  1. That might be a better option for any future designs. The problem with making them too realistic is that it runs the risk of clashing with the simplistic charm of Lego. Maybe a hybrid between the 2 styles would look better. I am considering doing a design that would work for narrow cobbled streets. A bit like this sort of thing. I think a street like this would look pretty good running beside Parisian restaurant and some of my smaller creator shops and buildings. Perhaps not quite as narrow as this though. You are right. Arrgh, a knife wielding maniac with a smile on his face. Looks like I've got a real psychopath in my city.
  2. Although the main build is obviously a modern city setting, I think the 2 alternate builds are supposed to be historically based pirate sets. That's how it looks from the leaked picture. We will just have to wait and see. I know they will only be very small and simple Pirate builds, but as far as this ongoing drought of Pirate and Castle sets is concerned, I'm starting to feel like the last man on the dance floor at the end of the night... at this point I'll take whatever I can get.
  3. Ha ha . Also I didn't realise when I was setting up for the photos but if you look carefully the chef in the one below appears to be wielding a knife . Maybe he is upset the city pizza company have been stealing his customers.
  4. They are a lot smaller than the modulars. There is a good photo showing size comparison on the eurobricks review page for 30136 toy and grocery shop. I've copied the picture below. Despite the size difference I think they do compliment the big modulars very well. If you put them side by side they look a bit too small but I think if you put them on opposite sides of the street they work really well. If you look at my homemade road plates topic you will see some pictures of these creator buildings displayed alongside a couple of the modulars. Although they've now all been retired it's still fairly easy to get corner deli and park street townhouse. Both are really nice and fun little builds. By the way I think that alternate build of bike shop and cafe that you posted by Inyong Lee is fabulous.
  5. Has anyone seen the leaked images of the new Creator 3in1 sets due to be released in the summer? 31078 looks quite interesting to me. It is a Pirate themed childrens tree house. Although the main tree house build is only a novelty pirate model, the other secondary builds both look as if they are legitimate classic Pirate style models. One looks like a small ship or shipwreck and the other is the typical brick built skull hiding a treasure chest on a desert island. The leaked catalogue images are pretty blurry so it's hard to tell for sure, but it does look as if Lego Pirates, will be kind of making a small comeback as part of one of the Summer Creator sets. Anyway my point is that if they can do this for Pirates, then why not Castle as well? Maybe next year we will get a Castle inspired Creator set. It's not as good as getting a whole new Castle theme, but it's better than nothing I suppose.
  6. Thanks! Regarding the sidewalks - as well as printing roads I did actually print some sheets of just continuous sidewalk pattern, so that I could use this to fill in gaps at the side of the road where no buildings were positioned. You can see a bit of this in the foreground of the picture below. I see no reason why not. It might be a bit tedious to manually cut holes in to them though.
  7. I'm not a fan of those new style buildings with "modular" elements that can be swapped around. I imagine having to incorporate this modular style to the sets must be pretty limiting for the designers and as a result we end up with sets that look a bit of a mess to be honest. The subject matter they choose doesn't help either. This year we've had a house with a skate board ramp running up the side and another one with a ski slope built across the roof of a building. Most of them look as if they've been plucked straight out of a child's imagination. I think that's probably the whole point though, they've altered the direction of Creator 3in1 sets slightly to ramp up the play features and make them more attractive to young kids. For me Creator has always been the best source of little buildings to fill up a town layout and compliment the Modulars - apart from City if you don't mind having a layout filled with Police and Fire Stations . With the old style of realistic Creator sets being abandoned in favour of these new "wacky" modular designs it doesn't leave us many options apart from the main large Modulars. I'm holding out hope that the "Modular Pastry House" or as Brickset are calling it - "Modular Sweet Surprises", will be a decent enough set. I don't think it's intended to be compatible with those other Creator shops from past years, but hopefully it will still look decent in a town layout.
  8. I agree, it doesn't really matter how many versions they've done in the past. If they do release a new Hogwarts Express, they will will be aiming it at children who weren't around when the last versions were sold. The more I think about it, the more likely I think it is that they will release a new version. As I mentioned before, I don't know much about the films but surely, doing a Harry Potter theme without a Hogwarts Express would be a bit like doing Star Wars without a Millennium Falcon.
  9. I was hoping to be able to add a picture in to the box but I'd be happy to just be able to alter the colour as well. I noticed that the pictures don't only show up on the profile page. If you look at the list of topics under the different forums pages and hover your mouse over the avatars of the different members, the grey box pops up there as well. In the case of the staff member who have their own banner images, it shows a thumbnail of this instead of the grey box.
  10. So did he almost confirm that lego will be doing a new hogwarts express? To be honest I reckon it's extremely likely that they will. I'm not a Harry Potter fan, I've only watched one of the films but even I've heard of the hogwarts express. I'd have thought this is one of the most iconic and likely things from the films that lego would want to produce as a set.
  11. Good idea. I'm thinking of picking up the new Ford fiesta to go in my city.
  12. The 2 alternate builds are looking pretty interesting to me. The main build is obviously just a modern day children's treehouse with pirate styling but the other 2 builds look as if they might be legitimate pirate models. One looks like either a small ship or shipwreck and the other is a giant skull guarding a treasure chest. I do hope the alternate builds are intended to be proper pirate models and not just playground equipment dressed up in a pirate style like the main build. It's hard to tell from the blurry image though.
  13. Yes I've been looking at the image again. You are right, well spotted. I hadn't paid that set much attention before as I assumed it was just another creator tree house set. This one looks more interesting though and all the builds look as if they have a pirate theme. The main build looks like a kids play/tree house with pirate inspired play features. The second set looks like a typical pirate set with giant brick built skull face guarding a treasure chest. I wasn't sure about the third one as the image is so pixelated but I think you are right, it looks like as small ship or maybe a shipwreck. Obviously the main tree house is supposed to represent a modern playground or back garden scene of children playing at being pirates. I'm not sure about the others though. Are the 2 alternate builds supposed to be legitimate lego pirate sets or just pirate styled playground equipment again? If they are proper pirate models then that is gonna make a lot of pirate fans including myself very happy.
  14. Apart from the buildings and vehicles being compatible with City they don't usually have much of a connection with other themes. That's why it seems like a pretty random idea to me to have 2 Pirate themed sets. They could have easily done a roller coaster and tree house without the Pirate elements. That's why I wondered if it might be intended as a subtle nod to Pirate fans.
  15. Ok thanks. Yes I can imagine the issues it could cause if everyone was allowed to upload large banner images. Thanks for letting me know anyway.
  16. You are probably right, wishful thinking on my behalf. I'll keep wishing though...
  17. Although we know that there will be a Pirate themed roller coaster set released this summer, @LegoModularFan has just pointed out over in the Creator 2018 forum that 31078 Treehouse, also looks as if it will be Pirate themed. He is right, I've just been looking at the leaked images of this set and all three builds look as if they have a Pirate theme. One of the secondary builds looks like it has a large brick built skull in a similar way to 70411 from 2015. The main build looks like a kids tree house based on a pirate ship. It has what looks like the front section of a ship with flag hanging from it and a crows nest on top of the building. There is also a treasure chest and it looks to me as if one of the minifigs is wearing a jolly roger hat. It's hard to tell for definite as the images are very pixelated. So there are 2 Creator sets coming out this summer with a Pirate theme. Can we take this as any sort of sign that Pirates might be back for the 30th anniversary next year?
  18. Yes you are right. In fact looking closer it looks to me as if the main tree house build is also pirate themed as well. It appears to have a section that looks like the front of a ship with a flag hanging from it. There is also what looks like a treasure chest and a crows nest on top of the house. It's almost impossible to tell for sure because the image is so pixelated, but I think the minifig standing on the treehouse is wearing a jolly roger pirate hat.
  19. Thanks @Juxtapoisson and @SollX I haven't tried laminating them. I think that would make them too glossy and would also cause them to slide around on the table too easily. Another problem with laminating is that they would end up with a clear plastic edge around each sheet where the laminate pouch seals around the edges. I would have to trim this off but in my experience of laminating, once that seal has been broken it can cause the laminate film to get tatty around the edges and start to peel away over time. This would be a good idea if you've got access to a printer that can run long continuous sheets of paper. The reason I did mine in squares is so that I could mix them around and create different road layouts just as you would with official Lego road plates. I think printing them on big sheets would be good if you knew in advance exacty how you wanted your road layout to be set up. They were all printed in full colour on to 400gsm white card using a digital laser printer. I know what you mean, this probably wouldn't be the best option for Lego purists. I think it's similar to when people print their own stickers, make their own sails for Pirate ships or use 3D printers to create their own bespoke pieces. It's not something that will suit everyone. The way I look on it though is that all I've done is create a printed base on which to display my Lego sets. It's a bit like creating my own versions of those printed backgrounds that Lego use on their packaging and shop displays. Whenever Lego display their City sets in shops they don't very often use the plastic city road plates. Instead they display them on a specially designed and printed background like in the image below. Also Lego have themselves released a new playmat set recently which contains roads printed on to cardboard, so you could argue that in some ways it's a similar concept to this.
  20. That was my hope as well when the title of that set was first leaked. Having seen the blurry leaked images of the set though it doesn't look as if it's intended to fit in with those other sets. It doesn't have the same pathway built in front that all the others include and it will have an open back and the modular style that Creator 3in1 sets have adopted on their more recent buildings. The leaked box art also looked to me as if it's supposed to be more of a beach themed set. It's difficult to tell though from the blurry leaked images so who knows, maybe this set will still look good next to those other Creator shops and buildings.
  21. With all this talk about people wanting 16 wide and smaller modulars released, I just wanted to bring up some Creator buildings that I mentioned in a post on the previous page. For me these sets always satisfied the need for smaller and cheaper buildings to go with the main Modulars. I know they are much smaller and not even "modular" in their format. They do have a similar look and feel to the modulars though and some pretty interesting build techniques considering their size and the fact they are aimed at a younger audience. Just like the main modulars, TLG released one of these each year and each set has a pavement/pathway along the front so that they can be stacked side by side in a similar way to their bigger brothers. I do feel that these sets were Lego's attempt to create a cheaper smaller alternative to the Modulars aimed at kids and younger people. Anyway, my point is that after releasing these sets for 4 years they have now all been retired and with no new additions for this year their is now a gaping hole in the market for smaller town shops and other buildings to compliment the large modulars. A yearly 16 wide modular release would fill that gap perfectly. The fact that they'd carried on with these for 4 years would suggest that they were popular sets and their is definitely a market for smaller sets with a similar look and feel to the big modulars.
  22. I've just been looking at these wonderful buildings designed by @Jasper Joppe Geers. They are all very impressive. Don't think these have been posted previously, but apologies @LegoModularFanif any of them have. Muntstraat Police HQ Collison's Bike and Cycle Shop Muntstraat Post Office Wow, that thing is stunning! I love the glass canopy section at the front.
  23. So does that mean the option isn't possible for general EB members?
  24. If a Castle theme doesn't come back any time soon, personally I don't think it will be as a result of the new Harry potter sets. I can only see the resurrected HP theme going for 1 or maybe 2 years. I doubt it will stick around long term like Star Wars has. Also I can understand how Star Wars prevents other Space themes from being made but the similarities between HP and traditional style Castle themes are much looser in my view.
  25. It means "Direct to Consumer". In other words these are sets that Lego sell exclusively through the Lego stores and not through other retailers.
