Help with identifying parts/sets!
ColletArrow replied to WhiteFang's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Welcome to Eurobricks! That part is fairly common; according to BrickLink, it is a "Plate, modified 1x1 with clip light'. Have a look here for more information: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=4081b#T=C. -
I know I'm quoting from over a year ago, but it's interesting that what I presume is the same one was posted again. I'll put it in a spoiler as a) it's in Spanish and b) it's 100+ lines long: I'm not really one for literacy, but I wanted a go at writing this into poetry; so here’s a simple Haiku. Fake passports for sale Or any false licences If you read Spanish. I like this art form! Anyone else want a go? I’m sure you’ll all do better than I did.

Allan's Speed Champion inspired vehicle and building creations.
ColletArrow replied to AllanSmith's topic in LEGO Town
I am doing! This looks excellent, it's a shame you had to lose the angled arm. Can you work out what the range of motion will be? -
True. 2018's sets will be a good replacement, and certainly offers a different machine than what we haven't seen in City so far. I'm interested to see where else TLG goes with those rollercoaster parts, and if they're going to be a full replacement for the old straight-rail and curved/ramped narrow gauge tracks. I'm also wondering if that's the full lineup for the new mine; there seems to be suspiciously few sets, unless they're planning on expanding it later. (This is for H1, right?)

Not sure about the 08s whistles. I do know there were many variants, some different enough to be re-classed as 09. In 1965, 3 master-and-slave pairs were created from some of them (the cab and controls removed from the one unit, so 2 locos controlled from one cab), and were classed as 13s. Their purpose was to shunt the Tinsley Marshalling Yard, which as it was still a hump yard couldn't use standard longer-wheelbase locos for risk of grounding! They looked a bit odd (I can't seem to put the pictures here, just have a google). I do love the 08s though. My first LEGO train MOC was an attempt at one, having bought the PF elements from LEGO, and inspired by this one: I have gradually built better and better versions, even if I have cheated by putting some yellow paper over the side of the Battery Box to make a Network Rail liveried one. How about the BR "USA" tank, brought over after the war to shunt Southampton Docks? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SR_USA_0-6-0T_30073_Eastleigh_MPD_70D,_August_1966_(9969640295).jpg They're odd-looking beasts, especially here in the UK, but I like them, mainly because they're different and have an interesting story. I've had a go at building one of these in LEGO, as it matches up to the grid almost perfectly in 7-wide scale. I tried with PF, but took it out as it wasn't very powerful or reliable.

Considering the specialised wheel bases designed to run on this track, I think PF-ing a model would be somewhere between extremely difficult and impossible. The main issue is I don't think they're compatible with standard train wheels. Have a look here for a close-up of the parts: https://www.brothers-brick.com/2017/11/15/powering-rollercoaster-lego-70922-joker-manor-review/

No, she does indeed appear to have the C-class lamp code, implying the coaching stock is empty; you can see the other lamp bracket closer to the camera. Sometimes modern heritage railways don't pay attention to those details, I've seen a full passenger train declared as an F-class ballast train before! At least they've got GWR red lamps. #BritishRailwaysTalk I do like City of Truro, but I'm not as much a fan of the older-styled locomotives.

Definitely! I missed loads off my list I like, just to keep it short! Overall, I prefer small to medium sized engines over big, powerful ones. I don't know why, I guess it's because it's what I'm used to seeing. I do however love the oddball, one-of-a-kind machines, such as the LMS's "Big Bertha" engine. It was built solely for banking heavy trains on the notorious Lickey Incline, one if the steepest sections of railway in Britain (I think). I know that classes as a big engine, but never mind.

Yes, another British train Nut! Although it's cliched, I love the GWR tanks (Panniers, Small Prairies, 14xx's etc). Also the GWR Collett Goods loco (should have guessed that from my username...) I also have a weird fascination with 04 and 08 shunters - I think it's the diesel body on a steam-age chassis, and the fact that the latter are still in use today (or at least variants of them). The class 17's are pretty interesting as well. To be honest, any British steam or early BR diesel gets me interested. The really weird thing is that I like the look of the modern class 66's, they look reassuringly boxy. Never thought I'd praise a modern diesel, did you? I think it's best to leave this here as it's rather off-LEGO.

Despite it's simplicity, I really like this scene. I can't wait to see how the construction work will develop.

I like that both the mining theme and police theme involve gold, as it allows the two to be linked quite nicely (as in 2012). I feel the mining machines themselves are good, even if the biggest machine seems to be a bucket-wheel excavator with a grinding-style wheel rather than buckets. They do somewhat dwarf the terrain provided though. Overall, I think the 2012 series was better, but this is a good update and would probably complement them.

TRAIN TECH Help, General Questions & Talk to the Staff
ColletArrow replied to WesternOutlaw's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Unfortunately, there isn't that I'm aware of. Only 2 PF parts exist that can reduced the speed; the 'IR Speed Remote Control' 8879 (connected via the receiver 8884) or the 'Rechargeable Battery Box' 8878 (it has a dial on it for some reason). As the latter costs ~£40, whilst the former is only ~£20 AND lets you control the train at a distance, well.- 578 replies

There must be another input, probably hidden in the base, because: a) perpetual motion isn't possible; the energy gained from the ball falling is less than that required to lift it back up, as the height difference is not equal (consider the height required for the balls to roll down the 2 ramps). It's being raised further than it's dropping, so there must be another energy input (I think, based on my understanding of physics). b) the wheel's motion implies it has another power source; it's too smooth and starts/stops to perfectly to be triggered only by the ball. I don't think a wheel powered by the weight of the ball would move that steadily. However something similar would be interesting to build as a GBC, I want to see what you can come up with.

Now that is nice. I've been wondering for a while how to get mLA's into a minifig-sized front loader, and here's exactly that, done perfectly. Although you did get the greys on the mLA's the wrong way round! I will almost certainly have to try something like this myself. Good work! -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ColletArrow replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I think the opposite is true as well; if it turns out it is real, and everyone has been pointing out how fake it obviously is, we'll look a bit silly. Also, I think it's growing on me. It looks to be a good set with a potential storyline and a fair amount of playability. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion
ColletArrow replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Overall I don't think any of the sets are bad; just none grab my attention enough to make me purchase them (or they're waaay out of my very low price range). They're all different and fairly unique models for the Technic line, and I appreciate the diversity being brought to the theme. The Mack is beautiful in so many ways. We'll have to see how it performs. Also, I love the fact that as the number on the side of 42076 is '89', so when the panel is used the other way round in the b model it says '68'. Hardly worth mentioning, but pretty clever. And one more observation: quite a lot of red this year... -

I think that's the watermark of the site the photo is on, it's present on the others on the same page. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
ColletArrow replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
So no-one knows if it is real or fake. I'm not sure. On the one hand it doesn't seem very TLG, but on the other where else could it have come from? Assuming its real, I'm still in two minds over this. I like the architecture used, and I feel it matches inspiration well. I'm intrigued by all the building styles used in it to get the shapes. However, I'm just not a fan of the prototype to care about it unfortunately, and it looks like it will really juxtapose with the other, earlier sets. Although I do want to see what's on the staircase side. -
Announcing OcTRAINber, the first contest by Brick Model Railroader!
ColletArrow replied to raised's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Congratulations to everyone involved. I hadn't seen the entries that weren't posted here on EB, and many of them had me laughing quite loud (especially the metroliner one!) Maybe I should have entered a digital build. On the other hand, I don't think I could have competed with Hod Carrier's monster. Well done to all, a truly unique contest. -
Stunning. I may have to build one of these for myself! How many ideas for builds do you have left?
-
An impressively compact and yet highly functional MOC, with excellent performance. Very well done! How did you manage to hide all the cabling?

Nice! I like that you managed to center the hydraulic rams, it looks much better. Also, good use of that bucket! -
Stephenson's Rocket & LNER J70 MOCS (LDD)
ColletArrow replied to FlyingFordFalcon's topic in LEGO Train Tech
Welcome to EuroBricks! You've got some lovely models there. I presume that when you say you've modified the rocket to be able to have a face, you realise that the chimney should originate in front of the smokebox rather than on top. It's a pretty good model overall, even if the tender is somewhat large. That J70 looks rather fine too. If you're ever going to build one and run it, you'll either need to remove the center axle or allow it to slide side-to-side, as otherwise it won't get around LEGO curves. I think that due to the restrictions imposed by the skirt it would be easier just to take it off. I love all the interior boiler detail though, well done. Also, don't worry about LDD; it's all I'm using at the moment as I'm quite a way from any real bricks and will be for some time. It's a challenge to only use parts in colours that actually exist though, as there's no easy way of telling without having a bricklink tab up to check constantly!
