Newb Question - Regarding Black Falcon use in Historica.
Gabe replied to DungeonsAndFlagons's topic in Guilds of Historica
Good choice mate! Welcome aboard - it's a bit quiet in the guild thread atm, but that will pick up soon as GNAR and challenge II entries start rolling in. -
So amazing Kabel! Lovely to see all those ships together in harbour. Your town hall is looking very promising - i think the reds was a good choice for the roof.
-
Beautiful boat MassEditor, really nice shaping on the hull and i love all the details like the grappling hooks and decorative prow etc. I'm also impressed that you managed to make your main colour dark brown! It looks great. Wonderful presentation too, from the swamp build to the spooky dry ice shots!
-
Very interesting shape Bregir! I really like the idea of the "leg powered boost" for the oarsmen. The colours really stand out too - especially the red stripe at the waterline and the oars. It would be cool to see it all rigged and under sail though. UoP +1 for shipping by water - i'll give it to you for the addition of the elf cargo boat, although i guess you could also say that the patrol boat is also shipping justice?

Nice to see some big ships in the GNAR challenge - she's a beauty mccoyed! Congrats on building your first as well. The profile looks great and i really like your crew members and all the detail you've managed to put on the deck. The sails look really nice too. I think the weakest parts of the build would have to be the blocky stern (really noticable when seen from the back) and some of the steps in the bow hull as you are trying to get that curve. The big curved wedge parts hide a lot, but it is still a bit gappy. One thing you could try to do to avoid that next time is to make an entirely brick-built bow, although that approach can turn out to be quite parts intensive. I'll have to pass this time on the advanced windows credit for UoP - i'd like to see more than you've done here for that. (For clarification, i would be looking more for windows that are built out of parts that are not purpose specific, ie. without the use of the Lego window frame elements - SNOT, NPU or offsets in your brick built window frames are also highly encouraged)

Newb Question - Regarding Black Falcon use in Historica.
Gabe replied to DungeonsAndFlagons's topic in Guilds of Historica
Easy answer is use them wherever you like! Although the main Kaliphlin army seems to favour lion heraldry, my Peregrinian (eastern promontory of Kaliplhin) forces have falcon crests, and i know ppl in other guilds have used Black Falcons too. It always helps to have a little splash of your guild's colours in your forces, but it's not so tightly prescribed here in Historica - the aim of the game is more to get ppl to use what they have, rather than have to buy a lot of one thing or another to fit in. Of course if you're looking for a guild, i would have to recommend Kaliphlin as being the most diverse! -
I really love this Kai, it's so unique! The round towers worked out great and i don't mind the lack of roof on top of them - it kinda fits in with the whole dream sequence feel that the scene has. (Oddly though, the black ramparts between the walls does bug me a bit... it seems so stark against the colourful exterior. Idk) The water looks great although i'm not sure that i'd call them waves - more a gentle ripple, really. UoP +1 for the wall technique and round tower technique (nicely done too!). Art was a category that i hummed and hawed about for a bit, but in the end was swayed by how convincing this was as a dream sequence. It may not be an expression of Historica culture in the way that the category intends, but art is all about the unexpected, and this certainly fits the bill in that regard! Waves i think i will abstain on for now - i would like to see some more dramatic water movement for that one.

AoM Stables Phase III - To Horse! (HoM Entry)
Gabe replied to Garmadon's topic in Guilds of Historica
I agree with kabel, this is one of your best Moc's to date (that i've seen, anyway), very clean and well composed. Great job with posing the mounting horsemen, they look very dynamic! The courtyard and half-timbered style of the building next to the stables is very nice also. It would have been nice to see some more evenly lit photos though, as it is rather hard to pick out the detail in the deep shadows. UoP +1 for Fortifications and Life in Mitgardia, however i would like to see something more for the Advanced window frames credit. (For clarification, i would be looking more for windows that are built out of parts that are not purpose specific, ie. without the use of the Lego window frame elements - SNOT, NPU or offsets in your brick built window frames are also highly encouraged)- 18 replies

Great build, i really like the bustling atmosphere and the way it opens to show the underground levels. Totes happy to give you UoP +1 for the city scene credit, but i'm less sure about the governing body one... if anything, it seems closer to the arresting criminals/jail/punishment category? (assuming that the gladiators are all from the criminal classes!)
-
Nice entries! I really like the humour in Kai's and Mike's builds (the best of friends never mind a little dig at their expense now and then, right? ), but my fav would have to be Gideon's for the excellent build.

You have a really good eye for making custom figs mccoyed, these, although less inventive than others i've seen on your Flickr page, look really cool with their custom capes and shiny armbands. The small training vig you've shown them in is quite impressive for the small footprint - good ground texture, nice height on the tree and a realistic colour palette provide a solid setting for some quite dramatic minifig action. Nice work! UoP +1 for one tree type (You will need two more), Life in Mitgardia and minifig posing. ps. I have to say though, those sideways cones on the base make me think of tabletop soccer! That would be kinda cool, if you could twist the cones and make them fight...
-
Very distinctive faction, mccoyed! I really like the figure combinations. (What is the bridle piece btw, is it from the friends sets?) The irregular base really conveys the feel of them travelling along some narrow mountain pass or rough terrain. This is awesome, but is kind of at odds with your UoP claim of desert geography, so i'll have to pass on giving you that credit. Happy to give you +1 for the others though.

That is seriously cool! My partner is an avid gardener, she would love this.

Yeah i know what you mean - it's not only the circular nature of the structures, but also the fact that they are fluted as well that makes things tricky - plus there is all that ornamentation and odd shaped windows and doorways to consider. If you don't mind, i'd love to chat some more about this in PM - i've got some ideas that i'd love to bounce around with you, considering we are working on similar things.
-
Thankyou very much Tomsche, that's very kind of you! Off-topic, but i couldn't help but notice that on your blog you listed one of your goals as building a Lego Silvermoon city - now there's an architectural challenge! (I have some screenshots of Fairbreeze village in my "moc references" folder, and have been tinkering about with trying to realise those forms for a little while now)

Cool pair of vigs deGothia! Good to see the kids are seeing some more of Historica. The angled plates on the Mitgardia build look very nice, and your reference to Gideon's build in the Kaliphlin vig was instantly recognisable... nicely played!
-
Really cool warlord MassEditor! I really like the different layers in your vig, each showing a different side to your character. The seige weapons have to be my fav part of the build - such good designs, compact but very functional looking.

Thanks fellows for the kind words, glad you like it!

Wow, what a wonderful moc! Love the gradually rising path and the gatehouse. Those conical roofs are great!

Giving credit where credit is due... or not
Gabe replied to AmperZand's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Idk, this issue of credit is one that i simultaneously feel strongly for in certain cases, but most of the time it just irritates the hell out of me. Mainly because some builders (without pointing the finger at any one group, but you know they are out there) get hung up on specific techniques to the exclusion of just about every element and principle of design you could think of. Composition? What's that. Use of unexpected colour and texture? Who needs that when you have an awesum!! technique that no-one has seen before, something that you can put your great dirty mark all over and demand recognition for. Every now and then though, it has to be said that there are builders who come along with genuine game changers, ppl like Katie Walker for instance with her mosaics, or Luke Watkins (Derfel Cadarn) with his exhaustive guide to building a medieval village. These builders really do advance the knowledge and skills of others in concrete ways, and should be credited for that. Certainly if i see a technique that allows me to do something that i couldn't see a way to do before, i will credit if i use or adapt it. But those circumstances are generally the exception rather than the rule.- 9 replies

This is quite a large, texture-rich building Scaevola! In some ways the effect is a little dizzying, but i think that suits the Kaliphlin love of ornamentation very well. I do like the corner view in particular. One thing that you might want to consider next time is hiding the white background from between the open doorways and windows - it tends to break the illusion that this is a solid building. A hinged or removable back is a good option if you still want access to the interior. Another area that you could work on is your photography - both controlling your depth of field to get the things that are meant to be in focus nice and sharp, and photo-editing to increase brightness and mask out unwanted background (such as the trees above your backing board). GIMP is a great photo editor and is free to download - i usually use Photoshop but had to switch to GIMP recently and was very impressed.

Nice sheep design UtilityBelt! But you might want to consider the placement a little more the next time - in your first shot we get a nice view of the shepherd but we only see the sheep's bum; whereas in the second we get a good side view of the sheep but the shepherd is partially obscured and out of focus. Compositional issues like that can really make or break a moc, especially a small one where you might have only a couple of vantage points to work with. Good work on the tree revision btw, even that little bit of extra hight makes a real difference.

Prolouge, Kael's story, part 1, The dead son.
Gabe replied to mechamike's topic in Guilds of Historica
Yes, you are definitely on the right track! Scrambling up plate depths and using cheese slopes to break up the straight lines is a great start. Don't be afraid to use other elements such as 1x1 rounds, tiles, and curved slopes to create changes in texture too - this can be used to great effect in a monochromatic landscape like snow, but is generally useful for all types of landscaping. Thanks for including the other pics - both are interesting views in themselves and worth showing. I really like the little cave at the back that narrows to rock and then still further to blackness... it has a real sense of mystery to it. It would be interesting to see this view with the dramatism of the figures in the background, perhaps it would tie into the mystical nature of the visions that your sigfig has? A reminder of the unknown reaches that his journey will take him to? Ok, i'm going off on a tangent now but you get my (snow)drift. I get where you are coming from with having a limited amount of parts to work with - i don't know what your collection is like but i acutely remember the frustration of being limited in my techniques simply b/cause i didn't have hundreds of one particular part to use. But that kind of restriction can be very fruitful creatively, as you search for different solutions to solve the problem in front of you. (it's also a great excuse to get stuck into some microscale ) Anyway i fear i'm rambling a bit now so i better head to bed (it's late here). I look forward to seeing your next installment of the story!- 17 replies

Thanks mrcp6d, glad you like it! Do you mean the log bricks used on the spars? I kinda like the texture on them actually. The parts themselves are not too bad as "log cabin" bricks if you turn them on their side, but really i just see them as another texture brick. Thanks for the kind words and encouragement MassEditor!

Good solid build Wedge, the vegetation is artfully done. I like the realistic looking hight on your cliff face as well. The little tree on top of the cliff could use some development though. UoP +1 for studs-up rocks.
