I can't wait to see the build on Anakin's Jedi Starfighter, as a kid I loved the interceptor version but after clone wars I think the 7B looks like a sword and it's really cool, anakin's in particular has a wonderful color scheme and I think it would look amazing across from the new Razorcrest.

Me too. Certainly would like to see a new cockpit piece for a more streamlined version of the fighter.

I’ve been relatively disappointed with the JSF’s recently, they’re too blocky. Anything to make it more streamlined is a win for me.

With all the new slopes, curved slopes, and wedges since 2022 the next Delta 7 should be a night and day improvement over the last one (not counting Jedi Bob's version). I can't wait to see what the new one will look like, hope it won't be a disappointing simple refresh like this year's X-wing.

I quite liked the 2022 JSF, but one thing that irks me about the Etas is that they're just too big. I tried to make a smaller one, but without a new dedicated cockpit, they're a bit wonky:

I finally had the chance to build the UCS AT-ST after getting it months ago, and... eh. It's not bad, it's very well-built in places, but it feels like it's still a bit short and stubby for a UCS version of the walker. There's some amazing techniques in the "hip" of the walker that end up... not really accomplishing much in terms of detailing, which I think is emblematic of the set as a whole. A lot of very cool building techniques that end up making a still stubby walker that, unlike most UCS sets, is still very clearly lego even from a distance.

I'm still on the fence about this one. I'm generally not into the non minifig scale UCS sets but I really like the AT-ST as a vehicle.

that would be amazing, the interceptor didn't really need a new cockpit piece but this one could use it, or at the very least a print for the existing piece.

The war’s not over. We’ve only lost the next 2 engagements. But rest assured victory, and the TIE Avenger, will be ours. But then again I have been saying that for 430 days now.

I’ll also no longer be complaining about Clone sets. (Aside from the 2025 and price contexts). As of January we’ll have pretty much returned to era balance. I can now redirect all hatred to 18+ and Smart Play.

Is this “era balance” in the room with us? 5 OT, 1 PT, & 1TCW sets, but getting nothing from the ST, the spin-offs, the other animated shows, the Mandoverse, or any of the videogames, and most importantly, no TIE Avenger, is hardly balanced

Even pre-2014, this wouldn’t qualify as balanced since TPM and AOTC go hungry again.

If you can find it at discount, at the end of the day it is a big AT-ST, but it just feels a bit chibi to me.

I'll remain wary- this year the only two figure-compatible sets that weren't mando based went to clones. But at the very least, January 2027 has a good mix between OT era and PT era playsets and is giving us some non-clone PT era playsets, which is good news.

First off let's not pretend video game sets ever had a chance for this wave.

Obviously it's not the platonic ideal of era balance, but we're also at the point where they can't make a set for every single project. "3 OT era playsets and 2 PT era playsets" isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than "the majority of figure sets for the year are clones" or "all system sets except for two clone ones are mando based". Obviously it could be better, but it's already shaping up to be better than the last two years given what else we know is coming.

It is. They really could just throw her in an AAT or something, but it seems like our anniversary sets will be scenes/duels over vehicles.

I would remain optimistic that the battle packs are still the exception here, but yes, we've certainly gotten to the point where it's no longer optimistic to want battle packs to get better but simply for them to stop getting worse so quickly. Taking into account how few battle packs we get, I'd say value-wise the only good battle pack of the past few years was 2024's super pack, and I'm sure they'll never make that mistake again.

This disregards the anniversary figures, though. Two of these sets do include exclusive new minifigures, ones with radically different designs no less. (And the Y-wing likely does also include an exclusive new pilot, unless they're putting an X-wing pilot in the Y-wing set, which at this point... I don't know, maybe they will.)

Yeah, the set choices are fine by me. Still boggles my mind how Padmé is this neglected as a minifigure by Lego. No amount of Clone Craziness™ or TPM/AOTC set shortage can change that feeling. Only more various inclusions could.

Yep, that's what I immediately thought about the 2024 Super Battle Pack. For Lego Star Wars standards, it delivers outstanding good value. Too good to be true, I thought. They wouldn't stick with this price point any longer than they basically had to, I felt. So imagine my surprise (not at all) when the pricing of the 327th BP was leaked just a year later. Now supposedly this... depending on where you live, yet another 50% price increase. For the standard BP this time around, because variety is the spice of life or something. It's truly getting out of hand. I know this ain't exactly a mere Lego problem when literally everything out there, the toy business prominently featured as well, is getting consistently more expensive. But it ain't just due to the ongoing unstable economic environment either. It's a mixture of that and some unholy corporate greed. You put those two together and you're getting to the price points we're about to reach and already accustumed to.

No, no, no... I'm not trying to disregard the concept arts figures whatsoever. No disintegrations, you know. But maybe I do come across as dismissive about them to some extent. In any case, all I'm trying to convey is... As much as I'm looking forward to those minifigures and can appreciate the idea (that they clearly stole from Eurobricks) behind them, this shouldn't be some either/or type of situation. Anniversary figures shouldn't prevent any play scale sets from having what I would consider a reasonable minifigure line-up to stand on their own. Making the anniversary figure a true bonus inclusion on top of that.

I'm happy we're getting a wave of just episodes 1-6 plus Clone Wars; we've been getting too much Disney content. I feel like you guys are all just ignoring the concept art figs which will be super unique and obscure figures.

Look, let's just agree to disagree, then. What you would call "standard", I would consider as "bare minimum".

But the reality is, LSW does not need to do this. It hasn’t been looking to push the boundary on figures for a number of years now; the only thing I can really see that LSW is doing in this regard is the sturdiness of sets.

At the end of the day, I have personally felt for several years now that sets in practice haven’t been able to match sets on paper. But, no longer are my expectations mis-managed.

Perception of value is a good way of conceptualising why we need more risk in terms of figures.

I agree and disagree with you at the same time. Time and time again Lego doesn't move the needle any more than they absolutely have to, yes. But they're still, especially the last few years I felt like, delivering this element of surprise in terms of special minifigure inclusions. They definitely could have just included Obi-Wan and R4 in the Starfighter and called it a day, but they didn't. They kinda went the extra mile and made Taun We two decades after AOTC hit theaters. The thing is, there's just no consistency across the board with their output, because the design team has to constantly prioritize different things for different sets aimed at different audiences, which can make it a gamble every time a fitting opportunity presents itself.

Yeah, I'm in this weird spot between being cautiously optimistic and just trying to be realistic here... with the latter often feeling like coming across as more pessimistic as you're intending to be.

Putting things into perspective and discussing the perception of value is the key to all of this.

But with the leaks speaking of an "early TCW Anakin", it sounds like the actual General version that he is in dire need of a modern makeover. It just needs to be detailed as heck! So what we need is a 2025 TCW Obi-Wan situation. :classic:

Absolutely not.

For one thing, it's impossible to measure what "perfect era balance" would even be- I assume we aren't going off screen time, unless somebody wants ANH and ROTS to get fewer sets than Acolyte, but how do we weight movies against shows?

I would consider the best era balance to be the 33/33/33 rule I've stated before:

33% of system sets dedicated to the OT and heavily OT-related stories (rogue one, survivor, in general stories in which the empire is the ruling faction and they're using the standard imperial hardware)

33% of system sets dedicated to the PT and heavily PT-related stories (TCW)

33% of system sets dedicated to either the ST, Mandoverse, or content that doesn't fit in the first two categories.

A year with a new movie or show would have that project's sets eating into all three eras. Ideally we'd eventually get a KOTOR trilogy and move to 30/30/20/20

But that's 1: my personal view, as someone who isn't the head of lego and 2: still not something that would be hard and fast. It's OK for years to skew a bit from a good balance- I would say not to the extent of 2025 or 2026, but still.

Alright, come on man. You know my disdain for TROS and dislike of everything TLJ stands for in storytelling, but even in those films, there are cool ships and figure designs.

If they released a Black One X-wing today, I'm sure it would do well. Same goes for the silencer or the whisper. More unique designs like the bomber might have less wide appeal, but definitely still have people who want them.

Glad you're back! It hasn't been cold stateside either, I've never been so happy to live in an apartment with individually controlled AC. I can't imagine what it was like over there- I read AC isn't as common, and the home design in a lot of europe is built to keep heat in, not out.

Oh, I can answer that. There's a few elements of it. Padme doesn't appear in any action scenes in ROTS, which leaves her essentially locked out of the most popular prequel film in terms of easy figs to slot into sets. There is also the element that at the end of the day most of the kids buying star wars are boys and therefore likely to have male favorite characters. If you look at the movies, your only likely options for padme are geonosis sets- of which lego much prefers to fill with clones and jedi, and which we haven't had much at all in the past decade in favor of TCW-branded offerings (one of which ironically did still bring us a padme)- or sets based off the final fight in TPM, which we similarly don't tend to get.

Another big part of it is that, while other companies and products fluctuate prices based on overall economic environments, lego rarely tends to fluctuate them back down unless they don't think they can still get away with the inflated price. A good example of this is a lot of the early 2026 sets released at lower price points than initially leaked... but the battle pack stayed at $23 and is now increasing to $30. They know battle packs sell really well, so they know they can get away with it. The mechs, on the other hand, were a harder sell, and they actually had to lower the price from the initial $18 down to $15 to get them selling consistently. (Where they're still worse value than the marvel mechs, which are also $15 but include two minifigures)

I agree to some extent, but with the quote tiles included it sounds like these are a diorama-type gimmick that would otherwise only have included the duelists of each scene anyway. The diorama sets were hardly known for stellar figure counts.

Yep, that's the thing. I'm somewhat torn when it comes to managing expectations on a set-by-set-basis. For one set, I can keep everything in check and it's alright, like Anakin's Jedi Starfighter. For other sets, like the Mustafar Duel you just mentioned, not so much. While it's nothing extra to adjust expectations based on what sets have in store for you, it's sometimes tough to differentiate between being realistic and pessimistic. Making it a little bit more complicated to convey thoughts and feelings as.you, well, think and feel them.

No, we do not. It's impossible. Even if we had some sort of "perfect balance" on paper, like evenly split set coverage across every major era, in practice, we would discuss "why has this era got the flagship set, why has this theme no exciting new minifigs" and so on.

And yes, that's right. AC isn't nearly as common here as it is for you guys. And right again, european homes are usually designed to keep the warmth for winter... Which made a lot of sense at the time, since the heat was never as bad it was now. I mean, we just literally had the hottest June ever recorded. So yeah... incredibly unlucky in these changing times, I guess.

Well, okay, not gonna lie, it makes a lot of sense if you put it like that. The lack of action sequences she's in, the potentially incompatible target audience etc. Maybe that's my way of asking for a Geonosis Padmé... or anything related to that battle at all. And yes, the fact we got an updated TCW Padmé in one of them precious Clone Bro™ sets is even more funny in hindsight. You see, it's just crazy in a way that you have a main character (that existed as long as the theme does) with this many colorful varied outfits receiving so few official minifigs, even if you can reasonably explain it like you just did. You just don't see this with many other LSW characters out there. That's why I always called and considered the PT the biggest treasure troves of them all.

Yep, they take action to keep on increasing prices as long as they CAN possibly get away with it. But they only lower price points if they absolutely HAVE to. Which sounds like business sense 101 at first, making the most of it with as little as possible, probably is, but they're taking it to such an extreme level that I frankly find it absurd at this point.

Yeah... If those Duels are indeed new additions to the Diorama Collection, it changes my perception of the value at hand. You wouldn't expect the same amount of minifigures for an intended display piece as you would for an actual play set. Critical as I can be, especially when it comes to getting long overdue PT minifigures, I'm willing to adapt in due time.

You wouldn't expect the same amount of minifigures for an intended display piece as you would for an actual play set. Critical as I can be, especially when it comes to getting long overdue PT minifigures, I'm willing to adapt in due time.

It's such a strange culture shock type of thing, over here you can get a portable or wall-mounted unit for the cost of your standard kitchen appliance. (Which- obviously for a house you'll want a larger and more built-in system, but if you're just looking for a solution for one summer or live in an apartment, they work pretty well.)

The caped geonosis padme is the most damning missing variant to me, given we did used to get a fairly large number of geonosis sets and we've gotten the less useful injured version. I think if it wasn't for the fact that the clone frenzy was so P2 focused, we would have seen it by now. But maybe with it wrapping up (if it really is wrapping up, I'm not so sure- it got the only two non-mando system sets last year so going one 5-system-set wave without sets this year isn't super concrete to me), we can see some geonosis sets and they'll slip her in. A Droid Factory playset could also be interesting.

It's very smart short term but has some big risks long term. The more they jack up the price of a battle pack, the more they lose in terms of # of copies as it shifts to only being parents who can't tell the comparative value and army-builders/completionists who don't care. At that point the profit is never going to match up- selling 5,000 copies at $50 won't be as much as 20,000 at $20. I could even see the argument for making the small gimmick sets close to the margin of loss leaders- you might make very little profit on your battle packs or $10 sets, but now that they've got some nice shiny clones, don't they need that $150 Gunship to put them in? Don't they need an AAT to battle with?

Yup- of course we can only make assumptions based on the info we have. I do think that whether diorama collection specifically or not, the fact that these two include quote tiles and are the only two to come with anniversary figs implies they may be some new form of it. Maybe baseless dioramas- as nice as I think the bases looked, they certainly did add to the part/mass count a fair bit.

That seems like a solid distribution over a year, not necessary for each wave though. Although I do think a new movie should be more heavily weighted than a new show.

Are there though? Kylo Ren's shuttle is pretty cool, besides that... meh. It's been a while since I watched those movies though.

The Problem with a Black One X-wing is it's just a less iconic paint scheme from way less popular movies, with less liked characters. Kids today seemingly aren't interested in the ST either so it would have to be aimed at a pretty niche audience who wants to drop $70+ on Sequel merch. For the Tie Silencer or Whisper there are arguably more popular/well liked Tie Variants we could get like the Avenger and Defender.

I know there are some people who would like new Sequel sets, but I just don't hear as much demand for them. The passion doesn't seem to be there; I don't see people making Sequel trilogy set wish list like they do for the PT, OT, CW.

Day 432

My NR X-Wing came in today. Can’t wait to build it. Definitely an upgrade from my 2012 Red 5, even more so considering I broke it and lost a lot of the parts.

I'd like new ST sets, particularly a new Black One, but I'm not champing at the bit for them. When 75102 and 75149 were both on shelves, I got 75149 because I wanted the more "normal" gray squadron-builder color scheme, but now I regret missing the black-and-orange "halloween X-wing". That one really pops compared to the others! I genuinely liked TFA and TLJ, and even TROS had a fantastic lineup of sets when it came out. I guess as an adult, I don't have a passionate demand for ST sets right now because the ST already got very broad coverage when it came out, and I have most of the ST sets I'm interested in already. But that's coming from my perspective as an adult and longtime AFOL, not from the perspective of a kid or an adult who's just gotten into Lego. Also, there are so many PT vehicles and settings that haven't had remakes for so much longer that the time gap between 2015 or 2019 to now for ST remakes seems insignificant by comparison. Then there's the fact that my wish list is currently brimming with City, Speed Champions, Icons, SC-style Batmobiles, etc ... when my wish list is already way too long, I'm content for some other things I want not to be made yet, because then I can kick the question of how on earth I'll ever afford them down the road a couple of years.

On the topic of Delta-7b starfighters, I do wish Lego would deviate from the core build style of ‘central segment with two sides attached at an angle’. SNOT assemblies would help nail how sleek and nimble these things are supposed to look, but unfortunately when it comes to ship builds LSW tends to prefer small iterative updates rather than ground-up redesigns. 2022’s Delta-7 was a fantastic set though and very much a step in the right direction.

I don’t think the ST is as of yet undergoing the retroactive resurgence in popularity the PT enjoyed a decade in (although the lack of captivating content set during that era does not help), but if Lego did choose to remake Black One, Kylo’s Shuttle, the TIE Silencer, and even the TIE Whisper, I’ve no doubt those would all sell well. I still think it’s quite painful that they went through the effort of resurrecting a Kylo Ren minifigure just to act as box art for the buildable BB-8

I’ve been mulling over the January set list, and the more I think about it the more I believe sets like Duel on Mustafar and Bespin Duel will be a new ‘hybrid’ set style that isn’t quite a playset, yet not quite a diorama either. It’s quite telling that the absence of ancillary minifigures beyond the anniversary ones will mean these sets will be very scene-focused, and I think one of the leakers (Carterbricks?) said Bespin was very ‘tall’. So hopefully we can expect some good builds that act as the definitive versions of these duels.

Britain is built for rain and winter, It’s been like Tatooine here the last 2 weeks. But it’s on us for not heeding David Attenborough’s warnings enough.

Was walking through Thanet the other day and thought I’d come across some Tuskens but just realised it was the locals. Then had to go to a birthday party with my daughter and it was so hot I thought there were Jawas at the party but again they were just some chatty toddlers. For real blame it on the climate or the water companies or both but we’ve had two heatwaves this year and both times our town has genuinely run out of water. Had to get deliveries of bottled water. Britain is the only country that can have the weather of Hoth, Tattoine, Kamino, Naboo sometimes all in one week.

Was quite a pleasant build imo. Fairly similar to the first downscaled R5 from a few years ago.

Did anyone pick up the lambda shuttle today? Got insiders days coming up and I want the Castle GWP that’s coming and I’m undecided on whether to get the shuttle or the razor crest

Oh yeah, I get some cultural shock with some of you guys all the time. Three words: american cooking videos. Of course being fully aware there's generally a difference between America and U.S.A. And even then a lot of things *caugh* taxes *caugh* do vary by state. But phew... there are some mighty fine differences between the US and Europe.

As far as my wishful thinking department inside my mind palace goes... Geonosis Padmé is coming in either a MBS style or Yavin 4 larger playset kind of Petranaki-Arena. One sticker, serving as an easter egg, from the UCS Death Star actually depicted her in this outfit. They always tease the next big thing in The Lord of the Rings theme via those Palantir printings. Would be cool to see this more often or at all for Star Wars. Other than that, given that next year's set coverage considerably revolves around special circumstances, I don't think we know for certain whether the Clone Extravaganza™ truly ended until at least 2028.

Yep, exactly. It will bite them back full force eventually. The Lego group nearly went bankrupt in the early 2000s and only avoided it by completely reversing ship and making some smart, if overdue, decisions. This will happen again if they push their luck too far.

It's just every once in a while you witness the return of some long lost themes and their pricing is so far removed from we're used to by now. Remember the Indiana Jones revival just a couple years back? Have you seen these genuinely reasonable prices? For a licensed theme, if I'm not completely wrong also owned by Disney by now, no less. It truly felt like living in another timeline.

Yeah, we just judge and speculate stuff as we move along and see fit. And I would be eager to see some updated design for the Diorama Collection. Getting rid of the bases altogether could prove to be a great move. Now if only we could actually end up getting some more exciting minifigures. Not necessarily talking about the sets we're getting. Like we said, if they end up being no play sets at all, it recontextualizes things. But other possible sets. Like two sets for finally getting a new Dooku alone.
