  1. Seriously?! ANOTHER new release! I can't believe how fast you pump out new stuff. The other customizing companies should follow this example. Good stuff again. the phalanx looks awesome.
  2. I often use these strategies to justify myself: - It is comparable to other adult hobbies, e.g. building models or model trains. That often works, especially because I am a customizer. - There is a world wide community and I participate in contests. Contests seem to make things grown-up. - It does not happen in front of a computer (ok, it often does). - It is creative. I have shown selfmade LEGO narratives on weddings (starring the couple) and it was always the single best contribution to the wedding. - LEGO and reading have made me intelligent. I am more creative and intelligent than the average, which justifies the things that have shaped me. - It will help me being a father. - Would you rather prefer I watched football and drank beer? I tend to avoid the term "playing". It makes peope think I take figs in my hands and make them beat up each other going "piuupiuu, ouch, take this".
  3. Thanks for the responses. My school does already have a course for the first LEGO robotic league, so anything technic related is already done by someone else. I would rather work on the aesthetic side of LEGO, which leaves less room for problem solving. A very interesting take on constructivism though. Building vignettes of bible stories, hmm, like on the bricktestament webpage. Christian parents would love that. Personally, I would prefer elves slaughtering orcs, I would kind of need a very loose interpretation of the scripture for that. But if the kids want to build something like this, I would not stop. A course like this would need to be open to ages 12 to 19. One problem might be that I might end up with loads of 12 year old girls building one horse story after the other. Maybe a few boys building ninja stuff, that would be nice. Any more ideas?
  4. Hi everyone, with me recently having turned from a university scholar of witchcraft into a christian private school teacher, I am looking for ways to introduce LEGO projects in school. Not as part of official subjects like maths or physics, but as a voluntary pastime for pupils, but led and supervised by a teacher (me). To some extend, I would get paid for this. Does anyone here have any experience with such a format? Ideas? My idea would be something like writing stories, building them with LEGO and take digital pictures to make narrative photo books or powerpoint presentations. This combines the power of narratives that I believe in with building and results in nice products the kids could show at home or whereever. Also they could paint backgrounds and built studios from cardboard boxes. Of course, I would need loads of figs and bricks for this. Do any of you have experience with such things?
  5. Hmm, this is difficult, the thing in the middle does not leave an open space for complicated images, but two rather complicated thin halves. I do not have really good ideas. Maybe moon and stars (white on dark blue?), or other universal symbols like lightnings, eyes, gras... Maybe a star- or sunlike pattern could include the two spiky surfaces and add more spikes in print. The original Roman pattern that the original TLG shield emulates would work (and maybe sell well with Roman armies coming up here and there). One thing could just be to color the outer rim and the rim in the middle to give it a look like it was made from two materials, e.g. metal on wood like the aragorn shield does. Somehow the current CMF islanders face mask comes to mind as it has a shape like the new shield. Printing it like some tribal mask might be interesting, with the stud in the middle as mouth or nose. Might also fit the whole savage/tribal/gladiator theme on BW. Personally, I am stuck in Elf aesthetics, so I am somewhat limited to gras, leaves, trees, wolves, owls and such things. Runes of course kind of work for many factions. A dwarf might look funny with such a big shield.
  6. Hi everyone, the CCC has one focus on making custom factions this year. This is a good idea, I think custom factions are a bit underepresented in the customizers world. One reason for this might be that painting small logos on shields, torsos, breastplates and banners in series is a very difficult and annoying thing. Now I had an idea that I thought I might share here: Using self-adhesive fingernail airbrushing templates for making custom factions. Think about it: A fingernail has roughly the size that you need to paint on when making custom shields, torsos etc. Fingernail airbrush artists - I thing I was not aware of until yesterday - use tiny templates to airbrush or paint. A quick search in the respective shops has shown that these templates can be very detailled and cost virtually nothing. For example, I ordered some deer templates with antlers which cost 3 Euro for 12 templates. They come in sizes of 5-7mm, which is very useful when applying the same sigil on different items. Stick them on, peint over it and you might have a very easy way to customize tiny sigils without the need to be an artist with the tiniest of brushes. I have yet to try this out, but I thought maybe this might reflame someomes love for customizing. Maybe this is already known, in which case I would like hear some experiences.
  7. Thanks for the review. A question: Are calamaty drone's arms pearl dark gray or is it just a reflection from the flash? That's a rare color for arms, isn't it? Wyldstyle might be an army builder, but I don't know for what army yet. Some sinister female archer or mage.
  8. Just ordered a bunch of shields, could not resist with the free shipping and all. I have been looking for big defensive shields for a while. If someone would ever make decals for these shields...
  9. I like the shields a lot. They don't have spikes on them ;-), this is good. I hope they come in some metallic colors soon. Also that they have a clip is an awesome idea. I can see them in many mocs, not only Romans. Lego did a good thing with the roman shield, but these are even better.
  10. In terms of color scheme, the mountain elves would be the most interesting. They could still be evil. Evil that is smart enough to dress white in the snow. They could be pale as well.
  11. What on earth?! While fans of other themes scrape together their armies fig by fig (Oh why not pay another 6 Euro for ONE more Eomer, to use his legs and helmet and throw away the rest?), Star Wars gets such splendid battle packs?! Makes me want to become a SW-collector. I want to hear not one complaint about these! OK, throw in a new plant piece in nice olive green in a random battle Star Wars pack, because the figs are only perfect already. (Please read this with a grain of salt, I do not want to offend anyone. It's just pure envy.)
  12. Hmm, whacky stuff. I like the black female torso (dark sorceress?) and silver arms in this theme. LEGO is made for combining elements in crazy ways and in that spirit the movie and the figs work. Can't argue against that. Does someone have a picture of Shakespeare's legs? What blue is that on the black girl with the fan?
  13. A golden bow is very welcome. I wish it was a longbow though.
  14. I'll be there again. After I sucked last year, I will try extra hard.
  15. I bought no Uruk Army, but 8 Eomers and 12 Rohan soldiers (these I got for a very good price). Since my regiment size is 8+1 for foot soldiers and 4 for mounted soldiers, I will buy three MEAs. That makes 1 regiment of archers with leader instantly. The orcs I shall sell off to buy one more warg to make a warg regiment (still need to find out what exactly as I still think they look weird with a saddle). Then I need 6 more Thranduils to make a new regiment, which is a bit more a long time effort. Maybe there is a way to cut down the wooden crown to make them more generic, with one leader with full crown.
  16. What on earth?! Is there a picture of this weird idea? How do we know its a medieval podracer?
  17. By the way, you can see this if you click on the "Elf Druid and tree demon" link in my signature below.
  18. In most cases, I use 2 of the the official lego grass (the one with three spikes to put flower petals on), and put a green 1x1 round brick on top, in which the abovmentioned spike is then inserted. Unfortunately, these spikes are not cheap.
  19. I use these in green a lot for high grass: http://www.bricklink...tem.asp?P=64727
  20. Hmm, with my focus on elves I was half looking forward and half scared of the Mirkwood Elf Army set. Looking forward because of the new options it would give. Scared that it would be the mega perfect game changer which would overshadow my own elven army and/or cost me big amounts of money. Now I am half disappointed and half relieved. A game changer it is not. Three times the same elf with a print that is Tauriel's with extra leaves on the torso. Good for elven rangers or something, but in no way reaching in the potential that elf figs can have. 2 shields is a nice amount but I do not like the design. The forest maidens was the last really good elven shield. So I guess I won't know what to do with these shields. Maybe they look better in reality. Thranduil is awesome and a another good example for how good figs can get. Maybe it will make sense to use him for regular soldiers if he will ever be available for a reasonable price. The warg is the second highlight. Interesting that they release them in a third color now. I still remember seeing a preliminary dark tan new horse which never made it to the market. I hope the warg will really come in dark brown. They do look a bit odd with saddle and rider, because they are not as tall as a horse, but one can still make nice mocs with them. So I guess I will buy 3 MEAs, sell off the orcs and buy one more warg. This will make one regiment of elves and maybe one regiment of Thranduils at some points. It is a nice addition to the army, but no basis for a new one.
  21. Ok, I just learned this is MICROscale, so I am talking not about MINI, but MICRO here: Hello, I was recently inspired by this epic and supportworthy project: http://www.eurobrick...showtopic=87134 And now I wonder what the thinking behind building in such a scale is. One thing is perhaps obvious: Define some sort of scale and stick to it. But to what extend does one have to make compromises? Take a simple house. If you set a scale which makes it 5 bricks high, then so be it. But as soon as you add detail such as a door or stairs, thinks might become difficult. If according to your scale the door would be 1,5 studs wide, would you make it 1 or 2 wide, violating your scale one way or the other. Add 10 types of details all with different "makeability ratios" and the chaos is complete. How does this work? PS: Support the abovementioned project (not mine)!
  22. This is soo beautiful. Made me want to build in that scale, too. Great project, I will support it.
  23. Very awesome! Best custom stuff I have seen in a while. Love the griffin especially. How is the beak made? Did you cut off the teeth? Is there any additional clay or something involved? It looks very muscular and sturdy, which is good. Once again, I envy your spraypainting abilities. I am working on a pegasus, too. I also ran into the leg problem, which you are covering smartly in your pictures :-)
  24. I just bought 2 copies as well. Without figs. If you are after dark bley, this set is awesome. So many tiny tiles and cheeseslopes and what not. Also lot of stickers, which can be nice for some.
  25. S11 has reached Germany. Bought a tiki warrior and a grandma, because I misfelt her bag for the - also rubbery - islander mark.
