  1. I agree Flintstones in not particularly "on trend" with kids at the moment but in the UK it is shown on the Boomerang cartoon channel and it's one of those timeless classics that most kids would be aware of, even if they don't watch it regularly. Kind of like Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Scooby Doo etc. I do feel the Flintstones set would have quite broad appeal. It would be very poular with adults for nostalgic reasons, but it is also a fun, colouful Lego playset which I think would have appeal to children even if they're not familiar with the TV show.
  2. It's phenomenal to think he's designed this at just 14. Wow! I reckon that's true unless you include the young girl who designed this Friends set a few months ago.
  3. Well the Flintstones set in particular would be a big hit with kids, so it would make sense to have that out before Christmas.
  4. This model has got "Official Lego Set" written all over it. What a fantastic idea for a set. I'm sure this would be very popular and if I was a betting man, then my money would be on this one being approved. How strange - Nothing much usually happens on Lego Ideas during the weekend. I don't think any of the staff even work during the weekend as they only reply to emails Monday to Friday. Also as far as I know, new Ideas submissions don't even go live during the weekend. So I wonder why they have made a special effort to publish that interview on a Sunday. Is that by any chance the final interview from that batch of projects under review? I wonder if we might be due an announcement on the next approved set, either today or over the next couple of days, and that's why they pushed the interview through early.
  5. Thanks. I quite like the lighter green too. Last week I took the model to a Steam toy exhibition. It was displayed in a glass case under some LED lights and the brighter green colour really did stand out nicely. I would definitely prefer the spoked wheels to be red though. I was tempted to buy a second set of wheels and spray paint them red just to see how they'd look. The Lego purist in me is saying "no" to that idea though.
  6. This is a complete wild guess but a new series of Lego Masters will be starting very soon on Channel 4 here in the UK. I wonder if Graham who runs Brick Fanatics will be revealing himself to be a contestant in the new series? Probably completely wrong but for some reason, that was the first thing that sprang to my mind when I read the tweet.
  7. I agree. Overall I reckon a Lego set featuring a petrol station forecourt on the ground level and then 2 other floors plonked on top would look pretty forced and unnatural. Although it has been pointed out in this thread before that Petrol Stations like this do actually exist in continental Europe. I reckon a more likely scenario would be a workshop/repair shop concept of a garage. I'm finding this easier to imagine in the usual format of a modular building.
  8. I've made a few updates to the design of my LEGO Ideas model and have also made a brick built version (previously the images were just rendered). If anyone is interested in seeing how this looks when built from real Lego then please check out my updated topic here on Eurobricks.
  9. Another classic! As usual full of bright colours and interesting details, I'm sure if I read over your text and photos again I will find even more details I missed the first time. I really like the shaping and the way the colours all work together. It reminds me quite a lot of Klee corner, especially with that nice swooping shape of the roofline on the sand green central building. Think I actually prefer this to Klee Corner, although they are both really great so it's hard to pick a favourite. My favourite part of the model and the section I find most eye catching is the building on the left. I really like how the yellow, white and green work so well together. That Disco sign and striped awning really set it off too. Love the final picture with all 3 models side by side. They all work together seamlessly and this model bookends the other buildings really nicely.
  10. I really like how you've used a limited pallet of colours on the facade. I think when designing modulars there is often a temptation to try and jam in as many colours as possible but your model looks really classy and the details and textures stand out very nicely in white. Really love all the detailing around windows and around the roof edge. The little bird box on the back of the building is a neat touch too. As usual you've brought the model to life with your comical minifigs and top notch photography.
  11. Traction Engine - Brick Built Version Hi everyone. I've recently completed work on a brick built version of The Old Workhorse Traction Engine. I've had to swap some colours around to reflect Lego parts and colours that are currently in production. I've also made a few minor improvements to the design of the model which I will detail below. For now I've only built the Traction Engine portion of the set but I'm working on the wagon and other bits so I will post pictures of those too when they're complete. Apart from the colour scheme, probably the most noticeable change to the design is the new style funnel. I've redesigned this to have the appearance of a brass cap and a tapered shape towards the top which is more true to how a real traction engine funnel should look. I've also redesigned some of the details on top of the boiler, behind the funnel to appear more realistic and to give added stability. For the brick built version I decided to use a 2 tone colour scheme for the main body. The lower half is in earth green and the upper section of the cab and boiler are dark green. Unfortunately the spoked wheels are not available in red so I used reddish brown instead. I'm pleased with how the new colour scheme has worked out, it has quite a rustic look. My preference would still be for the model to be produced in the livery used in the original rendered model though, if ever it was lucky enough to go all the way on LEGO Ideas. I do think the lighter shade contrasts nicely with the gold though. Let me know what you think. Hope you like this brick built version of the model. Please feel free to let me know what you think. There are more pictures in my Flickr album including a short video clip of the model. If you like the model I'd also be really grateful if you could please give it your support over on LEGO Ideas if you've not done already. Thanks very much. LEGO IDEAS - Old Workhorse Traction Engine
  12. Funny you mention Fenwicks. Sadly the Fenwicks store in Leicester closed down last year and they did a huge sell off of all their old Lego sets and other toys. It was a real treasure trove with modulars and other expensive sets all with about 20% off.
  13. If the person told you it would be a garage I guess that could mean a petrol station. But maybe it could also be a repair shop style garage without any petrol pumps. A few years ago Lego released the Creator 3in1 Bike Shop and Cafe. One of the secondary builds was this small corner garage. I'm thinking if Lego did a corner Modular using the same concept of a garage as this then it could work very well. I can easily imagine a large scale version of something like this with other businesses working on the upper floors..
  14. As far as I know the turbine will be released November 23rd. This is roughly the same time that Taj Mahal came out last year. So my guess is that we'll get a new modular on January 1st and then another re-released set from the Lego vaults in November 2019. Whether or not that will be GG is anyones guess but I reckon they'll do an annual re-release every November from now on. What the heck are they thinking with that price tag on the turbine though. The theme of this set is green renewable energy but just think of all the trees that will have to be chopped down to make enough bank notes for people to buy this thing.
  15. Well now the wind turbine has been announced I'm thinking that probably rules out the rumor of a GG re-release. Surely Lego wouldn't make 2 creator expert re-releases in a row.
  16. Yes I definitely think this is true. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook are all great for promoting projects. Problem is that when you ask for votes a lot of people misunderstand and think you're just asking for "likes" on that particular site. Last Saturday I took my model out on the road for the first time I took the brick built version along to a local Steam toy fair and it was exhibited alongside some of non Lego models of steam trains, traction engines and that sort of thing. I received some positive feedback about my model from steam and traction engine enthusiasts many of whom were keen to vote for the model. However when it came to them actually voting things got quite interesting. It was quite a learning curve to see how non Lego fans respond to the Lego Ideas website. Many people were saying how much of a faff it was to vote and they just couldn't work out what they needed to do to be able to "support" a project. Some people were also fearful that by clicking "support" they would be obliged to buy the set or part with their money, especially when it came to the part where you have to say how many copies people would buy and how much you think it's worth. I do think the vote process is more complicated than it needs to be and this can definitely put off a lot of potential supporters. This new "activation code" thing is just another needless hurdle they've thrown in to the process.
  17. I'm not gonna hold my breath as it's not the first time rumors or a GG re-release have come up. I reckon a large percentage of people who buy modulars are long term collectors who probably already have GG in their collection anyway. So surely a straight re-release wouldn't make a great deal of business sense for Lego as they would be alienating many potential buyers who already own the set. So rather than a straight re-release I think they'd make some changes like a fully fitted out interior and up to date parts and build techniques. This would obviously bump up the parts count and size of the model which I guess adds wind to the other rumors from Amazon reporting to give the dimensions and weight for the box of the next set. Even so, it sounds as if these rumors are only based on a conversation somebody is reported to have had with a Lego store staff member. I wonder whether the staff in Lego stores would even know this far in advance about upcoming sets anyway. It's still over 3 months until January the 1st and although they'd need to make the staff aware of upcoming sets, would they really need to let them know this early?
  18. Not sure what to make of this. I haven't got GG so on one hand I would love to see it re-released as it's one of the best looking early modulars in my opinion. On the other hand I would hate to see it get in the way of a brand new modular for next year. It would seem a pretty lazy effort from Lego if they replaced one of their most anticipated sets of the year with a re-release of an old set. So I'm quite happy to see a re-release as long as we still get the usual new set as well. If they did this I can't imagine they'd release GG and the new modular close together though. Surely it would make more sense for them to have gap of maybe 6 months between each one.
  19. I assumed that was probably the case. I've been thinking of re-designing one of my modular buildings to bring it below the 3000 part threshold so I can put it on Ideas. It is only slightly over though so wasn't sure whether it was worth going to the effort of a redesign if other people have already got their models through with over 3000 parts. @parsom just wondered if you're still having problems with people voting for your project? Yesterday I did some promotion using Flickr, twitter and Instagram using a new video I've created of my model. This has received a big response with over 1000 views on instagram already. It's also become my most liked Tweet I've ever posted. I've had several comments from people saying how they really like the model and that they've just supported it. Despite this my support count only went up by 3 votes. Every time somebody said they'd voted, I checked the site and my vote count hadn't gone up at all. So I'm wondering whether people are just telling me they've voted when they actually haven't - or whether there might be a glitch with the site not registering votes correctly.
  20. I've just been reading the interview. One thing I noticed is that the designer mentions the model includes 4087 pieces. So does that mean his model was submitted before the 3000 brick rule was introduced or does it mean that Lego are pretty relaxed about that rule? There are a few models on Ideas that I've often thought look as if they contain more than 3000 bricks. If any of them reached 10,000 votes I wonder if they'd be instantly rejected or still considered for production. Also I wonder if the designer would still receive the 500 dollars of free Lego sets?
  21. Thanks a lot. Hopefully it might help to bring in a few more votes.
  22. Really pleased to say my Lego Ideas model is featured in another publication in stores from today. I have made it in to Blocks magazine featuring a double page spread and interview with me. This issue of the magazine is also a good one for Lego Ideas fans, featuring Voltron on the front cover and a big review of the set.
  23. Thanks very much, I'm definitely trying as hard as I can with this project! By the way the image above features the brick built version of my model. I'll be adding some new photos of that soon.
