  1. Breakdown

    Humble beginnings . . . .

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah from Kitchener Ontario . . . . . Canada. Till someone shows me something more substantial, home of the biggest most complex 12V lego train layout in the nation. There's only one 12V set that I can recall being sold here and it was the 7857 crossover track to my knowledge. Everything else had to find it's way here via a number of different countries world-wide. My interest was primarily spurned on wanting and then receiving lego train set #7715 one Christmas in the 1980's. I was young and thought that it would be much cooler to have 7715 plus the stupid battery set, over 7722 which had the battery operation more "integrated" let's say. But what got my interest going in the 12 volt stuff was seeing the mini-catalogue that came with the 7715 set and displayed 7745, 7866 and other great late sets in the 1980's grey track collection. It might seem funny, but I always thought that set # 7860 was stupid, because as a child I just assumed that it was like the illuminating bricks, look, the light is changing, I didn't know that it actually could stop and start the train remotely. So . . . here I am today, and most of this layout has been in the basement like this for a while now. There's three 12V engines and in this layout - both ends of 7745 are equipped and one in the 727 train. Even though it looks pretty integrated, it's not there's two completely different circuits and then two completely different transformers with them. Long story short,I was moving a bed into the room (it's in pieces) you can see the mattress and boxspring on the wall there, and invited my now 7-year-old nephew over to play with the big train just one last time and then had some friends over (adult friends) and we went nuts playing with it, and I'm thinking that the bedroom in the basement can wait. Proof that I'm Canadian lies in the outlets and the hockey puck collection on the wall. Just some shots of the honest beginnings. The end goal is something more city-like and visually appealing, a Youtube video and then probably a tear down to be honest or move so that I can get that double-bed in there. I'm looking at a local opportunity to acquire another 7745 train, along with some more track components (honestly, i have absolutely no idea what another one of these is doing here??) Some pics to enjoy, I've been looking through this thread and trying to see similar and not many layouts. To be very honest, this layout is Very space efficient! Hoping to update weekly and we'll see if I can't turn this into something to be proud of.

    x-cross track for PF Trains

Hello all, I saw a few weeks ago and decided to build it myself. I have to say that it works pretty well... I will try to make it more robust this weekend but by now it works quite well. I will count how many times can the train cross it before taking it apart... which drives me to the question: Is it fine to glue lego plates? What should I use?

    MOC: PRR B1 Switcher

Presenting my little Pennsylvania Railroad B1 electric boxcab switcher. The B1 was a 700HP switcher used on the PRR. It had an interesting looking 0-6-0 wheel arrangement. They were built between 1926 and 1935. Originally they were operated in semi-permanent pairs as the BB1 class. They were splitted into single B1 units later on. I built this engine as it was a cute little boxcab and to learn to make stickers with Avery labels. It was also a good use of the wheel set from the LEGO Monster Fighter's Ghost Train. In order to motorize it, I may have to build another one to make a BB1 unit. The B1 currently doesn't have enough room to fit in the battery box, IR receiver and motor. That's a project for another day.

GFLUG - Tampa Train Show Display video

Here is video of the Greater Florida LEGO Users Group display at the Tampa, FL Train Show. The style is much unlike my older videos as it revolves around a round-the-track cabride. ENJOY! I highly recommend some Dance music with it, namely "In My Mind" my Ivan Gough, to be synchronized with it both starting at the 0:00 mark, because it flows well.

    [MOC] Micro-Train

This MOC was made for "Wild West Trains" Russian LEGO LUG contest. But I have not enough time to finish it to participate. However, Micro-Train! First look: Train. General view. And another. Station in Western style. Train himself. Tender. When does the coal in the tender, it is possible to saw some firewood))) Passenger car... For the carriage of passengers))) Rode the train across the river... "Our engine is flying forward!" (You know the Russian sequel?) Staged Exhibition option. Thank you for your attention! Your, Pikachu.
  7. I've built up a layout to drive around my 3 meters long Octan train. The locomotive is based on the vintage 7755 shunter locomotive. In the 80's 7777 train idea book there's on some page an oil refinery. I've built that one in Octan colours! I've added a few lights to the loc: when the loc is driving forward, the yellow light is lit, when it drives backward, the red light is lit: And ofcourse, I've made a video!

    Happy 'Rockin'' New Year!

Posting this in this forum because of the pun... enjoy! and Happy New Year! or... Happy Rockin' New Year! The last MOC builds for the old year are an expansion to my LDD-conceived rock hoppers.
  9. The video is nothing fancy, I need to get more creative now.
  10. The past three months I was building on my new project: a container terminal that loads and unloads containers from trains: all automatic. I designed the Lego buildings, hardware and software upstairs in my "Lego room", which isn't quite big. So in the end I had to install the whole shabang in my cleared out living room. Thank God I have girlfriend who doesn't complain about these things! I had one weekend to get it all working. I've built the whole thing up with a friend of mine but somehow I couldn't get the electronics working. It had to do with failing communication between the microcontrollers. Frustrating, since it all worked just perfect upstairs in my Lego room! So I did some last minute soldering to make the best out of it. That's why just one side of the terminal is functional. I working on an improved version to make it all work just perfect! And here the result! Enjoy!

    Holiday Town/Train Layout

Hi all, As was mentioned on my modular thread, I was going to be doing a Christmas layout. It would be Florida themed which would be different than doing a Winter scene. Fortunately, I found time to get started. Almost done, but here's a short preview video of it! Note: while it looks like a train thing, I gave quite a bit of time to doing the town buildings. Not sure which subforum it would belong in, LOL. Enjoy! A teaser pic is also attached:
  12. Hello from sunny Singapore! With a few days more to Christmas Day, I'd like to share some festive creations with you. All aboard! Have a chuggin’ Christmas with this little locomotive. The Choo Choo Mini comprises 50 parts and is a great example of what you can achieve when you build in different directions. Little Rudolph says hi to an 8-bit reindeer from the eighties. Twinkle, twinkle. Here are three views of the next Christmas creation. Can you guess what this is? My New Lego Train Table

So my first table were odds and ends of plywood joined together by plywood scraps underneath and placed on my dining room table. It was, in a word... rough. With the removal of the dining room table, an opportunity arose to build a new table in the basement under the stairs which doubles as the dogs "pound". The goal was to maximize space while leaving clear paths to get to the laundry room and the dogs area under the stairs. Also, there was a pillar to deal with. I started by staring at the space until my eyeballs ached. I really didn't want to make mistakes after cutting. Finally I came up with this sketch: Everything looks right on paper though. I decided to tape it out, to be sure it would work: The dimensions worked out to be 7.5 x 9.16 feet with an access space of just under 3 x 3 feet in the middle. I decided to abandon the "L" shape in favour of a square. Time to cut wood! Specifically, 3/4 inch plywood from Home Depot. I hate warping and uneven surfaces so I went thick. In deference to my family, I made the decision to add some rubber shelf liner material for noise reduction My last table I painted the plywood green. This time I went with vinyl cloth. My wife did an amazing job wrapping it for me. A table needs legs. These came from my local Canadian Tire 2 to a pair. To prevent bowing, I added a third leg to the long sections. The short sections got one leg each. The braces were added to level the connecting edges. Finally, as a finishing touch, it was decided to add skirting to the table. Ta Da! Now to the Nitty Gritty: Budget. The total cost was $426. It was more than I budgeted, but I was willing to spend a little more to make it look good. The skirting in particular was a bit pricey, but I figure If i'm going to blow all this cash on plastic, I can at least have a good space to put it on, especially since I don't use base plates. So overall I had a great experience making this. I am NOT a handy person, but I pulled this off (with help from my wife) and I feel very proud whenever I come down and see what I built with my own hands. I also like that it is modular and can be added to (or rearranged) in the future. for now, it's time to plan my layout! Here's what I've got in mind (note the bridge): Thanks for reading!

  16. In preparation for Halloween, I've added Power Functions to my Ghost Train. Ghost Train - Power Functions by dr_spock_888, on Flickr Replaced the front boogie with PF train motor: Ran the wire through the firebox. Installed a battery box in the prisoner car and IR receiver in the crew cab. Optional: A magnetic coupler can be added to pull other trains. MOC: Just refrigerator truck

Hi. I wanted to make any car for my NS loco and was trying to build refrigerator truck, hope You like it. P.S. I was inspired by The X-files season 3 episode 10, but this is not a copy, just idea The most interesting in the end, also I had doubts about subforum subject, because this MOC have some sci-fi moments.
  19. Yesterday I received two sets of PF train motor, but I found the axle 7 is too long so that I can't attach Motorbogie, Ornament. Then I tried axle 6 but it seems like too short, what can I do?
  20. I have a substantial (in my view) investment into Power Functions trains and track. I currently have about 12 modern PF trains, and about 100 feet of plastic PF track. I have many remotes, motors, etc. Our group, MBLug, just finished our second display show (my first), and I was very "envious" of many of the electric trains. In addition, I had to borrow track to go through my section as I do not own any 9v track. My section was 16' long, with 2 rail runs through it. My question is simple: Is it worth it to now go back and buy some 9v trains, track, and accessories even though I have this significant PF investment? I'm a purest to a point (I will bricklink build something that is difficult/impossible to get), and would consider getting pieces to build a Santa Fe or BNSF or Metroliner without making them 9V, or buying them and converting to PF. Should I convert my PF trains to 9v, and pickup some older 9v trains and track, or should I buy older 9v trains (without the track/etc.) and convert them to PF? The only problem is, by staying "modern", I'm kept out of the displays. My trains are all battery-operated, and the LUG show co-ordinators insist on 9v only, which means none of my fantastic trains can be put on display at a show here unless I convert to 9V (which I currently have no means to do). What's your opinion? How have you or your LUG handled the (no longer recent) transition from 9v to PF? Locutis
  21. I want to know if someone know how to check if a locomotive is on a curve track? One way is to use a axle to instead of bogie pin, then put a rotation sensor around that axle so that curve track can be checked. Does anyone have any more simple way to check locomotive on curve track?
  22. While building/soldering/programming on my latest train automation project some trains crahsed into each other. So I came up with the idea to make 6 train frontal crash. Doing so, I needed to isolate some parts of the crossing, otherwise the trains cannot drive into each other. See below the result ;)
  23. I am planning a project that will be a layout as below, but when I check the electric, td2.0 program told me this layout has a short circuit, I am not sure if this is correct, can you check it for me?

  25. Hello All, I am very much interested in the Lego Train systems. Almost all of the sets are over 150$. Now, I am from India. So, if I include takes, shipping charges etc, it is really sky rocketing. Also, Engines are really what drive me the most. So, I am thinking if I should go ahead and purchase an Engine and few tracks and power it and finally add coaches later. So, is there any way to purchase Engine alone?. I really am interested in the make and model of the Maersk Train from Lego. So, how do I purchase a single component of a set?. How do you guys see this idea of purchasing?. Please share your thoughts as I am virtually new into the world of Lego Train systems. Thanks, Pavan.
