  1. This is why I think LDD and renders are perfect for competitions like this - if TLG wants to position or pose an entry differently than photographed by the creator, they can use the file and either render or build as required. That, and I don't have all the parts in all the colours :D But creation shouldn't be limited by the plastic on hand.

Contest Turtle Contest - Entry Thread

This is a likeness/caricature of an Australian short necked, fresh water turtle. Edit - here is a link showing the turtle on an 8x8 display stand, for size purposes. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3856/14495119959_4411b6ecf4_o.png

    The Falls of Skara Kikos

Very pretty scene Takkata. I have the same question as KOLONIALBEAMTER - how are the bars attached/placed in the scene?
  4. so I re ask my last question - what about a rendered image of an LDD build? If the render looks like real bricks, is that sufficient?
  5. What about a rendered/ray traced image of an LDD file?
  6. Yea, I'll throw an effort in. My wife has some pet turtles, so it will be fun trying to replicate them in bricks and/or LDD :)

    [MOC] The Gilded Crow

Thanks for the comments. Making the sails look somewhat LEGOish was the plan SEBEUS, I'm happy you noticed. The overall aim was to make something that looked like a model galleon out of LEGO, so I tried to match the custom parts in as much as possible. CAPTAIN B - yea, you can do some cool things with the little bricks, so long as you gather enough of them :) Being from Australia, where LEGO is a rip off compared to the rest of the world, it probably works out cheaper for me to buy parts internationally than to buy sets. 2 things that made the Crow expensive to complete were the number of cannons (which I'm removing half of for display purposes, as you can only see one side) and the old brown parts (because I wanted them new). It's nice to look at the Crow now and think about where all of the parts came from - Italy, Portugal, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Croatia, the US and Australia. There are 2 of these elements http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?P=48336 in reddish brown, used on the back of the dining cabin chairs, that were pretty hard to find on Bricklink, and I found in a little second hand shop. The rigging rope was from a model boat shop in a coastal town (I was trying to match the LEGO brown). The collection of parts was as big of a journey as design and building :)

    Review: LEGO Ideas #007 Exosuit

Yea, that is true Mencot. The double sided head is a good idea - classic on one side and modern type on the other. Perhaps I'm just too old style with it :) . I don't mind the non yellow minifigs having a variety of faces - because they were developed during my dark ages, when LEGO was transitioning to that action figure style.

    Review: LEGO Ideas #007 Exosuit

The only thing TLG did better is the harness over the pilot - the original design is better in every other aspect. Why did they have to make a space girl? Classic LEGO space 'men' have always had non-sexualised 'human' faces that could be either or, depending on the preference of the child playing with them.
  10. Hi, I'm generally a system MOCer (don't hold it against me ) I don't mind using technic parts for functionality in my MOCs but am often out of my depth. I hope I have come to the right place for some help. I'm trying to make some retractable stands that work as a group. Here are the stands down. And up I have 2 main problems. 1. How do I include the front stand in the link? 2. Is there a way to make the stands lock in the raised and lowered positions whilst keeping them all working as a group? LDD file attached. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Spaceship stands.lxf
  11. Yes - you both had the same solution :) Sorry, I don't know techic part names that well. Thanks very much for the second file Bricktrain - it seems to be the most elegant solution that maintains the aesthetics of the stands - I could set up a 'fake' axle with that configuration that makes it look like the array is symmetrical. I guess I will have to build the array with some friction pins to find out how many are needed. I like LDD for planning and part ordering but it does have functional limitations. Again, thanks so much to both of you for your help.
  12. Thanks for your help. By #2 axle joiner do you mean part #6536 ( http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=6536 ) Captainowie? This part throws the alignment of the front stand out for the raising/lowering. Bricktrain's solution works perfectly, though does make the one stand look different to the others. The idea was to make and array of stands on the undercarriage of a spaceship that could be used as a playable feature. The array here has 5, with one offset as part of the design I was going to use them in. In theory, the array could be set up for any number of stands, of any size, on a model of various weights. The design I'm using it on is only around 400 parts, so less than 500 grams - but there is no reason the technique couldn't be applied to something as heavy as the UCS Falcon. Of course, the heavier the model, the more important it would be to make sure the stands lock in place.

    [MOC] The Gilded Crow

MATTEO - you can't see the building project of the ship yet, as the file is not the same as the final build. Also, there are some illegal LDD connections that I can't replicate. Most of the build is there - it just isn't sorted and polished to a standard I am happy with yet.

    [MOC] The Gilded Crow

Cheers for the piratical bloggin' and comments - she is up on LEGO ideas https://ideas.lego.com/projects/71552 There is an LDD file but it requires some work to get accurate to the final build. I would like to see TLG release a galleon set on par with some of the larger models like the Taj Mahal, Opera House, UCS Falcon and so on. Tall ships work well as display pieces because the relatively narrow width to height and length makes them easy to shelf.

Cheers CAPT. STABBIN. I think I got everything wider than 1024 pixels, let me know if not.

MOC: HMS Poseidon 2.0 (probably a Galleon)

I also like the colour and the little functional areas Captain. The sail plan would make the Poseidon 2 a galleon according to the classifications used on this forum, I think. A square rigged fore and main mast with at least 1 lanteen rigged sail on the mizzen mast. Galleons are the only ship types I have really been studying - there is something about them I just like. The Poseidon 2 has a beam for a largish square sail on the bowsprit, which is a 'classic' galleon element. The only part of a classic galleon missing from your build is the quarterdeck.

    [MOC] The Gilded Crow

Cheers SWAN and KOLONIALBEAMTER SWAN - I find the artistic work in Photoshop kind of relaxing - but yea, the initial photo editing, to remove all unwanted parts of an image is frustrating and requires patience. Truth is, I didn't end up with a single 'hero' shot of the whole ship that I was happy with. I like some of the shots of various areas though. Wish I was a better photographer and had some decent equipment like a green screen and a good camera - I don't take enough photos to justify it, however :)

    [MOC] The Gilded Crow

Thanks for the appreciation all. LTFALCON - the sails, ah the sails. My wife developed a certain disdain for this project because of the sails :) I wanted them to look billowed and be printed on both sides, with reverse detail, as seen here: First, I tried calico treated with gesso - as detailed here http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=87124 The texture and colour looks great but calico is difficult to work with, doesn't hold stiff for a billowed shape and doesn't print well on the reverse side. Then ISRAEL HANDS suggested canvas paper. I tried standard canvas paper and the stiffness and reverse printing were fine, though it was too white and glossy. I acquired a pad of proper artists canvas paper - the stiffness, texture and colour of this stuff was great but at 290 gsm it wouldn't go through either of my printers, it's still sitting there and I really wish I could use it. In the end, I settled on a medium tooth, textured, watercolour pad of 190 gsm pages. Here are the final images for the front and reverse of the fore course:

Gilded Crow - 22 Gun Galleon

I'm very close to posting the completed images for this project. I will start a new thread with the final images and leave this as a WIP thread. Sails and rigging have taken me longer than expected If you want specific LDD shots of anything from the build Hook, just ask and I will post them in this thread. The LDD file(s) are still different to the final model, so there is no point posting them yet.

    Lego 6286 Skull's Eye Schooner....Finally! :)

LEGO certainly doesn't make rigging pieces like they used to. Why don't they bring those nice triangular rigging pieces back? Better still, in dark brown with and extra width of rope.
  21. I'm working on a Pearl in LDD, now that the Crow is all but complete. Black boat hulls are really expensive - I'm invested in developing a Technic frame for the hull, that tiles can be shaped around. I find this music perfect inspiration.

    Aliens UD4L Dropship

Very nice dropship. Brings back memories of the film. 'Look into my eye!' Is it build in dark blue grey or light blue grey? The APC looks lighter.
  23. It's cool - LEGO's in da house :) it does look like the IFS colored black.

    Battle Mech

Hi all, My second MOC on Eurobricks. I designed and completed this build whilst working on my larger galleon MOC. I enjoyed collecting and building the LEGO Exo-Force line with my sons, though both they and I really wanted a more Western themed range, something more along the lines of FASA and the Battletech universe. The inspiration for this build should be obvious. It was not designed to be an exact replica, rather a build that pays homage to the source, whilst still presenting as unique LEGO model. The piece count is 520. The cockpit removes easily, attached by Technic pins. I have realized the build in olive and dark green. I would prefer to see the dark green replaced with dark tan, giving the model a more militant and 'earthy' feel, as shown in this LDD render. Not all of the parts required are available in dark tan. I submitted it as a LEGO idea model - because I would like to see TLG start a similar themed mech line and because it would be nice to get the required parts in dark tan LDD file: Battle Mech.lxf

The Courtroom from the 18th century

Nice details and a unique MOC - I don't think I've seen one before. Wish all the minifigs were flesh toned - I've got this aversion to the yellow ones :)
