I was sceptical that they could pull off a decent Slave I but they have done a really good job on this. The custom windscreen helps a lot but they have really done the overall shape very well, the red apron must be very difficult to get right. I'm looking forward to seeing the underside.

This is an interesting topic. The issue of scale is tricky. I have recently started a few buildings and used the size of the available door and window frames as a starting point for the size of the building. I also want the building to look roughly to scale with a minifigure but consider them to be slightly shorter than a human. I found that my buildings were coming out at a slightly bigger scale than the modulars. This is not surprising as the modulars have been scaled down to meet a certain budget. Although it is cool to build things that fit in with the official sets we don't need to be constrained by that, so I would rather scale my official sets up a bit rather than force all my MOCs to fit to that scale. I share your pain with the lack of available parts. I really wish there were a few more window and door frame options.

Very impressive cheese work. How do you stop them falling out when you put them vertically?

6th Anniversary REVIEW: 79012 Mirkwood Elf Army
TheBear replied to JimBee's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
If the elves had helmets and the orcs had hair then I would have given the minifigures 9/10- 11 replies

That staircase is just amazing, the whole thing is perfect. I'm looking forward to seeing the completed build.

It would be cool if you reversed the blue one so that the bay window is on the left hand side. This is more often how these buildings are done when there is more than one in a row on the same street.

You could take this further by adding another 2 sets, then you'd have the full cantina layout from the movie. They are already on Ebay in the UK for £29 without minifigures.

Good job, it's almost as if the set was designed with this in mind.

The front of the cockpit looks too big to me

Personally I think the first Lego X-Wing is the best. I'm talking of course about set 6824.
-
The first X-Wing has some charm and I can understand why some people might like it for nostalgic reasons even though I don't (since I'm too old to have had it as a child). But the same can't be said for the Y-Wing, it just looks awful. The struts that link the body to the engines should be straight, not slope upwards like the Starship Enterprise! And the blockiness at the front just looks horrific! How anyone could prefer the first Y-Wing is beyond me.

All your buildings are great and this one is no exception. I would love to visit this place for real with my son and buy him a Speedorz trike.

The grey is far too dark, but even if that were true as soon as you mention the shape then people who prefer 7140 would say accuracy isn't important.
-
A specialised part to me would be one that would be difficult to use elsewhere. There isn't a single part like that on the latest X-Wing. The Lego system has always been more than just basic bricks and the vast array of parts available is part of what makes it interesting.
-
Very light grey would definitely be better than either white or light grey for an X-Wing, but for whatever reason it is not a mainstream colour that they use very often and there are only a handful of parts available in this colour.
-
This comes up time and time again. X-Wings are white and dirty, which approximates to grey, but Lego's light bluish grey is too dark, so you either have to have something that is too dark or too clean looking. If you compare an X-Wing to something that is actually grey like the Millennium Falcon then you will see that they are significantly lighter.

Really great build, the shape and proportions couldn't be any better at this scale.

I personally get a much better "Lego feeling" from the newer sets and I think what they have been doing over the past few years looks way better than the past. I get my nostalgic feeling from the sets I had as a child; classic space, castle, town and pirates. The early Star Wars line didn't interest me at all. Like most children of my age I had a whole bunch of Kenner Star Wars sets and a lot of Lego, but the two together just somehow didn't seem as good. Looking at the early Star Wars sets today I still think they look bad, but a lot of the sets they have released over the past few years look absolutely superb.

LEGO 10227 - Longer "stick" to better secure rear cockpit?
TheBear replied to Haderach's topic in LEGO Star Wars
That windscreen is much better without a doubt. I am quite surprised that you can put a minifigure in there and it doesn't look ridiculously out of scale. -
Here is the parts list http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/chrispedersen22/Snowspeeder/partlist.txt

Nice build. It would be nice if you could bulk out the engines a bit as they are looking quite puny, but finding suitable parts at the right size is tricky. Your cockpit looks to have been inspired by Tylers. His use of stickers is what makes it work so well in my opinion and yours would look better if you could do something similar.

Finally! I've been waiting years for this!
