  1. It's BAAACK! The Haunted Train never finished it's journey to real bricks, so I decided to give it a new lease on life rather than just haunting my computer. I was inspired to do this by a kid at a recent train show I displayed my models at, who asked me if I had heard of the TV episode and it's train. (and why I didn't have a model of it on display!) I took this as a sign from forces beyond my comprehension that I needed to build this engine, pronto. As soon as funds are available, it shall live on my layout! Also, the first post has been updated with the revised and recolored model. It's currently missing Big Ben Bricks medium drivers, a few types of printed tiles and a few bricks of various types.
  2. @El Garfio here is the part you seek. It's been around since 2022, and is currently made in 7 colors.
  3. Rule of thumb (as far as I'm aware) is: If the part hasn't been made in that color for over two years, it usually isn't going to be available for them to send. For most things they only keep parts of any kind in stock for a certain length of time. This period of time might be longer, or shorter - depending on what part it is / the color of the part and other factors.
  4. Yep. It was a thing up until they announced a fix in the formula in 2019. Reddish Brown, Dark red and a few other colors (I think?) were affected.
  5. I believe they staggered the release: some countries / regions got them in 1978, others in 1979 - probably due to limited factory production capability. Also at this time, LEGO's business in the USA was handled by Samsonite (the Luggage maker) - as in they marketed the sets and had different numbers than the European counterparts. Does this answer you questions @Space78?
  6. To whom it may concern: If you can build a better train, then do so - It's Lego and that's what you're meant to do if you don't like something. If you think Lego designers are being led astray, I suggest you try to become one. Then you can be screamed at by AFOLs about how your models are bad or incorrect or flights of fancy. I, for one, am just happy be got an IDEAS train at long last. The path to this set is littered with other good models being passed over. (I'm STILL pissed over Thomas not making the cut!)
  7. To be honest, I didn't find it. A fellow LUG member did, and I agreed with him. Sorry if I was unclear.
  8. Model railroad companies are in business for (semi) realism, and market to serious folks - model railroaders. Lego is a building brick company that happens to make trains with those bricks, mostly for kids and some adults. Would you prefer a model that doesn't run on the track they provide? Model railroading is dying industry, with it's average fan base above 50 years old. Would you prefer LEGO be on it's last legs too? For example: Lionel went bust in 1969, got bought out, and is a shell of it's former self these days. Also, this engine is based on a real loco: Bavarian S 3/5 N (with a three wheel tender) is they type I found it's closest too. So it's not a caricature, it's based firmly in reality!
  9. The original design's driving wheels weren't train wheels, and even if they were, they couldn't go around official curves or through switches at that size with that arrangement as you can't get that much bigger than official wheels before you start running into these issues. They probably looked at it from a business perspective such as this: "We just got new driving train wheels for the 2022 Hogwarts Express UCS but they aren't usable here if we make it run. We can't go making new in-between-size ones, because the higher ups don't see a major need with other stuff coming in the future. Smaller train wheels are more available anyway, and they are more in system with the track... maybe we can trade off the lack of new wheels for better side rod parts? They're going to hate us no matter what we do..." I, for one feel sorry for the Ideas team - and by extension, all Lego set designers - they're damned if they do, damned if they don't. You couldn't pay me enough to take the abuse they do from the "fans".
  10. It was pointed out to me by a fellow LUG member that a Bavarian S 3/5 N is more close @SerperiorBricks. 4-6-2 versus a 2-6-0 like we have in the actual set. Also, which minifig is Hercule Poirot? (If he isn't there, where is the 12th Doctor instead? )
  11. Just a thought: The curled squirrel tail used by Marshal in set 77048 from the Animal Crossing theme is just begging to be recolored for the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. If not used in an outright official figure, at least recolor it so it's usable for building custom figs of her, Lego!
  12. Thank you! Thanks, and good idea! I have added those parts need to convert the Nexo shield and clips to black to this new model's part list: This model was built from an 2002 Alpha Team set 4795 (Ogel Underwater base and AT sub) but heavily modified to fit into the Blacktron I theme. I had to fill in the spots where the flexible plastic "window' pieces were, replace the skull logo with the upside-down Tri-Force logo of Blacktron I, find ways to make the model almost totally "air tight", and add on a radar dish instead of a harpoon gun. As on the original set, the logo folds down, where it can be used as a ramp. Also as on the original set, the MOD folds open to access the inside details. Special shout out to Jon Mo who designed the brick built Blacktron logo I used on my model. Also, thanks to EliteGuard01 for finding that logo design and recommending it to me! The rear of the model. I took out the fancy spinning wall of the original set and replaced it with a bank of windows. The inside was very hard to figure out, as most space furniture is for me. I decided on four computer stations and a desk for the commander. Another source of trouble was to make the building open cleanly and close without holes. The original set struggled with this, and it failed miserably. However, I feel I managed to fix that. First post updated, and title changed to reflect new purpose of the thread!
  13. First post updated 10/7/23 with WIP's of a new 70816 inspired Blacktron model, and a second XL-15 MOD. "This is getting out of hand... now there are two of them!" More real world pictures to come of both ships, probably later next week.
  14. Sorry for the late reply, but it's done! More pictures can be seen in the first post! I'm also tagging @Darkkostas25, @JopieK, @Toxic43 , and @Man with a hat because they had posted here already and might want to see the finished product!
  15. That dog sounds horrifying.... like something out of the nightmare-inducing film known as "Coraline"
  16. To each there own! I like it if it were a different color (OG Blacktron for me!), I just wish it wasn't so pricey to begin with.
  17. Just thinking out loud: set 76232 "The Hoopty" from over in Marvel is begging to to have it's color scheme changed. Maybe white with trans-orange for Mars Mission, black and trans-yellow for Blacktron I, and blue / light gray with trans-yellow for Classic Space. Thoughts? (I was originally going to put this comment in the Marvel thread, but I think it belongs more here)
  18. In no particular order: World City (love the gritty, semi-futuristic aesthetic) Trains Classic Space (I love Benny's SPACESHIP! and other neo-classic space stuff) Adventurers Doctor Who LEGO Universe (with only two publicly available polybags, it's my smallest completed theme. However, it still counts!)
  19. 1. Brickster from LEGO Island 2. Lord Sam Sinister from Adventurers 3. Lord Ogel from Alpha Team 4. Lord Garmadon from Ninjago 5. Lord Vampyre from Monster Fighters 6. Vladek from Knights Kingdom II 7. Lord Business from The LEGO Movie (I don't think this is licensed, is it?) If we can count figs that weren't physically made or constraction figures then add these guys: 8. Baron Typhonus from the LEGO Universe video game 9. Makuta Terridax 10. Makuta Icarax
  20. @iluvspacepolice It was both a play feature and a storyline element. You looked through this red-lensed magnifying glass part and some of the lines / shapes would disappear. (this idea was later reused for the recent Batman set 76183 "Batcave: the Riddler Face-off" from 2021 to reveal the Riddler's messages.) If I remember correctly, the Ogel orbs were originally invented in the 2001 storyline to control people's minds and turn them into Ogel drones. Second wave was the same but for sea creatures. This third wave was different, as instead of controlling organic beings, they were used to freeze the Earth, - and later time itself - solid. Alpha Team's storyline was left unfinished, so who knows if he won or not! Hope this answers you question!
  21. Great story, can't wait for the next weird and wonderful adventure!
  22. Real world pictures of Gordon and his train have been added to the first post! These train cars are to be pulled by a certain blue 4-6-2 LNER A1, otherwise known as Gordon from the Railway Series books and the Thomas and Friends TV show. The 2020-vintage five passenger cars (four regular coaches, and one guard's coach) are inspired by the 2019 Hogwarts Express cars. I based the colors of the coaches on a inverted set 10194 (Emerald Night) coach color scheme. I always thought the colors looked better like this, and it avoids the problems of the tan 1 x 4 x 3 train windows used in the original set. (which are very expensive!!) Thoughts?
  23. Update time! So begins the finding of the Fire Brigade 22's parts! As you can probably guess, I added a bathroom to the model. Also, the printed logo piece was graciously donated by my brother. Since 2012, when the Cars 2 set 9484 (Red's Water Rescue) was released, I've been trying to build a better front half for that set. Then I saw a MOC over on Rebrickable turning set 40586 (Moving Truck GWP) into a fire truck, as seen here. It hit me I could combine my 6-wide cabin version of the moving truck with the Cars fire truck. What you see above is the result. (I changed the nose quite a bit from the original truck, as something about it just felt off) The truck features four hoses, a roof-mounted ladder and water pump controls. If it weren't for the fireman hats being in the way, you could potentially seat two figures in the cab. As it is, it will seat one and a Dalmatian. (Also, both of the doors open.) Truth be told, the above fire truck pictures were taken back in July, which I then promptly forgot to add them here.
