  1. So Lego and food are not a good combination. So this would be a really really bad idea then.
  2. These are all great. The Steampunk Paris layout looks absolutely stunning. "Would I buy a set like this?" Yes I think I probably would! But "would TLG ever release this style of Modular?" I don't think they would to be honest - at least not under usual Creator Modular line. Considering the amount of flack DD got for being a bit different to the norm, I think anything steampunk inspired would probably be a bit too "out of the box" for a lot of collectors. Look forward to following the new thread, let us know when you've set it up.
  3. Game of Thrones is in a different league to LOTR. Even if you take away the nudity you've still got the bad language, violent beheadings, throat slitttings, main characters having their heads exploded and young girls being burned alive to name but a few. Despite this I would absolutely love to see Lego sets based on Game of Thrones. Speaking of LOTR, Amazon have bought the rights to produce a TV series prequel based on Tolkien's stories. This wont be out for a couple of years but I wonder if there could eventually be any Lego sets to tie in with this?
  4. Here's a new review of Downtown Diner, courtesy of The Brick Fan. https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-creator-downtown-diner-10260-review/#more-28232
  5. Ok thanks for that. Perhaps the UK and Europe will get a different 60th Anniversary set later in the year. I assume Walmart in the US must have struck up a deal with Lego to sell these 3 retro sets exclusively.
  6. Yes I think it must be part specific then as all the other bricks in my set were fine. I believe that old flag piece has since been replaced with a newer version which has slightly thicker clips. So perhaps this was a common problem with that specific part back in the 80's and 90's. The funny thing is I've got a large selection of old Pirate sets and loads of those flags pieces. The only ones that have deteriorated were the ones from Black Seas Barracuda. This was originally my wife's set though so has been stored in a different house under different conditions for all these years. So perhaps environmental factors or chemicals in the plastic do have a role to play as well.
  7. Anyone know if the UK will get these 3 retro sets at some point? Or are they just exclusive to the US?
  8. That's interesting what you say @AFOLguy1970. I assume the broken parts on your MOC had been left assembled on display? When I first took ownership of my Black Seas Barracuda it had been taken apart and bagged up but some of the pieces hadn't been completely disassembled. Some of the flags were still attached to the flag poles. I guess over the years the ABS can shrink and expand due to changes in humidity and temperature. If the Lego bricks are left clipped together this can cause too much stress especially on delicate parts like the clips on the flag pieces. Although my set was boxed up in storage, prior to this it had been left assembled for many years on a shelf at my in-laws house. Even after my wife had grown out of Lego, her parents still left it on display as it is such an attractive set. I think leaving the sets constructed for long periods of time is probably the worst thing for Lego bricks long term. Much more damaging than any potential chemical damage from the storage bags. This causes a problem with MOC's though and large sets like Creator Modulars which are obviously designed to be left on display.
  9. I'm not sure what plastic the bags were made from but they were definitely the sort of things that are designed to store food. Each one was then tied up at the top using a cable tie. All of the pieces were fine apart from this one. https://rebrickable.com/parts/2335/flag-2-x-2-square-thin-clips/ The clips on almost all of these and the printed flags had become brittle and could be snapped very easily just by squeezing them between my fingers. I'm wondering if it could be the chemicals in the plastic bags as you suggest. I work for a printing company and I always store my Lego pieces in clear polythene bags I get from work which are designed for holding sheets of paper. I thought this would be a good option but after a few months I've noticed that if I take the bricks out they do have an almost oily or greasy feel to them, similar to how you say it makes yours feel sticky. I might have to look in to other options for storage then. Maybe paper bags would be a safer option. My old sets had survived very well in my parents attic for over 20 years and it would seem a shame if my attempts to protect them are actually having the opposite effect.
  10. Love Game of Thrones and this is brilliant! The mini-builds look very much like the animated locations used on title sequence from the show. Somebody will have to have a go at animating a remake of the GOT title sequence in Lego form. That would be great!
  11. Over the past couple of years I have been going through the process of cleaning up and restoring my large collection of vintage Lego sets from my childhood. Most of these had been stored in my parents attic for 20 years or more in their original boxes. Apart from being dusty and grimey they are all in tip top condition and I've been able to clean them up to a very good standard. Recently though my in laws were had been clearing out their house and gave me a copy of Black Seas Barracuda which used to belong to my wife when she was a child. This had been stored in it's original box with all the parts sorted in to plastic bags, the kind of bags you'd use to store food in the refrigerator. It had been left on top of a wardrobe in their spare bedroom for many years without being moved. The temperature would be pretty constant in this room without any excessive humidity. The set looked in great condition. The sails were all perfect and hardly any dirt on any of the bricks. When I began to build the set recently though a problem became immediately apparent. Almost all of the flag pieces had gone brittle and the clips snapped off as soon as tried to put them together. Has anyone else ever experienced this or got any ideas why it would have happened? I've never seen it with my old sets which had been stored in a cold dusty loft for 20 plus years, but my wife's set which had apparently been kept in a much better condition was the only one which has deteriorated. I've since replaced all the broken parts but I just wondered if anyone can offer any tips or advice to prevent the pieces from going like this again.
  12. This is the wrong place to discuss space so I won't dwell on it for too long. I absolutely agree that any modern take on a classic space theme would have a much different and more modern appearance to any of the sets from the 80's. Some of the old factions from space would translate pretty well in to a modern style though. Space police would be a good example and could be reinvented. Especially considering lego's apparent infatuation with releasing different Police themed sets. I think space police would be an obvious contender for a remake. I can't imagine the corporate suits at Disney would be all too impressed if lego released their own space sets to compete with the star wars ones though.
  13. If you look at the way lego works across all themes they seem to have a pattern of recycling the same ideas over and over again every few years. City is a good example. Every 4 years or so we get a revamped police station, garbage truck, airport, train etc. As long time adult fans we can see that these have all been done before but to young kids just getting in to lego they think it's brand new and original. Castle will just follow this same pattern as far as I'm concerned. We've not seen any traditional style sets since 2014 but I think now lego will be about ready to recycle this theme and to new kids who weren't around in 2013 they will seem like something really cool and original that they must have. It hasn't happened over the last few years because Nexo Knights has been occupying that space in the market. Now that's out of the way though I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Classic space fans are the ones I feel most sorry for. I can't see them bringing back anything that resembles classic space whilst star wars is still around.
  14. I am gonna stick my neck out an make a bold prediction! I think this year's Creator Expert vehicle wont be a car. I think they'll carry on the theme of public transport vehicles as started with last years London Bus and it will be a train, hopefully a classic steam loco. Something like a scale model of Flying Scotsman would tick all the boxes as far as I'm concerned. Obviously this isn't based on any evidence. We are long overdue an advanced Expert train model though and surely it would help to promote the new Power Functions 2 system being launched in the summer if they gave the option to combine this with the model too.
  15. @LegoModularFan I really like the last one of examples you just posted, the Pharmacy and Doctors. That is a beautiful model.
  16. I think I agree with this. During the design process of the official sets I don't think the style of architecture is necessarily the first thought at all. I would imagine they start off by knowing the subject matter of the building they want to create and then the architecture just sort of fits around that. Most of them seem to be a bit of a mish mash of different styles and even though DD can be described as Art Deco, the style is quite a "cartoonified" representation. Having said that though I think the plan all along was to create an Art Deco building for this years set. Originally it was planned to be a car shop before it was changed to a Diner further in to the design process but from watching the designer videos online it seems clear that Mike knew right from day one that his set was going to be Art Deco architecture..
  17. @Aanchir I think you are right and perhaps I was being a bit over top by suggesting that children don't need any kind of storyline within a Lego theme. The main point I was trying to make though was that whenever Lego launch a new theme it seems like it has to revolve around a rich story arc with characters, locations etc. I think they do this so that it has the potential to generate further content like spin off cartoons, video games, comic etc... When Lego create these themes they usually tend to veer towards a fantasy style probably because that lends itself so well to all this extra merchandising, so inevitably we end up with fantasy themes like Ninjago, Chima and Nexo Knights. Not that there is anything wrong with these but it just means the more traditional style of themes like Pirates or Castle get pushed aside. I think a Lego theme can still work perfectly well without having to rely too heavily on a story line. Themes like City and Creator are proof of that, and I think as long as the sets are interesting and good enough then they will sell themselves without needing a cartoon network show, video game etc to support them. However I realise the era I grew up in during the 1980's is completely different to the world we live in today and I'm sure children have very different tastes nowadays. Lego know perfectly well what they are doing without needing an old fart like myself trying to make suggestions.
  18. There are some solid points in the comment made by @Faefrost however I am convinced we WILL see a new Castle theme, and Pirates for that matter at some point down the line. There haven't been many occasions in the last 40 years where we've been without a Castle inspired Lego theme. I still consider Nexo Knights to be a sort of futuristic re-boot of Lego Castle and even though the similarities to the old style are very loose. It was still essentially a Lego Castle theme, just with the fantasy factor gone in to overdrive. Nexo Knights may not of been the big success Lego were hoping for but I doubt they would permanently abandon the subject of Knights and Castles just because they think children are not interested anymore. Children always have and always will love playing with Castles. I think they will go away, re-group and come up with a new idea and new take on the Castle theme. Hopefully this will be soon but I think it could be a couple of years as they will want the dust to settle from Nexo Knights first. I doubt they'll take another futuristic approach as this would just look like a Nexo re-hash. I personally hope that whatever they come up with next will bare more resemblance to a traditional style Castle theme, but who knows. Either way I think we should simply look on Lego Castle as currently being on hiatus. I'm sure it will return one day in some form.
  19. Yes the story line in Pirates and the characters were pretty shallow, but compared to the other themes that were around in 1989 it was pretty ground breaking for Lego. I agree with what you say though. A new Pirate theme with a strong story arc running through it is not likely to happen any time soon. I think any potential re-launch of a traditional style Pirate theme would end up being a one off wave of typical Pirate sets like we last saw in 2015. This is unless they decided to give Pirates a Nexo Knights style make over with a futuristic sci fi spin. Really hope this doesn't happen. Anyway I think Lego places too much emphasis on story lines an characters in their themes nowadays. I appreciate they need to do this so that it gives options for other merchandising, TV shows etc. Most kids are perfectly capable pf playing with toys and creating their own stories and scenarios though. I think quite often people forget what a powerful thing a child's imagination can be. In many ways forcing children to go along with pre-fabricated stories and scenarios kind of goes against the very essence of what Lego is in my opinion. The big advantage that Lego has over other toys is that kids can use it create anything they want. They are limited only by their imaginations but forced stories can sometimes spoil that simplicity.
  20. Yes I think you are right. I reckon the 2015 pirate range was only ever intended for one wave of sets.
  21. I have just found this interesting website. http://www.carneycastle.com/index.htm The guy has spent years building accurate scale models of Castles from Great Britain and Europe. I am not suggesting for one minute that TLG would ever produce commercial sets anything like this. It's a very interesting site to check out though and there are some great models to look at, I especially like his model of Caernarfon Castle.

  23. How about a Modular Las Vegas style casino. It would give them the chance to carry on from DD with bright and striking colours and gimmicky features and brick built lettering. Not necessarily in Art Deco style but this would look good sat next to DD. However I don't think Lego will be doing a casino any time soon. Gambling and drinking might be too hot a topic for Lego to consider, also the tragic events that happened in Las Vegas last year would make this too delicate a subject for Lego to consider.
  24. I never paid much attention to those Ninjago Pirate sets when they were first released but actually they do look pretty good, and the Pirate minifigs look very cool. I wonder if this is partly the reason why the 2015 Pirate wave only stayed around for 1 year. Perhaps they ended it early to make way for this Ninjago Pirate faction.
  25. To be honest I can't really see Lego doing a futuristic flying pirate ship approach any time soon, because I believe they've already done something similar to this a couple of years ago. I don't really follow ninjago so don't know much about their sets or characters but I believe there was recently a "sky pirates" faction with sets like this one. https://brickset.com/sets/70603-1/Raid-Zeppelin
