[MOC] Kenner Mini-rigs -- NEW: Security Scout & Sand Skimmer

Inspired by other builders on Eurobricks, I've created my own set of Kenner Mini-rigs. These were non-canon toys from the 1980s that were designed to fit into the Star Wars universe but never appeared on screen (although a few have made their way into various media since then). INT-4 Interceptor A figure can fit inside through a hatch in the roof and the wings do fold out. The INT-4 was a repulsorlift scouting vehcile used by the Empire. The short range flyer is operated by a single pilot and can be carried inside the body of an AT-AT. CAP-2 Captivator This was my first attempt at 'upside down' building. Bossk (or any other fig) can fit fully inside the cockpit, I just have it open to avoid reflections in the photo. The CAP-2 is a model of walker used by the Empire and bounty hunters. Two mechanical arms extend from the front of the vehicle with a blaster cannon mounted between them and a large mechanism on the back hold prisoners for transport. MLC-3 Mobile Laser Cannon I managed to fit wheels underneath the build to allow for easy movement and the cannons have a limited range of motion. The MLC-3 light thank is a type of self-propelled artillery mounted on a motorized, tracked chassis, used by the Rebels on Hoth. Desert Sail Skiff A small, open-air, repulsorlift utility vehicle. The sail skiffs are smaller in size than the regular skiffs seen in ROTJ and were designed to be used as one-man personal fliers. Endor Forest Ranger This build is based on a design by @jamie75, I made a recolour of his cockpit design and changed the wing design. The wings are capable of rotating through a full 360 degrees and the landing gear folds up. Unfortunately I don't have an Endor trooper to use to show scale, so here's Jedi Luke. This is a repulsorlift vehicle used by the Rebels on Endor. With its unique gravity-controlled cockpit capable of supporting a single pilot, the vehicle was designed for manoeuvring through the forests of Endor. The vehicle had two gyroscopic wings and a large blaster cannon on each side MTV-7 Mobile Terrain Vehicle This model is largely a rebuild of an existing MOC by @jere7my with minor adjustments. I really like how he used the technic rubber axle connectors to allow for the wheels to pivot from the body. The MTV-7 is a single tracked, double wheeled ground car used by the Empire to scout planetary terrain, in particular on Hoth. Family photo And finally a bonus round... Imperial Sniper This wasn't produced as part of the Mini-Rig line, but rather from Kenner's line of Body-rigs - similar non-canon toys on a built on a smaller scale to the mini-rigs. The Imperial Sniper is a repulsorlift craft piloted by one person. It features a large open seat, two blaster cannons, and a grappling claw. -
A small Imperial patrol providing peace and order on a remote planet of our favorite far far away galaxy. Multi Terrain Vehicle MTV-7 by Veynom, on Flickr This vehicle is based on the old famous Kenner' Star Wars toys from the 80's, and particularly the mini-rigs serie. Not much to say, but it still has a few play features. You can drive it while making some "vroom vroom" noise. The wheels arms can rotate into various position to accomodate the terrain. Hoewer these do not come back automatically in their original position, unlike the original toy. The turret can rotate at 360°, yes, yes. You can play with the gun and say "pew pew" as many times as you want. Hi folks. This is my first post here; hope I'm ticking all the boxes. This is the first in a series I'm calling "Mini-rigs for minifigs," the MTV-7 (Multi-Terrain Vehicle). In 1981, Kenner, in an effort to save on plastic costs, began releasing small, one-action-figure Star Wars vehicles that weren't featured in the movies but were designed with the same aesthetic. Since then, some of those designs have actually appeared in official Star Wars stories and games, but I'm basing my builds on the original toys, or rather what I imagine the original models that the toys were based on would have looked like. For this build, I'm most pleased with the solution I came up for the spring-loaded shock absorbers that were most of the fun value of the original toy. I used rubber Technic dampers threaded onto the axles at 90° to each other, which give the legs plenty of play but still return them to their default upright position when the pressure is released. If I hadn't won an "Anakin's Custom Jedi Starfighter" in a Legoland Discovery Center contest, I never would have known those dampers existed! Continuing my series of 80's, Kenner toys. I also built the Body-Rigs and the Rebels, Vehicle Maintenance Energizer. I figured, since these are smaller models, I would post all of these in one topic. A Body-Rig was a small one-man vehicle designed and released by Kenner in 1985. They were even smaller than the Mini-Rigs. Two of the vehicles have managed to appear in Star Wars: Droids: the Imperial Sniper Vehicle and the Sand Skimmer Vehicle. First is the Imperial Sniper Vehicle . The Imperial Sniper Vehicle was a Repulsorlift craft piloted by one person. It featured a large open seat, two blaster cannons and a grappling claw. It eventually saw use during the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY. This model has 185 pieces. Next, is the Rebels, Security Scout Vehicle. The Security Scout Vehicle was a one-man repulsorlift craft used by the Rebel Alliance. It was piloted by a driver in an open seat. The vehicle had two blaster cannons and a rudder to steer. During the Galactic Civil War, the Security Scout Vehicle was used during the Battle of Hoth to eliminate any Imperial soldiers that were following Rebels to the Echo Base. They were later put to use during the Battle of Endor. The pilot, on this model, is held in place by a neck bracket with the control arms coming over head. Looks like it would be a blast to pilot, but, no cover from enemy fire. Seems like a risky vehicle to pilot?! This model has 86 pieces. Last for the Body-Rigs, is the Sand Skimmer Vehicle. A sandskimmer was a small one-man vehicle primarily used to travel in desert environments. Malakili, the keeper of Jabba's rancor, used one when he let the rancor out into Tatooine's Dune Sea for some exercise.[3] It also saw usage by Jabba's Skiff Guards. This model has 85 pieces. I'm having alot of fun making these. Re-living my childhood?! Re-creating them in Lego is alot of fun and challenging too! Hope you guys like them!! The last model I am going to post to this topic is the Rebels, Vehicle Maintenance Energizer. This toy was released in 1982. This is something that no Hoth or Yavin base can go without. And, no Lego set-up should! What would you do if a piece falls off, you'll need this for the Mini-Figs to fix it!! After building the SRV-1 and Imperial Troop Transport, I wanted to keep going and decided to start building the Kenner Mini-Rigs from the 80's. There were 9 of these total. This one and the Desert Sail Skiff didn't have numbers. The other 7 were numbered 2-8. For some reason, 1 was missing. HJR, do you know why?! The Endor Forest Ranger is cool little speeder. It featured an enclosed gyroscopic cockpit and 2 large blaster cannons. It has a very militaristic vibe to it, it looks mean, like something out of a Stormtroopers worst nightmare. Anyways, this is my take on it, it can hold a figure in the cockpit and the gyroscopic cockpit does turn. There is an axel running through the middle of the model. The hockey puck shape of the front was a pain to build. I had to try to make it hold a figure, but, small enough that it kept feel of the original. After building that, the rest was easy, but, it determined the "scale" for the model. Yes, I know the color is off, but, it is cheaper to build in grays. Plus there are more pieces/ parts available in grays than reddish browns and greens. There are 237 pieces in this model. The .lxf file is my Brickshelf folder. Back to publishing MOC with this Imperial Troop Transport. Imperial Troop Transport by Veynom, on Flickr It is based on the Kenner toy from the 80's and that I owned before selling it. (argh) This version is different from the SW Rebels version, mainly because of the front curved face. I also used as inspiration source the LDD model available on Rebrickable. My son truly loves putting stuff inside this vehicle. Oops, I thought I posted this a few days after my MTV-7. Sorry! Anyways, here goes. The PDT-8 Personnel Deployment Transport was a small two-man vehicle used by the Rebel Alliance. It had two open spaces that could be used to transport people or cargo. It featured two large jet thrusters at the side and also had two small blaster cannons. The Rebel Alliance utilized several of these weapons during the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY during the Galactic Civil War. Like with my other Mini-Rigs, I took the idea and made it a little practical, IMO. Having a transport for 2 droids, doesn't do alot on battle. So I made it a little larger, while still trying to keep the shape of the original. Also, scale is something that doesn't translate well from Kenner figure to Lego very well. So, it is probably pretty close to "scale" giving the difference in figures?! The troops can be let out of the rear, guns ready to under the ramp. But, like my MTV-7, I did make a smaller, more accurate model. One that is more in line with the original. Hope you guys like it. Today, I would like to present, my take on the INT-4 Interceptor. A short-range flyer operated by a single pilot, at least one version of the INT-4 was designed to also be deployable from within the body of an AT-AT. Yes, I am thinking about modifying an AT-AT, when I get this built in real bricks. Just don't know which one. We/ I, have 4 choose from now?! 3 System and one Technic. The Technic is out of the question, so System, it is, 4483, 8129, or 75054?! Anyways, back to the model: Wings up!! Wings down!! Nice and cozy, no?! The back the landing gear down. This model was a lot of fun to make. To me, it resembles a flying AT-ST head with wings. Plus the SNOT was a lot of fun. It has 209 pieces. The .lxf is in my Brickshelf folder. Thanks for looking! Today, I present the MTV-7 Mini-Rig from the Kenner Star Wars line from the 80's. The MTV-7 Multi-Terrain Vehicle[1] was a wheeled scouting car utilized by the Imperial Army during the prime years of the Galactic Civil War. In addition to the vehicle's basic upright position, the MTV-7's large double wheels,[2] each featuring grooved surface treading,[3] extended outward from the main body to adopt a low, ground-hugging configuration.[2] Such versatility made the MTV-7 adaptable to many environments, and the vehicle was easier to deploy than the Empire's All Terrain Scout Transport walker.[3] Armed with a single rotating laser cannon, the MTV-7 held room for a single pilot in an open-air cockpit—unlike speeder bikes, the MTV-7 did not require a pilot possessed of suicidal tendencies.[3] A forward-facing, grilled headlight was positioned at the front of the vehicle.[2] This is my largest Mini-Rig. The original model had room for one Snowtrooper. I took the idea of it and made in more of a troop carrier for rough terrain. There is room for a driver, 3 troops, and 1 gunner. To get the angles on the wheels, I used click-hinges. But, I did make a smaller version of this model, one that is more in line with original. I wish there were smaller slopes, the sides of the smaller model are so flat. I like them both, even thou, the larger isn't really true to the source material. The larger has 355 pieces in it. I planned on posting this last week, but, got side tracked by life: work, family stuff, and LDD RCB. Sorry for the delay. Up next in my series of Kenner Mini-Rigs from the 80's is the AST-5. The vehicle featured two blaster cannons, each capable of swiveling 360 degrees. The vehicle had a "sentry" mode, an "attack" mode wherein the engine section would rotate to a 90-degree angle with the pilot section, and a "pursuit" mode where the engine section would rotate to a parallel position with the pilot section. It could also at least temporarily enter space. Here is a shot of the pilot. Lots of SNOT! There's studs going every way possible in this model. Plus, it does rotate like the Kenner model and also, a Mini-Fig does fit in the cockpit. The only thing, I may, have to do to it, is try to incorporate some controls somehow. The cockpit is empty, maybe on the door?? Attack Mode I nicknamed this model "the flying coffin". Shot it down, cover with sand, done! This model has 161 pieces in it and I did attach the file for this, too. Someone suggested it in another thread for one of my Mini-Rigs. Today, I would like to present my MLC-3 Mobile Laser Cannon from the 80's Kenner Mini-Rigs line. The MLC-3 Mobile Laser Cannon was a self-propelled gun used as a light artillery weapon by the Rebel Alliance. The MLC-3 was armed with twin blaster cannons and moved on a compact tracked chassis. The use of wheeled bogies rather than repulsorlift units suggests that, like many Rebel units, this was a relatively low-tech vehicle, and it seems that the cockpit hatch was opened manually rather than hydraulically. While the MLC-3 was designed to operate with a single pilot, they could be programmed to run autonomously, firing at preset targets. If you read the description and look at the picture, you will see a little difference. Namely, 2 figures, instead of a single pilot. I didn't like the look of the model when I made it smaller with one pilot. I couldn't get the "scale" and angles right, to me, it looked off. There are some big differences between a Kenner Star Wars figure and a Lego Mini-Fig, in both size and proportions. On the Kenner model, the pilots' head stuck out of the dome on the top of the model while his legs went all the way to the front of the vehicle. So, after playing with the design a lot, I scraped the idea of a lone pilot and decided on a pilot and gunner. All in all, I'm happy with the way this model turned out. Maybe a little chunky! And yes, I did "cheat" a little, I ended up using the tracks from my SRV-1, http://www.eurobrick...howtopic=100747. Working with these is a pain! This model has 296 pieces, of which 70 are tread pieces, the .lxf file is in my Brickshelf folder. Tomorrow, the flying AT-ST head, INT-4! Thanks for looking, Jamie

Today, I would like to present my Desert Sail-20 Skiff. The Sail-20 was similar in design to the Ubrikkian Industries Bantha-II cargo skiff. The sail skiffs were smaller in size however, and were designed to be used as one-man personal fliers. Unlike the Bantha IIs, the sail skiffs housed a pair of blaster cannons located on each side of the lower hull. This model is not a "complex" as some of the others. Not alot of SNOT. But, it still looks good and stays true to the original model. It is designed, so you can place a sail from the new Jabba's Sail Barge set on it. Till, I build these in real bricks, I'm not sure if it will look too big, or not. After I have this built and the sail in place, I'll have to look at it and play with from there. I believe this is my smallest model in my series of Kenner Mini-Rigs. It has 134 pieces in it and can hold one figure. The .lxf file is in my Brickshelf folder. MLC-3 to come tomorrow! The Empire is always experimenting with new troop concepts and the Cruise-missile Trooper is another of those crazy creations. The Cruise-missile Trooper was a Space fighter equipped with heavy forward armor but no shielding and the pilot was physically attached at the waist to the ship, meaning if the ship were destroyed the trooper was too. the ship though was incredibly fast and was often the first wave of assault craft leading the Tie Fighters with proton torpedoes and dual lazer cannons. The Kenner toy is the only place this craft ever existed but dispite that, Keeper of the Holocron Leland Chee stated that the Cruisemissile Troopers are to be considered part of canon. My version is as close to minifig scale as i could possibly get, due to that the only part of the figure in my ship is the exposed helmet of the pilot/trooper (minifigures have issues looking up ) . I've done everything possible to include all features of the toy possible. Reference image, with flaps deployed and side engines lowered. Hope you Like it as always Comments are welcomed!

Up next in my series of Kenner Mini-Rigs is the, CAP-2 Captivator. It was a small, one-man vehicle, designed to ambush and capture enemy personnel. It walked on two legs, with the pilot standing upright in a bubble-enclosed canopy. Two arms ending in claws extended from the front of the vehicle with a blaster mounted between them, and a large vice on the back held captives for transport. Its feet contained sensors for spying on its prey. There is a fair amount of SNOT in the model. Using the 2x2 Macaroni Bricks proved to be too small for the cockpit, but, using 4x4 Curved Bricks was too big. So, I had to figure how to use these: These provided the right amount of room for a pilot, but, also made the model a little too big. But, I still think it is small enough to pass as a Mini-Rig. Roomy?! Plenty of room for a pilot to fit! The idea of having a claw/ vice on the back to hold prisoners, seemed a little odd to me. So, I made a holding chamber in the back of the model for those pesky Rebelscum. Just enough room for Rebel troops to fit. This model has 224 pieces. The .lxf file is in my Brickshelf folder. When I heard the new Rebels show was going to have the Imperial Troop Transport in it. The kid who grew up in the 70's came out. I thought, great, this is an awesome opportunity for Lego to make one. Than I saw pics of it, I had hoped it would be treated as a full fledged set, not a battle pack. So, I figured, no problem, I'll would make my own. After playing with LDD for while, this is what I came up with: Not being completely happy with, I expanded on the idea of making it, not only a transport, but, a battle station as well: All 6 troop compartments fold down. The back pulls out, complete with holding cell for those pesky Rebels! I also included a tool rack that slides into the transport, between the pilot and navigator. Between the troops, there are weapons, so they can be let out of their compartments, grab there gear and engage the enemy. The front opens to provide cover for them. The model is comprised of 761 pieces and holds 9 troops, a pilot, a navigator, a weapons specialist, and 6 Stormtroopers. After doing this model, I started making alot of other Kenner models from the 80's. More to come................. Jamie

After completing the Imperial Troop Transport, I started looking back at some of the 80's toys from Star Wars, I came across some un-produced stuff. I have seen them before, but, for some reason. I got the idea to make the SRV-1. It's a cool little vehicle used to recover snowspeeders, transport troops, or carry cargo. Both cockpits open, cannons both rotate 180 degrees, bed tips, loading ramp folds up, and there is a winch in there. I really wish those windscreens came in trans-black, but, trans-blue doesn't look too bad, I guess. This model is comprised of 768 pieces and holds 4 troops, a driver, navigator, and 2 gunners.
