    Beatrix

From Pharaoh's quest, these guys used them as wings. Although I really liked it I never got anything from the series, I bought that part via bricklink.

I'm planning to convert that full hull ship to a double decker, just have to find some more black slopes first . I had a rudder but in the end the ship looked better without it.

    Beatrix

163D Almost two months ago I started building a new battleship, a French corvette I named Beatrix. I recorded the building proces in a WIP thread. And now I finally decided to post it. My sister photoshopped a background in some images for me. Also I'm happy to announce that this is my first ship of which I provide digital building instructions! (see below) Sailing to the end of the world...Wait I think I can see the end . The Beatrix is a 20-gun corvette, a fully rigged ship with 4 courses of sails on the main- and foremast. So basically it's another one on the massive pile of frigates in the index . The hull is a white prefab one (from the Friends cruiser) compromised out of a complete bow, 5 midsections and a partially costum built stern. The cabin has working lights implemented in candles (more of that below) and the capstan can be used to haul up both port and starboard anchors simultaneously. I didn't bother to show off that last feature as systems like that became a standard on my ships (see a video in this thread). The upper decks detach from the ship to reveal the interior. However, as many ship builders know it's not evident to combine an accessible interior with the tumblehome shape of a ship and its rigging. You may notice that most of the interior pictures were taken before the ship was rigged. Interesting fact, this ship was named after one of my aunts, just like my previous one (Christine) was named after my mother, they are sisters, sister-ships . I think the stern is my favourite part of the ship. Yes, I'm definitely happy with that part. The capstan. The helm. The skylight is really transparant, which is cool when using the light feature. Chasers on the forecastle deck, to capture that fleeing ship... Chasers on the quarter deck, to evade that persuer, atleast if there is a ship fast enough to keep up with the beatrix and forming a threat . Some interior pictures. costum guns (smaller ones) woulc be more appropriate I think though. I intentionally kept the ship low but that also resulted in the ship having no hold, apart from a small 8x8 storage that is not even two bricks deep. The one and only staircase . Wait for it... Bazinga! And then there was light, a feature I copied from my old frigate Farore's Wind (though it was better imlemented on that ship). I now realize the cabin does look a bit unfinished . Beware when you see this through your monocular... More pictures in my brickshelf gallery (once public). And a comic about her maiden voyage, incase you're in for some silliness . So what's next? Guilds of the Brick Seas! ...And maybe some more ship building. Perhaps it's time to get this old dusty thing from the shelf and give it another try. While building the Beatrix I had to strip parts from my old frigate Farore's WInd, perhaps I restore her to a new battleship... Although I really should dump the prefabs for now, it's time for some serious costum hull ships . Building Instructions available for download here. (right click, 'save as')
  4. Thanks, I like the description you added on the blog . Glad you like it, as a Belgian I know quite well the concept of droge humor . Wait a minute, what are you up to now? Oh it's a dark green one, I thought it was a black one, which I didn't have. I actually built your sigfig ofcourse, that's the goal of sigfigs really, only in the last couple of years the variety of minifigures became so great that it's getting really hard to cover everyone in a comic.
  5. Good start, she does remind me of Mr. Townsend's ship as well (which looks great). Good luck, I can't help on the bowsprit though.
  6. The cmf judge is in his natural habitat, nice courtroom, don't think I've seen one in lego so far, none from any century . I'd like to see more in this genre, well done.
  7. I'm glad you like it, the software I used is comic life 2, I found it via Frank Brick Wright originally during the Tournament of Retribution III, incase anyone else wants to direct a sequel . Just saying, comic life is free to download (trial version of 30 days) and makes comic-building very easy. I'll post the Beatrix as soon as my sister sends me the images she photoshopped for me (with background ).
  8. I wouldn't have invited him if he was a jerk . Totally forgotten . één maal frietjes met mayo Me neither I only had the hair piece matching your sigfiggy but you had to be in it. Glad you like it, I uploaded full size images of the pages although it's not really needed.
  9. Comic Hi there, I said a couple of days ago that I would do something special for the presentation of my latest ship... well, this is it, I will however post the ship itself later in the MOC forum. This comic features several signature figures (avatars) of Classic-Pirates members, more specifically those that had their input in my WIP frigate thread. However, I didn't succeed in including everyone I wanted to, some people don't have an avatar/sigfig and I don't always have the parts to recreate one. Also, if you're looking for a serious story...this is not it, I mean, the main character is buying baguettes for pete's sake . On the other hand, this comic does show some new pictures of my latest ship, the French corvette Beatrix. As for the plot, my sigfiggy invites over his friends to go on a sailing trip with my new ship. Enjoy. I've been wanting to do another comic ever since the TORIII ended, originally I was going to make a celebration party comic but circumstances stopped from doing that. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it, perhaps that's easier if your avatar is part of the comic . I'm sorry for the open spot on page 6. I will post the Beatrix tomorrow or the day after .
  10. Great buildings, I like the high embankment, great use of those angled panels for that. Once I got my house-building skills up-to-date I'm going to try a harbor as well. Very nice so far.
  11. I removed Eurobricks from my bookmarks a couple of days, it helped . I had my last exam the day before yesterday, good luck with yours. Will you add an Idol to the bow? (I mean when the exams season ends ofcourse).
  12. Doing the rigging like it was really done...I don't think I'm up for that, not yet atleast. I think a smaller type of vessel is more appropriate to try first, before an actual fully rigged ship. I must say though something like this does look sexy . Defenitely something I may be looking into later. Thanks a lot of the feedback. Thank you, I added some black wedge plates to seperate the white hull from the yellow headrails, a color clash that needed to be dealt with. That made it look a lot better, there's still a small light blue/yellow issue though. I assume it's mostly the color clash that forms the problem of the bow. Not even close, there are some very long WIP topics to found around here, although it's difficult to find them because they are not indexed. My Flying Dutchman WIP topic ended with 141 replies, natural as it was an active topic for a much longer time. I added a basic sail plan this morning, I'm gathering a special crew for her maiden voyage .
  13. Nice collection, some battle scenes would be awesome
  14. I love it, great use of that baseplate, orient expedition, right? I think you managed to get much on a relatively small space, a busy atmosphere. I'm looking forward to that harbor scene
  15. Very nice, great rock work, I'm currently working on improving my own rockwork skills. I like that low hanging palm tree, I can't recall where the brown dino tail came from though (it's not from a dinosaur is it?). Kep it up!
  16. I agree with Kurigan here, widen the ship, prefab hulls are not suited for a 4th rate battleship. I love the side view, the galleries look great, keep it up!
  17. I know, I know Exams are over now so I'm back in the game . Btw, it's not a british ship so no His/Her Majesty's Ship. This will probably be the last update in this thread, For the rigging I use the same rope as I used on the Christine. That may have been a bad choice though, I didn't manage to get the ratlines on the shrouds then. Unfortunatly I didn't succeed this time either, I practised on a test ship first... I can't get it right, either the ratlines hang to much or the shrouds deforms. I assume it doesn't have to do with the rope, I used different rope on the Flying Dutchman and the same thing happened there. Only on a weathered, sea-crusted ship like the FD that's not much of an issue. I must be really clumsy with rigging I guess . Anyway, I'll get working on the sails then; Recycled paper and a brown pencel to draw the lines. Its current state: The corvette Beatrix, almost ready. ...And behind her the reason why my budget dried up so early this year I have taken some interior pictures just before I added the shrouds, you can wait for the full post of the ship to see them or you can check them out now if you can't resist clicking this link .
  18. ...On steroids? Nicely done, she looks low and maneuverable. I agree with Mr. Townsend, if you place the stern one stud further and widen it with two studs it would nicely cover the gaps from the broadsides. By the way, how long did it take you to build this ship? I thought you were occupied with your frigate WIP. Indeed...can't let that happen, time to work .
  19. You'll find contrary definitions on the internet, which is actually natural because there are different definitions throughout history and places. This is what I accept; A brig and/or brigantine is a two masted ship with the main mast taller than the fore. The difference between a brig and a brigantine lies in its sail plan, I conclude from this that they are kind of the same ship, which makes the term brig(antine) for me acceptable. The term brig or brigantine does not specify anything about armament or gun deck, unless you're talking about a brig-of-war (according to the british rating system). A frigate is a ship with a continu gun deck throughout the length of the ship. Anyway, it assume it wouldn't be much trouble to re-rigg a brig to a brigantine or vice versa so I find it acceptable to generalize the term brig and brigantine to the same thing.
  20. Buildings like this are defenitely under-represented, I made some small pirate-town buildings as well recently (not yet posted). I'm looking forward to that harbor scene .
  21. I love that transparent staircase, really nice, funny choice for personnel .
  22. This is a surprisingly interesting discussion, I guess I'm a rebel too... Although I'm pretty sure I must have followed the instructions long ago when I put the studs down .
  23. I'm going to build a new ship and I will call it "the Bounty Hunter" . Guess what its target will be .
  24. I picked Haven Guard because it's very neutral, I don't like the sound of colonial or company and I think LEGO wouldn't like those either. Uniform color = green because I find black a boring color and I don't like orange at all (nothing against my Dutch neighbours, it's only the color I don't like )
  25. I can explain that .The technique works best if you keep the ship low (the broadsides in particular) and the broadsides should have a rather sharp angle (which is part of the reason why the ship should be kept low). The angle I use is about the same as the one in a 2x2x2 slope brick. I noticed you used such parts on the bow, that's how I can see the angle of your broadsides isn't sharp enough . A tip I should give is to use shorter hinges (a combination of these and these for example). In my technique this angle has a great influence on the shape of the ship seen from above.Furthermore you will find that after adding channels for the rigging, cannon hatches, catheads, galleries, etc. the flat sides will become less of an issue. I like what you have so far, that mortar on the bow sure is a force to consider .As for the cabin, there are many possibilities, one that wuld suit well I think is the construction like CGH's frigate (you'll have to scroll down a bit). But the stern I constructed for my WIP corvette would certainly work here as well.Maybe you have a preference on what windows to use?Keep it up . Appearently .
