  1. Just wondered if any experienced MOC builders could offer me some advice please. I have been working on a Design for my first MOC which will be a 16 wide Modular building with roughly 1300 parts. I've been designing this using LDD and am almost at the point where I want to have a go at building it for real. Can anyone suggest a good method of generating instructions from my LDX file? I know there is a feature built in to LDD for making instructions but is this the best method to use? I'm not bothered about the instructions being really professional looking or anything like that, but I obviously want them to be clear enough that I'm gonna be able to easily build the thing. I'm new to all this and it has been a bit of a learning curve getting used to LDD but I'm really enjoying the process of designing my first modular building.
  2. This is a cracking MOC and when it's combined with the other Models in your display it looks simply stunning. Look forward to seeing more of this!
  3. It seems that every year a Police Station is at the top of a lot of people's wish lists for the next Modular. It also seems like a really obvious candidate for a set. Lego must be aware of this, the only reason I can imagine it hasn't been done yet is because it would have clashed with any City themed Police sets that would have been released during January. @Johnmeel raises a good point in the post above. Maybe next year will be the ideal time to launch a Police Station.
  4. Congrats on reaching your first month of posting these wonderful MOC's. That must mean you've posted nearly 100 designs so far. I don't know how you manage to find all these but they are very interesting and fun to look at. Keep up the good work!
  5. I love the Islanders sets and have still got most of the sets from that theme. I would love to see it resurrected in some form but not sure Lego would ever do that again. With the notions of native tribes people being oppressed by European Pirates, I can just imagine the PC brigade would have a field day, if it wasn't handled right.
  6. Thanks @cerebrus Thanks @LegoModularFan! The guy who runs Brick Fanatics has emailed me and asked if I'd mind him using any of my other pics on the website. So at some point in the future one of my other pics might be featured there as well.
  7. I had a nice surprise this morning. One of my snow pics has been featured on brickfanatics.com as their "Brick Pic of the Day" http://www.brickfanatics.com/brick-pic-of-the-day-lego-town-in-the-snow/
  8. I agree I don't think it will be anything as distinctly American as this years DD. I also like the idea of a post office. A British inspired building with a red mail van would be really cool. I wonder if they would do vehicles 2 years in a row though? I also like the idea of a theatre. (musicals and plays, not cinema). Maybe it will be a hotel as per the hint made by Mike in the designer vid for DD. I think we can take that hint with a pinch of salt though. Lego aren't usually in the habit of dropping hints about future sets. No doubt the next set will probably be a complete surprise to everyone just as DD was.
  9. I was completely mad on lego as a child in the 80's and early 90's. I would say I went in to my Dark Ages during my mid teens but even then I still maintained a subtle interest in Lego over the years. I would probably have classed myself as a "closet lego fan" even though I would never have considered buying lego sets during this time. Then in 2015 my daughter was approaching 4 years old and was starting to show an interest in Lego. I took her in to the Lego Store in Sheffield and I remember being completely blown away by all the awesome lego sets they had on display. One set in particular that caught my attention was the 2015 pirate ship which was being displayed in the shop at the time. Pirates were always a big favourite of mine as a kid and seeing this brought back memories of my old lego pirates collection. Anyway I would say this is what brought me out of my Dark Ages. Basically my daughters interest in Lego gave me just the excuse I needed to get back in to it myself. And so started the long process of recovering and cleaning up all my old lego sets which were being kept in my parents house starting of course with my beloved lego pirate ships. I also started to buy lego sets for myself again. This started with small City vehicles and creator sets, but then in 2016 I couldn't resist buying my first modular building, Parisian restaurant. Lego has now become one of my favourite pasttimes/hobbies and I like to buy new sets whenever I can afford to. My wife has even bought me lego for birthdays and Christmas.
  10. I agree with both these comments. Single buildings are nice but I really like it when they create multiple buildings on a single base plate. When all the modulars are displayed side by side it looks more realistic to have lots of different sized buildings squashed together rather than a street filled with individual buildings where every one is exactly the same width. I love both these MOCs. That pub is stunning. I'm off to have a pint.
  11. If anyone is interested, here is the link to my Flickr page where you can see all my lego road pics together, rather than spread throughout the pages in this thread. https://www.flickr.com/photos/140122416@N02/albums
  12. I actually like the laundromat in BB. I'm a big fan of the modulars that create the effect of multiple buildings all on one base plate like we see in AS, DD and BB. I do agree with you though. If they want to include a storyline in the set it should be more of a subtle after thought. Unlike the cookie smuggling story which in my opinion was too deeply embedded in to the design of detectives office.
  13. I have taken the plunge and have started work on my first MOC. I've been working on it for the last 3 days using LDD. I must say this is good software and much more user friendly than I expected it to be. I've limited the pallette of parts so that it will only include parts I've got in my collection. If the design works out as I'm hoping then I'll be able build it for real. I'll post pics on EB when it's finished. Don't think the standard will be as good as some of the great models I've seen in this topic but hey, we all have to start somewhere.
  14. I completely agree. Jamie has designed some fantastic modulars and there is no doubt he is one of the best designers working for Lego. After 4 years working on back to back modulars though I think they did the right thing bringing in Mike as even the best designers will start to run out of ideas over time. Mike has breathed fresh air in to the series and introduced a different style and flavour with DD. Changing the designers around from time to time helps to keep the series fresh.
  15. I wonder if Mike will be the designer for the next modular again. My guess is he will as it would seem odd just to assign the job to him for one year. Also it seems that Jamie is now one of the designers for architecture so I can't imagine that would leave him much time to work on creator expert stuff as well.
  16. Ah yes I see. Yes I suppose the Modulars or any set aimed at adults is probably not subjected to quite as much rigorous testing, market research, play testing etc, as say, a Lego City set or something aimed at children would have to be.
  17. Well spotted! I wanted a background that looked the same as the ones Lego use on the box art of the modular sets. Problem is I've never been able to find these images without the modular buildings covering up most of the background. So I decided to make my own. I took the above picture of Assembly Square and chopped out everything from the image so that all I had left was the small sections of background building either side of Assembly Square. Using Photoshop I then duplicated the buildings and blended them together to create a long seamless street scene. I added a generic sky and here is the result below. I've used this background on several of the Road Plate photos. The snow image is the same except I used a different snowy sky for that one.
  18. Is there a large exclusive set rumored to be coming out this year? I haven't heard these rumors myself, do we know any details about it at all? I would hope it is a new version of "Town Plan" or some sort of large City Centre set to replace 60097.
  19. Yes exactly. It is a beautiful and very professional looking set. I wont dirty this thread again by mentioning the name of those Chinese rip off merchants, but if he didn't give permission for them to use it then that must be really heart breaking and I do feel sorry for him. I wonder how many AFOL's have been put off publishing their models and instructions online out of fear that they could get ripped off by these companies. Who knows how many beautiful models we've been deprived of seeing because people don't want to risk this happening to them.
  20. A lot of blame seems to go against gadgets, apps, video game and digital toys. I think Lego have always looked on these as being one of their biggest threats. These kinds of toys are nothing new though, I don't think these alone can be to blame for Lego's sales suddenly dropping over the last 2 years. Back around the turn of the millennium, TLG tried to branch out and re-structure themselves to compete with Video games and we all know what almost happened then. I think if they try to modernise and diversify too much in to other areas then they run the risk of repeating what happened before when they almost went bust. I sometimes wish they would focus more on their core product, building sets, and stop trying to be something they are not. Releasing 2 expensive movies in one year is a bit of a risk and if they keep oversaturing the market with all this extra media and digital stuff then kids eventually get fed up. I don't think it does them any favors in the long run. At the end of the day though I am not too worried about these reports on Lego's profits. A lot of articles we read online and in newspapers are pretty overbaked. As soon as the media hear that a company as big as Lego aren't performing as well then they attack like vultures and suddenly stories are being published that make it sound as if Lego are in real serious trouble. At the end of the day though TLG have already started to take steps to correct these issues. It will be a couple of years before we see if this is working or not. And to put things in perspective, even though their profits are down compared to last year, I bet they are still higher than they were maybe 4 or 5 years ago.
  21. No problem. I'm honored to think anyone would like the pics enough to use them as wallpaper on their computer screen.
  22. I really love that Barnes and Noble building. It took me a few minutes to remember where I've seen this one before and then I remembered... This design is actually produced as a retail set by Lepin. Google it and you'll see. Not sure if they stole this from the designer or whether the designer actually gave them permission to use it.
