  1. Reported my first spam today! It seems there is a common format from what I've seen both before and as a member: The title is around 4-5 words plucked from the middle of an English sentence that makes no sense on it's own, making them easy to spot, and the topic consists of a single link labelled as live streaming for a sports match, which when clicked tries to download a file - presumably a virus. I wonder if it would be possible to automatically remove any topics whose contents are all hyperlinks and no normal text, removing this potential threat? Other than these rare interruptions, my time so far has been excellent - keep up the good work!
  2. That's a lovely locomotive! I think you have plenty of room to put the PF LEDs in there, which will really bring it alive. The wagon is simple yet effective; I like the fact that the bogies are slightly longer with an extra stud between the wheelsets and steps at each end, although I feel this means you could extend the body a few studs.
  3. A simple yet elegant design, well done! I was going to try designing one of these myself, but now I don't have to. I think a plainer colour scheme of black/dbg/brown would work better for varieties seen in the UK, but yellow would be more appropriate for modern-day health-and-safety high-visibility reasons!
  4. As far as I am aware, the 8866 motor was only used in two train sets - the 7897 and 7898. It was used in conjunction with this part, which housed the batteries and RC receiver as well as providing a base to build the loco on. This was between the 9v metal rails and PF eras, I believe, as it used the 9v style connections and was even incorporated with the older light system.
  5. That is awesome. I love how all the small details are brought out in this huge scale! Well done for persevering to complete this model.
  6. For my OO layout, I used a small 'spy' camera; just search Google for 'car keys camera' and it should pop up. They are around 4-5 studs wide. Alternatively, I used a phone on its side, like jtlan, but with a 45 degree mirror. Sure, the footage is flipped horizontally, but it works.
  7. I see. That sounds fun, trying to work out how to ring Bob Doubles mechanically! Having two concentric rings of pegs might work, perhaps with them moving in and out as well? I haven't given it a lot of thought. I will show this to my band tomorrow evening, and see what they think. We have 2 people learning to plain hunt at the moment; it may help, it may confuse them or just distract them altogether!
  8. Well, in spare time I like to do mechanical stuff, but I think that Civil engineering is more interesting to study and (hopefully) get a degree in at Uni.
  9. Personally, as I have a small collection of parts, they are organised by colour; as I know (roughly or exactly, depending on part) how many of each part I have in each colour, I know where any part is likely to be. It also doesn't take too long to find a part in a small box of only one colour. Any parts I come across during a build I think would be useful are kept aside in small piles, and either used or returned afterwards. However, this only works because I have a small collection; if you have more bricks, sorting them by type, usefulness or how frequently you use them may be a better solution. In terms of where to start, I would start with the section I have already thought about how to build, or a section that's relatively simple; that will give you a sense of how large you want to go, and ultimately where to head next. As the cockpit of this model is likely to be more prominent, I would perhaps start there. But what do I know? I've never built one of these before! My line is smaller, more common vehicles. An entirely different approach may suit you and your build!
  10. Great model! I also like the photos of the build, that show the internal mechanisms. I may have learnt something here! Oh, and the fire extinguisher and coffee cup are great additions to the high level of detail throughout. Well done.
  11. Impressive! As a bell ringer, I have only just mastered this method in real life... I guess you couldn't ring other methods using this setup? Or is it possible to ring, say, Plain hunting on 7, so 7 bells 'hunting' with the tenor (lowest bell) staying 8th?
  12. Thanks! Hopefully Civil engineering.
  13. One of my motors currently has a dodgy connection that only works with pressure, and one IR receiver has had it's wire cut and re-soldered at the plug. I guess that's because my applications tend to involve tight spaces and corners, and not treating these components with as much respect as they deserve.
  14. Hullo! Long time lurker here; since June 2015, to be precise. I am mainly interested in Trains, Technic, Town and anything else with a mechanism in it - I like my Lego to be functional as well as pretty! I am not able to make frequent or large purchases of Lego sets/parts, so I enjoy (I have to!) the challenge of making do with my collection of parts mainly dating back to 2007. My largest set is 7945-Fire Station(which technically speaking I share with my brother, but we're too old for ownership now, aren't we?) or 42006-Excavator, seconded by 7993-Service Station. I am not sure how much time I will have for Lego in the coming months, due to exams followed by going to University, but we'll see. I look forward to joining in and benefiting from the expert opinions here, as well as sharing my own basic one with others! Let the fun begin!
