Many thanks for the pic. Looks indeed better than I would have thought. If you had more space you could just combine two of them to get an even more realistic look.

Modular buildings seem to be expensive. In fact, they aren't. The price per piece ratio of the modular sets is among the best you can get, even at a regular price. And you get lots of great parts to build smaller buildings if that's what you're aiming at. As Zanki said, the regular City sets are made for children, the modulars are rather made for AFOLs. That's why they are discussed extensively here. Regarding the scale there is no "right" or "wrong" - we may choose the scale that fits our needs. I agree with everything, but regarding the cars I have the impression it's rather the opposite: The kids have vehicles that go well with their Town stuff - but we as AFOLs don't get cars that go well with the modulars - which is not only a question of scale but of style, of complexity and last not least of "building experience". Being a car builder myself I have no problem with that but I'm often struck when I see the finest self-designed modular buildings combined with regular Town vehicles.

Very nice. I'd love to see more of those modern style buildings. The color combination is very nice, as is the SNOT work on the windows. My only concern would be the size - doesn't it look a bit small when combined with the modulars? Anyhow an inspiring building!
-
Really? Maybe you don't refer to modular or CC buildings? When I look at those nice town layouts on a convention or the EB Town Layout Index I don't have the impression that there's a lack of buildings. Not at all. Even when only using the CC or modular buildings and some road plates you may build a small but good-looking town layout. Add some (maybe slightly modded and enlarged) Creator buildings, and everything's fine. My impression is that there isn't a lack of buildings but a lack of vehicles that go well with the buildings. When you take a closer look to some of those cities you'll see lots of trucks (which look okay in city scale) but only a few passenger cars (which often don't look very realistic).

Looks great LT, the profiled front is nice. Plus I love large windows to see what's going on in a building. And I love unusual widths even more. Looking forward to more of this.

I really like this. Looks already like a small layout. Plus the houses are quite different in height, style and colour design which makes a town lively in my opinion. Looking forward to more of this! The good news: Parts aren't limited at all when using BrickLink. Au contraire you'll feel like being in a LEGO paradise. Sometimes you'll find yourself just scrolling up and down the parts catalogue to discover old parts you've never seen before - and they are (mostly) available which is the most fantastic thing.
-
Pics are working. Just do what LT told you, choose the icon "Share this photo", copy the BBCode (not HTML!) and you'll get this: Squad 1 drivers side by benjamin2051, on Flickr Nice rig btw. Although I'm not too fond of custom stickers, the shaping is done very well.

I have been thinking about that - would be no problem since the house I'm living in (not my own, alas) already looks like a modular building. I guess this is the right point. You may build any building in any scale, but of course there's a loss of realism when shrinking the building since the usable parts stay the same - probably the main difference between building with Lego and the usual model building. . Thus my advice would be not to think about the details in the first place but of the measurements and proportions of the whole thing. A detail you don't manage to reproduce (which is not only a question of available parts but also of building experience) may be just omitted - and probably nobody cares about it. Lego building always means stylizing things, not to reproduce them as completely realistic models.
-
Very well done, I love the overall shape and all the fine details, especially the upside-down stuff. Those outriggers are great, too. I'm not sold on that wheels/mudguards combination, I must say (too close to the usual town look), but that's just me. Anyhow a very good-looking fire truck.

Very creative, very stylish, very inspiring. Now that's NPU on a modular building. Great job!

Thank you, glad you like them all! But since you are saying "not Lego city style" some words on that subject. I have the impression that there is no real "Lego city style", at least not when talking about vehicles. Whereas there are those nice CC buildings which are clearly AFOL related, there are no vehicles which meet that style, neither in terms of design nor complexity. Most of the Town vehicles are clearly meant as toys for children - if not (e.g. the vehicles from licensed sets or Ideas sets), they don't fit in. You can't combine an Ecto-1 (8.8w) or DeLorean (10w) coming from the Ideas sets with the usual 6w+ (6 plus mudguards) trucks in a town surrounding. My idea is that there must be something between the usual town vehicles and those nice car models from skillful builders like Misterzumbi, derjoe, Karwik, lichtblau, just to name a few. That means vehicles that are complex enough go well with the buildings, that are relatively small AND that are able to fit some minifigs, which is important when you have roads and want to evoke the impression of moving cars on them - they shouldn't be empty then. And that's what I'm trying to achieve - not just building some more or less nice cars but vehicles that fit into an urban surrounding, according to a scheme of widths that allows a graduation between different types of vehicles - where a sports car like a DeLorean can't be larger than a truck. An 8w truck is nice since you can add lots of details. Try to put it on a road plate, combine it with a CC building - doesn't work. 5w+ passenger cars are cute, they look good on a road plate with those rather narrow lanes. Try to fit a fig in - doesn't work. Once again the solution lies in between. Of course, there may be other schemes which might work well - but as a Town car builder you'll come to the point where you want to know if your next car must be built as a 5w, 6w or 7w. Thank you! Roadrunner and Cuda are fantastic rides, too - there should be more of them in minifig scale ... Thanks LT, glad you like them! It's much more trial and error than genius, though ... Thanks, well, the first Mustangs did have a rather sober design compared to later versions. Thank you! Many thanks! Thanks a lot, looking forward to your next bunch! Thank you, did you watch the trailer of the new movie? The interceptor is still alive, it seems ... Paint job: You can't be more right! Many thanks all for watching and commenting!

[Edit, 12 October 2015] Note: This thread is discontinued. If you're interested in more cars of this sort please join me on Flickr. [/Edit] Hi all, after all the LCS and airport stuff it was time to build some new cars - or rebuild some older cars according to the actual scheme of widths. In this thread you'll find some actual sports cars (to be continued). List of cars in this thread #1 Ford Falcon (Mad Max Interceptor) #2 Ford Mustang Convertible #3 Ford Mustang Fastback #4 Dodge Charger #5 Aston Martin DB5 #6 Ferrari Daytona Spider "Miami Vice" #7 Ferrari 308 GTS (Magnum, P.I. edition) #8 Mustang Shelby GT 500 "Eleanor" #9 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda #1 Ford Falcon (Mad Max Interceptor) The old Mad Max Interceptor (which might be known to some people) didn't fit any more into the actual range of widths used in the town project. Thus the following aspects were changed: width reduced from 7w+ to 6w+ lower roof line (back of the fig must be slanted, but it works) exhausts are situated more under the body than before tanks dark grey instead of red some minor changes #2 Ford Mustang (classic version) 6w+. Fits one whole minifig (two are quite difficult with this setup). #3 Ford Mustang Fastback A sportier version. #4 Dodge Charger The Charger is based on derjoe's amazing design which is very well known (see www.flickr.com/photos/53163759@N04/8554110987), but with quite a few modifications. The main point here is that "behind-the-tile design" which allows some unusual slopes - a concept to be further developed, I guess. 6.8w (6w plus two tiles), fits one fig (two are quite difficult with this setting, something to improve). Some more pics on Flickr. Thanks for looking, c&c welcome as usual. To be continued.

Being some kind of purist I'd buy none of such things. I often wonder why the existing lighting stuff is so rarely used in buildings and vehicles (I'm trying to do so from time to time, as you can see here). Even if the good old Light & Sound gear isn't as sophisticated as the example shown - it works quite well, it can easily be included, and the best of it all: it's Lego. Combined with PF LEDs there are lots of possibilities to enlighten a whole city without any non-Lego stuff.
-
That's what I think, too. I really love this, the functions are great, I especially love the two-section gate and how slowly it opens. But the whole MOC is done very well. Something like this could probably be combined with an LCS so that a car may leave its garage and merge into the traffic. But that's quite a large project ...

Another great car, the scissor doors are a nice feature, you don't see something like this very often at this scale. I even like the tire/rim combination here - both in black look quite nice for a Lambo. The rear end is very well done, concerning the front I'd like to draw you attention to the great 6w+ Lamborghini Reventon from Dohoon Kim, built as early as 2009: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/126123 Maybe tilting the whole frontend section would be an option here, too. Looking forward to the next batch!

Another very stylish car from you, packed with great ideas. That door design is especially nice, like this you can open and close the doors without problems. But it's all very well done. Wheels: You definitely need some whitewall tires here ...
-
Ah well, that's clearly a Ferrari. Lots of nice solutions. Love especially the rear, but the front section is done very well, too (rather yellow 1x1 round plate instead of black?). I'm not too fond of the new tire/rim combination, but here they work quite well. Looking forward to more! One hint: If you use the "Share this photo" function on Flickr (BBCode), clicking on the pic leads to the photo page on Flickr, not just to the pic.

Thank you. I guess within this range 5w is a suitable measure, if you have rather 6w passenger cars (or even smaller) 4w might indeed work better. Many thanks LT, I'd rather build some more cars than wracking my brain over that scale stuff ... Thanks a lot. Yeah, I didn't think of that, makes sense to me.

Amazing display with lots of stunning details, my favourites being the wrecked building (that wallpaper ...) and the remnant of the Brooklyn Bridge which is done exceptionally well. But there is a lot more to discover. Of course I'd love to see a larger picture of that nice Yellow Interceptor ... Congrats on your great collaborative work!

Hi all, this is a suggestion of a range of widths of vehicles suitable to be used within a town in "larger city scale", as I call it, meant to go well with the larger CC buildings like PC, GE or FB. In fact it's no exact scale (which would be very difficult) but a possibility to get a graduation between different types of vehicles supposed to go well with each other. From right to left: Roadster (6w), fits 2 figs side by side. Oldtimer car (6w+ = 6w plus mudguards), fits 2 figs side by side, usual measure of vintage cars. There are vintage cars fitting 3 figs, too. Offroader (modded 4437 SUV, probably my favourite City car, 6w+), fits 1 fig, just to show that this kind of TLG car goes well with the MOCs. Sports car (6w+), due to the special design this car (Mad Max Interceptor, recently shrinked from 7w+ to 6w+) only fits one driver and one dog which is sufficient here, this type of car is also possible with 2 figs side by side. Full-size car (7w), fits 3 or even 4 figs, as an LCS slot car the Checker Cab is equipped with steering and rear suspension. Full-size car, long vehicle (7w), the Ecto-1 fits 4 ghostbusters. Bus (7w+), the usual size of trucks and buses, the School Bus fits a whole bunch of figs, Monorail trains have the same width. Oversize truck (8w+), fits 2 figs, not to be used within the city where plain 8w vehicles don't seem to work, but as an ARFF the Faun will rarely be seen there. 8w will probably be the width of trains, too. Will be continued. Some types of vehicles are still missing, small cars like a Mini or 2 CV would probably have a width of 5w+, and there will be some trucks, too. Thanks for looking, c&c welcome as usual.

Another great rendition of a famous car! Love the shaping and colour scheme, nice parts usage, especially at the lower part of the frontend. Two suggestions: Have you tried a 1x2 curved slope instead of the 1x2 slope with grille? Looks nice anyway but I'd be curious how that would look like. Behind the door I rather see a cheese slope at the top than a 1x1 tile but maybe that would cause some other problems ... Anyhow great work, looking forward to the next one!

MOC - modular, modular, MODULAR my first complete one
ER0L replied to lightningtiger's topic in LEGO Town
Wow, what an exceptional design - a very original building, I especially love the contrast between plain white elements and the dark bluish grey profile bricks. The interior is great as always, too. Looking forward to more of those Googie style buildings from you! -
Very nice 7w Friends car, glad you added it to both the 7-wide Cars Group and the Friends Cars & Vehicles Group. The 7w+ measure is very suitable for the Friends dolls, and I like the shaping and the colour design of your car very much, especially the front really screams Mustang. The interior is done very well, too. Looking forward to more MOCs from you, and welcome to both Eurobricks and Flickr!
