Anyone else a little disappointed with 75050?
TheBear replied to SWAT Strachan's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Nice attempt to improve the model. I think you have made the s-foils slightly too short now though. For reference the s-foils when closed should line up with the sensor intake on the main wing. The sensor intake on yours is now too low though, it should be closer to the middle of the wing. On the studio model the front edge of the main wing is not straight, the UCS only does this due to the way it is built. The way you have bulked out the main wing is good but if there was some way to keep the slope at the front it would be better. -
This is a great MOC, I love all of it but my favourite bit is the water. What did you put under those trans-blue tiles to achieve that depth effect?

Congratulations, this is unbelievable! A lot of people looking at it would probably not even realise it is built out of Lego.

Here's my version of Wuher: head 3626cpb0954 torso 973pb0471c01 It isn't perfect. The torso shouldn't have a brown undershirt and the hair should be darker, but there is no suitable head that I have found with darker sideburns.

[WIP] Movie accurate cantina at full minifigure scale
TheBear replied to TheBear's topic in LEGO Star Wars
It depends really on what arches you want to use. If you just stick with the 5x4 ones from the cantina sets then sourcing a few more is easy. If you want to make them bigger then things get harder. The 12x3 arches I am using are quite rare in tan and I am using 2 for each alcove and another 2 for the bar. The inverted slopes I am using are also rare in tan and there are 4 for each alcove. Either way Bricklink is the best way to get what you need. -
[WIP] Movie accurate cantina at full minifigure scale
TheBear replied to TheBear's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I've been very slowly working on this on and off. For a long time I was stuck with the sizing of the alcoves. I knew they should be a bit bigger, but I was pretty happy with the size of the tables so I couldn't figure out how to make the alcove bigger without making the tables too far away from the chairs. In the movie you never really see an alcove clearly in any kind of detail so it is actually pretty hard to figure out how they are laid out. After a lot of searching I finally found what I was looking for in a shot from the deleted scenes. It turns out that the tables and the windows aren't centred in the alcoves! This isn't at all obvious from the shots in the movie, so nearly all the models I have seen (both Lego and otherwise) put the tables in the centre and end up with the alcove being too small. With this piece of information I was finally able to move forward. I made the alcove two studs wider and made the curve more accurate using inverted slopes. With the alcoves wider I made the bar slightly wider and longer, which seems to work better when trying to fit everyone in. For a while now I have been working on the dispensers and piping at the bar which is by far the hardest part of this build. Getting accurate information on the layout of the bar was surprisingly hard. Using a combination of movie stills and production shots I have been able to figure out the position of all the dispensers and the major sections of piping but I still have some way to go to implementing it. Just to show how big this thing is, here it is next to the new cantina set. This is not intended as a criticism of the set, I think it is good for what it is, but it seems tiny next to something close to true minifigure scale. Now I am focused on finishing the bar and adding two more alcoves on the right hand side. I have found this build to be difficult since I am fairly new to MOCing, but I am pleased that I am slowly making progress and haven't given up! -
MOC: Modern-ish style British semi-detached house
TheBear replied to TheOneVeyronian's topic in LEGO Town
Nice build. I actually have gaps in my real roof similar to that which is annoying when it rains! I can see you have spent more time on the interior and there are a lot of great details. A couple of small things you could do to make the exterior better would be guttering and window sills. -
[MOC] Minifig-scale B-Wing (with instructions and LDD)
TheBear replied to krispy's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Yes, but they have recently started producing new parts in sand blue, so hopefully the ones needed for this set will become easier to obtain in the future. Those 2x4 tiles are brand new in sand blue, only released in the new Maersk Line Triple-E.- 125 replies

I'm not sure how much it cost me in total but it wasn't anywhere near that. It should be no more than about $150.- 125 replies

Hello & asking for set recommendations
TheBear replied to Davidbarrena's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
The current wave of Hobbit sets are being cleared at the moment and there are lots of good deals to be had if you keep an eye out for them. I picked up Dul Guldur battle for £25 (65% off). Also there are people selling brand new sets on Ebay with the minifigures taken out which can be a good way to get lots of bricks quite cheaply. -
Jawas don't wear capes, the old figure just looked wrong.

Very good as a playset in the style of an official set. I seriously doubt a new official set will be better than this.

You can see her briefly in the film amongst the X-wing pilots at the Home One briefing. She is behind Lando when he is talking to Han just before the briefing starts. Her helmet is actually reused from the "blast shield" that Luke uses in the first film on the Millennium Falcon. Unfortunately Lego have never done a version of that with printing so there is no way yet to recreate her using official parts.

Show Your Army, Navy, and Collection Display

Looking great, you need more officers though! -
Displaying Lego is a good use for cheap furniture even for doctors who can afford to be snobby about it.

[MOC] Minifig-scale B-Wing (with instructions and LDD)
TheBear replied to krispy's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Nice build, the stand is awesome. Check out ScottishDave's 1.2 version for improved sturdiness and the opening cockpit which I'm sure your 4 year old will appreciate. Interestingly Lego have started producing new parts in sand blue again. For example the 2x4 Tile and cheese slope. Hopefully this will soon make the sand blue version easier to source or give us some new options for improving the design.- 125 replies

I agree with you that this set seems too expensive for what it is. I would really like it but I am not sure it is worth £250 to me. People get annoyed when they see how cheap the US price is, but this excludes sales tax which is charged locally. If you take the VAT off the UK price the difference is only £26 which can easily be accounted for by the increased cost of doing business in a smaller market. The same goes for all the EU prices which have similar VAT rates to the UK.

Very cool, I bet it looks amazing on the shelf.

Lego base their decisions on what they think will sell rather than the opinions of some hardcore fans, otherwise we would have got Marshal Banana's sandcrawler for £1000 instead of the one we are getting. A swooshable Falcon with a decent interior that is smaller than the UCS but bigger than 7965 would probably sell a lot better than a rehashing of the old UCS at £700.

How to piece together sets through Bricklink?

How to piece together sets through Bricklink?
TheBear replied to icarusbird's topic in LEGO Star Wars
I've built the Larry Lars snowspeeder from the photos and it is honestly not that difficult to figure out the parts and create a wanted list as there aren't many parts to it. What I did was to build it using any colours with the parts I had available and use that to figure out what parts I needed to order. When it comes to ordering from Bricklink, the Wanted > By Shop tab is very helpful to figure out who has the most of what you need. The only problem is that the people with the highest quantities are often more expensive, but it has to be balanced against packing and delivery costs. I usually end up ordering based on the rarest parts first and then pick up a lot of other parts from the same vendors. -
Great build, the open back style works really well and the restaurant looks superb.

That's strange, I paid £2.49 for mine in Toys R Us. They must have doubled the prices when they realised how fast they were selling
