Except that said adult usually isn't competing with the kid's wallet, but the wallet of his/her parents. Besides, kids shouldn't get used to just getting everything they want. It's a valuable life lesson, if nothing else.

I agree. The yellow minifigs is part of the traditional LEGO charm. I love the LOTR/Hobbit builds, but I usually sell the minifigs - unless I can de-fleshify them properly. But too often, they have flesh on their torsos. It was the same case with the PoTC theme. It also saddens me that most of the time, their best facial expressions are reserved for flesh-only heads. But I've learned to live with it - as long as they still let us have all the non-licensed sets in the traditional, yellow way.

Female minifigures - do we need the hourglass torso and make up?
Hive replied to williejm's topic in General LEGO Discussion
You do realize that those torsos are representing time periods where such garment was what women typically wore, right? Or, at the very least, what people in their minds thinks women wore back then. It's what people expect to see. Why would LEGO not deliver that? LEGO is a toy company, their job is to deliver what people want/expect so that they can make money. I'm not saying that LEGO shouldn't care about discriminization and the likes, but if you want some sort of feminist revolution, I think it's absurd to expect LEGO - or any other business - to lead it. Male minifig heads are often represented with beards; I, as a male, have a hard time growing anything that even resembles a proper beard. Should I then complain that LEGO is helping paint a picture of beards being an essential part of what makes a man a man? Should I complain that it gives me an inferiority complex? Should I make a case that the large wizard beards gives male children false expectations to their facial hair growth? I wish people didn't try to ruin the innocence of a harmless toy like LEGO as part of their feminist crusade. I'll make the bold claim that LEGO's representation of female - or male - minifigs have never damaged any childs views on the world or themselves. Let's not underestimate children's ability to see a toy for what it is. I'm fairly certain that all children realize that women have breasts regardless of what LEGO does or does not, anyway...- 177 replies

If it's more of the same as the last line, I'd rather they don't. But if it's anything like Kingdoms or Fantasy Castle, I'll be all over it.

This is insanity, we're lucky if discounts in my country makes the sets approach retail US prices.... so jealous....

Hi I'm considering making my first lego.com purchase, to get the amazing (but expensive) 10236 Ewok Village. In that connection, I'd like to become a VIP member to get points - but it seems that I cannot get myself a membership unless I do a purchase. So my question is this: will I get the VIP points for said first purchase, or does it only count onwards from the next purchase? I've never bought such a big set at full retail price before (in fact, it's about twice as expensive as the biggest sets I've gotten so far), so if I'm to do so, I'd at least want the VIP points for it...

Lego 10000 Guarded Inn--New Build & Review
Hive replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
The problem with such a Legends line is that it strictly appeals to nostalgic AFOLs. Put next to a 'modern' box of LEGOs, it simply fades with the simplified design, old-school minifigs and far less varied colours. What they should do, in my opinion, is introduced a Legends line where they create new, modern-style versions of old classics; new parts, new building techniques, new minifigs, new colours, etc... but still in the spirit of the classics from which they come. -
Discussion Should LEGO make a Military Theme?
Hive replied to KisKatona's topic in Special LEGO Themes
When I was a kid, all my favourite toys involved war and conflict in some form - and LEGO was no exception, whether it being Castle, Pirates, Space or City. That said, I think LEGO's stance on real life warfare is a healthy one and that LEGO would lose part of its' innocence should they begin doing tanks and soldiers and the like. I fully support their edict, their abstracted conflicts are enough. -
I strongly disagree with this. It doesn't matter if it's designed as a kids' toy, it's as valid a hobby as anything else one can choose. And one have a right to protect one's hobby and should in no way feel ashamed or guilty about it.

That's a pretty nice score, I must say.

Bilka in Denmark is having their yearly 35 % off sale (used to be 40, before that 50) starting tomorrow. In spite of them "cheapening up" over the years, it's still one of the best LEGO sales around these parts.
-
Exactly. I could see it being a 1-2 wave theme to fill the gap untill PoTC 5.

I agree, the message was about creativity and breaking limitations - but could have been served a bit more thoughtful. Same here, Emmett falling out took a great deal away from my experience watching the movie. I would have prefered "the real world" merely being hinted at and not shown, letting us stay within the LEGO World fantasy.

I didn't really care for most of the POTC sets and figures, but I loved the ships and would welcome more in the same style.

Nice set designs with an interesting concept, but the use of flesh minifigs throws me off. And as The_Cook points out, it would never happen. But I do like the orcs/trolls!

I, for one, would love to see LEGO do something like the 2009 theme again. I thought it was really good, most certainly one of the most impressive "1 year only" themes I've ever seen. And I liked all of the sets, which also had a fair share of variety. While I'd naturally like LEGO to re-introduce Pirates as a lasting theme, I wouldn't mind terribly if they did a 1-year theme with the same quality as the 2009 one.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 12 Rumours and Discussion

Uhm yes, because that's what he is. I too am dissapointed that a set of this pretty large price isn't bigger and doesn't include more minifigs. But I like the colours used and think that Smaug is about as impressive as anyone realistically could have expected. Best molded dragon as of yet, what more can one really ask? It's not an adult-oriented lego.com exclusive, after all.

I regret not buying all the Fantasy Castle and Pirates (2009) lines right as I got out of my Dark Ages, as they were both on clearance and would be gone from shops soon after. At the time, I still wasn't sure I wanted to invest so much money on this newly re-discovered hobby and, at the time, didn't feel like committing to more than one theme... Over the years that followed, I managed to get most of the Pirates line and some (not nearly enough thoug!) of Fantasy Castle - but it's been an uphill struggle. Especially since I insist on getting them new in box. Skeleton Ship Attack and Shipwreck Island, you shall be mine some day!

Please help me decide between Fantasy Era of LOTR/Hobbit
Hive replied to Ritsz's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Use Fantasy Era as a base, but add some orcs and trolls and ringwraiths from LOTR/Hobbit to spice things up. And of course, use some bricks/structures from LOTR/Hobbit as they fit. Create your own world where you aren't limited to canon material. -
Since this thread has been bumped now anyway, I might as well add that I think this is a fantastic set and would love to see a modern version of it. This set shows that you don't necessarily need a huge set with tons of pieces to make something good, it's all about making the pieces count. Sure, the concept (defensive wall structure with attacking siege machine) has been copied almost to death (these days usually receiving a flick fire attack wagon), but they rarely manage to even approach this one in quality. And to think, 6 of those magnificent shields in one, small-ish sized set... wow!
-
Yeah, it's a weird fit - a sort of clash of styles. But still a cool set; a good-looking mech (that just needs a bit of customization with colours) and a couple of figures that one can only love. Oh, and I forgot to say it in my first post: great review! Thanks!
