get to use the design in a larger scene anytime soon! Another thing that was fun was the micro version of Captain Argentum. C&C welcome!
  23. Welcome to the East Trade Wind Company's Discussion Topic! Here’s where members sign up, organize transactions, vote on expenditures, and more. There will be certain strategic discussions that are kept private, but if you have any questions about the ETWC or the relative parts of the EGS, feel free to ask below! What is the ETWC? Almost since the beginning of its charter, the ETWC has been the most powerful trading company of Eslandola. It controls almost all the major Eslandolan Old World ports and Sir E.T. Wilkinson de Chauncourtois, the head of the company, saw to it that most of the High Council seats were filled with board members. Only recently has the company begun to make a more vigorous move toward strengthening colonization and trading in the New World, but once it has started there isn't much that would want to stand in its way! Why should I join the ETWC? You should join the East Trade Wind Company because it is the richest, biggest, and best company around! Plus, E. T. Wilkinson de Chauncourtois who leads it is just the right person to lead a company, and not some hot-headed young Guy. We also already ply the seas of the world's oceans and own most of Eslandola's old world. Lastly, we're simply the best! Furthermore, the ETWC has monopolies of wheat and oat plantations and on copper mines These monopolies translate into in-game economic benefits. The ETWC can provide protection to your property and open the way if you want to land a position as mayor or civil servant, or even a member of Eslandola’s High Council, if you show that kind of commitment! Plus, the ETWC provides a great setting for you to engage in the Monthly Commerce and Raiding Action along with like-minded Eslandian traders.
