Mandalorianknight Posted July 4 Posted July 4 (edited) 9 hours ago, BrickBob Studpants said: The „icons of SW“ set sounds interesting, but in a way also pretty similar to the rumoured poster set. I guess the latter will be directly based on an existing poster like the classic ANH one while the former is more of a pastiche? I think it's minifig vignettes, like little environments for each figure. The really interesting part is it's an 18+ set in which the minifigures are the central focus, not there because the diorama wouldn't work without them or just entirely absent. 7 hours ago, Llewop said: I’ve seen comments on Reddit commending hiding a figure like that in that kind of set. Which is such a weird take. I would guess they either think it was the only way to "sneak in" Malak, which I think is just objectively wrong given we got Cal in an ISD, or they think putting the fig in a non-minifig set allowed them to up the budget alloted to the figure, which is somewhat reasonable. (Though if we could have gotten a Malak in a smaller system set and he just re-used the Ultron neck bracket or something I would have been fine with that. It works for my custom Malak anyway.) 6 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: Happy 250th Birthday to the USA. The new display set sounds more promising than its usual brethren. Anniversary figures i can see happening in addition to the ones we know: Chewie TPM Obi-Wan Darth Maul? That’s it. I don’t think there is much more space in the year with Starfighter, the TIE Avenger and Ahsoka S2 WOOOOOOOO! (The TIE Avenger did cause some spectacular fireworks in the show) For me it's less about the set itself and more about what it means- it sounds like an 18+ set actively focused on minifigures, which would imply lego has finally realized that minifigs won't scare off adults from buying sets. This is a potential game changer. I think a TK trooper or other ANH concept art figs are more likely then the latter two there, like female starkiller, the uniformed vader, etc. Everything we've seen so far is from ANH concept art, I wonder if they'd want to save later films' mcquarrie designs for later. (Would be funny if 25 years from now we get a set of AOTC annivesary figs and it's just a republic commando and 5 radically different pieces of Dooku concept art) I'm starting to get worried about Ahsoka S2's potential sets. 5 hours ago, Meaf said: The January wave having more anniversary figures is nice, definitely explains the otherwise meh minifigure line-ups. I do wonder if we'll get any others, hopefully so since so far they're the most interesting part of the 2026 sets. Chewbacca makes way too much sense not to do, seeing as how they already have the head mold in-production. I will say though, why do they keep including exclusive minifigures in buildable figure sets? I would have figured that the people buying the buildable figures tend not to care about minifigs as much, but I suppose the intention might just be to get people who wouldn't buy them normally to pick it up. Idk it's just annoying. I think at this point this is the best january figure lineup of the modern era. I don't know what would even compete with it. That's exactly it. Minifig-hunters who otherwise wouldn't buy a giant buildable Luke Skywalker will now want to pick up the set anyway so they can get the mcquarrie vader. I hope that set crashes and burns so we can pick up the vader minifig for cheap later on (and because while it's entirely hypocritical, as I loved sets like the rebel scout speeder remake, the maxifigs may be my single least favorite set type lego's ever made for this theme. It feels paradoxical- I have a Luke Skywalker minifigure because I like legos as a medium and I like star wars as an IP. Something like the boba fett statue is cool because it's a boba fett made out of legos. A lego luke skywalker made out of legos feels like something that should be a niche legoland product, not taking up a mainline slot. I would- somehow- even prefer the statues to them.) I don't think it necesarily implies anything, given the same one also includes a Naboo colored N-1, Anakin's podracer, an Aayla poster and the skyhopper, but it does show that lego at least remembers that design. Though I'd still prefer the caped variant. There was also a cheeky little nod from one of the lead minifigure designers when asked about this particular Padmé sticker and the possibility of a Geonosis based set in the foreseeable future, hence why I mentioned it. It can obviously mean anything. On 7/3/2026 at 1:46 AM, Mandalorianknight said: They've already seemingly run into the wall with the smart sets, given they're all retiring early. Which is fantastic news as far as the Star Wars theme is concerned. It's like I said... We need Lego to be smart about dumb sets, not the other way around. On 7/3/2026 at 1:46 AM, Mandalorianknight said: Yup. The indiana jones sets were remarkably reasonably priced despite also being entirely owned by disney, probably in big part because that brand isn't as strong. They're good movies (I mean, a good trilogy. Could you imagine if they tried to make 4th or 5th ones?) but they aren't a universe in the same way superheroes or star wars are. It truly felt like party like it was the 2010's. Just fascinating how the price discrepancy can be this huge between different licensed themes. You end up wondering whether this was on purpose or someone just left the wrong elevator or something. And I could never imagine them ruining a cult classic trilogy such as this. And I hope neither could holy Hollywood! On 7/3/2026 at 1:46 AM, Mandalorianknight said: This is, I believe, one of the reasons that lego tries to control leaks so much. If some of your fans' first impression of a set is a blurry prototype, they aren't going to like it as much as if they'd first seen the official reveal. Yes, that has to be the case to some extent. People fear the unknown. Or in the Smart Play™ case... they tear it apart. So you better have some actual exciting news up your sleeve for some good old damage control to soften the incoming blow. On 7/3/2026 at 1:46 AM, Mandalorianknight said: I think that we can be reasonably confident that these two sets are part of the same subtheme. Now, the idea that the rest of the mcquarrie fig sets will also be duels is an extrapolation from only two sets, but I think there's at least a shot of it being true. And if it is, Yoda vs Dooku is one of the most logical choices remaining. Yeah, these two Duel sets probably go hand in hand at this point. While the shot of anniversary figures being only included in those type of sets is out of the window by now, so too does it make the Yoda vs. Dooku set, long overdue and logical as it definitely is, less likely to show up. Even though two AOTC sets releasing in the same year were pretty unlikely to begin with. Would obviously love to be wrong on this one. 20 hours ago, Meaf said: I will say though, why do they keep including exclusive minifigures in buildable figure sets? Idk it's just annoying. Yep, you already answered your own question. It's not about enticing non-Lego people who don't care about minifigs in the first place. As you already have this casual crowd in the bag with those type of sets. It's to tempt the more seasoned collector's of the theme to buy something they don't want or need just for that single exclusive minifig. They basically want to kill two birds with one stone. And yes, it's absolutely annoying when you're more on the latter side of things. Edited July 5 by BrickPrick Quote

I feel like the dioramas were moreso an example of a subline lego was trying that had to include minifigures despite their best wishes/efforts. This sounds like the first one where the focus is actively on the minifigures, rather than lego doing a diorama collection, having to include minifigures to complete the scenes, and then ending it with a figless one anyway. Hopefully. Dude, not the hat- iconic hats are clearly what give IP franchise runners their power, without his hat the brand is doomed. 5 hours ago, Kaijumeister said: I’m going to paraphrase Laszlo from What We do in the Shadows, but Lego really are the most devious b******* in New York Cit-I mean Billund. If the general audience isn't being shown it, they aren't going to remember to go see it. Similar with the theories- it gives the fans something to obsess over and get hyped for. And if you don't want to engage with it, you don't have to. (Though at the end of the day that's not something that needs a big campaign to happen- starfighter already has plenty. Arguably nobody really knew what was going to happen in TMAG because nothing DID happen in TMAG. I think most people were able to puzzle out "opens on snow planet, mando fights empire, mando gets rotta, mando goes to nal hutta, ends with the NR striking Nal Hutta", and beyond that there wasn't much that you needed to theorize about. There were no cameos besides Dave "totally inconspicuous normal pilot that my friend who barely knows SW totally didn't immediately clock as a member of the production team" Filoni, no plot twists, nothing. 12 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: With the announcement of the new Doomsday set, we may potentially be able to expect the TIE Avenger by August 2027. If it doesn't happen in either of those slots I think it's unlikely it happens anytime soon at all. They need to. It reminds you that just because we haven't gotten something doesn't mean the designers aren't aware of it. Hopefully. Typically the anniversaries have received at the most one playset, with it mostly restricted to a brickheadz pack and 18+ sets. Perhaps between 2025 being the year of jango and the 50th of the franchise eating more of the 18+ slots, AOTC will simply lose out... or maybe it'll get to double dip on playsets. I went back through my collection- as of the coming December, unless I bite the bullet on the sandcrawler or the Boba Fett somehow reached 35%+ off already, I'll have spent $23 on lego star wars sets myself in the past 2 years (A shameful purchase of the 2nd 332nd pack because I do love mandalorians), and about $100 on new sets in total (a few small marvel sets and the ninjago anniversary display). For January 2027, the sets I have more or less locked in as purchases are the Y-wing and about $100 of marvel sets, which already doubles the total lego purchases I've made in the last two years. But depending on the build I might also pick up Bespin and Mustafar, which would TRIPLE it. If we count sets I've received as gifts that number doubles and January 2027 won't eclipse it unless everything I'm on the fence about ends up being a day 1 purchase, but regardless I think it shows how good this january is looking. Or just that we're finally back to system OT sets and some PT sets that don't rely entirely on Jango Fett's DNA. Quote

I wouldn't consider AOTC "losing out" being a big deal if we won't get another set next year. As far as Lego Star Wars anniversary standards go, getting a set like the Bounty Hunter Pursuit, I would still put it in the above average category. I mean, arguably the best thing happened to TPM last time around was a GWP locked behind a hefty paywall. Considering the amount of content we were and still are getting since the Disney takeover, we would generally be wise to remember that doing every Star Wars anniversaries justice gets harder every year. Especially when you have this overlap between LSW/SW and TPM/AOTC occasions. 13 hours ago, Mandalorianknight said: I went back through my collection- as of the coming December, unless I bite the bullet on the sandcrawler or the Boba Fett somehow reached 35%+ off already, I'll have spent $23 on lego star wars sets myself in the past 2 years (A shameful purchase of the 2nd 332nd pack because I do love mandalorians), and about $100 on new sets in total (a few small marvel sets and the ninjago anniversary display). Ha, your only real Lego Star Wars purchase being the second 332nd Battle Pack (because of Mando appreciation) the last couple of years is kinda on the diabolical side. My 2025/2026 looked a little different than yours. Still getting many of the smaller to mid sized sized sets in the same year. With occasional flagship sets to catch up the years after. Yet I still got but a fraction of the overall releases every year. If I were to recommend you one set to get before it retires, my personal bias admittedly at play here as well, it would be Plo Koon's Microfighter. Even if you don't find it significantly discounted, it's still a low price to pay. And you treat yourself to a magnificent minifigure the maker knows when is showing up again. Just bricklinking him would also be an option, I guess. 13 hours ago, Mandalorianknight said: For January 2027, the sets I have more or less locked in as purchases are the Y-wing and about $100 of marvel sets, which already doubles the total lego purchases I've made in the last two years. Just bricklinking him would also be an option, I guess. I think it's the best Microfighter we've ever gotten, even if it is a little overpriced. Quote
Mandalorianknight Posted July 8 Posted July 8 15 hours ago, BrickPrick said: That's the thing... That would be quite a stepup as far as your Lego purchasing behavior of the last two years is concerned. Right now, I only got Anakin's Delta-7B Starfighter looked in, assuming Lego does the only right thing for the ship owners figure. But the Duel on Mustafar, Bespin and Y-Wing are likely wait for sale candidates for me. A little bit of both, I think. A substantial January wave that goes hand in hand with the right set selection makes this an unusual strong offering. Ha, I got basically little else than Lego Star Wars birthday gifts for the last eight years. They're as follows: That's true- I doubt most people are begging for an AOTC brickheadz pack or statue. It is diabolical. I have the spare income, and I was weak. I wanted the mandos. I will pick up Plo's microfighter at some point, or receive it as a gift or something. I bought one for my father, actually, since he's a big Plo fan. That's fair, it's smart to wait for sales whenever reasonable. I would hope with only 2 figs in the $30 set, one of them being Artoo, that lego gives Anakin the justice he deserves. A good point- it is a mix of both. That's an impressive list! The cantina is one of my grails for if I ever have the space to display sets like that. 13 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: Reveal hidden contents My knowledge of Legacy, like the majority of Legends content, admittedly mostly comes from EckhartsLadder lore videos. I think Matt Smith is rumoured to be a non-force sensitive warlord, likely ex First Order imo. Spoiler I think it would work, but I also wouldn't mind Cade hiding his last name until the end of the movie for it to be revealed. From what I've heard she's now supposed to just be a family friend, the sister was just the original plan. I wonder if that's because Gosling wasn't initially meant to be Cade Skywalker. They would have to move up the timeline (IIRC if gosling is anywhere near the age he is IRL at the time that the movie supposedly takes place, Luke would have had to have had a kid with Camie before he even left tatooine). Honestly I still think there's a good chance the movie takes place later in the timeline then we think. I hope not. I'm not the biggest fan of Talon in general but I've also heard conflicting things about whether Goth is even a force user or just a saber wielder. I kind of like the idea of it just being a cartel boss and bounty hunter opposing the jedi as opposed to dark side force users. Quote

The two Maul Mandos are good enough of an excuse, though. They were for me, too. Ah, a man with an acquired taste, I see. Koh-to-yah Mando man's dad. Yes. That approach can't exactly hurt nowadays. If the aforementioned sets (Bespin/Mustafar/Y-Wing) contain some legitimately great builds, there could always be something on top of the Starfighter. But since it will be my birthday this time around, there basically will be anyways. Like either one of those three sets or something big from 2026. Dude, I'm telling you, I said I was gonna scream if we don't get an detailed General Skywalker. Since Astromechs don't technically count as one and R2 is just, well, another R2... you literally have just this single one minifigure to care for. So they better make it count and do the only right thing here. Otherwise they can sell this set to people who don't care and/or don't know the difference... which would still be more than enough, I suppose. Oh, it definitely is my holy grail of Lego Star Wars sets. I got it displayed on one of those cheap little black IKEA tables in the living room. It ain't exactly ideal, especially when it's very prone to collecting dust out in the open rather quickly, but it's still my proudest prosession to date. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted July 8 Posted July 8 (edited) Looks like we’re getting two ‘meta’ sets next April, one being a theatre with an ANH poster and cosplayers (75659, $199.99), and the other being a BTS diorama of filming Tatooine scenes. This is the set with George Lucas, which also comes with two crew members, Luke, Obi-Wan, R2 and C-3PO. Or rather Mark Hamill, Alec Guinness, Kenny Baker, and Anthony Daniels? The build itself is said to involve the Landspeeder, a moisture evaporator, and filming equipment. I have to say, this sounds like a really unique and creative way to celebrate the anniversary! Anything but a TIE Avenger…. Honestly these sound really cool. There’s a lot of potential for the cinema’s cosplayers (shame it’s not going to be a modular) A few suggestions for candidates both meta fans and also highly cosplayed characters who might not otherwise get a minifig: 501st Legion charity stormtrooper 501st Legion charity X-Wing Pilot Dolores from HR Cal Kestis (survivor) MARA JADE Jedi temple guard Obscure clone trooper Quote
Tariq j Posted July 8 Posted July 8 I actually really like the sound of those. It’s the anniversary year after all so they may as well go all out. Hopefully we get pink shorts guy in the Landspeeder set! Quote
icm Posted July 8 Posted July 8 I mostly didn't like the diorama sets before, but that's actually a brilliant way to get the Landspeeder without it being "yet another Landspeeder" (even though even if it was, a 7-year gap is plenty for a remake) or one compromised by a Smart Brick. I just hope the price is right, because if it's as overpriced as the Smart Brick version that'll be disappointing. Quote
Mandalorianknight Posted July 8 Posted July 8 I get the appeal of them but these personally just don't interest me. They are cool concepts, but it's a similar thing to the giant minifigures- if I want star wars legos, I want legos representing things in the star wars universe, not legos referencing lego star wars or filming/watching star wars. 12 hours ago, BrickPrick said: Can you actually imagine Lego doing a buildable Count Dooku or BrickHeadz before doing a new minifigure? It ain't exactly ideal, especially when it's very prone to collecting dust out in the open rather quickly, but it's still my proudest prosession to date. I think it's entirely possible in the latter case. Dooku would be guaranteed for an AOTC Brickheadz pack, but doesn't appear to be showing up before then in sets. It's not unheard of- though this would probably the most extreme example- as Grievous and General Lando also both received brickheadz a number of years after their minifigures went off shelves. I'm glad to hear I wasn't alone in my lapse in judgement- though I do quite like the speeder, too. Some new wedge-tip curved slopes I hadn't seen before. Nice- and yes, of course, it's always going to come down to the build. For some reason lego seems to count astromechs as minifigures. They don't do it with the B1s/B2s, etc, but they do with the astromechs. That said, two minifigs in a $30 set- one of them re-used- would imply a detailed general skywalker is coming, since it's sort of like the Cobb Vanth speeder set if the other fig had been a re-used Mando instead of your beloved Cad Bane. I think we probably will get arm printing and the like- the real question is if we'll get the more visually distinct navy and maroon robes, or the black and brown. Dust is a scourge for legos. Especially the black-base dioramas- at least Mos Eisely has to be harder to notice dust on given the lighter colors. 9 minutes ago, CloneCommando99 said: A few suggestions for candidates both meta fans and also highly cosplayed characters who might not otherwise get a minifig: MARA JADE You've turned me around. This is the best set idea of all time, I can't believe it took lego 28 years to make it. (Joking of course, but if they were able to sneak Mara in I would be very grateful- especially because you could probably snag Mara for cheaper than your average exclusive-to-$200-set figure since there'll be a ton of city fans buying the build and scrapping the figs.)
