I would say the Classic period ended in 1998. It was then re-launched in 2000 as Knights Kingdom and followed with the various other Kingdoms and Castles themes until 2013. Although each of these themes have their differences with some having more fantasy elements than others, they were all basically just an evolution of the original Castle theme from 1978, in the same way that Lego City is an evolution of the original Lego Town theme. This is the way I've always looked on it anyway. TLG simply altered the style to make it appeal to the different generations of children. One could argue that Nexo Knights was simply the next evolution of the theme just with the fantasy elements turned up to max. I look on Nexo Knights as a separate thing altogether though. It involves Knights but that is where the similarity ends. It was Lego's attempt to try and create it's own franchise similar to Ninjago which would spawn TV shows, video games, comics etc. Now that Nexo Knights is out of the way I'm sure that we will see a return to the traditional Castle series in some form. Maybe it will still include a lot of fantasy elements but as long as it stays grounded in a medieval setting/era, then that is ok with me.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bricked1980 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for the heads up. Just had a look and it looks great! It will look very impressive next to Ninjago City, but I reckon it would need a lot of work to make it look acceptable alongside the Creator Modulars. -
Apologies if the wording wasn't very clear in my original post. When I used the term "classic castle" I was basically refering to all of the traditional style castle waves that were around between 1978 and 2013. I don't expect that they would re-release classic sets from years gone by but my hope is that maybe they could release a brand new traditional style castle theme that perhaps pays homage to some of older factions and themes, in the same kind of way that the pirates theme did when it was resurrected in 2015. Although hopefully any future castle themes will last longer than the short lived 2015 pirates did.

Yes and Lego and playmobil ghostbusters.

With the demise of Nexo Knights, this seems like the perfect time to bring back the classic Castle theme. I would much prefer non-licenced sets. The only licenced stuff I'd be interested in seeing is sets based on Game of Thrones but doubt that would ever happen.. sigh! I think Classic Castle would work well at the moment. There is a lot of interest in medieval themes and styles created from TV shows and movies like Game of Thrones. On top of that it's the 40th anniversary of the original Castle theme so now seems like the perfect time to bring it back. Unfortunately I doubt it would happen for maybe a couple of years after Nexo Knights ends. Traditional style sets would seem like a step backwards for kids who've grown up seeing Nexo Knights on the shelves. No doubt adult fans including myself would love to see the old style Castle theme return but I do think they'd struggle to attract the same children who've been used to playing with Nexo's. So sadly I think it would probably be summer 2019 at the earliest before any other sets connected with Knights or Castles get released.

[PRESS RELEASE] 21313 LEGO Ideas: Ship in a Bottle
Bricked1980 replied to VBBN's topic in Special LEGO Themes
If anyone is picking up the free 60th anniversary set with their purchase of ship in a bottle, you might like to know that the mini build of Black Seas Barracuda can fit nicely inside the bottle if you remove the flags from the top of the masts. Here's a video showing how it looks. Looks pretty impressive to me, possibly better than the main ship that the set comes with... -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bricked1980 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Great, wish there were some pics available. Last year when Ninjago City was released, a lot of people felt that the technic pins had been included so that it could be attached to the main Creator Modulars, some people even felt it could actually be considered a sort of spin off from the official modulars. I think it's pretty safe to say now that this was not the designers intention though and the only reason the pins were included was so that Ninjago City could be connected to the docks and any other future Ninjago modulars that get released. Even so I am very much looking forward to seeing if and how this can be modified to fit with the modulars and the awesome ideas that people come up with! -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Bricked1980 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Reports just coming in from the Nuremberg toy fair are saying that the rumored Ninjago Harbor set 70657 will have technic pins so that it can be connected to Ninjago City. Looking forward to seeing how this can possibly be adapted to fit in with the Creator Modulars. -
Stickers in Lego Sets (opinion)!
Bricked1980 replied to vinchente000's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Generally I'm not a fan of having to put stickers on to Lego sets. At least they do give extra details though and at least they're not as bad as some that were used in the past. Who remembers this beauty from the early 90's? The van had stickers that went across several parts, basically meaning the set couldn't be taken apart without ruining the stickers. https://brickset.com/sets/6350-1/Pizza-To-Go -
A couple of years ago I set to work cleaning and restoring many of the old sets from my childhood which had been stored in my parents attic for over 25 years. Most of them were covered in caked on grime very much like the ones in your photos. I soaked the pieces in warm water with a very small amount of mild detergent. I then painstakingly scrubbed each brick with a soft toddlers toothbrush. After this I simply laid them out flat on a towel and left them to dry out thoroughly over few days. It took ages but was well worth the effort. Most of the bricks regained their original shine and look as good as new.

A new review has appeared on YouTube. This is a good video to watch as the main focus of the review seems to be about how DD works alongside other modulars. At the end of the video it shows DD with PR, BB and FS. https://youtu.be/vmLRiHzcaXw

Just ordered my copy of the 60th anniversary set 40290. Have been waiting all month to buy downtown diner so that I would qualify for this free set today. Can't wait for it to arrive. ?

A third retro anniversary set has now been announced alongside the house and windmill. This one is a truck and like the others will also retail for $19.99.

I think maybe the reason we don't see more train content from Lego is because they don't class trains as being "cool" or "modern" enough to include more prominently under the City line. I think most people would be in agreement though that a train makes a much more attractive toy than a garbage truck or a pizza delivery van. Don't get me wrong, I love those sets too, but I just think Lego are missing a trick with their trains. A smaller locos sold separately without any rolling stock, track or power functions would fit nicely in to the "classic vehicles" range and if offered at an affordable price, this would be a big seller in my view. It would also compliment the big train sets and give more incentive for people to buy those as well.
-
At this price I'm assuming the sets must be presented nicely in a good quality box perhaps with a special comemorative booklet included or something like that. Would love it if they included a lift up flap on the front of the box like the classic sets from the 80's and 90's used to have. So far the only anniversary sets that have been revealed are fairly small and to be honest, un-inspiring sets. I'm still hoping that one of this years Lego shop exclusives will turn out to be a big anniversary set aimed at AFOL's. Hopefully a new version of the Town Plan or a re-make of a classic set from years gone by. A huge re-imagined version of Black Seas Baracuda would be great, although unlikely I suppose.

I agree, my kids are just as happy pushing their trains around. Very small children in particular much prefer to use their hands and push or pull the trains along. I see no reason why push along trains wouldn't sell well. They make plenty of other obscure vehicles under the city line so why not more trains? I know some adult collectors would shudder at the idea of junior style push along trains, but as long as they are designed well and with the option to add a motor if desired then I don't see why this couldn't work. This is a great idea. Trains would be a perfect fit for Ceator 3in1.

Here is a shot of DD next to MS. http://www.imgrum.org/media/1692400602448149240_5664966465

Unfortunately I think the TLG are only gonna produce trains more regularly if they were more popular with kids. The fact that the large train sets are so expensive means that they are never going to sell as well as some of the cheaper City sets and vehicles and they would simply be too expensive for a large proportion of parents to buy for their children. Trains in general have and always been a timeless favourite amongst children though so I'm sure they would be more popular and sell very well if only they could be made a bit cheaper. How's this for an idea... TLG could produce 1 or 2 train themed sets each year under the City theme. They needn't be a full size set with track, power functions etc. An engine on it's own could retail for around £40 which would be a much easier pill to swallow for most parents buying for their children. A motor and power functions could be added on separately if needs be but I bet many kids would be more than happy to just have a train they could build and push around. Rolling stock could also be sold as cheaper standalone sets but maybe this wouldn't be as popular as the engines. Obviously these smaller sets would compliment the bigger full size train sets really well, but by making smaller cheaper sets they would be more accessible to a wider range of people. So please Lego... rather than churning out constant re-hashes of helicopters, police vehicles and camper/caravans each year, give us some more trains in this price bracket instead!

Not sure if this has already been reported elsewhere but here is a video showing the micro scale version of Black Seas Barracuda from the 60th Anniversary set. I assume the guy has just put this together using the instructions and parts already in his collection.

This is where i'm gonna put mine too. As you point out there is a small grey curved section at the bottom left corner of the cafe in AS which looks as if it will line up perfectly with the grey elements at the base of the teal coloured tower on DD.

Looking at the catalogue, 31077 is listed beside the the recently released modular skate house. The box dimensions are also listed as being the same as the skate house so my guess is that this one will be within the same price range and have a similar piece count to the skate house even though judging from the low quality catalogue pic it does look a bit smaller. The guy who originally pointed out these leaked sets referred to this set as the "modular pastry house" in the catalogue it is listed as "Pastelería modular Surpresas Modulares Doces". According to google this translates roughly as "modular sweets". So I think the English name for this set will end up being "modular sweet shop" or something like that. It certainly looks like a sweet/candy or ice cream shop judging by the picture more so than a pastry shop.
-
This was my first thought when I heard about the pastry shop too. Having seen the picture though I'm afraid it doesn't really look as if it will fit in very well with those buildings. It looks more like a beach side ice cream shop rather than a pastry/cake shop as the title would suggest. It looks very brightly coloured and is in the new modular style similar to the recent skate house and ski lodge released at the start of January.
-
Thanks so much for this. With recent reports that lego wouldn't be showing any new sets at the upcoming toy fairs I had feared it would be a long time before we got to see any of the new summer sets. You have saved the day though.

My favourite one is the boat and the awesome pirate rollercoaster. The pastry shop looks pretty good although reminds me quite a lot of a friends set.
