LEGO Monkie Kid 2024 Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Oh wow... very slickly produced Chinese ad for the new Monkie Kid sets: https://x.com/ririemimo/status/1742397395487637702?s=20 EDIT: Here's a version with subtitles: -
To be honest that's one of those scenarios where I'm glad it's stickered because this is that part's first appearance in that color so if they were printed they wouldn't exist in that color without prints yet.

One thing about the wanted posters that amuses me is that all but one of them corresponds to a fig in the same set—the exception being the prison island set (since if the crook from that poster was in prison, they wouldn't still need posters up). I got the interstellar spaceship yesterday and really enjoyed it. I really like the new aircraft bottom sections—similar to the 6-wide ones from previous years, but now with Technic pinholes in the ends to better secure them together into a solid base. The smaller rover set and the fire plane also seem to make good use of this system, though curiously the rescue ambulance still uses the old ones. My one minor complaint is that I wish the "blue team captain" in this set had an alternate hairpiece for when she takes her helmet off (something I'm more used to getting in themes like Friends that's sadly absent here). I'm not normally much of a City buyer (except the occasional set for my dad), but I'm definitely into the new space sets which feel almost like a fully developed theme of their own, with great worldbuilding and intercompatibility. They also have me more in the mood for MOCing than typical City sets, since I'm more comfortable building in more of a fantasy/sci-fi context where I feel like I can be less worried about "realism".

Yeah, I recently built the set on Stud.io (thanks to the newly released instructions) and noticed that it looks like the pallet could also be loaded into the module in the back of the rocket from that set. I also just tried to see if the space wheels I mentioned earlier would work for that little truck, but unfortunately it turns out they are slightly bigger than the wheel/tire combo used there so I'd have to at the very least raise the flatbed by a plate (and depending on how much clearance there is physically, potentially raise the cab by a plate as well).
-
Yeah, I'm blown away by how many cool printed parts this subtheme has! There are some sets with stickers (mostly the larger ones), but a lot of the small reusable details like the logos, indicators for the energy cells, and the targeting screens are all prints.
-
I was tempted to get it anyway since I wanted to make an order for the food truck GWP anyway (so the two polybags would've just been a bonus on top of that), but by the time I was ready to commit to ordering it it seemed like both of the polybags were out of stock since they weren't being added to my cart anymore. So I went with the Monkie Kid Megapolis set instead (since unlike the Friends set I can't buy that in-store during a better sale).
-
While I was out doing errands today I picked up the Interstellar Spaceship set! Great little build. I'm gonna save some of the bigger sets until I'm doing a Lego order or store trip.
-
The fact that they're featuring Ley-la so heavily is fun, though I'll admit I'm less drawn to those sets in part because I feel like the color scheme is less appealing to me than the much simpler color scheme of the 2015 Pop Star sets. Which I realize were now 9 whole years ago... dang.
-
Sadly I don't think the modules will fit the truck—the base of each module even considering the gap you mention is 6x8, meaning they wouldn't fit in either direction. The truck also slightly disappoints by having regular wheels and tires—would've been more interesting to me if it'd used 3486, which is about the same size, comes in black and feels significantly more "spacey". I'm thinking I might get the base set so if I do I'll consider swapping the wheels out.
-
Online stores are generally less likely to break the "street date" of sets, since they're much more centrally managed and under no individual pressure to stock shelves or anything like that. So usually if you want a chance at a set before its official release date, your best bet is to check physical stores.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I haven't seen it but I also feel like that kind of decision about WHEN a particular set would come out would not be made by the designers themselves, since it'd be much more in the realm of production/logistics/marketing/sales, rather than a design decision. -
LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
Lyichir replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I know a lot of people are probably saving up for the massive wave of Space sets, but if anyone is looking to get something else before the end of the year and hasn't gotten last year's Monkie Kid's Galactic Explorer set, I wouldn't sleep on it. It's currently 30% off on Lego.com and is an amazing spaceship set with some very nice colored windscreens. -
I got my dad the Orient Express for Christmas and started building it with him yesterday—so far we've built the track and one carriage. He and I are both quite impressed so far. We did have the reported issue of the metallic stickers having opaque flame yellowish orange printing instead of the metallic gold (which I'd assume on the "correct" stickers is supposed to be a less opaque yellow ink that lets the metallic finish shine through). But since that only affects exterior stickers, it's easy enough to leave those off and build the rest of the set while waiting for the correct stickers to come in via customer service. It'll probably be a couple days before we can get back to building since I'm dogsitting for a family member today and tomorrow, but we're looking forward to the rest of the build.

It might be at least a little tricky to replace the colors without substantially changing the build since the curved panels used for the "roofs" of each pod are new and so far only come in trans clear, trans black, and white. I guess the latter would work for Space Police 3 but you'd lose out on the appeal of vibrant transparent colors a little, at least until those new panels become available in more colors.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Lyichir replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I wouldn't totally mind an update of the earliest modulars, but I also think that (having most of them) they might not be worth getting for me. Which is sort of the issue for those sorts of rereleases—the audience is automatically sort of limited by the people who already have the older versions and are more or less satisfied with them. Whereas a brand-new modular has no such issues. Lego has also shown that they can sort of revisit the ideas from the early modulars in new forms—for example, the coffee shop in Assembly Square has similar signage to the Café Corner, sort of implying that it might be another location of the same coffee chain in another part of town. But I'm not so sure the other early modulars are as conducive to being downscaled or alluded to with such recognizable iconography. -
Action and Adventure Themes Discussion
Lyichir replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I think Adventurers is a little more niche than broader, more long-lived themes like Castle, Space, and Pirates. Easter eggs like this do hit the nostalgia sweet spot for 30-something year olds who grew up with the theme like several of the designers who have been responsible for these cameos (not to mention myself), but I wouldn't hold my breath for a full theme revival or anything like that.- 230 replies

[MOC] DreamZzz Santa's Sleigh
Lyichir replied to The_Fiery_Rooster's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Oh, this is a lot of fun! I love the bulging shape of Santa's sack of toys. Santa feels like a natural addition to the dream world. -

City sets are generally pretty great at segmenting their builds, including often having multiple instruction booklets so multiple builders can work on different sections simultaneously. It's an understated aspect of the theme that, combined with the generally simple builds/lower age grades, helps make them really nice for families to build together.
-
Surely you mean January 1st? December 1st has come and gone already. Already got the modular, but there's plenty of other things on my wishlist for the coming month (Ninjago, Monkie Kid, Friends, maybe even some of the City space stuff) so hopefully at least some of those themes will qualify for it.

It's the new Trans Black from this year (which is largely replacing the old Trans Brown). It's a very neat-looking color, IMO—which is part of why I don't feel like the windscreen colors of these new sets are a negative. EDIT (so as not to double post): Anyway, I've been looking at some of these sets (and building rough mock-ups on Stud.io) and I'm feeling more and more tempted to pick some of these up. I'm normally not much of a City buyer, but these sets are really well put together and the unique figure designs (including faction/squad leaders) really make this feel like a true space theme. Not sure which sets I'll aim for first if I do get some of these—the sets with the various "squad captains" (the dark blue, dark green, and dark orange uniforms with unique face prints) would probably be my highest priority. But the smaller rover doesn't have any of those figs yet I REALLY like how that's put together, so I might add that to my list as well.

To be honest seeing the skepticism toward the Twilight set from established AFOL communities makes me feel more like it was a smart choice on Lego's part. If established buyers aren't as interested in it yet it managed to get full support on Ideas, that suggests to me that it stands a good chance of bringing new fans into the fold. I'm mostly indifferent to the Twilight series so have no real interest in this set, but I do appreciate as religious as Stephanie Meyer is she has the good sense to keep her politics largely to herself and not use her platform as a successful young-adult author to promote bigotry, unlike a certain other author who will not be named...
-
If you get the Modular Space Station set it looks like it could fit on the same docking platform used for the "speeder bike" in that set.

Just saw this speed build review of the new Friends mansion set... incredibly impressive build!
