Can someone explain what these books have to do with Lego?
-
No idea what you mean! Other than Queen references! Are you telling me that we are the champions of the world? A child of the 80's all the way! I was actually born in the best year: 1978. The advent of Classic Space!

Man bublible, not sure how you do it, but you always capture the high weirdness of Classic Space. This craft is just wacky in all the right ways. The landing treads really contrast the with the sleekness of the wings in a way that short circuits my brain in a good way. What's that detachable thing on the craft's nose. Is it a drone? A robot? A satellite? A sensor console? Who knows! But it works as all of them. It challenges the observer to think. Oh man then you should really like bublible's stuff! Those are COOL! I always loved the weirder airplanes. I had this GI Joe jet from the 80's:

I think Benny's Spaceship Spaceship Spaceship is every bit as good as the old stuff, and I love the Exo Suit. I have no doubts a reboot COULD be better than anything made before. They just have to not make stupid obvious mistakes like - Giving space minifigs aviator helmets *cough* Space Police 3 - Not giving the minifigs air tanks (Mars Mission) Etc.

Great job! I think this really captures the essence of Blacktron! SNOT (Studs Not On Top). I really like the SNOT look. It's supposed to be for more "realistic" looking designs, and is heavily used in "Neo" style space builds. I really like the look. Anyone who builds in SNOT style surely knows what they're doing and probably aren't going for the regular studded Lego look.

What, bring back Space? Eww, no. Gross. Exploring the far reaches of the galaxy with awesome space ships and rovers and bases? Sounds BORING! Having lights and protrusions on your craft that might be weapons but also might be sensors thus forcing me to decide what they are? Sounds too ambiguous. Do you expect me to use my imagination? Isn't that stuff for nerds? Next you're going to suggest using vibrant colors. Blue space ships? Colored windscreens? How GARISH! Grey space ships with clear windshields for life! Also...paying homage to your roots and giving your most ardent fans something they REALLY WANT? It would be business suicide for sure! I mean kids HATE old style design sensibilities. Which is why none of them buy Star Wars stuff.

:D That is hilarious!

Heh. Also, looking at the front of your little transport ship: trans dark green and black look REALLY GOOD together!

What I'm getting at is, I'm pretty sure if there was a set where all the boys were effete princes and the girls were warriors, there would be an epic storm of man tears. And if you think about how weird and alienating a set like that that would be to you, you can see why your suggestion is a cop out.

Lego themes that we would like to happen

Sorry, I was being sarcastic and it wasn't obvious. I definitely don't like the xenophobic "aliens are evil" stuff we keep seeing in space themes.- 451 replies

This is crazy. I was JUST thinking "Man, I'd love to see bublible render one of his awesome retro designs in classic space colors." And you just did. Way cool.

I love this. A lot.

Let's just say I have a very hard time believing people were mad enough to complain in any significant numbers because Lego didn't include the instructions for every throwaway alternate build idea on the box. It's not even technically a complaint; it's just asking for more. "You were nice enough to provide alt build ideas, could you be even more nice and provide instructions too?" I also highly doubt that any company cares about "complaints" like this; it's only the bottom line that matters. What I do believe is that it costs real money to pay designers to come up with those builds and perhaps it's not worth paying for that when just putting more pictures of the set itself on the box is better for sales. After all Lego is selling sets, not imaginative building blocks that you are supposed to reuse to build other things.

I don't believe that.

None of the Lego castles include garderrobes. Totally historically inaccurate! Where did the soldiers poop? I'm sure it just tears you up. Lego is not a history class. Lego is a toy that is meant to be fun. Castles are fun. Knights are fun. Girl knights are fun. Worrying about whether female knights are "realistic" is like wondering why castle sets lack latrines and piles of horse dung. *BEEP BOOP* Please do not use slang *BEEP BOOP* Non-standard language protocol does not compute *BEEP BOOP* See guys there is ONE female knight in Lego castle history so sexism isn't real. They aren't. Dude, Lego had terrible sets across the board during this time period but you're pretending this KK1 was unpopular because of a single female knight? Okay. Please link to posts where you complain about how the Black Falcons aren't an actual historical faction. Otherwise I'm going to think this is just you really hating on women. Nailed it. I thought this was clear. She's called "the sorceress" and she's definitely the first character that comes to mind for 80's kids. Also if you google "sorcercess" HOLY SEXUALIZATION BATMAN!

I'm more upset that the boxes no longer have the alternate builds on them. Those were always so fun to look at. Also I really miss the catalogs you used to get in the box. Those were bricking magical. The best feeling in the world was getting a new catalog and seeing all the cool sets inside.

It's funny how some people say that Lego sets should not be made to appeal to a specific gender or age group, and that things like age and gender don't matter, and in the good old days all the figures could be boys or girls, kids or adults. And that we should all just play how we like without categorizing ourselves. But that just doesn't work in the market. When you target specific demographics, you make more money. That's just how it's always worked, with everything, not just toys. My wife always gets pissed when she sees the Friends sets in stores. She says "why do the girl sets have to be pink?" Well, Lego had non-pink gender neutral sets for years and girls weren't interested. You have to do what works. Divide and conquer works.

I decided that the only way I'll ever accept minidolls is if they bring back Fabuland and use the minidolls with animal heads. Since the old Fabuland figures were not standard minifigs, I can rationalize this.
