Freebuild: How to stop the Algus

Every time I look at it my eyes are drawn to the beautiful clean lines of the roofs and their tiles.

Book 2 Challenge V Cat B: Statue of Doom

It looks so cool! But what does it do???

    Ambushing the Spire

Finally the conflict begins to warm up again with a very convincing skirmish. The rockwork and posing are really nice.
  4. Nice to see someone have to deal with the realities of travelling the swamps of Nocturnus.
  5. I like this as a semi magical area that was forced to adapt to the presence of the oil pits. The vegetation is strange but I think it works. I really like the rider. Is that torso from Chima?

    Valahadrian

This is lovely and really looks organic and grown. The vegetation is lovely and lush. To solve the problem some have said of monotonous vegetation do you think swapping the slim trees on the right of the build might help bring some alternative green forward and to the eye? With the lighter colored tree at the front it breaks up the monopoly of darker greens around the front of the build.
  7. That eagle is beautiful and practical which I always like! I like to see that it isn't just evil with gigantic creatures and monsters to call upon. The wall and tower are lover with the different color and textures of stone. The only thing I don't like is the way the tower juts from the wall with exposed entrances. It just seems a vulnerability of the design.

    Bk.2-Ch.V-Cat.A "Skybridge"

This build has a real atmosphere to it. The height of the bridge and waterfall and the lighting are really dramatic. It nicely shows the risks taken by the desperate messengers.
  9. It's nice to see that the heroism of the messenger was not in vain. And also to see ordinary Mitgardians going about their lives.
  10. The stream and bridge are my favorite parts. It has a lovely looking flow to the water.
  11. Nice story and a simple but effective forced perspective build. I like builds and stories that tie the realms of Historica together and make the events and places feel connected rather than going on in separate bubbles.
  12. Rolf Magnar was on his way home from one of the plots he worked when he heard hooves coming down the path. Stepping aside onto a verge he turned and saw a dark rider slowly come down the road towards him. It stopped and the rider leaned forward in the saddle with a pained expression. The rider seemed to have difficulty speaking. It slumped awkwardly and red blood and gore flowed from its back. With and effort it spoke two words before toppling from the saddle. "Spire...Beginsss..." So this is what you get if you get a stupid phrase and scene from a movie stuck in your head. Even my loving girlfriend who regularly laughs at may bad puns told me this one wasn't as clever as I thought it was but I had to make it.
  13. Hassan M'badwe, High Judge of Khadira and bearer of the Mace of Watombe, current master of Khadira while Muakhah is off conducting delicate negotiations, personally hands a letter written by Muakhah to the Khadiran courier who will ride to Kaligem and the Desert King. The colors of the Desert King and Kaliphlim flutter in the breeze. The courier has a second steed with saddle bags and supplies for the long journey. Once the saddle bags are less weighty he will alternate mounts to avoid tiring one steed more. A groom feeds to horses a special oatcake prepared for horses with long distance journeys ahead of them. A selection of Khadiran soldiers are also present as Khadira girds itself for the coming struggle. The Khadiran Couriers are swift and skilled riders, trained to destroy their messages rather than let them fall into enemy hands. However, should this letter be captured you might read the following. To his Majesty, Ark,Mora Raa, Lord of the Desert and Master of Kaliphlim, Blessed of Mazadar and Great Hope of the Light. No doubt you know of the news sweeping the land, the Heir of Cedrica is found. This could mean that Historica has one King again. Perhaps this heir will prove worthy and we shall be honored to bend the knee, and perhaps not. Know now that as long as his Majesty Ark,Mora Raa holds true to his principles of Benevolence and Humility tempering Power and Strength and acts as a force for good in the eternal struggle with evil. Then Khadira shall hold its allegiance first and foremost to the true Lord of Kaliphlim, and perhaps in time, Historica. May you be a source of good deeds. May you tip the scales against evil. Your Humble Servant Muakhah of Khadira This was my first snotwork piece and I am pleased with how it came out. I will certainly try more in the future and have a few ideas. I will try and use Hassan M'badwe as a stand in sigfig until I get Muakhah back. Muakhah's character is a bit of a philosopher/prophet/ruler inspired by Zoroaster. Let me know what you think and any comments or criticisms. I think it is a bit flat thought the flags and weapons help slightly.

    Gideon's GoH Build Index

It was the Streets of Barqa that got me truly hooked on guilds of historica.
  15. Sadly it was thrown together and the landscape isn't great. That's what you get for rushing! Thanks for humoring me though.
  16. Please Find my entry for the Alliance: Death to the Spire! And a less serious Spire entry:
  17. Thanks! Like many things in life it was the fear of failure holding me back from trying snot...but now... Ah the old fleshies vs yellows debate. I'll share my thoughts on it at some point. Now I look at it again though it is clear that I put too many different soldier variants. 3 guys in the same simple uniform with similar weapons would have been better. Thanks Windusky! Just a taste of the armies Khadira is assembling. Thanks, The mace is one of my favorites too. Simple and effective and I think matches the character well. Cheers, it does seem that people have a marmite approach to which to use, fleshy or yellow. I got love for them all. Thanks, I am glad the cobbles turned out ok, and that I scrounged up some slightly different colors. Thanks Slegengr. I hope I can make something to expand on the story of the Mace of Watombe and how Hassan came to bear it. Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. I guess the main thing that will infuriate people in many of my builds to come is that I will mix fleshies and yellows. I see Historica as an amazingly varied land with all manner of variety. There are excellent yellow figures and with more and more movie sets there are better and better fleshies. I like the new varieties of skin tones too. My collection is predominantly yellow but I am adding others. To me it doesn't make sense to pick and choose which skin tones are acceptable in Khadira. All are welcome and I think eventually people will adjust to seeing them mixed together. (I hope) Thanks again!

Chapter V, Book II: Searching for Hope

This is such a wonderful build in so many ways that people mentioned already. My own take on it from the story is this general has travelled the length and breadth of historica and his mansion represents reflections of what he has seen. The pillars at the base remind me of Arabic and Indian ... cough... sorry Kaliphlim pillars and arches recreated with local avalonian timbers. A traditional avalonian structure sits atop this but with a steeply sloped practical mitgardian inspired roof. The powerful black of that roof is reminiscent of Nocturnan roofs. The general may have stopped traveling historica. But he didn't leave historica behind.
  19. Very atmospheric and moody build. Really establishes the ruthless cruelty of the Spire.
  20. Khadira is a once small town on the coast near the Nocturnus border. Having avoided much of the conflict in the Kaliphlim civil war and having accepted an influx of refugees from across Kaliphlim and Nocturnus the town has grown rapidly. While the center of the town undergoes redevelopment the outskirts remain a messy sprawl of buildings. Here people live their lives as best they can despite the unsettled nature of Kaliphlim and the growing threats from Ravaage. Udeen Magrebi runs his open air eatery in a patch of open space outside his small hut. He provides simple hot food to local workers and travelers on a budget. A Khadiran courier, acting as postal service, delivers a letter to a merchant. Just leaving home for the docks or markets the Merchant's home, while simple, is larger and more comfortable than Udeen's simple dwelling. The merchant's wife watches from the terrace upstairs. Dressed in the latest fashion inspired by the Desert King's court she may visit the souqs or coffee houses of Khadira later in the day. Apologies for the simplicity of the builds, the lack of details and textures. I am still waiting for some of my collection to arrive but I had to make something. I had this image in my mind for some time and even with my limited skill it comes across quite well. If I were to do it again I would use a wider variety of plates and tiles to give the ground more texture. I also would try and add more texture and different color to the houses. Also there are too many studs on show in general. I am hoping this will count towards developing my own town. I am using the rules in this post as guidelines so there is a lot of work to do. I would count this as Hospitality Food and Drink. The Courier I feel isn't enough alone to justify more. And Food and Drink isn't one of the required ones for a Hamlet so I better get building more.
  21. Great representation of an eastern room. Love the screen. My only gripe is in the story the Desert King was an ally of the Resistance not the Spire. Slander against his mighty majesty.

    Intro: Northern Huntsman

Very characterful and rough wilderness minifigs.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone. The rest of my collection is still slowly traveling by ship so I will stick to smaller stuff and practice the recommended techniques.

    The Mad Dog (Free Build)

I really like where this story is going and look forward to seeing the aftermath of the ambush. For me the ridge is no problem as it reminds me of Roman roads or a well maintained Avalonian path between two estates that cuts into the hillside. Though if well-maintained then how did the ambushers manage to pull this off! Makes me want to know more!
