LEGO Ninjago 2024 Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to THELEGOBATMAN's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Oh, that looks awesome! As an avid Ninjago City collector who has all four sets displayed in my room I'll definitely wanna get these mini ones. -
Oh wow! The exterior architecture already felt very unique, but I love what you've done with the interior! The kitchen in particular looks quite gorgeous, with great furnishings and a refreshing modern color scheme. That said, the further up you go, the more overwhelming the white color used for the walls starts to become. It works okay for the bedrooms, but the attic feels almost blindingly white (which is very much the opposite of how I'd normally expect an attic space to look). I understand the challenge of balancing exterior and interior colors when the walls are the same color from both sides, but I can't help but wonder if perhaps the floor of the attic could be a different color at least just to avoid that overwhelming brightness.

[MOC] 71738 + 71785 Amazing Sengoku Hi-Nu Gundam
Lyichir replied to Ransom Fern's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Holy cow!!! This'd be an amazing model in its own right, but the fact that it's a combination model of just two sets is unbelievable! The scale is extremely imposing and the level of detail is just off the charts. -
New Elementary has their review of the new/rare parts from the Mansion set! https://www.newelementary.com/2023/12/lego-friends-parts-review-42639-andreas.html Excited for full set reviews of that set to start popping up, it looks gorgeous!

Not gonna bother trying to place bets as to what'll actually be chosen or what's more likely. However, my top hopes would be the Hollow Knight one, the Owl House, and the Toa Head statue. And while they aren't as clearly targeted toward my interests, there's a lot of gorgeous builds in this group like the ET poster, the moon poster, and the Godzilla project.

To be honest, a thing about forest animals is that I figure several could probably easily be introduced without a full subtheme of their own (an example being the otter habitat from this past year). I could definitely see something like a bear cub, fox, or skunk in a set like a rural police chase, camper van, or forest firefighting set. By contrast subthemes like jungle and arctic take place in very different biomes than the main City theme, so benefit more from having a subtheme of their own to help contextualize them.

It's a little thing, not exactly big news or anything, but the boxart for the sets has been revealed: https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-animal-crossing-official-box-arts-revealed/ It looks cute!

Action and Adventure Themes Discussion

It is? It's not listed in the forum description but IIRC discussion of it still went here, as a successor of the original Agents theme.- 230 replies

Personally, as somebody who also had UFO sets growing up, I feel like bringing it back is a somewhat tougher case than other themes since bringing UFO figs in line with modern fig design standards would probably involve reducing detail as much as adding it. The UFO fig designs came out in an era when Lego was experimenting with higher detail, and while some of the basic elements like leg printing have now become common, the printing on UFO figs featured relatively fine, complex detail compared to modern fig designs which tend to feature bolder line weights and more deliberate shaping and contouring compared to the intricate-but-flat-looking designs of the UFO theme. By comparison, "modernizing" classic factions such as Blacktron II or M-Tron allows for more unambiguous "upgrades" since their classic uniforms were basically a simple logo and little else. Also, compared to many other Space themes it doesn't help that the helmets and torso armor are both highly distinctive and retired, meaning specific replacements would likely have to be introduced for both. Again, comparing to other space themes which more commonly used standard airtanks, helmets, and visors, it's easy to reinterpret, upgrade, or replace those without compromising the original aesthetic too severely,

Lego Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square Discussion Thread
Lyichir replied to BrickJagger's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Speaking of chickens, the Friends Farm Animal Sanctuary set also introduces the small bird mold (that has previously come in white, dark azure, and red in both minifig and minidoll sets) in cool yellow as a baby chick, which would also be welcome in a set like this. -
LEGO Videogame Tie-Ins - Rumors & Discussion
Lyichir replied to Captain Nemo's topic in LEGO Licensed
Is it possible that there are exclusivity arrangements with Lego DC/Marvel that prevent the Lego versions of those characters specifically from appearing in another company's games? The Ninja Turtles are one of the only franchises involved that has had Lego sets/figures in the past and yet has NOT had a Lego licensed video game produced by TT Games. -
I tend to like 6-stud wide for a lot of mid-size vehicles since it helps to make cars bigger than smaller vehicles like forklifts, or go-karts like the ones in your avatar, while still fitting in 8-wide road lanes/garages/etc. 4-wide is good for some things but doesn't allow a lot of room for passengers, cargo or very much detail in general.
-
To be honest I was looking at that one in detail earlier and was more impressed with it than I expected—it's really neat how seamlessly it seems to be when closed but has a lot of interior detail when opened, almost like an evolution of some sets I've been fond of in less "realistic" themes like the Agents mobile base. It's definitely chunkier than a lot of City vehicles but it seems to use that space really well. Some other details I noticed were that the pink haired crook is probably meant to be some sort of hacker judging by her flash drive necklace, and that the new lattice pieces used for chain link fences seem to have bar connections on either side if you want to use them in a way that doesn't include the door/window frame (which excites the MOCist in me).

I don't know if there's a source on this as a statement, but I also don't totally think it's totally wrong. Not so much in the sense that "Lego would have rather have had the Indiana Jones license at the time Adventurers came out"—since Adventurers predated the start of licensed themes based on movies altogether, and came out at a time when Indiana Jones as a franchise was more or less inactive—but in the sense that in a scenario where Lego did already have the Indiana Jones theme, the Adventurers theme would likely either not happen or look very different overall. After all, if Lego currently had a license for Indiana Jones sets, they probably wouldn't launch a theme with such blatant genre similarities (which Adventurers definitely had, particularly in the first two years and Orient Expedition) alongside it. Similarly, if Lego had had the Jurassic Park license in 2000 (when Lego had already started to dip their toe into licensed movie themes with Star Wars), they probably wouldn't have launched a dinosaur-focused expansion to Adventurers at the same time—the two would have so much obvious overlap as to make them redundant. The lack of any similar licensed or unlicensed themes at the time was a big part of what led the Adventurers theme to take the sort of shape it took.

I doubt "hardcore fans" (implicitly, hardcore adult fans) are the primary audience of ANY CMF series, themed or not. These are cheap sets aimed at a large and varied audience. Targeting "hardcore" space fans above all else would probably weaken their appeal overall, not expand it.
-
You're probably not the only one who doesn't care for F1 cars, but there are probably Speed Champions fans out there who prefer the F1 cars to others. It's not bad for a theme like this to cater to a variety of interests and preferences, especially since realistic F1 cars don't really have a "home" in other themes.

LEGO Dreamzzz 2024 Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I know this was probably rhetorical but there's a pretty easy answer to this—bigger sets tend to have bigger, more complex builds, more unique figs, and generally more "wow factor" than smaller ones. In vehicle-heavy themes, there's also a tendency for some of the largest sets to be location-based, since it's harder to pull off a nice architectural build to scale with minifigures at lower price points. That's not to disparage smaller sets, there's some great ones out there, but they generally have to try to do more with less. Personally I think this wave has a pretty nice variety overall, though—the tower is indeed impressive but even the small Narwhal Hot Air Balloon has its own appeal! -
Was that one supposed to be a D2C set? If so, it's probably less likely to leak since there'd be fewer channels for it to leak from. Not to say it'd be impossible, since D2C leaks have happened before, it's just less common than sets released through other retail stores at launch.

Action and Adventure Themes Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I feel like that would be overkill... It's a small enough theme overall to fit neatly in the licensed forum, and if you started including licensed action/adventure themes in this forum it would probably include not just shorter themes like Indiana Jones but also both major superhero themes (Marvel and DC), which would risk crowding out discussion of Lego's own themes. Plus, there are already plenty of ongoing action/adventure themes to discuss here. It's a different scenario than how Lord of the Rings or Lone Ranger discussion went into the historic forum when other historic themes were few and far between.- 230 replies

I just think calling something "woke" for being gendered when it's based on, like, '50s era pulp art (when gender roles were WAY more rigid), is proof that the word "woke" in this case is little more than a substitute for "things I don't like".
-
For a second I was wondering why a Ninjago MOC was in the historic forum, but this is quite a nice theme swap! You've kept enough of the layout for it to be recognizable as an adaptation of the MMV, while infusing it with so many iconic Ninjago elements.

Review of the Sandman's Tower set! It looks great, and the new figs look fantastic! -
I feel like I'm repeating myself from a previous "why are there blind bags" discussion, but another aspect of the blind-bag sales practice that I personally think benefits the CMF series is that it allows for "less popular" figs to still sell well. That might seem counterintuitive to some, but the blind bag sales method allows Lego to make weirder, more niche figs that wouldn't necessarily fit into your average set or theme and AREN'T the best for "army building". If all CMFs had to be sold individually with buyers able to pick and choose, you might indeed see more army builders and things that fit into popular themes like castle and space—but weirder, less popular choices might not sell well enough to justify producing at all. And I think those sorts of figs, far from being "filler" or wasted slots, benefit the overall variety of options for builders and collectors by existing.

Action and Adventure Themes Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I don't really think that's an issue since the Monkie Kid story isn't really a chronological retelling of the story of the book so much as a sequel series that reuses and reinterprets characters from it. So rather than working toward a predetermined "ending", it's free to extrapolate from any characters and events in the book (and associated myths) in any order, and basically as long as they want.- 230 replies
