MOC SR-71 Blackbird, would love feedback!
jimmynick replied to AskYourDoctor's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The first nose doesn't quite grasp the concave curve of the Blackbird's nose. I much prefer the second one. -
On the second modular, I like the door in the middle of the glass window. I like the use of tan on the first modular - it breaks up the greyscale look. They're both great!

I was down at Water Tower Place in Chicago the other day, and they had lt. bley grille bricks and dk. red 1x2 bricks, which sorely tempted me. I don't need any, but if any of you do, keep it in mind!

This is such a huge leap from the old Sandcrawler... This news is dreadfully exciting! What's the raygun-torch sort of thing the Jawa without the megaphone has? Is that a new piece?

From the front it looks OK, but from the back it's got a great American van feel. There's nothing I'd change about this - nice job.

It's not really supposed to look run down. Oh well. I shan't be making it in real bricks. Original post has been updated with a reference image.

"Western Biological was right across the street and facing the vacant lot. Lee Chong's grocery was on its catty-corner right and Dora's Bear Flag Restaurant was on its catty-corner left. Western Biological deals in strange and beautiful wares…. You can order anything living from Western Biological and sooner or later you will get it." -John Steinbeck, Cannery Row This is a modular, so you can fit it in with your Cafe Corner (or Monterey Bay Aquarium). I had fun exploring all sorts of SNOT in the process of building this - I feel I learned a lot. This was one of the projects I mentioned in the "LEGO Plan for 2014". I started work on the facade in January, and then it sat alone for two months until I found the creativity to finish it. See more pictures at Flickr. Thanks for looking!

Good work! I like the Sheriff's Office at the very top, and I also like the "MOTEL" signs. Good luck on completing your 60s town.

21050 Architecture Studio... Gone? Back!
jimmynick replied to rollerbones's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I saw two copies of the set at the Water Tower Place shop in Chicago yesterday. I was surprised because of the talk it had been discontinued, but there it was. -
One Of The Sillier Articles I've Read On Lego
jimmynick replied to Suspsy's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Or if the torso and face have no distinguishing marks, and you have a unisex hairpiece such as this, you can decide for yourself which minifigures are female and male. Creativity abounds, and just because TLG hasn't told you that a particular minifigure is female, it doesn't mean it has to be male! Just like how TLG doesn't tell me which hand each minifig favours, but all my minifigs are left-handed! -
My friends took me to see it today. I had been apprehensive. Yes - there were lots of references to other LEGO lines. It's a shame they were really only presented as flashes of photographs. I don't "get" how MetalBeard fit into the plot, or why the Millennium Falcon showed up. It was funny all the way through, but it was only OK until we saw the plot of the film

I've always thought what alex54 did with the modulars was really cool. Read his topic. He built his modulars in a classic-town style, i.e. 16x16 base with open backs. The effect is really nice since you can fit lots of buildings into a small area.

Looks good so far, lightningtiger! I like the concrete strip separating the lanes - makes the petrol station look nice and clean. I'm not sure what to think of the awkward angle on the price sign - it doesn't look like it has a reason to be wonky, if you know what I mean.

I keep my boxes. If I want to put a set in the cupboard, I just disassemble it a bit and slide it in the box, and it stacks perfectly on top of all the other things in there.

I really didn't expect TPRU to be the vig; rather, we thought it was Kristel.- 21 replies

Lovely colour scheme, and I like the texture of the fluted bricks on the side. I also like how you made the scrolls at the top of the columns. This is a very nice MOC; I have no suggestions for improvement.

CMF Mafia 2 - Conclusion - Case Closed Redux
jimmynick replied to TrumpetKing's topic in LEGO Mafia and Role-Play Games
Thanks for the fun game, TK! I really enjoyed playing with my fellow scumsters. I'm glad my acting was up to scratch. I was planning to lurk this game but in retrospect I think I didn't. I announced my intention to lurk in the sign-up thread. You could try something like that so people don't think it's suspicious when you behave differently.- 21 replies

This is nice! I like the attention you put into the underbelly of the truck, with the grille plates and the pipes. I also like the slightly recessed lights.

The windows really make this MOC - the stonework around the tall windows, and the ring around the round window especially. They look great on their own, but because you installed LEDs, they become much more vibrant. Great work!

Since when was I ever your prime suspect? I thought you loved to rag on Peter and Melanie. Yes, everybody, let's lynch the Survivor and give the remaining scum a leg up. Great idea. Vote: Jeffrey Norris (jamesn) -
I use my iPhone to take pictures. I have a cardboard box with the sides cut out and replaced with tissue paper, and I bent a poster board to fit in from one corner to the other, along the length of the box. It's essentially a light box, but cheap. If I want a black background, I arrange sheets of black construction paper on top of the white poster until everything my phone can see is black. When I photograph my MOCs, I take pictures between 10am and 2pm when light streams in through the window. I can't get it to work quite right with artificial light - I get too many shadows. Also, when it gets darker in the afternoon, I don't take pictures because they start coming out grainy. The quality of your photos is (to some extent) a function of your camera, but is mostly affected by when and how you take pictures. A light box will really help you out.

The minty green pilothouse is very nice, and the entire build gives the sense of a trawler without being overpoweringly huge. Very nice design, and I hope you get the chance to make it in real bricks!

They're settling down well in Chicago, but I must say Grima isn't enjoying the snow we keep having!
