  1. Hello All, Here is my entry to GoH Challenge 2: Category A - Team Simon. Unfortunately, due to the contest ending tonight, I have not finished the story yet, but am working on it. I will probably edit it tomorrow with the full story, but meanwhile here is a quick summary: Feren and his men were traveling to help his friend Simon get rid of the Drow from his lands. During one of their rest stops, Feren sent out his elite Rangers to scout ahead. When one of them didn't return, he and his lead archer/friend went out to search for him, knowing the general direction the missing Ranger took. Due to Feren's inhuman hearing ability, he heard whispering, and following it found this supposedly ruined castle, that was almost rebuilt. He and his friend sneaked up to the wall (Feren started climbing up), and heard the Ranger betraying their company to the Drow, and where they will be in a week. That is what this build is about, I was going to continue the story in my 2 other entries, but (due to the time limit again, and life) I was unable to build them. So here is the summary of what was going to happen. Build 2 Category B: When the Ranger came back, they grabbed him, put him in chains, and brought him to Feren. However, he explained that he was actually leading the Drow into a trap. He told the Drow Leader the fastest way to intercept Feren's company, which happened to lead the Drow's army through a narrow rocky valley between 2 cliffs, the perfect ambush spot. Build 3 Category C: Feren led his men to the cliffs and split them, putting half his men on both sides. They spent the next couple days preparing for this ambush (gathering rocks, traps, etc). When the Drow arrived, the attack would begin (Which is what the MOC would have been about, the full scale attack/ambush). That is the full story summary for what I "was" going to do for this Challenge, but didn't have time to build them all. For the Glory of Avalonia, and Go Team Simon! Thanks for viewing! Soli Deo Gloria! ~Matthew Oh~
  2. My dearest Cassius, We are still in the tower. Since the first night, when the black ship was spotted, we haven't been attacked, but many of our men are dead or dying. I believe it is because they handled the dead orcs. I warned them to burn them, but they threw them into the water instead. Now, the pestilence is creeping through even my own body. I am old, Cassius. You know that. I have been old for a long time, since you were a child. I can feel that it is almost my time to go through that great door we call death. Do not grieve for me, for where I am going, I shall never be old again. These shall most likely be my final words to you, words so precious I shudder to think of entrusting them to the care of this bird. Do not fear. No matter what happens, be brave. If Avalonia falls, so be it. Everything is being orchestrated for a reason, Cassius. Do not fear. Farewell, Alfred ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quite frankly, I love everything about this build. The photography sucks (I don't have access to my normal camera), but I think it might be one of my best builds so far. I originally planned for this to be a mountain top, but when I placed it on a blue baseplate to make sure it fit the limit, it just screamed island. So I ordered up some trans black bricks, (greatly underestimating how many), and made up some water. This is supposed to be a ruined tower build on an islet in the Mystic Isles that has recently been repaired. I'd also like to claim the following credits: Still water Wall technique #1 Window Frames C&c welcome, as always!
  3. My dearest Lady Vansier, Further to your request about Feathered Dragons, I have compiled a brief report for you. I trust you have found it attached to this damned undead Carrier pigeon. Feathered Dragons come in all shapes, sizes, and indeed degree of feathering. It is a point of contention amongst the Learned Zoology Professors at Petrea University as to whether each is a distinct species, or merely an individual of a larger species. It is, point of fact, rare to find a specimen, that is willing to be studied. Shorter of temper than a Mitgardian Bearded Lady with untamable armpit hair, the feathered dragons are known to attack anything within sight. One such dragon, more specifically, a member of the Rakath Feathered Dragon sub-species is owned by the esteemed Lord Vladivus of Nocturnus, and I had the pleasure of studying it first hand, whilst a painter produced it's likeness, which I believe should be attached to this carrier pigeon as well. Note that most of the body is covered in green scales, whilst it is the black wings that are feathered. This one was tamed by Vladivus himself, and it's rumoured that he wrestled it one on one into submission. Fearsome chap this Vladivus. Anyway, this specimen does not breathe fire, but excretes venom through it's teeth, thereby giving it's bite a rather lethal efffect. Yours, as ever, A half-crazed Special Envoy of the Head Professor of Zoology at the University of Petrea to Nocturnus, Dizak Khan. P.s. The indomitable Lord Vladivus insisted we send you a portrait of himself stood by the dragon, because, well, he's heard of your beauty. Here he is, in all his armoured half-undeadness. My sincerest apologies. So, my entry for the "Mount Up!" Challenge, my first attempt at a brick built creature. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be- learnt a few things. C+C welcome!
  4. Near the ruins of Alfderon Manor, an Elf meets a forestman in the employ of Lord Simon, with valuable information about Drow movements. They are furtive, and concealed in a corner of the ruins. Elf: "Make sure this message reaches Lord Simon. It is... ...Most disturbing." Forestman: "I will never yer fear. I ain't gonna hang around anyway, them Drows is everywheres." With that, the Forestman disappeared off in the direction of Nalderic, My entry for Cat. A. C+C welcome.
  5. Aiding the Refugees Peter and his aunt Marian have been stopped by a blockade, put in place to hinder the spread of the plague. As Peter is still weak after his sickness, the Avalonian soldiers refuse to let them through afraid that he is ill with the plague. A Kaliphlin merchant helps them to persuade the soldiers so they can continue on their journey. It's a wonder what some Kaliphlin gold can do to make things go smoother in Avalonia. This is my Challenge II, category A entry for Team de Gothia. Previous entries in the same story: A Black Day House of Healing

    Freebuild: Plain raid

Plains ambush by lorddan413, on Flickr Lord Dan and his company of men are traveling through a vast plain, miles and miles of low grass, the only variance is turfs of grass here and there. Several days have passed since they first set out and they are making good progress. Lord Dan: Will! My horse is getting restless, I'm going to loop back behind the wagon and ride around for a little while. I'll be back there if you need me. General Will: ( to himself: sure, it's the horse that's restless) Ok, but make sure you don't get too far back. This grass all looks the same. A few minutes later... The Sir Robert and General Will are idlely chatting Sir Robert: So what do you think it will be like? General Will: I'm not sure, from the vauge description on the map it seems to be like most of Avalonia, with plenty of forested areas, lushious grasslands, you know, a typical forest getaway. But I did notice a small mention of a few hills, so there could also be some nice rocky areas. More idle converstation, but then General Will notices movement in the grass. General Will: (In a low voice) Don't look now, but I think there's men hidden in the grass. They're dressed in the same green as the grass, I wouldn't have even noticed them if they hadn't moved. Sir Robert casually looks across the plain, as if admiring the endless grasslands. Sir Robert: (whispering) I saw one, over on the left. General Will: (quietly) Theres another behind you.(loudly) Ok, I've had enough of your silly tales. There's no way a vampire is a duke, here in Avalonia. Robert, why don't you go check the reigns on the right horse over there. They look a little tight and we don't want him getting sore. Sir Robert: Sure thing, I've got him( winking at Will) General Will: I' ll check the right one Will climbs down and " checks" on his horse Will: ( softly, so only Robert can hear) 1,2,3 At three they both spin around and attack the two very surprised bandits that were creeping up behind them. At the back of the wagon a third bandit runs out of the grass, tosses a rope onto the deck and climbs on. Bandit: kkiiillllllll ttthheeemmmm!!! Archer: What the..?! The archer pulls out his knife and blocks the sword blow aimed right for him. Behind the wagon Lord Dan sees the commotion and charges forward with his sword out, ready for battle. Plains raid 2 by lorddan413, on Flickr Plains Raid 3 by lorddan413, on Flickr Plains raid 4 by lorddan413, on Flickr Plains raid 5 by lorddan413, on Flickr This isn't really a build, just a quick landscape and a way to show them progressively moving across avalonia. I did, however, enjoy having my soldiers get their first taste of battle.
  7. Loading the wagon by lorddan413, on Flickr Lord Dan and his trusted team of knights load up their wagon in preparation for a long, and potentially dangerous journey across Avalonia. They are headed to Legoawyr, the territory claimed by Lord Dan, which is still unexplored and has no known inhabitants, save for a few tiny communities along its edges. Since venturing into unknown territory is a tedious undertaking, the group must be well supplied, bringing along essentials such a food, weapons, tools to start building a settlement, a small fraction of Lord Dan's gold( you never know when a small bribe might be useful) and other gear. The wagon itself, while not the most elegant wagon ever, is very practical. Build of wood and reinforced with metal, the wagon is a small mobile fortress, and will be the group's base as they travel the countryside. It has a useful boarding ramp which can be raised while moving or during an attack, deck space to carry supplies, mounted crossbows for protection, axes conveniently located on the sides to quickly clear obstructions ( or enemies), spears positioned to block the back ramp or to be rotated facing outward when encamped or when under attack, and an inclosed room for storage or shelter. It incorporates the Avalonian colors of dark green and a tiny bit of sand green. Unfortunately, this large and well armored wagon is very heavy and it requires at least two horses to pull it and frequent stops for the exhausted horses. loading the wagon 2 by lorddan413, on Flickr loading the wagon 4 by lorddan413, on Flickr wagon 1 by lorddan413, on Flickr wagon 2 by lorddan413, on Flickr wagon 3 by lorddan413, on Flickr Additional photos are on my flickr
  8. The possibility of a plague is something Avalonia cannot afford, and one of the first measures taken was to set up road blocks at regular intervals to prevent scared villagers (scared of the plague or the drow, or both) from making matters worse. The roadblock at the ruined tower of Ker Tazal, near Calder, is not the most impressive. In fact, it could be said it is one of the worst, a simple ladder blocks the path. But it works. The soldiers do as they are told and question travellers, wear protective cloth that covers their mouth and nose, and also keep an eye out for drow. Anders and Paul, on duty today, have had a rather quiet morning with few travelers. Right now they have just stopped a man and a young girl, travelling with a dog. It does not look like they will be much trouble. He says his name is Arthur and they come from Brevis. They seem look honest folk, and healthy, even if a bit weary of a few days in the road, but orders are orders: they will have to wait here for a patrol and be taken to Calder.
  9. Entry for Challenge II, Category A, Team Simon. Reports from our spies tells about how the Drows has infiltrated our lands by the use of underground tunnels. The enemy can arise at any place and fall in our back. We need to locate the tunnel entrances and exist to stop this invasion! Scouts has been sent out to discover where the tunnels are ending. /Etzel
  10. My lord Simon, After our fortification efforts I decided to see what information I could gather about the leaders of the enemy force. One of my men spotted a drow scout, and I followed him. Soon I found a few of the enemy at a small camp in the ruins of a tower. There were three drow, one of which wore a mask, a Hand warrior, and a raven. They seemed to be arguing about their leadership. The Hand soldier didn't think a drow should be leading them. I overheard them talking about their leader being back at "the Keep". I will investigate. Regards, Sir Jamus Sir Jamus. Whole build. I tried to make the landscaping similar to the landscaping in my other build set in Avalonia. Figless! I love mushrooms... Campfire! Wall detailing! Well, that's my Category A entry! Hope you like it! . More pictures here: http://upload.bricks...ry.cgi?f=544257
  11. I've been down here for thirty seven days. Thirty seven. Do you have any idea how long that is, thirty seven days beneath the earth? Thirty seven days with only the occasional pale, wavering torch? Thirty seven days without seeing anything else alive, except for the drow and their wretched prisoners? Thirty seven days ago, when I set out into that cave, freshly disguised and eager to find this man, whoever he may be, I had no idea how long it would take. Now, I've been down here for over a month, and I still have no clue where he might be. For all I know, the way these tunnels wind around, I could be right above him, mere feet, and I'd never know. I hear someone coming. I must go. Our hero! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Whew, here's another build in a long tradition of posting at the last minute! Also, I'd like to apologize for the crappy pictures. My normal camera was unavailable. This was one of those build that you make, forget about, find, realize the deadline is a few days away, and scramble to get done. Thanks for reading, c&c welcome! More pics on flickr:
  12. Sir Jamus, I do not have time for explanation, but I need to meet you presently. Come armed for battle, and meet me at Kingridge catle at sunrise! Simon The sun rose drearily, seeming to be as weary as the land of Avalonia. The drow assault and the rumors of a plague have taken a toll on the grassy guild, as well as her once proud lords, now worn far and thin as they try to protect their homeland. Now the first light of that darkened sun hit the walls of Kingridge castle, and Sir Jamus the brave strode into the gate at a quick pace. As he wandered the keep he was pulled aside by a hooded warrior. Jamus: Simon, is that you, milord? The man replied, alarmed. Simon: Tis I, but we must not let the others know I'm here! I have come in secret, and must be back to the front lines soon! Jamus: Yes, milord. Why have you summoned me? Simon: I need you to lead a strike against the Drow leaders, a task I wished to do myself, but with so many lords trying to suppress the plague I do not have enough warriors. Here, you will need this! Jamus stared in wonder as Simon handed him an elaborate dagger, clearly of elvish make. Simon: This will help you defeat the Drow commander, keep it with you always! Good luck my friend! With that the Avalonia lord turned and walked away, leaving Jamus alone. Jamus: A dagger against a horde of drow, wonderful. Then Jamus noticed a note inscribed on the blade. Jamus: Aha! A map... He then sheathed the dagger and walked off, a look of determination on his face... Two days later... Hand Soldier: I hate being stationed here! We never get to see any action! Drow: You fool, we protect this tunnel entrance! We cannot let anyone past us! Hand Soldier: Ha, ha, like any of those weak Avalonians would think of coming here! They're all so wrapped up in protecting their precious crops! They're weak and stupid, and you're a mindless soldier, my drow friend! Drow: And you're a- wait? Did you hear that? Hand Soldier: Hear what? There's nothing but plants and animals for miles around- He was cut off by a battle cry as a group of knights jumped from their hiding places, and charged the tunnel entrance! Drow: Quickly, draw your weapons! Alert the others! They had no chance to alert anyone, the Avalonians had then surrounded in seconds. Most of the defenders didn't even have weapons with them... Jamus: Quickly, take the doors! This tunnel will lead us right to the cobra's head! To be continued... Well there's my last entry, I meant to have a third build, but I lacked motivation and time. Maybe I'll get around to it soon. . Figless shots! I tried to keep the dark tan and olive theme for all my entries. I'm really proud of the second build, it's pretty big (about 35x35 probably), and I love how the rockwork turned out. Thanks for looking!
  13. Dunholt Tower. Recently reoccupied in the face of the Drow invasion, it is acting as a staging post for the defenders of Avalonia. Elves and humans guard the tower, taking up arms alongside one another against the Drow. Wooden stakes, heading to Nalderic to be used in palisade fortifications. A knight surveys the land from the tower's top. An Elven warrior patrols the area. Lords of Avalonia meet to discuss the offensives coming. My entry for Cat B, team Simon. C+c welcome. I apologise for the quality of the photos- if I get time, I'll replace them. I got sand in the finer workings of my camera, so it's a bit hit and miss and I'm still learning the ins and outs of photo editing software.
  14. My Lord Simon, I write to inform you that our efforts are going smoothly! Our efforts have been met with much success, and we have managed to build dozens of fortifications throughout Avalonia. Our armies will now have many spots to fall back to if we are overwhelmed. The owners of the lands we are building on have been extremely cooperative and helpful. They are willing to give up parts of their land, glad for the protection of our troops. I am now leaving a house where we have built a palisade wall. The inhabitants of the house, a man, elf, and their son, have been very gracious to us. They provided food, help, and entertainment in the form of elvish singing to my men, and wished us the best of luck. I recommend we reward their good spirits after the drow are defeated. Regards, Sir Jamus. The peasants. Sir Jamus (in the front) and the palisade. Spears! No figs! I love the landscaping and path! No palisade! I really like the house. I built a house because I realized I haven't ever really built a proper house. So I decided to build a scene showing a fortification effort around a house. I figured small fortifications like this would be popping up all over Avalonia, so my idea would fit in. Well, that's my entry! Good luck everyone! Edit: Brickshelf gallery's public: http://upload.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=543911
  15. Searching for a Cure When Lasvor heard about the plague in Avalonia, he rushed into a town near the Mitgardian border. I physician friend of his lives there, who let Lasvor into his lab to help finding a cure for this terrible sickness. He's been working for weeks, doing countless experiments using blood and other body fluids from the patients. There are still many combination of herbs and other ingredients he hasn't tried yet, so maybe the liquid that is going to be condensed into the bottle will be the one...
  16. Treating the Sick The Black Brothers are devoted to caring for the sick, and are among the finest healers in Historica. At their convent close to Barqa, the city council of Barqa has allowed them to take care of some of the victims of the Plague in Avalonia. No one promised that being treated would be pleasant Despite the Black Brothers being masters of healing, not everyone can be saved... There are still plenty of pharmaceutical supplies. Caring for the sick is hard work. This is my Challenge II, category B entry for Team de Gothia. I'd like to claim UoP credit for Interior Design [General Building].

    Unrest in Varlyrio

Citizens supporting the Varlyrian mercenaries fighting with the Black Spire have barricaded a city block in Illyria, the capital of Varlyrio. The Garra (guard of Illyria) have been dispatched to deal with the troublemakers, but it seems to turn into a bloody affair. Something seems wrong with the rebel leader as well...
  18. Here's my entry for the Warship GNAR category, the Serpent's Pride! An ever-proud Mitgardian ship, equipped with crossbows and a crew of strong Mitgardias, including sir Infernum himself! The captain! Shields and crossbows. Front (prow?) view! Turn this turntable and... The anchors are lowered! Another full view. And finally a view of the water! Ifernum's Comments: Finally got this up! Almost forgot, good thing it was cloudy out today! I love how this turned out, especially the sails (the masts are movable), the deck, hull, and play-function anchors. This is the first MOC I decided to keep together, and it's been sitting on a shelf in my room for the last month. Sadly, it was dropped and smashed on the way back to the shelf after I took these pics. May it rest in pieces. Thanks for looking!
  19. Field Piece - Barqan Fire Wagon While the black oil of Kaliphlin are widely used for such peaceful tasks as lighting and heating, a more fearsome use is what is widely known as Barqan Fire (similar to historical Greek Fire). This is a kind of refined naphtha which has excellent properties for being pumped out of a nozzle, yet tends to stick to where it is poured. Barqan Fire is often used by Kaliphlin naval vessels to ignite enemy vessels. Not as common but sometimes seen are field artillery pieces (essentially shipboard weapons put on wagons) capable of spewing the Barqan Fire on the enemy. Not very easy to maneuver on the battlefield, but when positioned correctly these weapons can wreak havoc on tightly packed ranks of enemies. Operating these weapons is highly dangerous, so these wagons are always only manned by volunteers. Always. This weapon may be fielded by either side. Suggestion for game rules applying to the fire wagon (the numbers can of course be changed at will for balance purposes): Range somewhere between (30-50 studs) depending on how many soldiers are pumping (2 soldiers = 30 studs, 4 soldiers = 40 studs, 6 soldiers = 50 studs) Fire in the area hit by the stream will burn for a while and has a high probability of igniting other combustible materials. A soldier hit by the stream will burst into flames (I leave it to the game masters to decide damage effects and mechanics) Enough fuel for 10 long bursts (can be divided into more short bursts). Needs a soldier with a pilot torch lighting the stream of oil (no built-in pilot light). Needs a soldier directing the fire stream (can be the same as for rule 5) Minimum crew 3 soldiers: Two pumping, one directing the fire/lighting the fire stream (see rules 1, 5 and 6). There is a 5 % probability of the igniting soldier getting sprayed by the naphtha and burst into flames himself (effects according to rule 3). Probability increased to 20 % if the igniting soldier is also responsible of directing the flow of the fire. The naphtha will spill if the wagon is by a large projectile (not just an arrow) strong enough to break a barrel or directly hit by a weapon (the stronger the weapon and wielder, the higher the probability of breaking a barrel). The size of the spill will be determined by the damage by the projectile and the amount of fuel left. Each time the wagon fires (regardless of length of the burst), there is a 10 % chance of a small spill in a random direction from a leak somewhere in the pump system. See rule 11 if that spill is connected to fire. If the pilot torch or some other source of fire is within the spill area (or comes within the spill area before the vehicle can be moved away), the whole vehicle will burst into an explosive fire killing anyone within 16 studs radius and randomly torching everyone in the area outside those 16 studs for another 16 studs with falling probability up to zero at 32 studs radius. If hit by a fire projectile, explosion is immediate if that projectile is also strong enough to cause a spill regardless of the fire. If it is a weak fire projectile (like an arrow) the crew has a 50 % chance of extinguishing the fire caused by the projectile before the wagon explodes (provided there is no previous spill) Notes on the LDD build: In real bricks, the fire would be best to build with flame pieces connected with the small pegs (not a LDD legal technique it seems however) The round bricks of the directing hose may be put on a rigid 3 mm hose to give some ability to direct the fire stream. Any parts of the wooden carriage may be replaced with other parts in reddish brown/black colors to match available pieces. One or two horses may be connected at the back of the wagon to pull it longer distances. (the LDD horses without any printing were too ugly to use). Otherwise it is pulled by the soldiers manning it. I had planned putting a Barqan fire thrower on a GNAR ship, but I won’t have time to build a ship for GNAR so it ended up being a field artillery piece instead. fire wagon.lxf
  20. With the information gleaned from the would be Zugal Assassin, Vladivus is able to launch an assault on Strangeholt Tower, a stronghold of the Black Spire. Encamped before the walls is a force of Black Falcons, and defending the tower itself are many strange, warped warriors, werewolves, vulture-people, and other more miscellaneous things. Lord Vladivus is resplendent in his armour, and astride a mighty barded warhorse, he strikes at the mightiest knights the Black Falcons can throw at him. Around him, the Shadowmere Guard and the Knights of the Inner Keep fight with implacable, zombie resolve, whilst Krell, the Necromancer, keeps raising them up to fight again. General Fenrir Bloodcloak, closest ally of Vladivus joins the fight on his horse, leading his werewolf warriors against the Falcons. He bears the red and gold standard of Nocturnus, and it flutters defiantly in the breeze. Fenrir's growls are audible even above the din of battle, such is his anger. Lurking inside, Zurias, the Raven emissary of Ravaage relishes the coming fight. He prepares to meet Vladivus in battle, to end Nocturnian resitance once and for all. Phase 3 Warlords build- tried out a new technique for the walls. I imagine this to just be a small buttress of the tower, ive not got enough bricks for a giant one sadly. Also wanted to try a swamp surrounded by land, which I hadn't done previously. I'm quite pleased with my falcons- I wanted a more modern version of them. Threw in parts from one of the new Chima vultures on the tower defenders- the torso and legs are great, not sure on the head though! C+C welcome!

    Opening the Gates

Many Avalonian towns have fallen to the Drow or forces loyal to them. Here, a town held by Drow loyalists is under siege by Kaliphlin troops. The Drow have secured vast supplies of food (including live animals and forage of them) to be able to withstand the siege until reinforcements arrive. The town is however about to be stormed in the middle of the night when a small force sneaks in through the sewers to overwhelm the guards at the gate. (You have to imagine that this is seen in faint moonlight ) Meanwhile, a force of soldiers from Barqa have sneaked up to the wall under the cover of darkness and are nervously waiting if they will remain undiscovered by the guards on the wall until the gate opens... University of Petraea credits claimed: Military Science: Siege Architecture: Half-timbered Tudor style Architecture: Roof rakes Agriculture and Zoology: Raising livestock (I noticed too late that the minifig posing turned out slightly less good on the Kaliphlin version of this last picture, click the picture to see the original version where I think the officer looked better) I made these builds for LoR (one max 8x8 vig and one unrestricted build), but now I've taken some additional pictures without the Loreesi colors and swapped the arms of the officer so that the builds should fit well as freebuilds in the GoH context. (I thought that an explanation was in order if someone is puzzled by not getting to the exact same pictures when clicking the Flickr links as I didn't want do dilute my photostream with too many duplicate pictures of essentially the same build ).
  22. Shadowmere, citadel of the mighty Lord Vladivus is a dangerous place, even to the initiated. It is not a place to visit unless you have permission from the Council of Shadowmere itself. The zombified Shadowmere Guard are a familiar sight, but less so, the Knights of the Inner Keep, heavily armed and armoured zombie soldiers tasked with guarding the nobility of Shadowmere. The oppressive open squares are watched over by statues of warriors long since dead, these golems awaiting simply an enemy assault on the citadel to spring back into action and crush their opponents under their mighty stone bulk. The narrow winding alleyways are a haunt of the criminal underworld, and even the zombie guards, unkillable though they are, avoid this area, some primal instinct of fear permeating their rotting brains from their former lives. Despite this, market stalls spring up wherever there is space, and a vibrant trade in various usually illicit goods attracts all kinds of Nocturnians, from humans and orcs to swamp people and ghosts, and all manner of life and unlife inbetween. Today, however, Lord Vladivus and his Shadowmere Guard chase a fugitive would-be assassin through the streets and squares. Despite his position as the Master of Shadowmere, and his standing as a mighty Warlord of Nocturnus, Vladivus has never forgotten the value of getting your own hands dirty- a rallying cry to the denizens of his citadel; "Though we may be oppressed and the Spire aims to conquer, I, Vladivus, shall fight for Nocturnus' freedom!" The grinning visage of Lord Vladivus on the chase. Not something you wish to encounter, for his armour is strong, and his blade keen, and a barely satiable thirst for blood lurks just below the surface. Rumours abound of vast lakes of boiling blood beneath Shadowmere, taken from defeated opponents. Certainly it is true that his many zombie servants have nary a trace of blood in their crumbling, rotting bodies. Lo, the assassin, a raven warrior of the Zugal Tribe no less, strikes at Vladivus, though his blade is no match for the Lord of Shadowmere. A wealth of secrets this creature may have. In utter disregard for the events around them, so common are they, other citIizens of Nocturnus go about their daily business. A Dragon Master, exile of Avalonia heads to a street vendor to look for lapping powder for his armour. The green skin, and wide, staring eyes belie this creature as a member of the Swamp People, despite his more normal dress. He sells many items, utilising the resources of his Moruth Swamp homelands. This particular square is a favourite haunt of Scarecroicus, the local drunkard. A strange creature, he is rumoured to have had many fantastical adventures in his youth, and he will tell questing adventurers of a path the colour of the midday sun, a walking suit of armour, a cowardly lion, and a girl with a blue dress, red shoes, and a small black dog. My Phase 2 Warlords build- obviously not the full 32x32 but I liked this idea. My Phase 3 was originally my Phase 2 but I bought a bunch of tiles and this kinda evolved out of it. C+C welcome!
  23. Garidas was born in one of the poorest districts of Barqa. While he has his fair share of thievery in his background, his dream has always been to one day join the ranks of the Barqan city guard. This force acts both as the constabulary of Barqa and as a standing army fiercely loyal to its city council. As many other Kaliphlin soldiers, they are recognized by the characteristic spiked helmets. Their uniform is also similar to that of many other official forces in Kaliphlin. The plume is awarded after a guard's first full period of duty, and the blue arms of the senior guardsmen mark them as first-class soldiers which the new recruits and junior guards still have a lot to prove before they earn. While not always the weapon they carry in everyday duty, the gladius is the traditional weapon of the Barqan soldiers and the symbol of their duty. A guardsman will keep his gladius in a spotless condition, and it is a great shame to lose this weapon. This day, Garidas’ dream has come true. Along with a few other young men, he is receiving his gladius and helmet from the commanding officer of the North-Western Sector Guards at this force’s barracks in the heart of the sector. Little do these proud young men know what their duty will have them facing in the Kaliphlin civil war looming on the horizon... If in this very moment Garidas would have had his fortune read, the deck would have shown the following cards: The Cat: For growing up in the back alleys of the city and learning to catch rats at an early age to help feed the family The Emperor (or perhaps Kaligem): Signifying his service to the city and the realm The Sandstorm (or perhaps even Death): For the horrors in store in the Kaliphlin civil war... Some spectators have been allowed into the barracks, and are watching the ceremony from the roof of the armory. I also claim UPDH credits for the following subjects: Military Science: Military camp (barracks in this case) Anthropology: Life in Kaliphlin Architecture: Advanced windows and window frames (for the half-stud offset window frames with curved top and SNOT details and for the flower boxes below the upper level windows) Architecture: Roofing (flat Kaliphlin style tiled roof)
  24. Baladil Plantation, Hacienda I'd like to claim a UoP credit for: Anthropology: Life in Kaliphlin 005 by scaevola11, on Flickr Due to current developments in the Quatarian civil war, Imperator Baladil of the Urgaul Pact called for a council of war with Haladin, his Archduke of Greater Quataria, at his luxurious plantation near the town of Urgaul. Baladil: With the assassination of the Chancellor at Anemaquar, the Principality is in shambles. A swift, upward thrust at their forces in Quataria City would force them to sue for peace Haladin: Wherefore our armies are currently occupied in harassing the border governates, it seems it would be prudent to regroup before we strike, perhaps at Ramon Baladil: Our element of surprise is more important than a few more centuries (a Roman word for a group of 100 troops; is the root of the English word). Few forces will be concentrated in the metropolis since we have been prosecuting our campaign on the border townships. Therefore, the ramshackle shantytowns around Quataria City will be nearly devoid of soldiers. Haladin: Well stated. If we ardently and effectively achieve this objective, the war will swing greatly in our favor. (From left to right: Imperator Baladil and Archduke Haladin) Now for a general description: This hacienda is one of several extravagant plantation houses dotting the colossal Baladil Plantation, in the Township of Urgaul. The workers cultivate a variety of different crops, but mainly Quatarian staples such as plantains, sugar cane, tobacco, and black lotus. Black lotus is the primary article, being a powerful hallucinogen inducing flower (the violet-colored flowers in front of the hacienda; named for black seeds and ooze). While the effects are intoxicating, the lotus is still highly coveted by priests as a method of "communing with the gods" via burning them in pyres and inhaling the smoke. Baladil, being the planter, is in charge of the overall administration of the plantation and sale of goods. 009 by scaevola11, on Flickr A close up of the ornamentation 013 by scaevola11, on Flickr An angled view There are more photographs on my flickr . 25. Nordana castle is located in Avalonia and is the ancient seat of the earls of Norshire, from which Sir Gideon the half-elf has his human blood through his mother (as described in my character intro). This is the eastern tower and great hall of Nordana Castle. The great hall stands on the same place as the ancient wooden hall of the earls of Norshire, who later built the stone castle on the site. Sometimes the castle still is refered to by it's old name 'Nordana Hall'. Other modules of the same castle: South Tower Gatehouse North Tower Great hall. Eastern tower. Great hall, front and statue. Entrance to cellar underneath great hall (inspired by a similar cellar under half the great hall of Conwy castle). The Master-at-Arms yelling at the troops. A servant is going down to the well to fetch more water to the kitchen. Stacking supplies due to the rumors of upcoming conflict within Avalonia. Stained glass window, detail. Together with the north tower. For this build, I'd like to claim the following University of Petraea credits: - General building: Stained glass - Anthropology: Life in Avalonia Fourth and final module for my Swebrick Medieval community build castle, adapted for the Guilds of Historica setting. Edit: Picture of the whole castle finally uploaded. Edit 2: Moved pictures of the whole castle to the top of the post since ZC linked to this topic (thank you!) from the frontpage.
