Oh yeah... +1 for underwater hydrology and brick built beasts for sure! I wasn't 100% sure about the waves certification, but the angle the boat is on swayed me - clearly there is significant water disturbance if it is being rocked like that, so +1 for waves as well. Nice work - it's a wonderfully dynamic action scene!

+1 for adv SNOT, however i think i'd like to see something more than just a few pillars for the interior design certification. Some furniture like some low benchs or pews set aginst the wall, candalabra or even a catheral notice board etc would go a long way to fufill this. As it is, it just seems a little empty? And as Gideon has said, without knowing you could easily assume it was an outdoor scene.

Hi there Yooha.. just a reminder, only Kaliphlin members can approve builds for Petraea Uni accreditation. (You are a Mitgardian, right?) Thanks for the vote of confidence though! -

Looking good gedren, looking forward to seeing how that progresses. Thirded from me - congrats Ska, hope the day went well! -
Yeah, i understand that the windows in the front tower have some snotwork going on, that's why i gave you +1 for it. But yes, the effect is quite simple, even if it wasn't easy to do. In some ways what you have done is quite tricky, using different building styles to achieve much the same effect, but it would be nice to see a window shape or style that *couldn't* be otherwise acheived by normal studs-up building.

Petraea University - Grand lecture theatre and debating hall

Thanks Kai! You did indeed. Thankyou, i'm glad you enjoyed seeing it! Thanks NM - yeah i suppose i could have squeezed another cert in, but i don't want to rush the course too much! Besides, i want to try something else for round towers. -
very nice little build Garmadon! The first shot works so well with it's low perspective - makes the greenery seem less sparse and you really get a sense of the water running towards you. I like the slight tilt on the trees at the back too, helps to convey a sense of rising ground. +1 for flowing water and minifig posing.

Kaliphlin vs. Mitgardia (Microfigure Tournament)
Gabe replied to Kai NRG's topic in Guilds of Historica
Very clever build Kai! I do enjoy your microscale. The whole thing kinda reminds me of the Kingdoms Joust set. Oh and +1 for microscale for sure. I think we also need to make a new catagory just for you... microfigure posing! -
+1 Sideways rocks. I think Kai meant she was claiming the cert. "Sideways rocks" in the Landscape design discipline.
-
+1 on snotted stonework and waterfall. I'll also give +1 for adv windows, but i would prefer to see something more ambitious being attempted for that catagory.

+1 on your stonework texture and minifig posing. I can't believe i haven't commented on this either - it's such a impressive moc. I like the subtle angle of the left side of the wall, the cross-section and all the realistic looking battle damage.

Hooray! Congrats to NM for all his hard work on the wiki. Petraea University - Grand lecture theatre - Would like advanced credit for 1 roofing technique (architecture), interior design and complex snotted floor design please. (general building) = 3 credits. Ah, it feels good to be an undergrad again! Now, which way to the pub?- 343 replies

Thanks guys! Glad that you liked my little build. :)

These are some really sweet designs and variations! Like others, i am particularly enamoured of the first one with the beards used as wings. Btw, is that last one supposed to be a bird too, or perhaps a tortoise??
-
Thanks! Yeah, the revision looks prettier i agree. It's hard to get a stable foot connection that doesn't look super-clunky. Thankyou! I do like building birds, i'm planning to build one with wings outstretched next, that'll certainly be a challenge. Haha thanks! I was experimenting with Nocturnus (GoH) trees and this came out - fun to build and pretty strong too. Cheers Taz! Aw i wouldn't count yrself out at all, you've had some sweet builds this year. I can't wait to see what you bring to BV! Thanks! We have heaps of them around our place too, they sit in the plum tree in our backyard and make a terrible racket. They are a delight to watch tho, so we don't mind.

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Ok, how is this for an intro photo? Dean and Assistant Dean welcoming students from all the 5 guilds. (yes i know that we won't attract too any Valyrian students to begin with, but who knows? The guild might get opened up for members some day and we should be inclusive from the get-go, right? ) note: Not bright enough perhaps? Should i brighten it up some more do you think?? Ah, but when it comes to higher learning, there is no place for petty inter-guild rivalrys! What are we all here for, if not to improve ourselves as builders? -
Hi all! I just wanted to share my latest creation, the Rainbow Lorikeet. I recently took this model to a Lego show in Melbourne, but as i initially built it in a bit of rush, i wanted to refine it when i got it home. I changed to feet to make them look more realistic - they aren't actually connected to the branch, the bird is just resting there. It's stable enough to slide around on a table (very gently!), but that's about all it can withstand. I also changed the shape of the back of the wing and the end of the beak. I also changed the angle of the branch from the WIP so that the bird sits more squarely over the middle of the base. (before it was set back at the edge) Adding another hinge to the branch meant that i could get the precise angle i wanted, but does compromise the strength of the support somewhat. I also had to add a couple more studs to the connection with the base. And here is the WIP (the version i took to the Lego show) for comparison! I shall probably take this model to Brickvention in Jan next year, which will mean replacing the branch support and changing the feet connection again. Thankyou for reading, i hope you have enjoyed looking at my build! I welcome your feedback and any suggestions on how i can improve my model.

Ok, i'm going to have a stab a couple of definitions: Advanced SNOT - A build where any (1 or 2? depends on how hard we want to make it) of the following conditions is met: a) studs in 3 or more directions, b) studs on angles other than 90 or 180 degrees to the perpendicular, c) the majority of studs in the build in a non-vertical direction (eg. sideways or upside down building) or d) the use of anti-studs as texture in signifigent sections of the build. (Ref. here) Brick built animals - Show competence in realistically rendering animals made out of greater than 10 elements each. Scale can be whatever the builder desires. note: number of elements was taken from the rooster in set 10193+1, as a guide to the complexity of the build required. Should we make it more complex than this do you think, or is this a good benchmark? Reviewing guidelines - Moc must not only show competence in the subjects being assessed, but consistent effort and attention (although not neccacerily competence) must be displayed in all other areas of the Moc as well. (eg. a well constructed house on a baseplate with no surroundings would be invited to re-submit for architectural subjects) In addition, Mocs which bring the good name of Petraea University into disrepute will also be invited to re-submit. (for instance, i can imagine someone cheekily making a moc that shows university staff in compromising situations etc. Just a clause to protect the reputation of the uni.) Just a thought: should we institute a "board of appeals" if the builder feels that they have been unfairly assessed on a subject or subjects? Sort of like a tribunal of a few (3 to 5 maybe?) Kali members who will rule on any disputes. Oh and i am totes fine with pics of my lecture theatre being used for the launch. (I can take more pics if ppl would like different close-ups? Maybe a generic member of each guild being welcomed to the uni by the dean etc?) Saves ppl having to build something from scratch! ps. I reckon we should go with "Doctorate of Historica" degree program, as it seems more accurate given the title one ends up achieving when they complete the course. pps. Can we add "movement and lighting" to the General building (other techniques) section? Stuff like light bricks and LED's, PF's, even brickfilms if anyone wants to go down that road! -
Genius build! Such lovely little vignettes and the map on the back is super-sweet. I really like the recessed writing on the front of the model too. Agreed, that thought did occur to me as well. Hmm, not sure that i could agree with you on the "limited choice of parts" thing. The CM's themselves have been a incredible boon for builders with new minifig parts and accessories, and that's not including custom parts that are commericially available! Representing multiple cultures in a linear timeline does represent a challenge, but i certainly don't think it should be relegated to the too hard basket.
