Age of Mitgardia - Barracks Phase 2 - Shield Wall

We rejoin Alva Tyrnsdottir sometime after the axe-throwing tournament and sometime after her father began training her in the Arnarvhall style of axe and dagger close-quarters combat. An Arnarvhalling shield maiden must master many martial skills, however, including the traditional Shield Wall employed by viking parties.

Training on the sand in full battle dress promotes the strength and coordination necessary for real combat. Though the weapons are blunted, no one enjoys getting hit by them.

Tyrn, Alva's own father, acts as the commander of the Red Team. Their goal is to protect him from the Blue Team and vice versa. If either should break through, its commander is exposed and the victory is won for the other side.

The commander of the Blue Team is Mad Marrgin, known in Arnarvhall for both his experience with the Shield Wall and his penchant for unorthodox tactics.

Finally got around to my latest GoH build! I'm very proud of the water here and hope it looks as good to you guys as it does to me. I also like this Runestone better than the one I put in my Archery Phase 3. I notice now that I'm missing an obvious Mitgardian standard/flag. I hope all the green sleeves and yellow hands/faces are enough!

Anyway, credit goes to someone else for the warhammer design. I only wish I could remember who's build it was where we talked about it. Same goes for the Runestone really! I should start making a list of stuff I see and then put in builds but sometimes there's a serious time lag and I forget. :( So please take credit if you see something familiar!

Oh and Phase 1 here.

Very interesting take on the barracks phase :) is it meant to be a phase 1 or is it a phase 3? I was expecting more of a barracks type build if phase 3, oh and the war hammer is a design by LordDan, we discussed it in one of my builds :)

Edit: seen your link to phase 1, it doesn't really feel like a phase 3 to me. Awesome build though.

Edit: you have a typo in your title ;)

DARNIT. It's supposed to be Phase 2. That's the second time I've screwed that up by editing the autofill instead of just retyping it. :(

Phase 2 is supposed to be training ground, which this is. Thanks for pointing it out. That and about LordDan's warhammer. It's a cool technique!

First I've (knowingly) seen that warhammer design; even if you didn't create it, I'm glad you gave it more visibility! Gonna have to throw some of those into my dwarven ranks (the Dwarven Mine-style hammers can get cumbersome, quickly, fun as they are). Very (non-Marvel) Thor-like!

Cool training ground, too! Nice use of the big disc-shields.

I love the shield wall, nice job with that! It's cool to see some viking style fighting techniques. And great job on the water!

Sorry I didn't know at the time of typing it was phase two. :/ for phase two though it's more than enough. The posing is excellent as is the water :) bring on phase 3 :)

Interesting build, I really like that water and of course the war hammer. It's also good to see that you follow me in establishing dark tan and Mitgardia's basic groud color!

NOTE: THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE PHASE 2, NOT PHASE 3. COULD A MOD PLEASE UNDO MY STUPIDITY AND RENAME THIS THREAD PHASE 2?

A regulator suffices for this job

Yeah, official Lego shields, included in the Viking sets.

I use dk tan for Mitgardia's ground colour! To be honest, dark tan is pretty versatile in terms of ground!

I really like your use of the Viking shields for this build. I have a few of the red ones, but you make me wish I had some blue ones! Maybe it's time for my next Bricklink order...

Really nice! I agree that the water looks wonderful, and to see the Viking style combat and build for Mitgardia is wonderful!

Another great build Mccoyed, definitely one of the prettiest representations of waves/costal water I've seen. The shield walls and posing are great, with the way they're just peeping over the top of the shield I can almost feel the tension of when the two groups meet.

It's a really great hammer design. I like the Brick Warriors warhammers and I really like the Thor hammer especially for dwarves but wanted to try these out. Even though I have tons of 3rd party medieval weapons, I seem to gravitate toward brick-built a lot. Something satisfying about it I guess.

I love those big dish shields and have tried to fit them into as many builds as possible!

That water is amazing!

That is so gratifying to hear.

Thanks Hammer. I try to bring the Norse to Mitgardia as much as I can. Hence all my references to Arnarvhall's "old ways".

Thanks Len!

Thanks for fixing that for me, kabel. You're my favorite regulator. I think you and SK pretty much led the pack for me when it came to establishing Mitgardia's base color schemes... and then there's Gunman of course. :P

I'm glad to see dark tan as ground, too... I seem to have tons of dark tan plates (if only there were more dark tan hands!)

Same. Way, way more than light tan anyway. I think that dark tan gives a cold and somewhat harsh tone to the landscape of Mitgardia, which is suitable for parts of it and fits nicely with my Arnarvhall builds which mostly take place in winter. Fur cloaks and all. Arnarvhallings don't wait for the warm season to train!

Nice minifig posing.

Thanks.

Thanks Gun! And I think Alf answered ya.

Thanks Alf!

Thanks LV. And yeah, dark tan is what I seem to use the most for ground. Brown is too... brown? Looks like mud or rich dirt. :P And light tan seems to be sand which could have worked here, but I wanted a gloomier, early winter morning kind of feel.

Thanks ME. After the build you just knocked out, I'm frickin' humbled to get this kinda praise from you.

There's one guy on the blue team with a very... scared look on his face. I didn't get a good photo of it apparently.

I really love the way this all feels so natural, from the realistic water to the great fig posing. I also like how the dark tan and the water gives it a chilly, early beach morning feel, and how the little details like the rocks and the runestone work well to add to its realism.

Yeah the hammer design is mine, and it looks great with those big round shields!

Sweet! The figs look nice & well posed. I love that water technique--I've used it a couple times myself. For me the piles of 1x1 rounds is just lazy. You know you've actually built something when you 1.) have to stick each one of those buggers ON the build and 2.) have to take each one of those buggers OFF the build! :enough::laugh:

That missing corner kind of bugs me though.

I had been quickly looking at work at this moc on my cell phone, but on a decent screen the water is really good! You did a awesome job on it, better than i ever could. Also i like the team blue/red thing going on. It's barracks allright, and you gave that a nice original twist.

Excellent build mccoyed. A superb idea to start with, fantastic minifig posing, and I can hear the waves crashing when I look at it. Highly evocative.
