I like the statue and light post. Although when I picture park, I do think of more grass. But I think this is a great addition to any city. It might work better if you tile all of the other sidewalks too.

Review Review: 21103 Back To The Future Time Machine
TheLegoDr replied to Rufus's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Thanks for this great review. Very informative. Great use of quotes too. Seeing them side by side, the final release blows the original out of the water. Very small and sporty and add you mentioned more durable. The hood isn't great, but I'm also not that bothered by it. I will definitely pick up one for sure. I think it was stated as an August 1st release for the states, so I'll get it with some star wars stuff. But I can't believe they misspelled shield....it'd be nice if they send out a replacement brick.- 207 replies

That water is beautiful. I need to find a large amount of trans blue tiles now. Keep up the great work.

It's a neat idea, but I've never played minecraft before. I never even heard of it before that CUUSOO model. I did buy that one though and I may pick these up as parts packs. But $35 each might shy me away from it. Although for the actual minecraft fan, probably a good buy.

The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I like having evil robots. I don't care if they are the police or imitating police. Those tactical vests are sweet. As far as the whites in the eyes, I like how they look, but hate the incompatibility. Some aren't as noticeable though thankfully.- 2,626 replies

Great build. I really like it. That roof is really neat. I've seen cheese slopes used before, but I like the addition of the 1x1 tile also. It definitely adds in some texture. The wall coloring works well and I like the wooden accents. The ground floor built with tiles is interesting and I think you gave it enough variation to be effective, but normally I don't like plate built walls. But overall I like your build. Keep up the great work! I hope to see more from you.

I think I was slowly getting back into the idea of LEGO after a really long dark ages, so I was looking at flickr groups and someone that I liked on there had a link to a eurobricks post. Then I started checking out the site more and more and eventually joined after lurking for about a year. It definitely helps eat away the day when I have nothing else going on.

I think you need a lot more than $100 to build anything. Especially with the multiple exclusive and new pieces coming out all of the time. And if you have $100 worth of castle pieces, you won't be able to build anything Star Wars related, that goes without saying. However, you can probably mod a lot of sets to make something better for you. But with my 6 figure piece count won't allow me to just up and build most sets.

Hey there! Live from Hogwarts
TheLegoDr replied to gryffindorcommonroom's topic in Hello! My name is...
Welcome to the site. There are loads of great builders here to learn from and usually the latest news leaks on upcoming sets. Harry Potter LEGO is what got me out of my dark ages. The 2010 line was brilliant. If you can find any (if you don't have them already) at a reasonable price (might be hard since they are discontinued) you should snag them up. Some of the best sets I own. Also, a few years ago we had a Hogwarts community build. You can still see some of the builds in the Licensed theme. Check them out sometime. -
Tariq j - I think the other question is what sets do you currently own. I don't need a laundry list, but everyone may end up suggesting sets you already have and then still wouldn't be of any help to you. As for me, I love most Licensed sets and the exclusives, so I agree about getting something that you can only get at the LEGO store. With that said, I bought the Lone Ranger line in April when it became available near me, but only the LEGO store had the sets until very recently (3 months later!) and even then I haven't seen the majority of them around here. So even some "widely" available sets don't become so widely available, if you understand me. I don't know how it works in England though. And since I'm in US, I don't know all of the prices of the sets in your currency, so again, I don't know how much help I could be. However, I would suggest Arkham if you can afford it, only because of the large variety of figures and a neat build. Granted I don't own that one either. It will be towards the top of the list for Christmas though. Otherwise, I would try to get as many smaller sets as you could for that same money to expand your super hero or lotr collection as much as you can. The large sets are great, but sometimes you get some great cheaper sets too.

I do believe September or October is when they are usually released. I believe earlier this year they stated they would have Friends, City, and Star Wars. The latter two being pretty consistent the last few years. Friends being popular is a nice addition too. That one sold out quickly last year, the other two were plentiful from what I saw. Now next year, they may have some more variety depending on how some of the other themes are doing.

Next CUUSOO set: 21103 Back to the Futureâ„¢ Time Machine
TheLegoDr replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Licensed
So I now need to come up with my August shopping list with Star Wars and BTTF set... And as far as I know about LEGO employees, they don't say anything until there is an official announcement, even if they do in fact know. -
Can someone point out these dogs you speak of? I don't see it at all.

I've seen micro building before, but the detail crammed into this is amazing. I love building smaller scale buildings, but I hadn't considered doing something on this small of a scale. Although I can see the appeal. You could build a large city at this scale. Keep up the great work. I may have to try my hand at this in the future.

I use them as their intended purpose. I have 100s of figures sitting on them. But for other ideas, it seems a lot were mentioned already. I've seen them used as sidewalks, streets, rooftops, etc. I've seen one or a couple used as a top for a 18th century carriage. It seemed to work really well there.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
As some professional advice, if you are having problems with your eyes seeing things, always remember the more light the better. And be sure to take a break if you've been working for too long. I recommend for every 20 minutes of near work to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Really easy to remember, 20/20/20. Now back to the topic, I don't own the Town Hall yet, but isn't it true that the brick built doors hit the pillars and can't open all of the way? Edit: Some further professional advice, always see your optometrist for regularly scheduled visits . -
As more and more people come to know that I am an AFOL, the more I've heard of females that state they always wanted LEGO as kids, but their parents wouldn't buy them any. It seems like a lot of children have this regret of not getting into it, even though it was essentially out of their control. Sure, some kids can acquire money and then they can spend it wherever. So far the Friends line is great. I only buy Licensed sets and Exclusives for myself and then a mixture for my daughter, but she loves the mini-dolls. She has an assortment of my castle princesses and her Friends dolls hanging out all of the time. I think more girls being exposed to it and seeing the dolls doing more activities than just dress up or make up, will help keep the idea afloat in their head that they can also do anything they want. Friends is definitely opening that path for people. Many Barbies will essentially be in a bikini or a super short skirt and then labeled as a doctor. I'd say LEGO is a much better role model than a lot of other traditional girl toys.

The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm definitely torn since there are only so many LEGO sets I could afford anyway... I like the idea of collectible figures, depending on who we get. The sets will be neat since they can vary in theme under one collective "movie" theme. I think that will help give us a lot of throwback stuff that wouldn't have been made otherwise. Now since they retired a lot of the older colors, they will all be updated with the new color scheme, which will be fine but it will be different than the earlier Wild West theme and whatnot. As far as that set picture, it looks great. I don't care so much for the vehicles, but the robotic police with the new tactical vests and guns will definitely get added to my collection. I wouldn't mind army building them, that's for sure. I can't wait to see more set releases/images/details...- 2,626 replies

The set itself is so-so. I think the downside is TLG thinking everything needs to be swooshable. Yes, it adds in instant play value, but buildings with play features (similar to the Funhouse) sounds like a much better way to handle the license. Yes, vehicles are needed, but it seems silly to keep putting out the same vehicles over and over again with a different design. With that said, I don't hate the vehicles in this set. I don't see the purpose of a dragster either, but the Batmobile is decent. I prefer the 2012 version, so I doubt I will build this one. But it helps that the figures sell the set. A new Riddler with a green bowler, great idea. A new suited Batman is welcomed. And the Flash, of course, is welcomed. I would prefer printed boots, especially since they seem to do that with multiple Comic Con figures, so why not official set figures too. The helmet looks good and I'm sure it will blend well with the red-head and printed face. I just hope the face isn't a weird color because of it (like Captain America's skin tone and the Stormtroopers darker complexion). I don't mind multiple skin colors since they exist in the real world, but when the underlying color causes it, it can be more of an issue. I just hope it isn't like the red-white-pink issues with Kingdoms or the Imperial Pirate torsos.. But count me in for a set. Granted I would think the price should be closer to the 20 marker instead of 30.

I am extremely new to trains. The only trains I own are the 2010 Hogwarts Express and the most recent Lone Ranger Constitution. With that said, my wife wants me to build her a Christmas train with power functions to go around the tree. I've done some research on where to place the power functions, but since I've never worked with them before, I don't really know where to begin. My questions: How should a Christmas train look compared to the two trains I listed above? As in, what elements can I take from them and create an awesome looking train? Where exactly should I put the PF motor? Should it be in the tender or somewhere else? Is the new track in the Lone Ranger set the same as the boxed track I saw at the LEGO store? I will have to measure exactly to see how big of a circle/oval she wants, so I will figure out how much track is needed, but otherwise I don't really know where to begin. Any help will be most appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Avalonia Guild: Homepage, Sign-up and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Derfel Cadarn's topic in Guilds of Historica
Well, my old pappy used to say, "He who fights and runs away can run away another day." In reality, I just started building stuff for Avalonia. If someone is to leave and help defend Nocturnus, what happens to their lands? I do recall it saying you should knock before coming back because this won't be their home anymore. And will they have to build in the Nocturnus style in the future? I definitely like the Avalonian style and that's why I chose this guild. I can understand both sides of the coin. I will have to ponder a bit. -
[MOC] Rohirrim palace with eagle's nest
TheLegoDr replied to kreimkoek's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I don't picture that as an actual place for the Rohirrim, since I picture more wood-built structures. However, with that aside, I think this is a great looking fortress on its own. And the large number of Rohan soldiers is impressive. -
I guess that is possible. The Rancor Pit was definitely only there to sell a Rancor because the build took less than 10 minutes I bet. It had 360 pieces for $60...definitely only made for the Rancor mold. Now to put 3 cave trolls in that same set plus 4 figures, I don't know if that is the same "balance." The cave troll isn't huge and the Rancor is, but still that's a lot of extra in the Hobbit set that I wouldn't see happening. Granted they gave a very Treebeard-like Ent in the Orthanc set, so I hope they don't assume we will be happy with that Ent when we want the actual Treebeard. It'd be the same with the die hards that want 3 trolls in that set. It is possible they release one and call it good. But in the end, I don't see that set happening since that movie is over and done with. They will probably continue to look ahead. I know very little about Middle Earth even though I love it, so I won't make any guesses to what we would expect for sets or figures. All I care about is more Elves.

Neat idea. The false wall is brilliant and very fitting. Although I'd assume Robin would have a room at the Batcave also (similar to Batman Forever), just so he could leave with Batman as soon as possible. Either way, it's nice to see him being such a gentleman. Keep up the great work! There are a lot of nice houses on that street!
-
Brilliant. I know nothing of this building, but to the source material it seems very fitting. The lighting is neat, but the rounded dome on the top tower is brilliant. Well done there. I can't even wrap my head around that. And I never saw that Sydney Opera House before either. Great job on that too!
