Zero's workshop
Zerobricks replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here's the info on the competition: The location will be this, in the edge of Budapest: https://www.google.c...1!1m1!4e1?hl=en We plan to have a race on this hill: https://en.wikipedia...Harmashatarhegy It will be held on 7th May afternoon from about 15:30 to 19:00 Rules, important parts: yes, there are no limitations (on motors), but the truck has to be proportional to a real one, look like a real one, at least roughly. It has to have at least a cab in the front, so the body, which the original has. The width of the body should be nearly the same width as the wheels (most of the ral trucks are made this way). Be with attention to the approaching angles, 90 degrees aren't allowed, you have to be less (only this is definied) than that. Max width of the truck is around 29 studs. Allowed custom parts: sBrick, 108 mm 3rd party tyres, rubber bands, strings, rear covers (like paper). -

Woah, thats impressive! But even with costum tyres, they look a bit small at the scale you are building. You got any larger wheels to try out? How do the old, softer springs cope with the weight? I like the grill made out of small panels and the detailed, curved bodywork, you dont fail to impress, Effe -

Awesome suspension setup! One suggestion though. I belive you dont need such high gearing for the drive and you can easily repalce at least a pair of 12:20 gears with 16:16. I think you made one of the smallest drive axle, at least AFAIK. Oh one more suggestion, this part might be helpfull in the axles for future buids: -

This might be slightly offtopic, but I decided to join the Malug trial truck race which will be held in saturday, 8th of May in Budapest, Hungary. I will be bringing my Oshkosh 10x10 and a new trial truck built specifically for this race. -

Its a very nice set, but IMO far away from ultimate. For an ultimate set I'd imagine a model with - realistic suspension and steering geometry - if possible AWD, difflocks, or limited slip diffs (depending if its a racer of an SUV) - realisitic engine with bigger cylinders (these are the size of wheel nuts) - more exclusive parts/colors - smoother gearbox, I made a prototype paddle gearbox which works with 1/10 th of the required force and with 6 gears! EDIT: - Also the front looks way too close to the ground, how can suspension even work without bodywork touching the ground? But even with all the stuff written above I belive the car is a great base model for modifying into a real Ultimate. Not to mention a great source of functional and esthetical parts. And its ORANGE -

Amazing use of unusual pieces! I know the lamps are pumps from racers or something like that, but whats the body made out?

As others said, it looks very well put together. Awesome use of curved slopes to get that smooth rounded look. And lets not forget all the realistic mechanics underneath. I think this is the first model team car with technic supercar mechanics, at least for me.

IMO the point of the model is to provoke in a good way... Just imagine how many people are living in such inhumane conditions whil we the "privilged ones" play around with bricks and live our excessive lives. -
What an original idea! Amazing use of parts, especially the trapezoid fences in the engines.

In the last few years, I more or less always started with LDD version of my models first. Its much easier to see the parts and the techniques you will use, but it gets complicated when you get more into the dynamic stuff such as levers, gears, suspensions and so on. For those I can make the simple mock ups with real bricks and adjust the LDD model accordingly. After everything seems to be good digitally I rebuild the model in real bricks and usually also change the build on the go. Lastly I update the LDD file to match the real one and do some last chnages to the model.

Looks very close to the real thing. I see you made it with slightly spreaded wings, just like what these birds do when singing.

Its like a farm on the wings, very original and humoristic!

After a rather long pause on this build I decided to start agaon from scratch. There were problems with general lack of torque to LA's and unstable walking cycle. Now I decided to use more ball joints, 4 where LA's attach to the body and 2 more where legs are attached to the body. The walking cycle will be totally redone with whole assembly with motors and LA's swaying, moving the legs directly. The front and rear part will also pivot in axial manner in order to transfer weight from legs. This way I will reduce the number of joints in legs, increase stiffness and add more dynamic motion to the walking. Wish me luck :) -

As others said, this two are simply amazing and extremelly realistic looking. Nice use of studless and studded parts to get the shapes right. Any chance of motorizing them? -
