Ch II: Team Simon: Cat A: Gathering Information
Gabe replied to Infernum's topic in Guilds of Historica
Cool entry Infernum! The subtle gradient in the landscaping is well thought out and the placement of figs is great too, especially the scout peering over the wall. Nice texturing on the ruined wall too!- 28 replies

Avalonian Second Task: Departing for Albion
Gabe replied to Gilbert Despathens's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great moc Gilbert! The house in particular is a beauty. One thing i would spend a little more time on next time is your presentation - you have a variety of different lighting issues going on in your pics. Your mocs certainly deserve to be shown in their best light! UoP +1 for all credits. I was on the fence about the "River scene" credit, and i certainly wouldn't advise using this sparse scattered effect for Hydrology credits, for instance (where the aim is to show mastery of water behaviour and dynamics); but for Geography i think the scattered blue combined with the nice jetty and cliff bank is enough to imply it's location. (It certainly works to create a lovely scene!) Btw, could you please specify both in your post and in the UoP Moc registration thread the credits you are claiming, including which wall section you would like credited. (stone or half-timbering? Both are good enough to pass, but you need a total of three wall techniques in total to pass that unit)- 26 replies

Gotta love those happy accidents! UoP +1 for shipping by water, nicely done.

C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks heaps Tomsche! No need to be jealous, just get yourself a bunch of 1x4 hinge plates (the ones that hinge horozontally), and you'll be making your own round buildings in no time. You do need a *lot* of them though - i must have used about 70-80 of them in this build alone. Thanks Yooha! Ah yes, interiors... the structure was designed in a modular fashion so that interiors can be seen, but then i went and layered a great stonking tree over the roof, so it's actually not that easy to get to... I should get into using LED lights in my mocs, that's something i've never tried before.- 44 replies

C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks everyone, I'm glad you you like it! Thanks Scaevola! I was actually planning to either have a off-centred tower rising out of the second floor, or an orrery on top of the roof, but i ran out of time. I am planning to revisit this architectural style again someday, so i'll save it for then. Thanks Mccoyed! I quite liked my little tent actually... although i'm sure i could refine it somewhat if i spent a little more time on it. I agree they can be a tough challenge, i've built a few of them now and i always have to think quite a bit about how to tackle it. Thanks Thomas! Ohh, yeah that's not meant to be Peter, whoops my bad. I was so planning to put the Bavarian CMF in there originally, i should have stuck with that and not tried to get too tricky. If you look carefully, you can see he's got Leiderhosen on, so clearly not Peter! Thanks also for your comment on the ground foliage - i agree that the ground looks too busy but i'm not sure myself that it's the fault of the red leaves. The point of having that colour ground foliage was to tie dark red as an accent colour right the way through the build. The orange could probably go though. Getting the green herb buckets and gnome out of the way would help too. Cheers UtilityBelt! Noo, it's not Peter i promise, just a look-alike! Ugh i feel so embarrassed about that mix-up. Yep i'm coming to agree with some of the comments about the ground cover - definitely losing the orange (and maybe some of the olive as well) would help unify the colour scheme. Oddly enough i was much more worried about my use of white for the staircase -i ummed and ahhed a bit about whether or not to change it to light bley. Same (in reverse) for the lintel details on the ground floor. I find white is a hard colour to work with in large blocks, it's just so stark.- 44 replies

C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe posted a topic in Guilds of Historica
Bloodleaf shrine lies near the edges of the mighty forests of Avalonia, built in honour of a famous elf warrior who fell there centuries ago, fighting in the first drow wars. It is said that when his blood stained the heath, the undergrowth grew up and strangled his foes. The area is famed for the red heath that now grows around the shrine, which has been used by the priests and priestesses there to make their special incense, which they burn day and night in the shrine’s braziers. Researchers from Kaliphlin’s University of Petraea have long been interested in the healing properties of these and other herbs that grow around the area. Medical lecturer Dishan Rubati and her centaur research assistant were already deep in study there when the plague struck Avalonia. As refugees from the surrounding villages began to arrive, they used what they had learnt so far to start producing not only healing pastes and potions, but also disinfectant from the volatile plant oils. Previous chapter Next chapter Note: the above are revised photos after Z convinced me of the need to spruce up the staircase - thanks Z for the good suggestion! I made a few other tweaks here and there as well. The photo below is of the original version, for comparison. Anne and Edith, exhausted from fleeing Brevis, managed at last to find their way to the sanctuary. The shrine guards, whilst overwhelmed by the constant stream of refugees, do their best to offer what small comforts they can. While relieved to have found a safe place to rest and regather their strength, Anne still frets about her missing family and is keen to move on soon. Young Edith worries too, but is momentarily distracted by the tall elf who leads them to spare beds and offers them some food. "You don't see beauty like that in Brevis!" she muses to herself. Secretly she schemes to find a way to talk to him alone, but he seems preoccupied dealing with the current influx of people to the sanctuary. Dishan Rubati impatiently waits for Brix, her centaur research assistant; "Brix, how are those bindweed samples drying out? Also, do you have any more hedgehog pine needles, i need more for this batch of disinfectant!" Although Dr. Rubati is a hard taskmaster, Brix wouldn't be anywhere else - the work is fascinating and his botanical knowledge has increased markedly since coming to the shrine. Above the bustle of the ground floor, preistess Dryadelindas performs her daily offerings of fresh incense whilst the rangers keep watch. A bonus shot of the furniture from Dr. Rubati's laboratory on the ground floor - it was a bit cramped in there to see properly, so i thought i'd take a separate pic. The bench is set up with a custom press for extracting plant oils. As the plants are crushed, the oil seeps out of a hole in the base of the table and into the bucket below. Of course, it's a bit tall for Dr. Rubati to operate, so she has a step ladder to reach the crushing mechanism and lever. Safety first! ~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for looking everyone! Best of luck to all in the challenge! Ps: I am seeking UoP certification of the following credits for this build please: Architecture - 1x Roof technique Architecture - Advanced SNOT (for the circular 1st floor balcony) Landscape Design - 1x Tree Anthropology - Life in Avalonia- 44 replies

Nice camp Mccoyed! I like your tent design, i haven't seen that one before. May i ask, what is the face on the middle dark angel?
-
Wonderful figs and backstory Mccoyed! Very stirring. The reverse side of those dragon torsos looks excellent.

Beautiful build Gideon, i'm loving all the architectural details such as the red staggered-slope roofs, gables, corner bricks and windowboxes. The colours work so harmoniously together too. That barricade looks like it's going to be tough to get past!
-
Nice work Bregir! I really like the thatched roof of the cottage and brick-built door. The rearing horse underneath the archway makes for a dramatic shot too!

Aw thanks heaps Ecc! Yeah, the flags - idk, i changed them round and they looked all wrong because of the wind waves. But then, the sails are full, so idk! Maybe i should've stuck with lanteen sails, haha... The GNAR has been a great contest for sure, with so many lovely ships and boats to come out of it. I'm just glad i made time to be a part of it.

Sweet brick-built wyvern Ecc! Love the shape of wings and the neck frills. Must have been a pain to photograph with so much white - it's a bit hard to make out some of the details but you did a great job i reckon. Btw, it might be just me, but i spent ages trying to figure out if those flowers were trans-red or not, before i realised they just had the brown flower 1x1's on top of the red flowers. Subtle!

Excellent stuff Ecc! Love the cart (always nice to see upside down building ) and the trees. Putting one of the trees on a separate base really helps the composition i think - softens that rather straight roadway.

DM, I will give you +1 for City Life, Life in Kaliphlin and Marketplace (for your "West Inner Mpya Stedor in a time of Celebration" moc) Funnily enough i prefer your "Still water" example for your MAESTRO shop, rather than the older moc, and have approved it there. All other credits are in the comments on each moc - please take the time to read through them, as i haven't approved them all.- 343 replies

Nice ship and building DM! So this is Tiffanys for Mitgardia then? (You just need an Audrey Hepburn type wandering by and window shopping now..) GoH +1 for Still water, Trade by sea and Oceanside. Sorry but i'm going to have to pass on Life in Mitgardia, as the moc seems devoid of context by itself - the building could easily be in Mpya Stedor were it not for it's place in Kabel's layout, and i'm not going to include another person's work in my assessment.

Ch II: Team DeGothia: Cat A: An Avalonian Blood Vessel
Gabe replied to Thomas of Tortuga's topic in Guilds of Historica
Ah, genius concept Thomas! The immunologist in me is dancing with glee to see this - Harold the leukocyte indeed! (Took a cytotoxin to the nucleus, may we ever remember their sacrifice) Great use of the Galaxy quest squad alien critters, and your blood vessel architecture makes an excellent background too. UoP - Do you mean microscale? Cause this is kinda the opposite of microscale - super macroscale maybe?- 30 replies

Ch II: Team DeGothia: Cat B: Treating the Sick
Gabe replied to Gideon's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great scene Gideon, so clean and uncluttered. The way you have placed the beds precisely below those lovely gothic arch windows makes everything seem so ordered and regular (much like you'd expect a hospital to be), but when you look closer, each bed and their occupant has their own drama and story to tell. Bravo!- 30 replies

Beautiful Gideon, such an impressive build! I love the height you have acheived, and the lighting effect, especially with the smoke plume, is just spectacular. The subtle colour gradations in the scattered 1x1 rounds for the water work well too.

Ah, i see! Yeah, transporting mocs can be a real pain - i'm kinda glad that i don't tend to keep things together for very long. The thought of having to do all that dusting for a start! Never mind the running repairs every time you move it. UoP +1 for studs-up rocks, interior design (for that sweet assasian training room!), fortifications and mountains.

Mpya Stedor: The Library & The Gate of Amenor
Gabe replied to Maxim I's topic in Guilds of Historica
Ah, thanks DM for the wikia link - i do remember now you talking about the origins of Lord Samu, but that was quite some time ago. As for your pj's, my theory is that you want to dream of kicking some more hippies! UoP, +1 for the roofing technique (on the gate i presume?). Sadly i will pass on the others for now, for the following reasons: Advanced windows - all the windows i can see are studs-up construction, some made out of custom window elements as well, so not complex enough, sorry. Art - i assume you mean the library? If you are going to claim a building as art, you should be able to show the building being used for it's function - a play being performed in a playhouse, an art show in a gallery, a concert in a concert hall etc. Your lack of an interior showing the library being used for it's function hurts your cause here.. if indeed a library's function can be classified as art rather than education, which is contentious. Forced perspective - i would classify this as "suggested perspective", as the edge of your rockwork could be interpreted as either being next to the library and gate (what i first assumed, since the line of rockwork is in contact with the buildings from their base to their roof), or as a distant mountain range. In my opinion, the illusion of the mountain range is not forced strongly enough upon the viewer - and tbh, FP is something that is generally going to be harder than average to pull off at this scale. A small diorama might be better to attempt this credit with. Hope all of that makes sense!- 18 replies

Haha omg wow, i can tell that diplomacy is your strong point Damaximus! (So that's why your siggy is snoozing by the wall in your library moc - obviously hoping to have this dream again! Heh.) UoP +1 credits for Minifig posing (kicked that one in, haha, seriously, nice job on that last pic), life in Avalonia and Country life... however i'll pass on waves as there isn't much of it and what there is looks more like a ripple than a wave.

Ah, Tomsche, you got it finished! Looks pretty good. The highlights are definitely the nice figs and the golden embellishments on the tower. The pheonix shape on the roof works well too considering the little space you had to work with. I still reckon you could have spruced up the roof ends with some ornate roof rakes, that would have looked pretty sweet. I have to agree with Gideon about the path too, although the rest of the landscaping is interestingly varied.

UoP votes work this way: If you get 4 votes in favour you pass, but if you get 3 vetos, even if you already have 4 votes in favour already, then you must try again for that credit. Hope that helps! I see that you only have 3 votes in total so far on this - if you like i'll go through the UoP rego thread and try to jog some ppl into getting this properly assessed, unless you want to withdraw for that credit and try again as you mention above?
