Ah, the eyes are creeping me out! Lovely build Emma, the perfect illustration of sneakiness and strategy playing as large a part in warfare as brute strength. Beautiful lines on this one, both body and sail. I really like your mix of system and bionicle/technic connections too, they give the ship an interesting organic feel. ps. I was just thinking about this today whilst walking down by the creek, and i suddenly remembered what this ship reminded me of - a cormorant! I can just see her taking down the sails and diving beneath the waves to ambush enemy ships...

Thanks pizzapizza, Gary the Procrastinator, funkygallo, Niku, qiadris and ISC for your lovely and encouraging comments! I had a lot of fun building this, i'm glad that ppl are enjoying looking at it too. Ah yeah, i see it now! Haha, i didn't even think of that before you pointed it out... must have subconsciously influenced my naming of the ship. Thanks Emma! Thanks Thomas! Yeah those viking hull parts are really useful despite their size, i really like them. I look forward to seeing what use you put them to! Thanks for your comment JopieK! Sails are pretty easy peasy, they are just acrylic primed cotton duck canvas - you can buy them primed or do it yourself, and then just cut to size. Helps to stop fraying and they are a good stiffness too.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Yeah, definitely a tricky one. I'd go for the challenge II entries first, even just one or two categories helps, and then maybe pull out a sultan's gate build if you have the time. I'm doing a similar thing - no Cat C entry for me sadly, as i'm gearing up for a show and have to keep everything together throughout June. (will run out of bricks) -
Thanks so much Infernum, Khorne, Mechamike, Soccerkid, Gideon, ManInATopHat and Adventurer1; I really appreciate all your kind words. Cheers Kayne, glad you like it, considering we were thinking along similar lines. And i for one am very much looking forward to seeing your challenge II entry! Oh dear... wowzers, that is a landlubbers mistake! Thanks for picking that up nstickney, i'll have to fix that up (and the wind waves too, i guess) before i take it to the Queenscliffe Brick Show. Cheers mate!

Yes, masts certainly can be tricky to stabilise with heavy sails. One thing i've found to help is to use the plastic rigging that you used to get in old pirate ships - by connecting it to the outside rail and running it up to a mast platform, you can strengthen the mast considerably. I've used that in my dromon to good effect - i'm sure you could do a similar thing with custom rigging if you could get the tension right. UoP +1 for your "shipping by sea/water" credit.

Another nice build Scaevola, you certainly are refining your style with the use of different wall textures, window and roofing options. Your photos are still very dark though - have you looked into GIMP yet? Some quick adjustments could brighten your pics considerably. UoP +1 for Life in Kaliphlin, however for dense foliage i would like to see just a little more than just one story of ground cover - i would prefer to see a mix of several different kinds of plant life for that credit. (This could be as simple as placing a layer of 6x5 or 3x4 plant leaves underneath your bamboo peices, or adding the stalk parts to the top of the bamboo - mix it up for different effects! )

Congrats to Gideon and Soccerkid on obtaining their Bachelor of Architecture degrees! Well done guys!- 343 replies

Lovely. A well thought build with lots of detail. The interior is great! I agree with deGothia that windowsills for the upstairs windows would look good though. On another note, i applaud you managing to keep building through your period of low inspiration - i know it can be a struggle at times!

Congrats to the winners, and a hearty round of applause to all the entrants!

Thanks everyone for your very kind comments, i am glad that you have enjoyed my build! Thanks Mass Editor! I've had a dromon on my "to build" list for a while now, so it feels good to realise it at last. I know of at least one other Kaliphlin person who built a dromon as well, but they are keeping it back for their challenge II build. ps. Thanks, now i've added "Korean turtle ship" to my ever growing to build list! Cheers mate! Yep, every oar is manned - i should take the deck off and take a pic, i forgot to do that... Nooo, don't go, stay a while! You can build some ships with us here, we won't mind at all. GoH are a friendly mob (apart from the odd inter-guild heckling), i promise! Seriously, thanks for your kind words, hope to see you visit us again soon. Aw thanks Hammerhand! The sails are just acrylic primed canvas, and the emblem is hand painted. It gives a nice stiffness to the sails, you can even bend them to shape a little bit.

(RESULTS)The Great Mitgardia / Kaliphlin Naval Arms Race (Contest)
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Here is my warship entry for Kaliphlin - Barqan Dromon (The Kraken) -
This is my entry for the "warship" GNAR category. The dromons are the heavy hitters of the Kaliphlin navy. Developed in Barqa, where the use of fire siphons was first employed in naval warfare, they are a devastating force, especially when deployed in formation. Thier heavy rams are proven ship-killers, and the prow siphon can throw a fire attack well over 30 metres. With the expansion of the fleet, construction of many of these intimidating ships have been contracted to the Peregrinus shipbuilders, who have been hard at work sourcing the finest timber from local and Mitgardian stocks to complete the order on time. Here, a newly built ship, The Kraken, is being sailed in convoy with others to join the rest of the fleet in Barqa. The Peregrinian shipwrights have also added thier own touch to the dromons - 4 mini catapaults to hurl pitch bombs at the enemy. Lord Sansael has taken the opportunity to deliver this batch of new ships personally - he also takes the time to discuss the latest developments in naval strategy with The Kraken's new captain. C&c welcome as always - thanks for looking peeps!

Really nice moc odidoma! The irregular base looks very natural, the tree has good height and the orange and red foliage looks a treat! The small wooden outpost is solidly built too. If i have a small criticism , it is that the front right of the base seems very bare - a small amount of landscaping or even a little path would do wonders to bring life to that area, or possibly you could have cut out that part of the base altogether. Anyway, great work, i look forward to seeing your future mocs!

Great little fire wagon you have there Gideon! Really nice design. Hopefully my forces won't get too close to them. I am sad to hear that you won't be fielding a GNAR entry though.

Cute little boat, nstickney! I like the subtle curve on the brick-built sail.

Nice build Thomas! You really do use those large log panel pieces to good effect. (I always liked those pieces!) The overhanging battlements with those big arches look great. The snow bank and ice moat is nicely done too, although i agree with others that a darker colour under the ice might work better to show deeper water. What is that dude doing behind the guard in the fourth pic down?? Turn around random guard #1, it's clearly a decoy!

Character Intro- Kashifa ibn Mu'adh
Gabe replied to Thomas of Tortuga's topic in Guilds of Historica
Really nice intro Thomas, it's great to have you in Kaliphlin! The lighting in your sigfig shot is excellently done, and my fav part of this vig. The only thing that really jars for me is the break between the green plate and the tan underground layer - another approach to cover that might be to use hinges with plates attached to them to "waterfall" the foliage in a ragged edge, just to break up that sharp demarcation.- 28 replies

Another wonderfully clean and solid build, Gideon! Everything just looks so well placed and beautifully proportioned. I love the half-timbered building in particular. Great work!

Wow, such impressive and dramatic rockwork! I think that sells the scene even more than the excellent battle scene on top of it. I love that huge sweep of the rock bridge up to the final pillar... makes it look as if the very land itself is hurling the orcs to their doom. (sorcery perhaps?) Fantastic stuff!

One of the things i really enjoy about your builds is how often you reach for something different, and this build is no exception! The brick-bending triangle base is certainly unique, and i liked the subtle angles of the slopes on the bow and stern. The wave action is very dynamic, although when i looked initially i was convinced that the water was flowing in the opposite direction - it does look a little like a stream of water being poured into a container? (And the ship with it! ) Generally that scumbled surface (the scattered cheese) comes from the disturbance of the water surface where waves roil and break, wheras the back of waves that high are smooth as all the forces are moving in the same direction. Still, it is an interesting technique and adds a lot of drama to your scene, as does the minifig posing of the bailing sailors. You don't need any more credits, but i would still give you them for waves and minifig posing anyway.... nice work!

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Welcome to our newest Kaliphlinites! Great intro post guys. Thomas, i love the photography in your cavern shot - looks like Kashifa ibn Mu'adh just made her fortune. DragonsandFlagons, it looks as though we are neighbours! Two falcon clans in such proximity - should be interesting to see how our peoples get on. I'm still working away on my warship for the GNAR challenge - just need sails and a few minor tweaks and she should be done. Looks like we will have 2 dromon entries! -
Hersir of Archers: Wat Tambor Hersir of Infantry: Gunman Hersir of Cavalry: Garmadon Great entries everyone!

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
On the sigfig issue, you can certainly change if you are getting sick of your character, but it's a good idea to make a small "wrap up" build to say goodbye to them (and add to guild lore in the process - especially if they have been around for a while) in addition as your new sigfig intro. You can also create multiple POV characters for a bit of variety as well. (although sometimes it's a stretch to remember all their names and how they relate to one another! )
