(MOC) Icecream Truck (ex hearse) 7 stud (Monster Fighters)
Gabe replied to B Rick's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Haha, that's great! I got the ice cream truck recently too and put it next to my vampire hearse - it seemed natural that they would go together, being such unusual, outsized vehicles. I never would have thought of mashing them up like this though - fantastic stuff!- 40 replies

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Gosh, it's all happening! Challenges, mini-challenges... lots to play for! I'm still working on a merchant ship for the GNAR challange, was trying to get the waves motorised last night, man was that a hilarious fail. Hopefully i'll be done with that by the end of the week and i can start thinking about the warship i want to build. -

Great storylines and builds, Rogueang! I would prefer to work with DeGothia on plague suppression measures, but if called upon, our newly trained dragon riders can assist Simon in the fight against the drow. -
So nice - love all the wall texturing and your cavalry regiment looks great!

Cracking first GoH build Gilbert, so much to enjoy and pore over. That wall technique is quite ingenious, although i can certainly believe it would be a pain to build. I like the post holes on the battlements too, and enjoyed seeing the transition from bare to covered. So this is your outer perimeter wall for the castle, right? I'd love to see a microscale rendition of the whole castle complex, just to see what it all looks like!

Man i love that booksled! Looks like so much fun... I actually don't mind the blockiness of the first moc, but the composition does have a bit of a static look to it. Maybe if the path was on an incline or something, that would help? I look forward to seeing where shivering Ettu ends up next!

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
That's a sweet pic - some great ideas there. It would work anywhere there is sedementary sandstone/limestone cliffs i guess, although it could also be explained in a fantasy setting by magical forces/damage, or rock eating creatures that died out in the past etc. No need to stick to a rational reason! -

Great builds Mike, i really like the elephant armour! Cool character update too. That blur effect with with the sand at the edges of the plates looks awesome btw - how did you achieve that, just lots of the clone tool? -
There is a lot to like in this build Jakon. You have a good idea for minifig detail and seeing all the everyday activity really brings your tower to life. The stairs going up the side of the building, with the landing on the first floor is nice too, as is the small storehouse. A couple of things did niggle at me though - your first floor door is nicely recessed, but the ground floor door (and i assume the main door) is flat against the wall, which just doesn't look as good. (I assume recessed doors are better at keeping the snow and biting winds out too!) I'm also curious about the white plates at the top of the tower, that extend beyond the back of the whole diorama - are you planning to extend the build back further or something? Regarding UoP stuff, there is certainly nothing wrong or out of place about the storehouse roof, but i agree that for a credit, a larger, more detailed roof would be preferable to demonstrate mastery. By my count, at this stage you only need one credit for fortification, which i will gladly give you.

Cheers Tyler! Do you think we've started a trend? Thanks Toby!

Thanks peeps, glad you both like it! It is interesting how some ppl think it is a logical extension of the old classic sets and some ppl think i've deviated too far from the original design - one area i think i did fail in is the lack of "swooshability" in my version... it is just too fragile to zoom it around the room making spaceship noises! Sadly, it remains more of a display piece, and the classic 918 sees more airtime.

Super cool - i like how recessed the eyes are and they look great paired with those heavy brows. The sculpting on the top and back of the head is fantastic too. Great work and congrats on being frontpaged!

Thanks Gunman! Thanks! Yeah it is life-sized (or slightly larger tbh) too, and has given me a fright a couple of times so far when i've gotten up in the middle of the night - i walk out into the living room and see this dark head silouette in the corner... and then i remember what it is, lol! Not to mention how nervous my cat was when he first saw it too, heh. Cheers Scorpiox, glad you like it! Haha thanks Legogal! Yes, tan doesn't quite have the proper skin tone and probably contributes to the anemic look too, heh! And Michelangelo can rest easy - this is no David... oh wait....

Very, very nice work soccerkid! All the different roof levels look great and i love the tall, narrow windows (framed so well btw) and dark bley corners. Top stuff! ps. UoP +1 for all claims.

Gosh Kai, your builds are getting bigger and bigger! I had to check initially that it wasn't microscale. The front of the gate looks neat with it's stone and wood combination, it looks really convincing as a smaller, secondary "trademan's entrance" into the city. I'm also really fond of the blue building behind the gate, it looks very natural leaning up against the wall there, and the chimney is great too. The purple house confuses me a little - don't get me wrong, i like the colours, i just think they would work better as an accents rather than in a block like that. I also wish there had been some kind of window in the upper story - it looks like some kind of super colourful storehouse rather than somewhere that ppl would live? But good on you for experimenting - i do love seeing way out achitechture and colour choices, makes things interesting! I'll give you UoP +1 for the wall technique and Life in Kaliphlin - i'd like to see more for the desert geography though, to my thinking a few stacked tan plates isn't quite enough.

This is a great start Scaevola, and you've already got some top advice from ppl here. I really like the off-square footprint of the building, the detailed door and the lush vegetation. The stained glass window is a great idea, but my suggestion would be to use a different technique to build it other than stacked 1x1 rounds - otherwise it blends in with the walls as they are very similar textures. Stacked square plates would work better perhaps, or cheese slopes if you are feeling adventurous! My other suggestion is to search for reference material for rooftops - topping out buildings can be very challenging and it helps to have an idea what yr going for or it can end up looking a bit randomly tacked on. Not that i'm saying that your roof is bad mind you, just that it could use a bit more visual punch. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

Thanks LT, i had a lot of fun with this. Glad to hear that you've enjoyed my build!

Heh! Thanks! You can thank my partner for being the fan - i was just inspired by the challenge. Glad to hear that you like the outcome! Thankyou! Yeah, it certainly wasn't easy. I had reference pics and an anatomy background to draw upon, but the build still made me stop and rethink on more than one occasion. Glad you like it! Cheers, yeah i was pretty happy with the shoulders. I still think there should be a slight gap below the clavicle, before the swell of the chest muscle, but time constraints meant i couldn't go back and fix it. Oh well, something to keep in mind for next time i guess.

Thankyou! Yeah i couldn't resist playing around with some of my old sets when i was done - good times.

Just stunning stuff here Gideon, i just love how monumental that gatehouse is - so solid and imposing, you really do get the sense that it has stood for centuries. The texturing of the walls is top notch and i love the addition of the damaged and repaired section. All the little details like the tollbooth, lead roofing and access stairs etc look so realistic too. I really hope you manage to add some surrounding cliff face to this, that would be simply spectacular!

This really is amazing gunman, so original and inventive. The architecture of the fort reminds me a little of a cambodian temple. I'm not so convinced by the corner gate - it looks a bit like an old-fashioned turnstile or something. The trees are great - not sure that the design would have many uses, but it works here to great effect with the strange architecture. Congrats on the frontpaging btw, well deserved!
-
Wow, what a great layout! Lots of sweet details - i think my fav is the bear in the cave. The dockyard and ship also caught my eye, and all the different rooftops look great together. Well done and congrats on your win, that's awesome!

Neat brick built hull robuko, they are always tricky to pull off so i can understand your frustration! The dragon prow is also very cool. She looks quite sleek and agile. Nice work!
