If the new stuff doesn't get sets anymore it's all remakes forever. If they play the hits, there's no risk of failure, right? This movie has nothing going for it nostalgia-wise, and even with Ryan Gosling, who knows how it'll perform critically and financially. It's an untapped era… and the two previous times that happened in Star Wars were the Mandalorian and the Acolyte. (Ugh, I feel bad breathing those two in the same sentence.) For the former, it got one set—a redundant remake at that, and as for the latter, obviously it didn't perform well, and I think TLG avoided a shelf-warmer with that one. We'll see the set potential of Starfighter upon the trailer release, so I'll hold my tongue for now. In the short term there's low chance of failure. But I think this consistent lack of risk-taking turns people off long term. You already see on this board the people who have been collecting for a long time underwhelmed by this Jan wave because they already have the stuff. I think playing it safe too long eventually becomes a risk in and of itself. Quote

I guess I had expected some Death Star figs or a Shlup Gitto Rebel. I wouldn't mind a new Y-Wing pilot, especially if it's one seen onscreen in ANH. My thought was that we hadn't seen Biggs or Wedge in a minute and (thus I don't have them and I'm just greedy) so that'd be nice. In every economy. Everywhere. All at once. (Legit, I thought up until now that Potential Man was a riff off Henry Cavill's Soup. So this is a whole canon with which I'm unfamiliar…?) The Rebels Crew, perhaps; Ahsoka had the most unnecessary change in my opinion considering she was better off mentally in Book of Boba than in Ahsoka. Hera seems toned down in personality, Chopper is of course Chopper, I forgot about Zeb since he wasn't in the show but he is indeed perfect, and I don't know how you felt about Kanan, but to me he just felt… dead, you know? Of course, the Y-Wing would need to be bigfig-accommodable… in fact, we'd need a whole new line of remade starfighters that can fit a new lineup of SW bigfigs. Obviously the first wave would be a TIE Advanced with bigfig Vader, a Millenium Falcon with a new canopy for bigfig Chewbacca (Han stays the same)—strike that; why go for all that effort when they can instead slap a "Smart Play Compatible" on the box and call it brand-consistent? Long live the Aslume. Agreed. At least the grey version of the MTT made some people happy… I think this Sandcrawler could've been brown and nobody would crying that it wasn't grey. I mean, I wasn't going to say it outloud… but what are the chances LEGO just recolours the current Vader mold? Well, McQuarrie did a particular artpiece that featured Jedi Han Solo, Zebbacca, and female Starkiller (Luke wasn't renamed Skywalker until the day of filming). I don't remember if Leia was included in any concepts during that stage. There's one black-and-white sketch that was adapted into Rebels, so maybe LEGO could go for that? Good point about Starkiller being highly merchandised over the years. It'd certainly be odd if TLG didn't go for him now. At this point, Mando- while not nearly as bad- does have an interesting parallel to it. Mando's current state is the result of being too safe and corporatized, making it feel like the show was produced by accountants rather than showrunners. Acylote was the result of taking some bad risks and giving the showrunner too much control. A story like TMAG doesn't work because it simply has nothing going on- it's too safe, they don't try anything. Characters from other stuff show up to remind you that they exist, but nobody does anything, nobody grows as a character. (I'll again say, at the very least, Mando should have painted his armor.) With Acolyte, they tried the wrong things, and let the showrunner do things that hurt pre-existing stories, concepts, and characters. It leads to slightly different outcomes- people will forget TMAG, while acolyte will be notorious- but in both cases it's a financial loss for the studio and a critical failure with existing fans. I wouldn't mind either of them, but I think the best move is a glup shitto Y-wing pilot like Dex or Ryle. (And then both biggs and wedge in a trench run set?) Oh- no, it originally comes from a show/comic called jujutsu kaisen. One of the characters, Megumi, is constantly built up as having the potential to be one of the strongest in the show, but at least for the first few seasons doesn't really live up to it, hence the original meme, which put his face on superman's body alongside various jokes/memes about the discrepancy between what we're told he'll eventually be able to do and what he actually does. Phoenix from X-men adopted this template as well, with a focus on how in the comics she and/or the phoenix force is constantly dying and coming back to life, and of course now it's pretty widespread for any character that's considered a fraud or overrated. So it probably has wrapped back around to just straight-up Henry Cavill Superman, though much like the original potential man meme I actually liked his character too. That's probably true about Ahsoka, but I just sort of considered it her getting older and more mentor-like as time went on, especially after she turned into Ahsoka the White. She probably is the worst offender translating to live action- I think Rosiario Dawson is good in other stuff but miscast- but as I've said before Ahsoka is the least interesting character in the Ahsoka show to me. I preferred the final episodes where she really did become a gandalf the white style character and Ezra and Sabine took focus. It would be really funny if lego started putting smart play compatible stickers on all the boxes for the normal sets because it's all the same system and therefore you can attach the smart brick to any set. True. I think you lose a lot of the "but we had X before (almost a decade ago) why couldn't it be a different color" crowd when the different color is actively more boring. (Though the more I look at it the more I do like how it looks.) It's certainly possible, but I'm going to hold out hope on this one. The anniversary figs have had new molds before and star wars is generally pretty good about giving us new molds when a character needs one. The bigger concern for me is that that'll be the ONLY change- it needs at the very least navy blue lines instead of grey ones, but I'd personally like to see navy robes. I guess they could just call her mcquarrie Leia and then also do the hallway fight Starkiller as Luke, but the female starkiller is the least interesting design to me given they've basically done slight recolors to that outfit for canon Leia costumes. It's not like Vader or Stormtrooper where there's something that just feels unique and non-canon about it, or Han/Luke/Chewie where it's just a completely different guy. (C-3PO and R2 don't interest me much either for the same reasons) 1 hour ago, RyansRebuid said: In the short term there's low chance of failure. You already see on this board the people who have been collecting for a long time underwhelmed by this Jan wave because they already have the stuff. I think playing it safe too long eventually becomes a risk in and of itself. You're certainly going to get a minority of fans who already have the old versions and don't view the new ones as a good enough update, but it is a minority. Many toylines have 3 year cycles, because it's considered that's how long the average kid stays into the theme. There's a reason we get new X-wings and TIEs so often, it's because there are constantly new fans moving into the target age range (and increasingly new adults coming back who've lost the sets they had as kids), and lego wants to make sure they can get ahold of the most iconic vehicles. Now, that's nothing to say they can't throw in some new obscure characters to bait people who already own the prior versions of the set- nobody's saying these sets wouldn't be better if they included additional minifigures- but the current january wave isn't very risky and will probably do quite well (Hopefully except for endor). All these sets haven't been done in 6-10 years, so it's not like they were just on shelves. And of course there ARE some exclusive new figs here with the mcquarrie characters, and possibly a new pilot as well. For January, unless the builds are bad, this really is our best wave since they shifted into the modern era. Quote
CloneCommando99 Posted June 26 Posted June 26 This heat plaguing Europe is obviously divine retribution for Lego not making a TIE Avenger yet. Weird how we’ve heard nothing about Ahsoka S2 sets yet. It was originally supposed be released this year so one would assume Lego’s got some prepped and ready to release around Jan-March and therefore have leaked with this wave. That is unless… there are none. But hopefully it’s just they’re releasing stupidly later in 2027. Quote

Duel on Mustafar in 2005 had only two, but that was because those were the only two we knew were going to be on Mustafar. Meanwhile Duel on Mustafar in 2020 was $20 and, again, only two figures but at half the price of this new version. It was interesting to look back on the pricing of Jedi Starfighters; a trend of price increases that's very similar to today until it dropped back to $20 in 2018. At least back in TCW era we got more builds and/or minifigs with each price increase (Plo Koon's SF being the exception); whereas just in 2022 we got a $30 SF with three all new figs (considering R4 as a fig for the sake of it), only to now expect a reused R2 and a hopefully deluxe Anakin. It's better than $45 for an Interceptor, certainly, but still feels stingy. The trouble is we get tons of Anakins and Obi-Wans, and while we certainly need those characters to return regularly, I'd like to see a different cast each time to interest me in collecting. The lack of minifgs offers no suggestion of imaginative play too. I imagine an all gold or black greebles and gold banner box-art with the "Star Wars at 50" logo as seen on StarWars.com. The McQuarrie figs seem like a novel way for TLG to celebrate and only that. The approach for branding this 50th anniversary seems pretty straight forward and formulated, for better or worse. Do we know if the new Bespin and Mustafar duels are playsets or diorama's? I though the rumor was they were going to have display quote plaques like the diorama sets. If they are dioramas then it makes sense for only figures in the scene to be included. If the lack of a third minifigure in the JSF allowed them to keep the price down then I don't mind too much. Yeah that seems likely. 1 hour ago, Mandalorianknight said: I think this is the one thing we can count on lego to do well. They've been hitting it out of the park with the box art recently. The playset key art is fine but I wish they'd bring back the actual characters sometimes instead of the Lego versions of the characters. For the Revenge of the Sith anniversary sets it would've been cool if they brought back the Vader Lava key art from 2005. Quote

Unfortunately I think it's an issue of Lucasfilm not having effectively communicated this show's release date. We still don't know when it is. It's possible they have drafts in the wings and are waiting to hear when the show will actually be released... it's also possible they decided to avoid an eternals situation and we won't see anything around release since they didn't/won't have time to put stuff into production when Lucasfilm finally sends out a release date. Kaijumeister Posted June 27 Posted June 27 (edited) I’d argue the 2019 - 2021 black and white box art (or accurately box banner - box art specific to system sets has always been fantastic) of Lego greebling and minifigure art representing a set’s source content was the worst. (Smart X-Wing was brought down £10 from its initial rumoured price point, and then there’s the question of how come so many desirable 2026-7 sets ‘accidentally’ leaked within an hour of Smart Play reveals. I believe TLG (after years of court battles, lol) has realized that the minifig is their one instant distinction from their brick-competitors. There's honestly not much difference between a brick from Billund or not, but the minifig has gained its status as a legitimate collectible. So with Ninjago versus Star Wars, it's almost as if an action figure company has both licensed and original characters on shelves; obviously the licensed has better recognition, so the non-licensed line has to offer better value for each figure and/or bundle those figures together. Mmm, I think so. Quote

In this case and this case alone, the build will absolutely make or break this set for me. Speaking of which, I'm intrigued to see how the greebling will be accomplished this go around, what with all the new odd pieces at their disposal. I learned about it from the behind the scenes stuff after seeing the M&G movie and it's a very cool tribute to an obscure model that was never used in ANH, but finding out it was never used in ANH and the recent figure rumors has me a little worried they are just going to do gold leader again. I was looking at the color scheme, and it seems like a toy version of the color scheme would be a really interesting mix of reds/greys/yellow/white and then copper greebling, it would look amazing in my opinion. I thought the Y-wing for TROS looked cool, but I am also wondering how this new one's build will look. I can't wait to see the build on Anakin's Jedi Starfighter, as a kid I loved the interceptor version but after clone wars I think the 7B looks like a sword and it's really cool, anakin's in particular has a wonderful color scheme and I think it would look amazing across from the new Razorcrest. I think the OT will sell better than a Mando and Grogu version, unless they released good figures. Quote
