Thirdwigg's MOCs
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm not sure this warrants another thread, but I made this little rolloff dumpster truck. The little homage to set 8065 only has one function. More can be found at Thirdwigg.com. Enjoy. -

@agrof Perfect! Now my head feels a little more stable. Those are the perfect parts. -
[TC11] Bison
Thirdwigg replied to agrof's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I love it. But every time I look at it, I get confused. Which side is the front? Which side is the top? Maybe you need to add some horns and a snout so my mind doesn't implode. -
This thread has been a true joy to follow. While the final result was something different than I expected when it started, I very much like the final design. It reminds me of some of the greats (8865, 8880, 8448); functionally focused, with enough bodywork to give it shape and lines. The suspension is well thought out, both front and rear, and is not missing any feature. The gearbox is stunning, and focuses on functionality and reliability, rather than flash. I was not too keen on the open wheel wells at first, but they really grew on me, and it matches the project better than any other option. This car is truly set apart. Regarding the presentation, I appreciated you bringing us along with your build; the challenges and the resolutions. It was great to watch this come together. It was great see all the many great ideas that contributed to the final design. I look forward to your next build. This will definitely end up on the Top 17 of 2017 list. Great job.

[MOC] Volvo FE Refuse
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Sorry to bump this thread, but instructions for the Volvo FE are now available on Flickr if anyone wants to pick up some small LEGO trash around the house. The part list will be posted to Rebrickable soon. Enjoy. -
[MOC] Crane Truck
Thirdwigg replied to Lucio Switch's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Oh my goodness. Yes! The crane was what I was missing with your dump truck. I'm glad the crane has been added, and the styling is stunning from the cab to the wheel arches. Great job again. -

Good to see you back and building. Fun little MOC. -
[WIP] Unimog U 4023
Thirdwigg replied to Victor Imaginator's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm always happy when I see a Unimog project. While I liked the body work of the 4000 better than they 4023, the movement of the engine was a good decision from MB. It will be great to see your interpretation. Keep up the good work. -
Thanks for the new contest. I am getting a little confused as I think about how the winner will be selected. Are we building the coolest robot, or the one that would win in a competition against other entries? Does one win the theoretical competition when the other bot is destroyed or immobilized? Will voting be based on the model or on the theoretical competition? Does the winner need to be able to destroy all bots (if there are 50 entries, won't it get tired? )? Maybe some info about how the voting will be structured will help me.

The spoiler looks much better now. It gives the car a little more visual movement to the rear.

No for the yellow or white. The blue looks alright and mirrors so many LEGO designs, which is a benefit to me. The DBG or LBG option would be great too. Especially if you go with one, and use the other as an accent color.

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Thirdwigg replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Hmmm, I like the creativity of all of them. 42069 looks interesting, but I want to know what's inside. The purple is great. I guess they might all be interesting to me if pricing is good. -

[MOC] Unimog U90
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@JJ2 the render is correct. The XL drive goes from a 8t left to a 24t gear (not down), then back to center from a 16t to a 16t clutch gear. From there two 16t gears transmit torque down to driveline, and one 16t transmit torque above the Servo to the I4. The poor obstacle performance is due to the backlash in all the gears between each wheel. Again, removing the portal axles may have helped.- 20 replies

[MOC] Unimog U90
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@2LegoOrNot2Lego... and @rm8 are both right; it would be better if the Portal Axles would gear down. I wanted to add portal axles to be more authentic, but adding reducing gears would add another stud of height in the chassis, and I was already getting a little too high at the top of the frame. Plus it made the smaller scale look a little chubby. The first draft used no portal axles, and considering all the work that went in to add them and how they limit off road effectiveness, maybe I should have ignored the authenticity, and went with a direct drive by leaving the Portal Axles out. I can't believe how long it took me to think about using studded parts on the build. I'm really happy I stuck with the green. It looks great on my desk at work.- 20 replies

[MOC] Unimog U90
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks. Keeping the wheelbase at 27 studs forced the funny reductions. I compromised the frame strength, but it worked. Wheels. Tires. Thanks, glad you like it. I checked the scale a bunch of times, hoping to get more room. Instead I had to keep working to find a better solution. @proran Thanks for your kind words. Glad you like the green. I was not sure it was going to work, so I'm happy I found some simple solutions. I should be more kind to the U90. It's a funny little truck, but each and every Unimog has a distinct look, and this one is no different. I should be more kind.- 20 replies

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
Thirdwigg replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It looks like 42070 is functionally more in line with 9398 than with 42008. 9398 was not very attractive but was build around the PF driveline. I wonder if the same is happening with 42070. -
Technic Pub
Thirdwigg replied to jantjeuh's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I would go if I had the chance; at least once. It would be great to have an attendee with a Technic mind to be able to answer many of our follow up questions about sets after the show. Rather than only pictures, I suspect you would be able give some input on the actual content of the Technic sets. It would be great if you could go, but that's mostly for my (our?) selfish desires. I also don't know what it will cost you. But you should go. -
Top 16 of 2016
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
All, glad you enjoyed my thoughts, and the MOC that were presented. There were some stellar 2016 builds. Re. the advertising at Eurobricks, I'll refrain from posting the information here without content.- 11 replies

There were many great MOCs during 2016. As is becoming a habit, and to celebrate some of Thirdwigg's favorite MOCs of the year, I present The Top 16 of 2016. Find out who won the coveted 2016 Thirdwiggy award. Enjoy, and feel free to let me know about your vehement objections to the list. Sorry for all the great ones I left out. Let me know what should have been included. Many thanks to Eurobricks for so many great designs and conversations over the year. I look forward to 2017.
