LEGO Monkie Kid 2024 Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
It seems to be based on Mei's biker helmets from the first two years (though she hasn't worn one in more recent sets). -
So a neat thing @Aanchir and I noticed yesterday when looking at pictures of the fire station set is that the figs have some nice variety—you have one firefighter still in his pajamas, one wearing just a t-shirt and suspenders, one with their jacket on over the same t-shirt (but with the jacket unzipped), and two in the full uniform (one with a red collar and one with a black collar). It's a neat way to offer some variety for the fire squad, including both on-duty and off-duty firefighters with a consistent uniform style.

Latest impact of other themes on historic themes

Another part I only just noticed this morning (despite being a pretty big fan of the theme) is a new shoulder armor piece in two of the new Monkie Kid sets! I feel like this armor could work for Asian historic figs, paired with a more suitable torso. -

Yeah, definitely pricey (feels like the giant cloud definitely makes up part of that price). I've been thinking I'll skip that set but I do wanna Bricklink the fig, which looks incredibly swanky—new shoulder armor on that MK and the Mei in her mech too, I just noticed! -
I think the heavy use of vibrant yellow last year was partly to help "break in" the color with a wider variety of parts—now that it's no longer new and more parts are available, it can be used somewhat more modestly.
-
To be honest even without OE's input I imagine Lego might opt for a color other than dark green, simply because dark green could be perceived as too similar to the Emerald Night (still one of Lego's most iconic and recognizable steam engines, whose shadow looms large over all such builds). If the locomotive were the same color as the Emerald Night, many potential buyers might consider buying another steam locomotive in the same color to be somewhat redundant even if the design of the locomotives was made very different. In that respect, I feel like dark blue was a good choice not only because it matches the carriages, but also because it's sufficiently different from past Lego steam locomotives which have most often been in colors like green, black, or red.

I think a lack of (new/novel) functions in some sets is one of those issues you mostly only notice if you've been buying Technic sets for a good long while. For a 10 to 16-year-old kid just getting into the theme, it doesn't particularly matter if the only functions are tried-and-true ones like a V8 engine and working steering, since even those sorts of basic functions will be new to them if they're just graduating from regular Lego. And ultimately, there's probably more of that sort of buyer for some of these sets (including flashy licensed sets like Ferrari) than there are AFOL buyers who already have years and years worth of Technic experience. That's not to discount your frustration, just pointing out that as a longtime fan it can be easy to lose sight of how even basic sorts of functions can still be impressive to certain people.

By the way, New Elementary has a look at some of the new parts from the Friends sets: https://www.newelementary.com/2023/12/lego-friends-new-moulds-for-january-2024.html

I feel like even the assertion people keep repeating that the locomotive was "an afterthought" isn't fair or accurate... it seems to be a rather well-thought-out locomotive design to me, with several features that I feel elevate it above previous steam engine sets. But then again I wasn't particularly charmed by the original Ideas proposal back when it got approved, and it was only when the finalized set was revealed that this set even piqued my interest.
-
Calling something like the locomotive in this set "Duplo-like" is honestly bizarre to me. It's a more complex, detailed build than the vast majority of train sets through the years. I guess you mean because it isn't motorized? But calling it "Duplo-like" for that reason is like calling a modular building set "Duplo-like" because it mostly involves stacking bricks—so vague and generalized as to be completely meaningless.

Does your Lego ever get damaged by pest?
Lyichir replied to ks6349's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Buy ones which ARE well made, in that case? With storage, as with many things, you get what you pay for—a cheaper box with a flexible lid may be the cheapest option but more robust containers with durable locking hinges do exist. And if you're intent on preserving high-value Lego sets, it's worth it to pay for more reliability. The size issue is harder to overcome, at least for the very largest sets, in which case something like shrink wrap might be your best option. But you shouldn't have to resort to that for all sets, since the majority of set boxes are small enough to fit into a good-sized container that's less labor-intensive than wrapping/unwrapping each box individually. -
In this case, it's because the Ideas proposal that was approved was literally based on the real Orient Express. There was no scenario where this particular set wouldn't be licensed.
-
Hm, according to New Elementary the mini-doll space helmet doesn't fit regular figs after all. A bit of a shame, but I suppose that will make it fit mini-dolls slightly better than it would if it had to be designed for both types of figs.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Or people just have different opinions? I built it with my sister recently, didn't find it boring at all. -

The sets and their alternate pictures are all on Lego.com now btw. The Never Witch fig looks fantastic—I'm glad characters like her, Sneak, and the Sandman who have already debuted in the show are making their first appearances in the sets! -

Maybe. Some aspects of this wave (fewer sets, few new villains or new molds, and possibly a cancelled set from the lineup) make me slightly worried that the theme might be on its way out (much like how several other themes have gotten a slightly lower budget for their final waves). I'd love to be wrong, but I'm also satisfied overall with what the theme has given us over the years if that does turn out to be the case. And either way I'm certainly glad that one of my big wishes for a mech for Mei is becoming real! -
Yeah, it's rarely used in regular sets these days, but remains available due in no small part to its continued use in education sets.

The large crystal rock piece there isn't new, it appeared in this Disney Princess set this year: https://brickset.com/sets/43215-1/The-Enchanted-Treehouse Though obviously you could still use it for space if you want to. -

Nobody's posted here in a while huh? We have official pics of some of the sets now: 80051 80053 I've started building the Mei mech on Stud.io to get a feel for it in 3D space—it really has some nice shaping to it. -

I saw a neat MOC at BrickFair Fredericksburg last year that did the former... used the trans light blue tubes, strung lights through them, and filled the rest with 1x1 round plates. They made the lights pulse in sequence so that it looked like something glowing was "flowing" through the tubes. -
Nice! I love the use of dark tan masonry bricks among the other yellow bricks for more worn sections, and the little apple tree is cute too! The jail cell and hidden exit inside the angled turret is also extremely well done and a good use of space.
-
Absolutely INCREDIBLE MOC! You've managed to "medievalize" pretty much every detail of the original set—no small feat since the original set is one that's huge and packed with detail! I love the use of metallic parts for the sword, the amazing techniques for the chain mail on the large statue, the clever chain-driven lift... the list goes on and on!
-
The new trans-black looks more like a tinted windscreen to me than the old trans-brown—I've rarely seen one in real life that had the brownish tinge that the old color had.

Latest impact of other themes on historic themes
Lyichir replied to Wardancer's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
New set pics mean we should be on the lookout for more historic/fantasy pieces! For fantasy/steampunk builds, I just noticed the Dreamzzz set 71477 The Sandman's Tower features a very nice printed clock face with exposed gears, as well as a new evil witch character with a unique hair/crown mold: https://www.brickmerge.de/71477-1_lego-dreamzzz-turm-des-sandmanns EDIT: Another piece that might interest historic builders is the khopesh in silver in some of the new Ninjago sets (for the new villain faction, whose parts might also be useful for some fig customizers). There's also a new dragon wing piece in some of the "gimmick" sets that comes in three different two-color blends.
