  1. Thanks and glad you like them @Tariq j, @Nightfall, @ScaleCarModels When I started designing them it was difficult to know what features to include. Also I wanted them to look realistic but after doing a bit of research online it soon became clear that different countries use different styles of road markings, not to mention the fact that some countries drive on opposite sides of the road. So in the end I gave up the idea of making the road markings specific to any particular location and instead came up with my own generic style that suited the buildings and vehicles I've currently got set up. My hope was that they'd be recognisable as real roads even though they aren't completely accurate to any particular country.
  2. I just feel a smaller 16 wide modular released each year would be great. Still keep the usual large modular every January but release a smaller one to compliment it every summer so that we end up getting 2 modulars each year released 6 months apart. You could argue that releasing 2 sets a year would perhaps water down some of their appeal, but dunno about you guys, I'm already itching to know what the next modular will be and it's only February.
  3. Here are a few I'd seen... https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/profile/486-hinckley/ https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/profile/1558-shadows/ https://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/profile/8966-fugazi/ They each have their own personalised banner running across the top of the profile page. These are all Eurobricks staff and moderators though so I'm assuming only they are allowed to have this.
  4. Really nice, this looks great! Much more realistic than the current yellow Lego City bus that's available. The interior seating also looks really nice.
  5. Does anybody know if or how it's possible to add a banner image to the top of my profile page? By default everyone has a large grey box that appears behind their avatar image at the top of their profile. I notice that some people have got their's replaced with a large banner picture though. Can anybody do this or is the option only reserved for Eurobricks Staff?
  6. @AllanSmith @zoomzoom78 @Jasper Joppe Geers @LegoModularFan @fred67 @ColletArrow Glad you like the new designs and thanks a lot for the kind comments. I tried to use camera angles and arranged the buildings in a way that gives the impression the layout looks bigger than it really is. In actual fact all of those photos were posed and shot on a small table that measures 4 feet by 2.5 feet. Obviously it's never gonna be Jang City but it just goes to show, it's still possible to create an interesting display even if you've not got space for a really huge layout. My main aim with these was to get the lanes as wide as I could within the space of a 32 x 32 baseplate but still include space for an extra lane for buses and parking bays. Not sure how this equates to width in studs but each lane measures approx 8cm wide.
  7. This may sound odd to other lego train fans but if lego did create a Harry Potter train I don't think I'd buy it even if it turned out to be a brilliant looking set. I'm not really a fan of the films and I think I'd look on any potential HP train as more of a gimmick than a proper lego train set.
  8. Yes please, I would love a 16 wide modular, if only to fill in the awkward gap created by assembly square. Seriously though, I have a brother who is more of a casual lego fan than myself. He often says he'd love to have a go at building a modular but can't justify spending over £100 on a lego set. I'm sure there are many people in the same boat so a smaller and cheaper set would appeal to them greatly. Also once they'd built that, the hope would be that they'd enjoy it so much they'd want to buy the bigger and more expensive sets. As I'm sure we all know, once you've caught that modular bug there is no turning back.
  9. NEW AND IMPROVED ROAD DESIGNS Last week I mentioned I was working on some new designs for my roads. I managed to finish these over the weekend and have posted some new pictures below. The new roads are intended to be more realistic and now feature a printed asphalt texture, different styles and colours of road markings, a bus lane and parking bays. They are still printed on squares the same size as a 32x32 baseplate but this time the roads fill up the full width of the sheets so that the road edge now finishes flush with the pavements on the modular buildings. Let me know what you think. Do you prefer this style or the more familiar Lego style I had tried to recreate with my first attempts last week? "Watch Out! That's a nasty looking pothole in the road ahead!" "Aaargh Heck!"
  10. Don't get me wrong, I really like Creator 3 in 1 buildings as well. Especially the small shops and house that you can see in the foreground, left and right in this picture of my layout below. Although they're small I think these buildings compliment the large Modulars quite nicely. Unfortunately they seem to have abandoned this series of creator buildings in favor of the new modular style ones like this...
  11. Other ones that used to really captivate me as a child were these wonderful Lego Pirates displays. These old photographed displays certainly had more charm than the modern equivalents with computer generated backgrounds etc.
  12. Good idea! So basically the set would consist of large amount of bricks, tiles, door/window pieces etc which are useful for building modulars. Kind of like a MOC beginners set. They could even provide a booklet with different ideas and inspiration for different buildings that can be created using the pieces. This would be a bit like a Creator Expert version of one of those Lego "Classics" sets that allow kids to either use their imagination or to follow instructions for making several minibuilds. It would be a bit like this concept but just on a much more advanced and bigger scale. Not sure they'd ever release a set like that, but here's another approach to modular buildings that I could imagine Lego taking at some point in the future... Rather than the set consisting of the usual 3 floors that have to be stacked up in a particular order, it could instead be made up of lots of smaller modules that can be connected and re-arranged in many different ways so that you can to an extent, create your own look for the building. Not sure exactly how they would make this work and it would certainly be different to the usual style of modulars. This is the sort of path I could imagine Lego taking in a future set though. How would you feel about a set like this? My big concern is that it could end up being a bit like an advanced version of one of these new 3 in 1 "modular" buildings that they've started doing. I'm not keen on these style of sets at all.
  13. Just stumbled upon this thread and I've really enjoyed looking at the pics of your old layouts @Jetflap. I grew up in the same era and it was always my dream as a kid to have a large layout like yours. Although I had plenty of sets, we didn't have space at home for a large permanent layout. I remember as a child looking through the old lego catalogues, I always desperately wanted to recreate those beautiful townscapes that lego used to print. Like this sort of thing below for example. https://goo.gl/images/QzbgCA
  14. I'd love them to do a "reboot" of cafe corner but only if they released it separately and in addition to the annual modular releases. I'd be pretty disappointed if this turned out to be the main modular release for 2019 next January. I'd rather the next set was a completely new building.
  15. Another point I'd considered is that I would expect a hotel building to include some sort of a lift/elevator. Assuming this was designed in a similar way to the one in town hall, it would need the lift mechanism to be accessed from the back of the building. I can't see how this would work very well if the hotel was a corner building though as the majority of the back would be covered up when other modulars are attached to the sides. I suppose it wouldn't necessarily have to include an elevator but I would expect this is a feature most people would expect to see in a hotel.
  16. Many of my old sets had been stored in a pitch black attic for years and after sorting through them there are lots of white bricks that have taken on a brown/beige tone. Not sure if this had happened whilst they've been in storage or whether the bricks had already gone like that before they's been put in the attic. One interesting thing I noticed is that in some cases only half of the brick had gone brown. The most likely scenario I can think of is that it must have been sunlight damage that occurred whilst the set was fully assembled and on display in my bedroom when I was a child, and only the exposed sides of the bricks that were in direct sunlight had been affected.
  17. Another great selection. Think Hats and Clocks is my favourite. Just wondered. Have you designed any MOC modular buildings yourself @LegoModularFan? If so it would be great to see some pictures of your own designs.
  18. It's not something I'm planning to do at the moment sorry. I designed them using CorelDraw which is not as widely used as software like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. Also the files are pretty huge so it just wouldn't be very practical. There are other road templates available to download online though. I was gonna use one of these originally before I decided to design my own. Here are a couple of links to other sites you can download them from. https://www.reddit.com/r/papercraft/comments/2xj6yv/lego_city_roads_pdf_template/ https://sellfy.com/p/9eno/ There are also plenty available for sale on Ebay. Here is one example. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEGO-8-5-x11-Printable-Road-Plate-Standard-Dark-Gray-PDF-electronic-only/131199578974?epid=1531950807&hash=item1e8c1ab35e:g:-~wAAOxy3yNTgqwW
  19. Those designs are a bit over the top for my liking too. However saying that, I'd still take those sets over Nexo Knights any day.
  20. This is a good point. If they wanted to do an accurate representation of a hotel then it would need to be pretty huge and possibly with more than the usual 3 floors. I think they could get away with doing a standard sized set though with maybe only a few guest rooms and still call it a hotel even though in reality a building like this would be more like a Bed and Breakfast. It wouldn't be very true to a real hotel but then the same can be said for Parisian Restaurant which is pretty unrealistic when you consider it has only got 2 dining tables inside.
  21. This looks great. Wish I had got space at home for a big permanent layout like this.
  22. The machine I use to print these can only print up to A3 size. So although I could print them a bit longer than a standard Lego road plate I wouldn't be able to print a long sheet which could then be folded like a contertina. Also I think if I tried to fold them then the print would probably crack along the crease, and once they'd been folded it would probably cause them to no longer lay nice and flat when they're unfolded. Well I produced these using the printer in my office at work. It was ok to do this just for a few prints for myself, but I don't think my boss would be very impressed if I used the printer to make copies to sell to other people. So I don't think I'd be able to do that. Nice idea though. If you're interested in printing your own backdrop to put behind your Lego City then I would recommend looking online. If you do a google image search for "Lego City Background" quite a few decent images come up. You can download these and then providing the resolution is good enough, you can print them out. Here is the one I used on the photoshopped copies of my pics. Obviously I cropped the foreground and minifigs off first though.
  23. So have all the City sets for 2018 now been revealed or leaked? Or is there still a chance we could get a big town centre style set to replace 60097 or maybe an updated Town Plan as it's the 60th anniversary?
