In short SW movies thrive when it is large scale good vs evil. That’s what makes them special. Not when it’s a self-contained story. Very good observations. Star Wars is all about the long fight between Jedi & Sith, climaxing in the downfall of the biggest villain ever - and that's in ROTJ. Don't know if a Thrawn trilogy would have worked on screen better, but the Disney plot with Luke basically refusing to build a better Jedi order and a Palpatine offspring becoming basically the true chosen one - and not Anakin - is a contradiction I just can't enjoy. I'm still of the opinion that a solid lineup of film and show sets based on Mando is fine, but we didn't really need as many as they gave us. Maybe this (and the Smart Play sets) are an attempt to get a new generation of kids interested in SW? A quick comparison with the lineup for standalone movies would indicate that Disney/Lego plays it safe and reuse mostly successful ideas from the past... Rogue One - 1 wave: 5 sets - 1 remake (AT ST) Rogue One - 2 wave: 4 sets - 1 remake (Y-Wing) / 2 battle packs - 1 location set Solo: 8 sets - 2 remakes (White Falcon, TIE) / 1 battle pack Mandalorian & Grogu: 8 sets - 6 remakes / 0 battle pack - 1 mech As long if we get more playscale and less adult focused sets I'm all for it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a cool and fun film, I really enjoyed the first part but felt it lost momentum once the Crimson Dawn plot fully kicked in. But I’d argue it lacked the grandeur and scale that makes SW movies so memorable. The self-contained story works well for TV shows and Videogames but not movies imo. Movies need to have big good vs evil conflict. And that’s a mistake i fear they’re making again with M&G. It’s also that I’d argue the film lacked a paragon of morals (they really should have used this for Chewie) that the PT, OT and R1 benefitted from with Jedi and Chirrut. If you take away the moral contrast between light and dark it almost removes what makes SW a special mythology. I’d even argue that Shadow Lord wouldn’t have worked as well if Lawson and Daki weren’t present to remind us that Maul is still a villain. Another problem with Solo is that everything we know about Han apparently happens within a month. Quote
BrickBob Studpants Posted May 16 Posted May 16 3 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: That’s why Solo is less memorable than the OT prequels and even Rogue One. Solo just didn’t have the scale or classic light vs dark dilemma. It’s just evil vs slightly less evil vs morally grey. I get your point, but I don’t fully agree. SW does work best when it’s classic good vs evil, but projects like Andor worked too, despite having a remorseless killer as its protagonist And Han is clearly a good guy in Solo, at least in comparison to the morally grey (and sometimes almost villainous) Cassian In my eyes, you don’t necessarily need the light vs dark dynamic to have a good SW show or movie. On the other end of the spectrum, we have The Acolyte where they tried really hard to portray the Jedi as more shady and morally grey than before, even sort of justifying Osha’s fall to the dark side, which rubbed me (and many fans) the wrong way. In that case, moral ambiguity clearly worked against it. I guess my point is that the light vs dark struggle is important to SW, but not the main deciding factor whether a movie or show succeeds Quote

It's a surprise to be sure, but.... anyway, my point's just that it can work at that $10 price point, it'd be nice to get the droids that cheap, and given that it seems to be $10 price point vs $30 for non-gimmick sets I know which I'd rather have it be. We probably won't get one at all next year anyway- there's no room to fit ANH anniversary sets alongside the 501st battle packs, "smart" buildable baby yodas, and $160 Meeber Gascon statue. I'm gonna say over. I feel like it has to be about as big as the ISD, and that would already be... This is my personal version of how prequel fans are fed buckets of clone battle packs with no Dooku or Grievous in sight. I can't find it, but back when rebels ended and they finally mentioned him I remember seeing an edit of that "friendship ended" meme template where it was a photo of Thrawn dapping up Pellaeon and it said "Friendship ended with Arihnda, now Gilad is my best friend" (Which would work better with Vanto instead of Pryce, but presumably the creator was a show only) 3 hours ago, BrickBob Studpants said: I get your point, but I don’t fully agree. (I also think we're meant to think there was at least a significant chance that Thing/micro/the guy from the bear was just testing his loyalty when Cassian shoots him also in cold blood.) And yup- you can read the showrunner's comments and that was literally her goal. She seems to legitimately think that the jedi are the bad guys. There's a way to do moral ambiguity, and it's something like Andor where you have bad people working for the good guys and a decent guy on the wrong side, rather than going "the angels are evil and the demons are good". I get part of CC's point, about scale/spectacle mattering for shows, but I do think a part of it comes down to having memorable villains- they don't need to be pure evil- Dooku, Kylo, and kind of Vader aren't- but they need to be INTERESTING. Dryden just wasn't done well, and I don't think the Mantagonists are going to be remotely memorable either. 5 hours ago, brimbolet said: Very good observations. Yup. I do think the Thrawn trilogy would have worked well, it's a very natural expansion of where you go from ROTJ's ending for the characters. It doesn't bring palpatine back or throw in somebody worse- in fact one of the reasons Thrawn is so threatening is because he's not a Vader who will just choke out whoever reports a failure, he rewards creativity even if it doesn't work and punishes mistreatment of his men, which makes his people fiercely loyal to him. (Though he still will execute incompetent officers) Luke is struggling with his new responsibilities- he's his sister's teacher, he needs to become a Jedi Master, and how does he do that with so little training? In his interactions with C'baoth, he's given a Jedi master who could train his sister and eventually children, but there's clearly something wrong. Having redeemed Vader, how far can Luke go? How much can he try to help before he can accept that some people can't be saved? Leia is stuck with balancing her responsibilities to the new republic, her training as a jedi, and her unborn - and later infant- children. The republic needs her as a counselor in the short term, but the long view would imply having a Jedi is much more important overall. How does she balance that? How can she continue to put herself in danger when it's no longer only her own life on the line, or when she'll leave behind orphans? Han gave it all to the rebellion, but how does someone with his personality fit in a government organization? And how does he maintain the contacts and networks he had as a smuggler, contacts the republic needs, when everyone on the other side of the law assumes he's a narc? (Obviously Chewbacca and the droids are pretty static characters. Lando gets a small arc about helping the republic because they're better for private enterprise than the empire.) Quote

The early reactions are always much more positive than the reception the film ends up getting, so the fact that they're this middling already is really concerning. Yup. It's nice to live through the reviewer sometimes and see everything about the set. Some of the reactions I've seen- even the ones saying it's "fun" - are saying it's pretty obviously two episodes of the show stiched together, which is not good news. That's been exactly my experience, if not a cold stone fact, to me as well. And yes, to see the reception this mediocre already, is actually not too promising to say the least. Yep, always nice to get some entertainment value out of it. I don't necessarily need to buy something to be able to find some enjoyment... even if I sometimes still really want to own it. Yep again, those are my impressions as well. People describe it as an extented episode with obviously above average budget. A light-hearted summer blockbuster you can enjoy if you don't think about it too much. Yeah, I dunno, to me it sounds like take it or leave it. That's not enough to make my rusty older body move to the silver screen. On 5/15/2026 at 10:20 PM, Kaijumeister said: Yep, that's what I meant - the original list released in January. Haha, true enough. I think they're capable of good ideas but those tend to be drowned out by the harebrained ones. Happy for you bud! I know exactly what you mean, it feels like buying an action figure rather than a minifigure when it arrives pre-assembled. That's a really good question! I actually do tend to watch reviews even for sets that feel boring or rehashed, although only by reviewers who frame the review as a discussion and try to offer insightful commentary rather than blindly praising a set in the typical LAN style. I'm the same mindset as you though, if I know I want a set the review isn't going to change my mind. Very rarely has a review actually cemented by decision or lack thereof to go for a set. It doesn't help that most of this year's lineup is just...boring? Fine? Safe? Just mostly devoid of excitement. What I find interesting across LEGO Star Wars reviews this year, especially by LAN members such as Solid Brix, is that there's a universal sense of fatigue with the decisions driving this theme. Ironically the lack of excitement isn't because LEGO Star Wars is past its heyday, but because people just want some good playsets again which the theme simply isn't offering to a satisfactory degree. Oh okay. You meant the time the list originally leaked. Because I would not exactly be opposed to some sets actually releasing in January 2027. Never say no to a great start to kick off a new year. Haha yes, I always say Lego is perfectly capable to make the right decisions. That is just not nearly enough the case. Or like you said goes potential unnoticed because of all the... not so ideal ideas. YES! This is a minifigure. A used minifigure. But a minifigure nonetheless. So you better please treat it as such. I disassemble and assemble it myself anyways, but yes... that's still not the same. I want it in pieces right away. Yeah, I'm sometimes not sure if the predictability and personal lack of impact from reviews (not just Lego) is more because I generally just happen to know what I tend to like and what not or because the review material in question just sorta became too easy to read and you just know what to expect. Might be a fairly bit of both. This has been my perception as well. Solid Brix Studios, to me not among those blinded LAN fanboys who claim every set to be the best thing since sliced bread, has become a bit more critical for a variety of Lego Star Wars sets than he used to be. Hopefully Lego learns the right lessons there. But as long as they're still raking in record profits and their LAN army remains intact and reigns supreme, they likely won't care to make more meaningful changes. Quote

I think a lot of YouTube reviewers have been around long enough for them to want to operate like "serious" critics. A lot of people who start out making videos just to be entertaining or funny find that artistically insufficient after a while. You see this with basically every YouTuber eventually. And it makes sense - people want to be taken seriously. People who make videos often have artistic aspirations. I expect that a lot of legacy Youtubers who have done reviews for a long time will start sounding more like print critics. The form is just maturing. If you only want critics to do things that make you laugh, you might not actually be looking for media criticism. My AT-TE disassembly went O.K. No pleasant surprises and I'm missing a lot of pieces. Including maybe a sticker piece or two. A lot of substitutions appear to have been made as the AT-TE took damage in childhood Lego battles. Bricklink's usually not too bad, just make sure if you use the "easy buy" feature that you go back and check the lowest price for any parts that seem expensive. The program they use seems to heavily overestimate shipping costs, so often it'll try to put everything with one seller even if that seller's charging absurd amounts for some of the pieces. It would cost more to buy P1 Rex than to just get another figless AT-TE, so that's definitely good news. Early TCW Ahsoka without cracks is about $10 on bricklink in the US, so while she's not the cheapest it's certainly anything egregious. (Though honestly, her 2025 figure depicting her -better- S3-5 outfit and with the midi-legs is cheaper, I'd personally just go with that one unless you're wanting to recreate the set 1:1) Quote

So as someone who read HTTE chronologically (most of my other Legends consumption comes from videogames, some comics, KOTOR cinematics, and EckhartsLadder/ Geetsly videos) I just took HTTE Thrawn as an imperial who prioritised the main objective with competence. When I read the trilogy by itself at least. How it feels to yap about Lego TIE Avengers every day: Day #389 of asking for one. I was planning on taking my dad to watch M&G at the cinema this Friday. But after recent reviews (apparently the opening scene is the most cinema worthy part) i’m not sure whether I should wait until D+. I’m just not feeling the hype guys. And that kinda almost scares me. Quote

Doesn't seem worth it when you can watch it on D+ for free, and I say this as someone who generally likes going to the theaters. Quote

(Though honestly, her 2025 figure depicting her -better- S3-5 outfit and with the midi-legs is cheaper, I'd personally just go with that one unless you're wanting to recreate the set 1:1) Yeah Bricklink is where I would look. I haven't bought anything from there before, but it is a useful tool I've used to get an estimate and track pieces when old instruction PDFs are blurry or in error. Thank you for the purchasing tip, I will keep that in mind. The 2025 figure is an interesting suggestion. I think because I haven't bought a lot of Star Wars sets recently, I find the pupil-less eyes strange. Especially for a Clone Wars character where the eyes were always big. (Especially originally for Ahsoka.) I agree that any outfit is better than the first one, though. (And she was a good friend.) Quote

I will permit recent reviews to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the recent reviews have gone there will be nothing. Only hype will remain. Quote

And that kinda almost scares me. That's true, but by that same metric, when people talk about Anakin's story they usually are factoring in the amount of characterization TCW gave him. The Vong aren't mentioned directly in the original HTTE trilogy (though I believe they're discussed in the sequel duology), but I believe Thrawn does explain his general philosophy of being aware of extragalactic threats and the empire being the only power he views as having the potential to deal with those threats. Obviously he's not a good guy, but he's not a Tarkin where he wants the empire to dominate for the sake of it. Same about reevaluating whether or not it makes sense to watch it in theatres. The confirmation that disney wasn't just doing extremely secretive marketing and there really isn't anything deeper going on with the story just makes me disappointed. From everything I've heard it sounds like it's just your standard early-in-the-season Mando arc, rather than the late-season arcs like Return to Navarro or Grogu's Rescue where things start coming together. 3 hours ago, RyansRebuid said: Yeah Bricklink is where I would look. And yeah, no idea what Lucas was thinking with the first outfit. Quote
