[WIP] Buggy
Boxerlego replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well it looks like I cant put the two XL motors in this buggy like how the L motors are in it because the gear pairs for the 4x3 gear mesh is horrible. Here is some pictures of what I'm talking about.- 13 replies

[WIP] Buggy
Boxerlego replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Couple of days ago I connected the 8 cell AA 12v battery box which the voltage was actually at 10.4v. There was a without a doubt a noticeable speed difference with the 2 L motors. Sure it wasn't fast as if was the buggy motors powering it with the extra voltage but the L motors certainly was showing some speed that wasn't there with the Lego 9v AA battery box connected up.- 13 replies

Hi, Your a building machine. It looks good you have the chassis mostly done. I look forward to this being completed. -
[WIP] Buggy
Boxerlego replied to Boxerlego's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I'm sticking with the AA batteries. Sure It can appear to be heavy option and eat in to the speed but the way I look at it, is that 1 battery can be as good as 6 it all depends how there connected together.- 13 replies

[WIP] Buggy

I wondering too but I will certainly give it a go. Thanks! It has decent speed with the two L motors and heavy battery box. Nice buggy! The direct motor drive setup along with Lipo battery sure would be faster then this one here in its currents condition.- 13 replies

Here is my most recent project I'm building. I've built the chassis of this Buggy from instructions made by Madoca 1977. The difference here is that I built this to use the AA battery box instead of the Lipo battery. In the future I plan to add one or two of my upgraded XL motor in here but right now the L motors are looking and handling great. More is to come feel free to comment...

[MOC] Off Road Pickup
Boxerlego replied to Madoca 1977's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It looks and functions nicely for a large size model. Its awesome that it can incorporate both batteries boxes and has V8 engine along with torque vectoring differentials. Great work on making the Front page and the Pro tag! Looking forward for it to be apart of the Hall of Fame! -
Steering motor looks good. Your picture certainly shows what a servo driver could be like if one existed where any motor can be a steering motor. The disadvantage behind the return to center spring is that it forces the steering motor to work harder and that could wind up effecting the RPM/speed duration on drive motors especially if your planing on using the V2 receiver...

Wow that is a bunch of separators. I don't have any orange colored ones but I do have a bunch of these grey ones. I think the older versions are better then the new ones.

Tow Truck XL
Boxerlego replied to dikkie klijn's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Congratulations on the Hall of Fame! This tow truck is certainly amazing! -
Rough guess I would say the idealistic RPM is somewhere between 1300-1600 but once on the ground the rpm will drop. Hard to say where that would end up be but It sure does look light so It might no be that much of a drop.

I understand this. But at least with the XL motor there in good supply. Its a very tough and challenging mod to do perfectly. I've been redoing one of XL motors mods because the motor alignment wasn't solid and there was some loose movement with the motor that would cause the motor to go out of alignment making a horrible gear noise. Especially when one has been used well out in the elements and could possibly be on the verge of breaking as well. 20$ is the max I'm willing to spend for a used buggy motor. To keep the discussion on topic, I have a question maybe you can answer it. What is the fastest RPM on the buggy motor with the lithium batteries powering it through the RC unit?

But that is still a misuse of Watts when describing about the battery discharge curves and characteristics. In a ideal situation where the battery is expected to deliver 70Watts of power in one hour then sure that is what you would go by but if your consuming 10 Watts per hour out of the 70Wh battery then you will have a maximum run time of 7 hours before the battery discharge curve hits its knee (or the choke point in power) and then you enter that region of sharp discharge where your degrading the performance/life of the battery. Simply saying that your new creation has over 70 watts of power doesn't really show how powerful it is or how the power is distributed over time. ------ My thoughts is that performance and functionality are intertwine. Functionality certainly is key when it comes to certain things like gears, suspension, and steering. Differentials are certainly worth having if you want good performance in turning and weaving. To get the best results from the differential you'll need to shim it to avoid it from grinding the gears together from sudden shock loads. Listen to AndyCW above, he is spot on when it comes to this. To quote from him "Its not how much power goes through the drivetrain but how abruptly that power is applied." Doing small stuff like this will improve both functionality and performance. Servo for steering is much worth it even tho there are some miner technical problems, it still beats the M motor steering setup in a heartbeat. Suspension is very important and necessary towards performance and distributing weight forces. Functionality wise suspension always has the notion that it is there to give the driver a comfortable ride experience. Now gearbox are interesting and can certainly add a lot more function in the model. However gearboxes are just to intricate and bulky to get real good performance with it in a model like you would with the standard gearing of buggy motors.

A LEGO reality show... a good idea or a bad one?
Boxerlego replied to XAxles's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Why doesn't this tread have a poll, sure does seem like it should. A Lego reality TV shows sounds good but if just going to be another popularity contest then I have no plans in watching it. -
Now this was said to me so now I'm telling it to you... First off batteries are not measured simply in terms of watts. Batteries are also measured in hours so in order to measure the expected power you got rate it in terms of Watts Hours. See now your seeing it, Building at these power levels changes the whole paradigm, especially when you working with POWER puller tires and 18V motors. But just ignore this, that is way beyond the level of building your at...

Jeep Crawler
Boxerlego replied to Technic156's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Excellent work! Those 3rd party tires make the LEGO Jeep look realistic. -
Buggy motors are fast but their not as fast nor have the output as the XL motor's that I upgraded. However, buggy motors certainly have the design advantage over the XL motor for being able to be connected to the drive axle.
