looking very compact. Wonderful that you can get the odd-shaped battery box in such a small space. I will also keep tabs on this project, IMO we don't see enough non-wheeled vehicles on here.... although we are making some progress! aka.... Jereon's recent jet post....

I have experimented quite a bit using lego pieces as fans/wind turbines. http://www.moc-pages.com/folder.php/198856 Still need to post at least one more build as well. What I have found is that ore fins = more speed of the propeller. Your recommendation would provide more torque, because it is so large, but more fins would be faster. Given the angle of your recommended piece though.... it might be perfect. I love this build. Quite clever. Reminds me of Theo Jansen's Strandbeest creations: http://www.strandbeest.com/ of which there are plenty online Lego versions that are PF powered. HOwever, I don't think I have seen one powered by wind/air.

[MOC] F14A Tomcat
nerdsforprez replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not a problem at all. But wonderful response nonetheless. We'll put the issue to bed and get back to Jeroen's wonderful build. -
Yup, you found it. This is just the final model of the WIP shared earlier.....

[MOC] F14A Tomcat
nerdsforprez replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Lox Lego I love your builds and love your contributions to the community. Your supercar builds are second to none and your have taken some building methods to near-perfection.. .. so take the following with a grain of salt. Your rational here is just plain incorrect. M motors, or PF functions period may have the appearance of being the most expensive elements out there, but a well-seasoned builder such as yourself should know different. Pneumatic pumps, cylinders, rare panels, hoses, hell, even the rare flex axles often cost similar if not more amounts. Technic is not different than regular system bricks in that if an element is desired and rare, it will become expensive, regardless of actual size, function, or cost to manufacture it (think about the satellite disk from the 2007 UCS MF and #3 red connector). Also, and this applies to other parties as well, part of being in a community is getting to know the members out there. Before any attack on Jeroen's pricing of the model was levied towards him, one ought to know a little about Jeroen. As a long-time, veteran member of the community one ought to have gathered that there is likely no mal-intent behind his pricing. He likely is not trying to gouge any buyers, has actually been a professional builder for TLG (therefore has a better understanding of pricing and what people will pay), etc., and is not guilty of anything those assuming the worst of his pricing are accusing him of. As others have said, he will not sell all his sets, and your reasoning that led you to your conclusion of him earning a million dollars is just plain error in reasoning due to extrapolation. I can see your frustration if the end result is making the guy a millionaire, especially in a community about toys. But as has been a well-discussed topic in the community now for years..... no one is becoming rich off this stuff, even the popular @sariel and his wonderful youtube channel. A few people will pay the price, and it will help Jeroen recoup some of the $$ he has spent in the expensive hobby of Lego building. Maybe even make a couple of bucks. Good for him. But we certainly aren't gonna see him on the front of Forbes' magazine any time soon because of this, or other Lego models he has created....... -
I think this has been shared before. Or at least the earlier versions of this build (this is the final version, we have discussed the preliminary versions of it before). This thread should probably should be merged with the former (if memory serves).

Many on the 2018 set thread have made similar comments about the mix of Technic and System bricks. Really, I don't think there are tons of system bricks, when looking at only the number. They are just very strategically placed. It does appear somewhat like a Creator set, or something similar, but I think it is less about the amount of system bricks as much as it is about how and where they are placed. Which... in my mind, is all about what building is about. So.... for my money, I love the look and don't mind the mix of parts at all...... -
Another thought was.... looking at the quick sketch provided by @agrof that would mean that two of the parts you initially provided would not be needed. You could get away with one, easily....b/c the actuator would provide the strength needed for the joint (by closing a triangular shape). However, thinking about what would be needed for the ankles would be a new challenge, as that would be your new area for potential weakness. Also, using a large LA would really increase the size of your purported build, but larger than 20-30 cm; you might want to think about how a small LA might work, if at all.
-
Here is another project I found similar to the one you are proposing. Using (2) of the very parts you will be using, and although not for leg configuration in a MOC, the angle and purpose of the build is similar. But also was thinking, just because you have a few Technic parts you are using perhaps doesn't make this the best place to post your question. Perhaps your thread might be better served in like the Sci-Fi theme or something similar. You might get more responses.

[MOC] Ghe-o Rescue
nerdsforprez replied to Engine's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is awesome.... welcome to the community. As the first poster of wanting someone to replicate the Ghe-o R, nearly 3 years ago, I think it is great that the community followed through. For what it is worth, I love your build..... and don't mind the connectors used in the doors as all. Thanks for the further details.... it was a good read. -
Thanks for sharing your estimation for the height.. but an estimate for weight would be more helpful. Is it a bulky, or not so bulky model? I built such a mech, using the exact pieces you speak of, two per joint, early from my return to the hobby. It was about as large as that you estimate yours to be (30 cm) and two per joint was more then enough..... and mine was very bulky.... if you cut down the weight a little you could probably get away away with only one per leg. Although mine did not have the legs as any certain angle..... I can tell you from experience that they are very rigid. The downside is that even with a motor, or LAs to power them, not sure you would get them to move with any fluidity. Even if you come up with a mechanism to move them, such a great force when they finally give way would shake the model to its destruction. I could pose and model my build, bend legs etc., but only with great effort. Often with one or several pieces falling off in the process. And as you can see, although it was a very bulky build..... for the most part it was very study as well....

Great find! As the original poster of this thread... happy to see that nearly three years ago it is now been solved. Any further information on the build would also be very much appreciated! Once the video of the competition is posted I will likely try to comment to find more information of the contestants. Based on the little looks that we have of it... I think it looks great. -
I am glad this has been front-paged. Well-deserving. In addition to what others have said, I think building at this scale with such a clever use of parts and maintaining functionality is that it makes Technic appealing to others. At this scale, TLG really could add a set like this. I know the pneumatics get messy, but if the AROCS taught us anything is that messy pneumatics don't automatically exclude themselves from official Lego sets. Well done....

Simple build here... only approximately 48 pieces. Actually part of a much larger build.... but I liked this part enough that I thought I would share. Mostly a Technic builder but every now and then I dabble with SW, Space, and Mecha genres. Much better pics on my Flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/photos/nerdsforprez/

The design also reminds me of like a Polaris Slingshot but obviously without the single wheel at the rear......

Ditto to what has already been said. Congratulations to All! Much better contest than I initially thought it would be. Some really terrific entries.

A review of the review..... Kidding, I am not nearly so audacious. But... a couple of thoughts about the review and the model itself. - The overlapping pictures and comparison pics possible with only a tap of a mouse is a spectacular option. Can't say enough good about it. Transformed the post from a simple read to an experience. I even dare say that such options are better than youtube videos. I love sariel, and others' reviews, etc., but in such a video-heavy world sometimes it is nice to read something, not watch it. In addition, when there are so many details, reading makes it nice to go back when something requires a review; much easier that trying to rewind a video. The option of the overlaying pics and comparison pics also allow comparison so much more readily than video. Absolutely spectacular. I hope this is an option that because standard in Technic and other genre reviews. I must say that I read every word, which in such a media-heavy world is not common for me. - My rating of the set is based on other UCS sets. I am not sure if this goes without saying, but it is never mentioned in our ratings on various sets on this site. When it is asked how you would rate this set, I think it is definitely apples to oranges if one is trying to rate this and other similar sets to say, something with only a few hundred pieces, or whose main audience is not adults. - About the set. I did not get the old version, and typically I don't get a whole lot of UCS sets. I have the tumbler, B-Wing, Imperial Shuttle and SSD, that is it. That being said, I do love the set, and even with the price tag, can see its value and worth. - Another thing I will mention, is that I do love the options. Whether or not I like stickers, etc. or other options is of little importance when I overall rate the set. I am much more impressed that TLG offers variety. It shows the thought that was put into it. I love to think that way. Anyone who has done their own MOCs, not just built official sets or others' MOCs will understand the absolute tremendous amount of work that goes into building a huge build such as this, and to even offer options such as differing versions, stickers, etc. is impressive. Thanks for the review Jim. You made for a fun beginning to my Sunday. Now I can go tackle the yard with not such a heavy heart

4x4 Rock Crawler
nerdsforprez replied to Toni-23's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wheels are spinning? Sounds and looks like it. As others have mentioned, wonderful build. And kudos for branching out and improving the electronics. I also agree with @technic_addict however, I think this is more of a buggy than a crawler. Even if your machine has the power, you don't want things geared up that fast. Too easy to spin the tires.....- 14 replies

9: 10 18: 6 11: 4 22: 3 21: 2 20: 1 Initially, didn't think this was my favorite contest, and have remained pretty quiet. However, after looking at all entries I see that there are some really fun and even ingenious builds. Thanks for the entertainment and education everyone!

Yup..... agree with this. In fact, I am not sure I have seen one of our supercars with so many L motors for drive. Very clever. In fact, in the opening video, at 2:45, if the video were slowed down I think that we may even see some peeling out. I am fairly positive we have not seen that before in such a large car.....
