Crane problem

age wins again. -
Thanks for the responses everyone. It appears that TC12 is a great way for everyone to celebrate Technic's Anniversary. Although admittedly, I missed out on any sets earlier than the 8070, I have done a little research trying to learn the history of sets and piece evolution. I did also pick up the Super Street Sensation a long time ago from someone, really my only Official Lego Set build with many studded beams. So much different a build than studless builds. Blakbird's site has been especially helpful. It is interesting to learn about changes in pieces. Not sure they are better or worse..... probably pros and cons, just all a matter of what you are building and your need. I do think that it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall in the board rooms when such changes were discussed.

Well, as promised.... I finally got some time to really check out this MOC. Wonderful job. The belly job is especially nice. One of the more involved belly-shots I have seen for a long time. Question: why exactly can it not drive? You mention that the diffs cannot take it, but also that it cannot drive fast (on the floor). Can it drive not at all, or just not fast? In the MOC I presented earlier today, and probably close to the same size and weight (~5,000 pieces, eight motors, two battery packs) I drove it with only one XL motor, and it drove fine. Not fast, but it drives. Haven't had problems with the diffs. Power to two axles, but based on your belly-shot, so is yours (to disperse the power). the only problem I had was due to backlash. The diffs held just fine, but it drives very jerky if I use just a regular Lego Controller. However, if I just the speed controller, to regulate the amount of voltage the motors receive, it drives, more or less, fine.

Crane problem
nerdsforprez replied to Dafgek81's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
So, in the project I just posted earlier today (Technic 40th Anniversary post) I revived one of my favorite MOCs. When looking at the battery packs, not only did I replace the batteries, but I noticed that one of the packs, a battery had begun corroding. Even after replacing the batteries, the pack did not supply much power. I had to throw out the pack. I am sure you checked for power in the pack..... but make sure there is no corrosion. I don't know how that happened, my set has been stored indoors. So..... to piggy-back off the OP's question..... anyone know how else batteries can corrode (other than moisture/weather)? -
So we have a thread where one can speculate what Lego will do for the 40th Anniversary of Technic……and we have one (or two) for the 40th Anniversary Chassis..... but my question is what YOU… personally, (if anything) will do to celebrate 40 years of Technic. Anything special? Going back to any favorite set/build? I still consider myself somewhat new to Technic. As a kid I was into Space, City and Castle themes, but never once owned a Technic set. Fast forward some 20 years, where I didn’t even know Lego was a thing for adults, and when school ended I re-found my Lego hobby. Only this time it was not in any of the themes I loved as a kid, but in Technic. 8070 was my first set back, and I loved it. But really, not only was it my first set back, it my first Technic set, period, so I really did not know any better. Since I have been back, 42009 has been my favorite set. Since my return I have built up a healthy collection, and therefore don’t buy many sets anymore, so I don’t have much opinion on sets in the last year (last set I bought was the Claas). But have to say, in the last five years or so, 42009 has been my favorite Technic set released. So, for the 40th anniversary for Technic I pulled my set off the shelf. Or should I say sets, three to be exact. The Grove thread had not started when I begin my MOC, and therefore didn’t have it to go off of. Essentially, I patterned the build off the Liebherr 1500 8.1 mobile crane. 8 axles, 6 steered and two driven. Used three 42009 sets, other pieces, for a total of what I estimate around 5,000 pieces. This is a project that I did a long time ago, as soon as 42009 was released. Although I have presented and played around alot with the lifting capabilities of the crane I have not presented other aspects or tested the driving, etc. It was dusty, not functioning, and needed quite a bit of work. I added some aesthetics, redid the mechanics and some of the electrical components (batteries corroded). The drive and steering had never been fully tested, though the boom and superstructure had, and I therefore set to making a little video of the whole MOC. Fun little project for Technic’s birthday, thought there would be no better way to celebrate it than re-live my favorite set (to date). Enjoy the video!

Geezo.....this one is gonna require one long stare. Rarely do I have 5he time to read and fully digest a moc, but this one demands it. Initial impression is fantastic. Excited for the video.

Indeed, very nice contribution to the Technic Airline Industry! Problem with doing an airliner to accompany these builds at this scale is that it would have to be super huge. Years ago I bought three 42025 sets and combined them (with my own additions). At nearly 4000 pieces I still feel it would be too small.

"So, comparing new sets to other, older sets of similar price point is illogical? "
Â
"illogical" is your word not mine. Sounds a little strong. I don't think it applies to my feelings about your posts.Â
And no..... comparing .....".." is not illogical. Again, that is not the issue. You are changing the subject. I will state it again. I just fail to see the point, as adults, critiquing sets aimed at children. Good design or bad. New or old. Period. That is just my opinion. You are welcome to yours, and I hope you don't feel censored. That is a crappy feeling. It is just that it comes across, i think, to others as a little strong. I have seen your brickshelf page. You are a talented dude when it comes to building. To take your skill but apply it to such small, young sets seems a little like the bully on the playground. I think that is the reasoning behind others (not just mine) comments about your posts.Â

Just PM'd you. Better to take this conversation off this thread so as to not distract from it. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion
nerdsforprez replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think you are missing a central point here. We are not arguing that Lego cannot be for both adults and kids. It certainly can and IS. Several thousand-piece sets with price tags of several hundreds of dollars attest to that. 7-11 sets versus 16+ sets. That is the discussion. Entirely different things here. Your comments are drawing criticism as they are directed towards certain sets. Can't miss this point. Also, you are right about your privilege about to complain about the sets. And others have the right to comment if they think it is somewhat outta place. See how circular this is? We could do this all day. No one made a remark about censoring your comments, only our own reactions to them. That would be the only place to draw the line. Other's have the right to comment about your comments and not be accused of censorship. Because no one recommended that. Some have asked for calming the negativity, but this was not directly solely at you nor trying to stymie your preference for a set or articulation thereof. It was simply a recommendation to calm the way your opinion was shared. Jim even gave an example of someone who did not like the sets, but voiced their opinion on a much more productive manner. Another point that cannot be missed. Ultimately, you don't like the sets. Totally understand. Not a problem. I was simply pointing out how I see the rationale, or lack thereof, behind how you made your decisions. I don't disagree with the criticisms of the small sets. I just don't see them in a contextually-appropriate place. Best way to describe my opinion, not directly targeted at you but towards the whole enterprise of adults criticizing sets meant for 7-11 year olds, could be summarized in the following example: Complaining for the lack of design in a child's Technic set kinda seems to me like an engineer from Porsche running into a Ford designing plant and begin complaining about how a Ford Focus is designed. Would he/she be correct in their complaints? Most assuredly yes. At the same time, would their comments have a very "wrong place and wrong time feel to them"? Hmm.... I won't say..... but it is something to think about. Personally, I just don't see the utility in flexing ones mechanical/technical muscles in front of a bunch of guys and guys given a task to build toys for kids. There seems to be an incredible lack of logic behind it. But, that is just my opinion. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion

Very well put. It's frustrating when some can't see this. I have said it before as pertaining to flagships: There are inherent problems in judging something meant for 16 year olds by full grown adults. Many of whom carry advanced degrees and training in design, engineering, mechanics, etc. Think of how much more this applies to sets designed at 7-12 year Olds! Forgive me, but this site is targeted at adults. I'm not understanding why there is so much chatter about the faults of kids sets. Even if they are technic. For some seven year olds TWO functions may just be enough. LEGOs job is to sell sets. As many as possible. And before anyone jumps to the "capitalist" complaints let me remind everyone that more sets sold means more pieces. Billions and billions of them for which we should all be entirely grateful. We would not have the hobby we do today, at least not like we now know it, if TLG did not worry about its bottom line. Remember, it was only about 15 years ago that TLG was really struggling. Really struggling. They are NOT immune to market forces. If catering to the needs of the general public (and substandard sets for a very select group of AFOLs) means flooding BL with new pieces in different colors.....sign me up.... -

The truck would have to be something like this, wouldn't it? Look at the background of the photo. All stacks of containers..... -

Ahhhhh....I love the sound of speculation.... -
Wow...it really could not hold much other than its weight....cuz you don't need much to keep the string on the pulleys, especially when using the parts you mentioned. The grooves are much deeper than the pulleys I talked about.

Love it when people take official sets and turn them into something new where you can see both the imprint of the old and the changes of the new. Well done. -
The first picture actually did not seem too bad. In fact, you really can't tell that the bottom is bending that bad. But down below.... I see your problem. As others have mentioned, there needs to be multiple layers of LA so avoid the bending. Was the crane in this position for the whole year? Or did you lower the boom to demonstrate the bending? If it was like this for the last year I assume those elements are ruined? Lastly, using the multiple pulleys is a problem with Lego b/c they have axle holes through them. In the future, either use another element, or drill holes through the axle holes. I did that with the pulleys on my own cranes, and they now work like a really pulley system. Efferman also sells the pulleys with a pinhole as well on Shapeways (but neither are purist methods so I save myself the money and just do the drilling). I still need to always have weight, in addition to the hook block, so they don't jump. Re-reeving the string on the pulleys is such a pain!!!!! But this is no different than in real cranes. In real cranes, hook blocks in some of the heavy-duty cranes can weight over a ton themselves!

Someone did something nice with 42025 !!! If anything Technic ever had a hope on Lego Ideas (I get it.....not likely) this is what I envision would. Great looks, great functions....this really is the whole package...... -
Coming from the psychogist in the bunch, there is a fairly significant inverted relationship between verbal and nonverbal dispositions. It may very well be that the ideal candidate isn't much of a builder at all.

Come to think of it.....could this planning of something huge for 2018 be the reason for an underwhelming 2017??
-
So they are looking for "a voice" to collaborate with for some Uber project to be released sometime in 2018? Do they know that we are heading into the latter part of 2017? Given that 42056 (which by most accounts was a bust) took four years of planning, collaborating, etc. something seems amiss here.......

This post reminds me of this one: i.e.... new member comes in and just drops something incredible. Love this build in that it is different, huge, not caring of aesthetics,...... just pure and unadulterated engineering. Well done. Looks like there are still some more kinks to work out, some of the function needed assistance, but overall--- so well done. Thank you for sharing. I hope there are more videos and information to come......
