Generic Contest Discussion
Zerobricks replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Bit of a bump, what was the agreed up contest type/theme? -
Grum's Shed

That's an interesting choice. Personally I never owned that set, but it seems like a good starter set with many useful parts and quite easy to motorize. -

You probably messed up building somewhere, there is something physically blocking your steering? -
Purism
Zerobricks replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Are you refering to this piece (32555)? It's funny that this piece has been used only once in 2001 when it was released in 8466 and than it was out of use for 4 years! And yes, it makes sense that all parts have to be in system, I suppose either the 8 mm raster for studless or a multiples of 3.2 for studded, or a combination of both.- 179 replies

Grum's Shed
Zerobricks replied to grum64's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm glad to see you back and building. What do you have next in plan? -
I don't see a good reason mentioned anywhere? What's wrong with PU? Most motors have kept the same perofrmance and general shape (+1 stud longer for some), but with added position sensors they opened up a whole world on new possibilities. Not to be rude, but without a proper reasoning it sounds to me like you want to keep PF just because you don't like changes? This pettion feels simillar to making a petition to stop manafacturing of electric cars to "save" ICE cars. Save them from what? Progress?

After building the 42122 for the review, I just knew there has to be a way to give it a proper functionality. It took me some 5 hours of fiddling in LDD and in real life to come up with this MOD, whic adds the following functionality: 4x4 wheel drive with differentials Live axle suspension with shock absorbers on both axles Working minature V6 engine Improved steering system coupled to the spare wheel I tried to keep the looks as close to the original: The balls joint were used as the abse for both axles: Proper soft shock absorbers give it a full live axle suspension: A 90°V6 has been squeezed in the front, driven by both axles: With the old HOG gone and the steering connected to the spare wheel, the rear bench was tidied up: I of course built the real one in parallel too, there will be photos and a video following soon.

Another suggestion iIf you have issues with the steeering arm coliding with the shock abosrbers, replace the suspension arms with 5L ones + thin fliftarms to get 6L and move the shock absorbers a stud deeper.

Well done and you gave it Ackermann geometry. I think a 13L gear rack would fit exactly in there without the need of other bricks.

Maybe a bit out of context, but has the bright green color been used in any other technic set?

42124 Off-Road Buggy
Zerobricks replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think that was done for the bigger 56mm wheels 76023 Tumbler which needed additonal connection points for the double wheels and than the mold for the smaller wheels followed same style. -
Well done, except for the steering linkage. Surely you could use thinner 5L suspension arms to squeeze the front suspension tighter, so that the steering links can be parallel to the arms? Looking at the model now it looks so simple and empty, but back than it was the pinnacle of Lego Technic. Makes you wonder where Technic will be some 30 years from now...

So the new beam is indeed 15 studs long. Seems like a fun set and the 80's vibes are really working for me. -
Powered Up motors: L vs. XL
Zerobricks replied to FoxOne's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
No, both L and XL motors have the same polyfuse, I think 750mA. -
Tiger 4 x 4 x 4
Zerobricks replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Given enough space I could have given it adjustable suspension height which would increase stability even further at high speeds. -
Tiger 4*4 are 6*6 are built on more or less same platform, they both use 4 RC motors and a dual speed gearbox coupled with portal hubs. Wildcat on the other hand uses planetary hubs with no gearboxes. If you want a fast offfroader go for the tiger 4*4 If you want something a bit slower, but simpler go for the Wildcat The Tiger 6*6 is the most capabale offroad of them all, but slowet than the 4*4 version. I did try to upgrade both tigers with 4 BuWizz bricks, but the extra power causes the gearbox to grind and break gears in low gear, so it was simply not worth it. And yes, BuWizz 3.0 will be capable of driving 2 RC motors at once, that was one of my requirements for it's development.
