Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Happy new year guildies! Hope everyone is well and saw in 2014 in style (or comfort, if that is more your thing! ). Just popped by to update the UoP stuff that needs sorting: Carson Haupt - needs votes for extreme environs (needs 1), studs up rocks (needs 1) Kayne - needs votes for SNOT'ed tile work, round walls/towers, 1x tree and Life in Nocturnus - 1 vote for all needed Tomsche - needs votes for flowing water (4 needed, 2 against) and minifig posing (2 needed). my Stranglehold tower still needs 1 vote for both studs up and sideways rocks, if someone could rule on that please? Wedge09 is still waiting on 2 votes for or 1 against for microscale - Kayne, myself, gedren and Gideon have voted, can someone else pls look at it? Thanks! Wedge09 is also looking for one vote for both battle scene and minifig posing for his "If you don't want to align..." Torgar is looking for 2 votes for roofing, wall techniques, round walls and millitary science for his "Raven's Aerie" mrcp6d is looking for votes on a few of his mocs, some of them quite old now! Mitgardian fishing trip (needs 1), Retreving Blue Stinger wings (needs 1), Mages Barracks Phase 1 (needs 1 for roof rake, mountains/cliffs and tree, 2 for 1x1 round wall). Please, if the last respondant to the thread is over 2 weeks ago, could you please PM the builder with your vote rather than needlessly bump the thread? PM me as well so i can update the outstanding list with your votes - thanks! Oh and mrcp6d also needs 1 vote for Chopping Wood. We are still relying on 3-4 members to do the bulk of the voting - thanks Gedren, Gideon and Kayne for your stirling efforts! If no-one else from Kali is able, then perhaps the time has come to ask one or two ppl from the other guilds if they want to step up and help us out... what do you peeps think? I just don't want this list to grow any longer! -
Boat studs, better known as Plate round 2x2 with rounded bottom . So called as they are often put on the bottom of ship sets so you can zoom them around on the carpet.
-
Lovely little diorama mrcp6d, with lots of detail and personality. The irregular base really tightens the composition and makes the elements of the scene stand out. UoP +1 for all claims.
-
I'm really enjoying this "tilted" method of making cliff-faces, it really does give a sense of the precariousness of the slope. The mossy patches on the rock look great too. But of course the highlight of the build is that magnificent bird swooping in for the kill - some superb shaping and textures in there! UoP +1 for all claims.
-
What a beauty Torgar! Really nice rockwork and landscaping. The tower really does have a desolate, windswept atmosphere to it. UoP +1 to all your claims for sure.
-
Lovely little township Soccerkid! I like how different the three buildings are and the full interiors, although cramped, do look really neat! It was hard to see your stained glass, but finally i found some pics. UoP +1 for all 3 catagories. ps. Just fyi, there is a way to do offset half-timbering (like you have on your tan building) with 1x1 corner posts rather than the 1x2 you have here... it does involve a bit of snot to get around the corner and still be able to put plates on top tho, so you'll need to have even brick hights for that story.

Book II-Challenge I-Category C: If you don't want to align...
Gabe replied to Wedge09's topic in Guilds of Historica
A well set up scene, the landscaping is nicely done and the minifig posing is dynamic. UoP +1 for both claims. I was a little confused by your description though, it looks from the pic that the Spire mercenaries are doing the ambushing as they are occupying the higher ground? They may have been pushed back to a defensive position i guess, but in that case i would expect to see more casualties from the fighting - this looks like the fight is just starting. -
Very well illustrated backstory! UoP+1 for the tree in the group shot.

Very nice little scene Capt Haupt! Not sure why you claimed for dense foliage with your other moc when you have demonstrated it so convincingly here? Anyway, UoP +1 for all your claims with this, all the little details are great and the overall look is very pleasing too. Although that poor lady is heading for a bad back, what with the way she's doing the gardening! ps. you will still need one more Kali vote for your claims! (4 in favour or 3 against)

Excellent work on the laden horse, looks great and well packed down, especially the front view. Regarding your UoP claim for dense foliage, i think i would prefer to see more than just one type of foliage represented. Inclusion of other foliage parts, flowers, different stories of undergrowth etc would all help you here.

Book II, Challenge I, Cat A - Ambush from the Waves
Gabe replied to Tomsche's topic in Guilds of Historica
Hey Tomsche, if you want to get the Kaliphlin ppl to vote on your UoP claims then you should add this topic to the rego thread! That way we can easily see which mocs need assessing. Ok, with that said, i'm happy to give you +1 on minifig posing - both figs here really look the part with some nice action. However, i would rather see something more descriptive for flowing water... what you have here could be anything - calm ocean, lake, river etc. (The splash from the fish-man i read as part of the minifig posing, not the landscape in general) To give you some more ideas, flowing water generally has a gradient, or flowing direction lines, or sections of broken water that read as moving from one place to another. The trick is less to do with what techniques you use, and more how you put them together. With regards to your photography, it looks like you are getting plenty of light, but you are still getting out of focus and grainy pics. Are you taking pics handheld? Unless you have super steady hands or some kind of image stabilisation on your camera, a tripod might be the way to go. This will let you drop the shutter speed so you don't have to shoot at super high ISO's, and hopefully that will help to fix the grainy look as well. Also, a good photo editing setup is pretty important - what do you use? -
Great stuff Kayne! I really like the action and the range of foliage in the first moc. The tower is cool too - very substantial looking with those high butresses supporting it, and the squat tree next to it complements it well. But the dragonmen steal the show for me - super combos! UoP: +1 for all cats.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice cards! I agree with Lord Vladivus, it would be really cool to see a whole set. Yeah Xmas is taking over here for sure - tomorrow morning me and my partner are heading out for a bush Christmas so i'll be gone for a bit. And when i get back i've got heaps of stuff to prepare for Brickvention 2014, so i'm afraid i won't be able to do much GoH building until the end of Jan. But i'll be popping by the forums now and then to check stuff out and comment etc. I seem to have fallen behind on the UoP reminders - sorry peeps! There have been a few recent mocs that haven't been added to the UoP rego thread but are still claiming for credits. Specifics are: Carson Haupt - needs votes for extreme environs (needs 3), studs up rocks (needs 3) and sand dunes (needs 4 or 2 against) mrcp6d - mrcp6d's is ok for votes but still not added to rego thread. Kayne - needs votes for SNOT'ed tile work, round walls/towers, 1x tree and Life in Nocturnus - 1 vote for all needed (after i go and vote lol ) Tomsche - needs votes for flowing water and minifig posing - 4 for both. Oh and my Stranglehold tower still needs 1 vote for both studs up and sideways rocks, if someone could rule on that please? Also Wedge09 is still waiting on 2 votes for or 1 against for microscale - Kayne, myself, gedren and Gideon have voted, can someone else pls look at it? Thanks! Anything older that still needs looking at that i might have missed? Ah that's sad - hopefully we'll see you back again when you have some more time Masa - we'll miss you! Have a great Xmas/holiday season/solstice everyone! I better go... i haven't packed yet! -
Really nice little vignette - i like your unconventional colour choices, they do look inhospitable! Go team Black Spire! UoP: +1 for studs up rocks and extreme environs, both simple but very effective. I would like to see more contouring for sand dunes though - as it is, it just looks like a gentle gradient rather than heaped up sand drifts. (Btw, you should put a link to this topic in the UoP registration thread if you want it to be assessed. Otherwise it might get missed.)

This is such a great scene, full of life, humour and drama, and the background suits it perfectly. The regular studded floor is a little distracting from the surrounding level of detail i agree, although i think keeping the floor a lighter colour was a good choice. Maybe some scattered tan boat studs and 1x1 rounds would help break it up a bit maybe? Anyway, not sure if you have enough UoP votes yet, but +1 to 'em all anyways! (ps. Don't forget to add your UoP claims/links to the registration thread! )

I really enjoyed this, such an unusual structure and the action pics are all excellent. (I really like that dark shot with the lit-up gate) The use of the massed white flower peices for snow looks amazing! I enjoyed the ideas in the story as well, although you could shorten it a bit to make for a punchier read that matches the pace of the battle.
-
Ahh... yes that would make the lava section rather unstable! Also would affect the light coming through several plates thickness. Did you know that you can get 16x16 trans-clear baseplates? That could go some way to solving your stability issues.

RESULTS INCLUDED: Book II- Challenge 1- The Battle for Nocturnus.
Gabe replied to ZCerberus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Oops, forgot to post my challenge 1, cat B entry here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=89623 -
I was going to link to the same article too, but mrcp6d beat me to it! Lots in there to get one thinking. Thanks! Yeah, borrow away, it's not like i own the technique or anything. I was actually trying to channel Ecc a bit with my tower capping in this moc, i really admire the style and finish he brings to his towers. Brickforge is the place to go. They have some pretty nice stuff, it's easy to spend a fair bit of money there. Thanks deGothia! I'm glad that you think the tower works organically with the underlying rockwork, that was exactly the look i was going for. Thanks Ecc! You mean the Voldemort head? Yeah I tried the ghost warrior with a "evil" skull head first and it still looked too cute, so i swapped it for this one. It's super creepy i love it.

Sounds like you have the perfect excuse to get involved in GoH and create your own shadow knight force. But seriously, a lot of ppl here mix and match elements from a wide range of themes - i'm sure i've seen the shields pop up somewhere, certainly the helmets do (used them on my hand of corruption soldiers in my latest moc) and gedren has already referenced the torsos. Maybe the original figs haven't been used in thier entirity in GoH, but that doesn't mean that they have been forgotton. ps. i'm not sure how many GoH mocs have been posted thus far but i question the assertion that it numbers in the thousands. Certainly there aren't that many builders! Maybe a cast of thousands of minifigs? pps. Do you guys really say porch instead of veranda in NZ?
-
Ahh... so many elves! I am super jealous rogueang. Can't decide which clan i like best, they all look awesome. Hope to see some of these in your mocs sometime... i imagine they all have markedly different architecture?
-
Excellent build Z! Kinda looks a little bit like a music box, especially once you know about the spinning bear. I could imagine a little Russian folk tune going really well with this. The ring detail with the curtains was a detail that caught my eye too - very neat!

Lovely scene Wedge! I really like the elevation in this. The waterfall looks very natural and all the foliage looks beautifully lush. Your trees are a little on the simple side, but they do add nice variation to the landscape. UoP +1 for 1 tree type (large arch piece tree), dense foliage and waterfalls.
-
Unreal stuff Legonardo! The detailing and textures you've incorporated are just superb. Such a pleasing palette too - it has a really sunbleached look. Love it!
