  1. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate them much. I'm happy that you've found my article useful. It's gonna continue in next issue of Hispabrick Magazine - I'll share my tips for building Technic alternates. And about that contest - when I've found it, it was already closed... I had many ideas for improving plane too but I was not able to make them due to limited sort of parts. Finally I'm very happy that you can recognize plane in it. I was thinking about it too since I've found truck built out of this set. We'll see what else I can build out of it. After several failed attempts I've finally built helicopter out of set 31030. It features whirling rotors (both of them).
  2. It's been looong time since my last record here. In the meantime I've built several new alternative models. The first is polar bear built out of awesome set 31034. It is very posable thanks to many joints. The second model is little formula 1 race car built out of set 31030. Despite limited amount of bricks it has cool details like rearview mirrors. The third and last model is propeller plane built out of set 31030 too. It features whirling propeller and optional stand to keep it in the air. Development of this plane was pretty long for such a small model. Creator set 31030 has small amount of pieces and even less "ordinary" pieces so building was rather difficult...
  3. It looks very good. I especially like opening bonnet and front lights. To make it even better I would build rear spoiler smaller or at least not so long. I mean it goes too far beyond end of body. By the way how solid is it? Windscreen and roof looks bit fragile.
  4. Wow, it looks like alive! Good job.
  5. Not yet... Maybe I'll dismantle it tomorrow and begin working on it. If everything goes smooth you can expect it in May.
  6. I use mostly SR3D Builder - it is based on LDraw and it understands physics so you can build Technic models relatively easily in it. Just it has got one big BUT. Since it's author passed away there are lot of questions about its future. Now I'm using version 0.9.7.3 and I recommend you to use another one - older or newer because this one contains terible bugs. I also have experiences with MLCad - it is hard to use when you stop building orthogonal. And LDD is useful just for building some smaller Technic concepts like transmissions and so on from my point of view. It is not very usable for complex models and definitely not for creating instructions.
  7. Wow, you've built awesome alternate that is even more playable than original model. I'm curious how crane rotation works - would you describe it? I guess you've used some kind of crank.
  8. I dealt with triangles too when I was building my propeller plane. I made simple excel table where I found these triangles with right angle that are useful for Technic beams. Lenghts are measured between centres of hole so if you want lenghts in holes (number of holes in beam) add 1 to each number. Triples with * are not 100% correct but still works with Technic beams. 3 / 4 / 5 5 / 12 / 13 6 / 8 / 10 6 / 17 / 18* 6 / 18 / 19* 7 / 11 / 13* 8 / 9 / 12* 8 / 15 / 17 9 / 12 / 15 10 / 15 / 18* 11 / 13 / 17* 12 / 12 / 17*
  9. Cool idea for alternative model and you've made it great. It would be even better if you remove exhaust - it sticks out too much... By the way does that single cilinder engine works?

  11. Thank you for your comment. I'm happy that you've broken in my looong monologue here.
  12. Building instructions for all new Creator alternative models (except dragon) are now available on buildinst.
  13. It has been two months since I wrote last post here. During this time I've built 9 new alternative models built out of Lego Creator set 31017 (orange convertible). The first of them is motorbike. It was quite challenging to find the way how to connect front axle to rest of motorbike. Then I began building my first animal out of this set - koi karp. Next model was also animal - bird. It looks little bit like sparrow. Bird was followed by crocodile. This is very simple and cute model. Probably the most advanced alternative models out of this set are dump truck and forklift truck. I wanted to be the first who build truck with tipping dump bed but unfortunately Peter Szabo was faster. At least I was the first who built forklift truck. Notice clever way of using SNOT technique for building cab, mast and forks. I was not sure if it is possible to build train with bricks from this set till I've found picture of steam engine with only 4 wheels. One hour later I've got this little train. And last two alternative models are animals again. First is orange doggie which I've build in almost record time half of hour. Another one is dragon. Idea for building it came from my wife. You can find more pictures of these alternative models at my mocpages. I'm running out of ideas for other alternative models out of set 31017 so if have any let me know. I'll do my best to build it.
  14. You've presented several cool ideas and here are mine: 1) I like idea of contest and Lego could make it easily in this way: release box with bricks without any instructions or hints what you can build out of them. Then Lego fans would buy it, build something out of them and submit their creations into contest. Best creations would be realeased next year as main and alternative models of special set. This would give Lego control over prise of final set and make quite challenging environment for competitors. 2) If we speak about something new in Technic model portfolio what about animals? There were just few animals in Technic line so what about some big animal set like tyrannosaur from set 8485?
  15. WOW, this model is simply awesome! I can also remember this Jaguar from Need for Speed 2 even it wasn't my favorite car. It's unbelievable how many details you've made in such a small scale.
  16. I don't have more pictures of this plane but I'm very curious about its B model. I think it can be helicopter or boat. By the way when I saw this plane first time I was surprised how close it is to my latest alternative model - position of wings, V4 fake engine, moving ailerons. Just landing gear is different.
  17. I always like building process more than playing or just looking at finished model. Especially when I was child I appreciated B models very much because they extended time spent on building twice. I was also asking why they don't release 3 in 1 or 5 in 1 or even 10 in 1 sets. So my opinion is that B models give extra value or bonus to set and show you that you can build something else with same bricks.
  18. What a cool alternative model! I like that you've placed satelite inside cargo bay. How many set parts in percent did you use for it?
  19. I have many parts cracked exactly same as you can see at photo above. I don't think is't just problem of grey parts because connectors in other colors crack too. Most connectors and bushes are in grey color so you can notice this problem there most easily. I'm more disappointed with cracking plates and bricks.
  20. In my opinion it doesn't seem weird to have no connection between A and B model. I prefer two very different models without any relation between each other more than two almost same models. So the weirdest combinations for me are for example 8068 (two helicopters), 42020 (two helicopters), 42001 (two off-roaders), 42037 (two strange buggies), 42036 (two motorbikes) etc. In these cases it looks like designers from Lego don't have enough imagination to come with something more original than modification of A model.
  21. As set 8041 (Race Truck) coming back this year with new number 42041 I've decided to build another alternative model out of it. I wanted to build something totally different than oficial models so I've built propeller plane. Functions are similar to truck: Fake engine with moving pistons - I had to reduce it to V4. Steering - stick in cockpit controls moving of ailerons. BIG SIZE - it's bigger in all dimensions except height than original truck.
  22. Normally I build both A and B models before begin building my own alternative models. If I should mention some outstanding B models from my collection they would be these: 8053 - harbour crane 9397 - plow truck 8041 - stock car
  23. I own set 8041 and I have to say it's good set. Yes, it has limited functions but it has big part count and is suitable for alternative models. I've already built formula 1 and hot rod out of this set. Now I'm working on BIG propeller plane.
