Zero's workshop
Zerobricks replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Here's what I already worked on a few months ago, but I think now its mature enough to showcase It may look simillar to Porsche's gearbox, but thats where resembelence ends. This flappy paddle gear selector uses pully wheels as its heart to switch and hold 6 gear positions. It uses a total of seven rubber bricks: - two to reset each paddle position (left + right = 4) - two to guide the switching arms into the switching gear - one to press down the technic beam with a flat panel onto the switching gear in order to hold position I also installed a gear display which can be seen through the steering wheel. in order for steering wheel to work, I used several bewel gears to transfer torque across the switching axle. The gearbox itself is not yet perfected, the gears are not yet in correct order, but you can see that it works very well here: Of course the gearbox is designed for supercars and not for high torque applications. -
What a smooth looking, realistic model! Well done, from distance you cannot even tell its Lego.

One of the best Lego bikes I ever had the pleasure to look at. As others said the tumbler wheel is PERFECT for such a model. The small details like wires, chains, netting and even the helmet used as the rear light cover really make this bike stand out. I can imagine this vehicle used in a future Mad Max movie since you caugh the dystopian spirit perfectly.

That is simply brilliant. A perfect blend of old style bicycles with the steampunk. Brilliant technique for the front wheel too, can you show internal details of that?

I am sorry for the late reply, but my life ATM is a bit hecktic and what not... Anyway I had an AWESOME time, a BIG thanks to Tamas for organising this great meeting. Also a BIG THANKS to Nandi for showing me around the Budapest and driving me around, you rock For the race, I see that uisng third party tyres is a way to go, so it seems I will have to give up on my purist ways. The trucks I used had some flaws, the Oshkosh was never designed as a trial truck and the 6L motors drained batteries too fast. The second truck powered by 4 RC motors was my first truck ever to use so much power in such compact model. Due o width limitations I was forced to use smaller 8448 wheels which lack the required grip. The problem was also in gearing, since the front and rear motors were not connected, the rear wheel drive tended to ran out of torque... Even after all these years and all those trucks I still have a lot of learn... And this is why I really like competitions such as these. They bring out the best out of people, and the worst out of trucks

Nice showcase of the inherent inefficiency of the worm gears. You loose some 50% of power right there.

42056 - Porsche Speculation
Zerobricks replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Simple answer.... Weight! 3000 parts is like 3 kilograms with more than half of them in the rear. -

Front suspension is identical to the one in 24 hr race car. -

Jim, thats rear suspension About the lack of wheels's axlehole... Personally I dont miss it, hardly anyone uses normal axles at such large scales due to the flex and weak attachment point. -

I belive the grain on the last photo is intentional, its too uniform....they are hiding stuff. -
Hi there How does the current steering setup work for you? IMO it should have enoigh torque to steer the wheels, BUT a lot depends on the way you made steering hubs. The closer you bring the wheel to the steering pint, the less power you will need to steer and in the end a servo might be enough. Can you show more detailed pictures of the hubs?
